• The Haymarket Affair had a lasting negative impact on American society because it damaged the reputation of organized labor unions during the late 1800s and early 1900s. As mentioned in the excerpt, “The Haymarket Affair forever damaged the reputation of the radical Knights of Labor workers’ union and hampered the labor movement for decades…” Instead of labor unions and business owners being able to work out their disagreements and reach compromises that could benefit both parties, a sense of distrust and frustration between them took hold. The violence and chaos of the Haymarket Affair increased the gap between labor and management, as well as caused the government to have to intervene militarily to restore order.
