In what ways does your media product use,

develop or challenge forms and conventions of

real media products?

The genre I chose to portray in my media product was

thriller and I decided to focus on the sub genre of

horror thriller in particular. To give me an idea of what I

needed to include to make it horror thriller I watched

the opening two minutes of 4 horror thrillers. These

were:

PIN (1988)

THE SIXTH SENSE (1999)

THE CELL (2000)

THE RESIDENT (2011)

I then deconstructed them to see the common

features of the opening scenes by looking at

camerawork, editing, sound and mise en scene.

The features that I found to be typically present

from my research were:

★Suspense

★Tension

★Excitement

★Plot

twists/cliffhangers

★Emphasised the

danger the protagonist

was in

From these 5 common elements I decided to

include 4 of them in my media product. I didn’t

include excitement as a main element because it was

a horror thriller and did not think it was appropriate

for the sub genre I was portraying.
