How does your media product represent particular social groups?

‘Typical Teenager’The social groups that are represented within our opening sequence are professional therapists and teenage girls. The general representation of teenage girls in media is of them being slightly ‘boy obsessed’ emotional and disobedient. We attempted to slightly alter this representation as we tried to portray her as mentally unstable. However, the stereotypical ‘depressed teenager’ was represented in our opening sequence. We displayed this by the voice-over, the tone and language used portrays her insecurity. Also, as she tears photographs it also indicates obsession and aggression. Her codes of clothing are typical of a teenager as she is wearing skinny jeans and boots. Our character is also quite appealing which allows the audience to be attracted to our film.

Professional TherapistWe also represented the ‘stereotypical female therapist’ who are normally dressed in smart clothing and are known to be professional and rather academic. We represented this stereotype through codes of clothing/gesture as well as the plotline of our thriller. Codes of clothing are vital when representing any archetype. The therapists identity isn't revealed in the opening sequence. However, designing her costume was extremely important.
