In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of existing media products?

My trailer was based on the popular television programme “The Only Way is Essex”. We explored the Parody side of the media product so this gave us leeway to challenge the conventions of the already existing show.

Starting with the characters, we over exaggerated the vein aspect, that the show is so well known for, by over applying make up and fake tan. We then dressed in similar clothes and had similar hair style but focussed heavily on the effort they put into their looks.

I even met some of the original cast of the show TOWIE. Joey Essex (right) and Diags (Left). I also tweeted them our parody to ask for some feedback but, not surprisingly, I didn’t hear back from any of them.

The clothes we wore were from primark, however we printed off our own labels with similar names to the expensive brands such as “Ralph Lauren” as “Ralf Laura” and “SuperDry” as “SuperWet” etc. By doing this we made the clothes seem tacky and cheap but also with an element of humour to make the audience laugh. The characters wearing these “brands” think they’re cool however the fact they look so tacky, it challenges the conventions of the expensive branded clothes that are so popular in TOWIE.
