Question 7 Evaluation

Question 7- Evaluation. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? For a start I have become a lot more aware about film genres as a whole, for our preliminary we focused on a horror genre but didn’t do any back up research, where as in our final production, I looked a lot more into the genres which helped me out a lot by knowing what I need to include in my film such as Character types and what people actually look for in an independent opening sequence such as music to help understand the emotion and a story line based on a characters day to day life. From this I have learnt that research is important when planning and producing a clip as it helps you understand and plan what is needed in your sequence. 180 degree rule- In our preliminary task we broke the 180 degree rule without being aware as of it until it came to the editing, this may be because it was our first ever time filing and using camera equipment so down to lack of experience. This made us focus more when doing the full product as we played a lot more attention to where we were filming and placing the camera. As you can see in our preliminary about when doing shot reverse shot we broke the 180 degree rule, this rule can’t be broken as it may confuse the audience member what character is who as they have switched sides on the screen, this was a big problem for us in our preliminary. But as it was a mistake we didn’t want to make again so in our main task we kept a constant eye on where we were putting the camera to ensure we didn’t make this error again. Mise-en-scene- Looking back at our preliminary we tried our best with the mise- en- scene trying to make it scary by getting in a makeup artist to do cuts on our psychopaths face, dressing our actors in appropriate clothing eg a white gown for the psychopath and normal clothes for the visitors and also by filming in an old attic to help make our scene scarier. Here you can see the cuts on her face, the scary door in the background and the costumes of both of our actors.

  • Question 7- Evaluation.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression

from it to the full product?

For a start I have become a lot more aware about film genres as a whole, for our preliminary we

focused on a horror genre but didnt do any back up research, where as in our final production, I

looked a lot more into the genres which helped me out a lot by knowing what I need to include in

my film such as Character types and what people actually look for in an independent opening

sequence such as music to help understand the emotion and a story line based on a characters day

to day life. From this I have learnt that research is important when planning and producing a clip as it

helps you understand and plan what is needed in your sequence.

180 degree rule- In our preliminary task we broke the 180 degree rule without being aware as of it

until it came to the editing, this may be because it was our first ever time filing and using camera

equipment so down to lack of experience. This made us focus more when doing the full product as

we played a lot more attention to where we were filming and placing the camera.

As you can see in our preliminary about when doing shot reverse shot we broke the 180 degree

rule, this rule cant be broken as it may confuse the audience member what character is who as they

have switched sides on the screen, this was a big problem for us in our preliminary. But as it was a

mistake we didnt want to make again so in our main task we kept a constant eye on where we were

putting the camera to ensure we didnt make this error again.

    Mise-en-scene- Looking back at our

preliminary we tried our best with the mise-

en- scene trying to make it scary by getting in a

makeup artist to do cuts on our psychopaths

face, dressing our actors in appropriate

clothing eg a white gown for the psychopath

and normal clothes for the visitors and also by

filming in an old attic to help make our scene

scarier. Here you can see the cuts on her face, the

scary door in the background and the costumes of

    both of our actors.

  • However there are other elements to the preliminary that effected the overall look of the task and

didnt fit with the story line or horror at all, such as things in the background that we didnt think to

move when filming the preliminary, such as an iron, a Christmas bag and the pink flowery wall paper

that doesnt fit the theme of horror.

Main task- As there were a few problems in our preliminary with mise-en-scene, this made us think

a lot more about where we should film our main tasks and props and costumes.

We choose a grave yard to fit with our story line and independent genre, with choosing this we

found that its a big open space so the scenery for the Mise-en-scene will be consistent throughout.

We thought that there may be problems such as people in the grave yard with may have affected

the filming but we went in an afternoon so nobody was around. As you can see the church yard is

consistent throughout so our audience wont get confused, also it fits well with our genre and

doesnt look silly and unrealistic. It helps to create the mood and shows the audience the sadness

that she has lost a loved one and the church yard helps to give our audience a sense of what is going

to happen in the rest of our film. We also got our actor to wear normal clothes in our filming which

we planned as we didnt want her to stand out too much, the props we use (the flowers and the

letter) we also appropriate for our filming and didnt look out of place.

  • Lighting- in the preliminary task there is uneven lighting through the whole sequence

making it look uneven and un realistic.

As you can see the light varies throughout our preliminary, we tried to use a mixture of

natural light and artificial lighting but it didnt work well as it looks uneven.

After realising this we decided that for our official product we would go outside there for

the lighting can be consistent throughout and look more of a realistic product, as you can

see here it worked out a lot better for us by using natural lighting.

A few other things we had to consider were actors, for example in our preliminary we all

had to switch roles from acting, filming and recording sound, where as in our main task we

  • hired an actor so it looked more professional, plus the actor took the role seriously making

our film look a lot better than the preliminary.
