HOW DOES OUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL

GROUPS?

Page 2: Question 2

IS GENDER REPRESENTED IN A STEREOTYPICAL WAY?

Page 3: Question 2

• In our media sequence gender is shown to be quite stereotypical, it is stereotypical for film noir (our chosen genre) because the male characters in our sequence act dominant and are always in control, for example the male killer was dominant when he was chasing Ellie (femme fatal), however the women in our sequence are passive and they appear to be the subordinate to the dominant male characters in the sequence, an example of the women being subordinate would be Ellie being followed and eventually chased down and killed by the killer.

WHAT ARE THE SOCIAL GROUPS IN TERMS OF AGE, RACE, CLASS, GENDER ETC.?

Page 5: Question 2

AGE

• The age that the characters would represent would be adults (30+), this is shown in the sequence that they are professional in what they do and they are mature and calm in most situations , for example during the detective and informer scene the detective is very serious and straight to the point when he hands over the money for the information , Also the hand over of money is discrete and professional showing that the characters know what they are doing , and they have had previous experience of thing kind of thing before suggesting that they are experienced adults.

GENDER

• The characters in our sequence represent gender in the stereotypical fashion of film noir (men dominant and women subordinates), an example of the subordination of women and the dominance of the men in the sequence would be the scene between the killer and Ellie , dominance is shown when the killer in chasing Ellie along the sea front , Ellie is also shown to be the subordinate because she is the defenceless person being chased.

CLASS

• The characters in our sequence seem to represent the middle class social group, this is shown through the tone in which they speak, they speak very cleanly without much of a regional accent, another indication of this is the dress code that they tend to use (suits & dresses / smart clothing), however some characters such as the killer and the informer show hints towards the working class social group, this is shown through their clothing which is less smart than the detective or Ellie who wear smart and more formal clothes.
