IN WHAT WAY DOES YOUR FILM NOIR SEQUENCE INCORPORATES GENERIC CONVENTIONS ?

Page 3: Question 1

• Our film was set around the 60s – 70s however it does include some more of the classic film noir convention , examples of the conventions that we had used throughout the film included the hard boiled detective convention , this convention is shown in our film by both the detective and the informer characters mainly because they are both professionals in their profession. Another generic film noir convention that is shown in our film is the stereotype on the men in film noir being the dominant gender compared to the passive woman characters ho are considered to be the subordinates , this is portrayed in our film during the small chase scene between elide and the unknown killer , because Ellie is the defenseless woman who is running away from the killer she is depicted has having no power in this situation compared to the killer who is chasing her with the intent of murder.

• Overall in our film we do use the more well known and classic conventions ( eg. Nighttime , black and white colors) , we combined these classic conventions with our modern time period in film noir terms to create a modern film noir with a conventional twist.

HOW DOES OUR SEQUENCE DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE THESE CONVENTIONS?

Page 5: Question 1

• Because our sequence mainly use the more classic film noir conventions we tend to develop the conventions and not change them , an example of this is that we did not switch the main gender film noir convention round to add our twist to our film , we chose to do this because we wanted to stick to the old classic aspect of film noir so we supported the men dominant and women subordinates convention and used and developed it in our film ( Ellie and killer chase scene) , another convention that we developed was the theme of mystery , we shown this at the end of the chase scene between Ellie and the killer by fading to black to keep the audience intrigued and interested , because we wanted to keep the conventions simple we chose not to change them at all .

Did our use of conventions indicate what other film noir have influenced our work?

Page 7: Question 1

• We took some influence from films such as the big combo and sunset boulevard , we where influenced by these films because they are both based on the classic conventions that we decided to base our film on , for example the big combo has the convention of the hard boiled detective in which we decided to base our detective character slightly on the detective in the big combo , also from the big combo and sunset boulevard we used the convention of crime / murder because of it being one of the more classic conventions ,and because we chose to use these classic conventions we were inspired by these films.
