real media products?

For my a2 media coursework I had to create a media portfolio, compromising a main product (the music video) and ancillary texts.

There are many theories by many theorists that we had to take into consideration when creating our music video, one of these being Todorov’s theory.

His theory can apply to our music video as, firstly there is a disruption of the equilibrium by some action, where Conor Maynard begins singing in the studio.

Secondly, a recognition that there has been a disruption, where Conor Maynard’s attention is drawn to many girls as they appear in the music video.

Thirdly, an attempt to repair the disruption, by him eventually receiving a female’s phone number and dancing with the females at the party and finally, the reinstatement of the equilibrium, where he appears to be singing in the studio once again.

Andrew Goodwin’s theory can also be applied to our music video, as there seems to be a relationship between the visuals and the lyrics. Where the song says “Girls,Girls,Girls”, there are three fast cuts of girls dancing.

The use of closeups maintains a motif, which is another belief of Andrew’s. As Conor Maynard is dressed youthfully in hoodies etc, this motif has well and truly been maintained.

Using conventions of a real media product, in relation to our music video.

Conor Maynard dresses in typical youth wear, which is hoodies, jeans, caps etc, and we have followed this convention in our media product.

The use of the recording studio was also a convention followed up from Conor Maynard’s music video for Can’t say no, as we believed it would make the music video look more realistic.

We filmed another part of our music video in Banksy Tunnel, which is full of graffiti, clearly being a type of location that teenagers would typically hang around and flirt with women while doing so.

We used animations in the music video where he sings “cant say no”, similarly seen in his actual music video.

Challenging forms and conventions of real media products

We have tried to challenge the conventions of pop/ electro-pop music videos by making the females dress in an appropriate manner, showing off their natural beauty through close-ups instead of their body parts. This gives off a significant encounter towards females, possibly suggesting women should be loved for what they naturally look like.

There are many meanings that could be interpreted to our video like for example, it may be seen as a music video based upon temptations of a young teenage male, who just cannot say no to a pretty female. Also, he may be seen as a humble young man as he behaves like a gentleman around them, which grabs the females’ attention making them all want him by letting them hold onto him for protection possibly.

Cd cover

Usually Conor Maynard’s cd covers are plain and simple, with just one central image, however this convention has been challenged so it is possible for Conor to possibly gain a wider target audience for his music, by the use of more brighter colours.

On the front cover of the CD, Conor appears to be pointing his two fingers at the words “Can’t Say No”, giving off an impression that he is somewhat confident and that the words cant say no apply to him.

On the back of the CD there is a no entry sign, which may relate to the girls in a way, as he “never see them coming, I just watch them go, take control”, meaning even though they play hard to get, with the no entry, he still gets them in the end.

Advert

This advert was chosen over the others as there was a clear link between the front cover of the cd and the central image of the advert, which follows the conventions of Conor Maynard’s cd covers etc.

Just like the cd cover, the advert lacks the typical plain look and instead there is a use of a brighter range colours.
