OperationThefunctionofthedehumidifieristoremovemoisture(inthevaporstate)fromanairstream.Thisisaccomplishedbyexposingtheairtoanadsorbingmedia(desiccant)inasealedairstream(process).Afterthedesiccanthasadsorbedmoisture,itisexposedtoasecondairstreamatanelevatedtemperature(reactivation).Thiscausesthemoisturetobedrivenoutofthedesiccantpreparingitformoremoistureadsorption.Thisprocessisdoneonacontinuousbasis,providingaconstantdryingprocess.Thetwoairstreams(processandreactivation)areseparatedbyseals,whichcontactthedesiccantmedia.Figure1illustratestherelationshipofthesealsandairflowpattern.Thedehumidifierisdesignedwiththetwoairstreamsflowinginoppositedirections(counterflow)therebymaximizingtheenergyefficiencyoftheequipment.

2.1 How the Quest PowerDry 4800D Pro E WorksTheQuestPowerDry4800DProEhastwoseparateairstreamsthatrunthroughit–ProcessandReactivation(Fig.1).

3.1 InspectionThoroughlyinspectthemachinetoinsurenodamagehasoccurredduringshippingoronthejobsite.

3.2 LocationNote the following precautions when locating the Quest PowerDry 4800D Pro E:

ThePowerDry4800DProEisdesignedtobeusedindoorsoroutdoors.

Ifthehumidareaisverylarge,dehumidificationcanbeimprovedbyaddinganoutletducttocirculateprocessairtostagnantareas.

3.3 Set-UpWhenconditionswarranttheuseofadesiccantdehumidifier,useoneofthesetupsdescribedbelowtoachieveefficientdrying,whileavoidingsecondarydamage.ReviewSection2.1tounderstandthedesiccantdryingprocess.AlwaysensurethattheReactivationOutletductisventedtotheoutdoorstominimizethepossibilityofsecondarydamage.

Neutral Pressure Setup

Manydryingapplicationsrequireneutralpressureoperation.Inthissetup,theProcessAirInletpullsairfromtheaffectedarea(dryingchamber)andreturnsdried,processedairtotheaffectedareaviatheProcessAirOutlet.

TheReactivationAirInletandOutletarebothductedtotheoutdoors(orleftopeniftheunitissetupoutside).

Positive Pressure Setup

ForPositivePressureoperation,theProcessAirInletpullsairfromoutsidethedryingchamber,whiletheProcessAirOutletisductedintothechamber.

3.4 DuctingTheductrequirementsofthePowerDry4800DProEaremuchmorecriticalthanthoseofrefrigerant-baseddehumidifiers.ALL SUPPLY AND RETURN AIR DUCTING FOR THE PowerDry 4800D Pro E MUST BE AIR AND VAPOR TIGHT.Thisisextremelyimportantforproperperformance.Ensurethatreactivationdischargeairdoesnotentertheprocessorreactivationinlets.

Usingexcessductlengthsignificantlyreducesairflowvolumethroughduct.Thisistrueinanyapplication.Ifthejobathandneedsashortlengthofduct,cutasectiontotheappropriatelength.Ifairflowisrestrictedbyexcesslength,performancewillsuffer.Thesamecanbesaidofexcessbendsintheducting.

TwodifferentductsizesareusedonthePowerDry4800DProE.AllductingmaterialsareavailablefromTherma-StorLLC (seeaccessorieslistinSection1).

Process inlet / Reactivation inlet: 18” flex duct.

Toattachflexductstotheprocessairintake,pushthewireofthefirstfewloopsbeyondthe2holesintheductcollar.Pushthemetalrodthroughtheductandductcollarpiercingtheductintwoplaces.Tapeorahoseclampcanbeusedtocreateanairtightseal.Alternatively,theductwirecanbepushedpasttheweldbeadsontheductcollarandtheductcanbesecuredwithhoseclampsorratchetingstraps.Ifusingonlyoneinletconnection,theothercanbeleftclosed.

Process outlet: 18” flex or lay flat plastic duct.

Toattachflexductstotheprocessairoutlet,pushthewireofthefirstfewloopsbeyondthe2holesintheductcollar.Pushthemetalrodthroughtheductandductcollarpiercingtheductintwoplaces.Tapeorahoseclampcanbeusedtocreateanairtightseal.Alternatively,theductwirecanbepushedpasttheweld

beadsontheductcollarandtheductcanbesecuredwithhoseclampsorratchetingstraps.

Whenusing18”layflatducting,slipovertheoutletcollarandzip-tieorducttapeinplace.

Reactivation outlet: 10” flex duct or lay flat.

Toattachflexducttothereactivationairoutlet,pushthewireofthefirstcoupleofloopsbeyondtheweldbeadsonanoutletcollar.Securewithhoseclamp.

3.5 Avoiding Secondary DamageTheQuestPowerDry4800DProEisapowerfultoolcapableofremovingagreatdealofwaterfrommostenvironments.Caremustbetakentoavoidsecondarydamageofover-dryingandorunexpectedcondensation.

TheQuestPowerDry4800DProEremovesvaporwaterfromtheincomingprocessairstreamandtransfersittotheoutgoingreactivationairstream.Thereactivationexhaustairishotandwet.

Takecaretopreventthereactivationexhaustairstreamfromcausingsecondarydamageduetocondensation.AlwaysensuretheQuestPowerDry4800DProEislocatedwiththereactivationoutletpointedsuchthatreactivationairwillNOTbedrawnbackintothestructure.

TheQuestPowerDry4800DProEdoesnotproduceliquidwaterinternaltothemachine.Thereisnocondensatepumpandnodrainhose.

TheQuestPowerDry4800DProEdesiccantdehumidifierwillcontinuetoremovewaterfromalreadydry,coldair.Itispossibletoover-dryobjectsandorstructures.

Caremustbetakentoavoidsecondarydamageduetoover-drying.

3.6 Electrical RequirementsA480volt,3phasepowersourceisrequiredtooperatetheQuestPowerDry4800DProE.

Alllocalandstatecodesmustbestrictlyadheredtoandgoodelectricalpracticesshouldbefollowedtoachievethebestinstallationpossible.ThePowerDry4800DProEmustbeproperlywiredtoanadequatepowersource.Seriousdamagetothemotorsandcontrolscanoccurifincorrectvoltageisapplied.

(SeeElectrical Schematicdrawinginthebackofthismanualforinternalwiring.)

4 Operating InstructionsRefertotheOperatingInstructionslabellocatednexttothecontrolpanelofyourPowerDry4800DProE.

User-suppliedpowercord,cordgrip,andbranchprotectionappropriatefortheelectricalloadmustbesupplied.SeedeviceforFLArating.

TheQuestPowerDry4800DProEdehumidifiercomescompleteandreadyforoperation.Allthatisrequiredistoprovidetheproperpowersource,propanesupply,andductconnections(describedabove).

4.1 Connect and Start-Up Procedure1. LockoutPowerSource.

2. Wireunit480Volt3Phase.

3. VerifySelectorSwitchissettoSTANDBY.

4. EngagePowerSourceandturnMainDisconnecttoON.

5. VerifyPHASEOUTlightisoff,ifnot,re-wirepowersourcetocorrectphaseorder.

6. COOLDOWNlightwillcomeonfor5minutes.

7. SetSelectorSwitchtoRUN.

8. Setprocessdampertoobtainamaximumof1.5”watercolumnpressureasreadonpressuregauge.

4.2 Cool Down1. SetSelectorSwitchtoSTANDBY.

2. COOLDOWNlightwillcomeonfor5minutes.

3. WhenCOOLDOWNlightisoff,MainDisconnectcanbe switchedtoOFF.

FailuretofollowCOOL DOWN PROCEDUREmayresultindamagetounitduetooverheating.ALWAYS followCOOL DOWN PROCEDUREbeforeshuttingunitdown.

4.3 Shut Down & Disconnect Procedure 1. VerifyCOOLDOWNlightisnotilluminatedandCoolDownProcedurehasbeenfollowed.

2. TurnMainDisconnectSwitchtoOFF.

3. DisengagePowerSource.

4. LockOutPowerSource.

5. DisconnectPowerCable.

5 Control Panel5.1 Main DisconnectThemaindisconnectswitchespowerfromthesourcetothepanel.Powermustbedisconnectedatthesourcepriortoaccessingcontrolpanel.AccesstothecontrolpanelwithpowerappliedisONLYbyqualifiedservicepersonnelwiththeappropriatepersonalprotectiveequipment PowerispresentuptodisconnecteveninOFFposition.Disconnectpoweratthesourcebeforeopeningpanel.

5.2 Standby LightTheSTANDBYindicatorlampilluminatestoindicatethatpowerissuppliedtothecontrolpanel.

5.3 Phase OutThePHASEOUTindicatorlampilluminatestoindicatethatthe3-phasepowerisnotcorrectlywiredintothepowersupply.Changethewiringatthepowersupplyconnectiontocorrectthephaseorder.

5.4 Selector SwitchWhentheselectorswitchismovedtothe“RUN”position,thePowerDry4800DProEstartsdehumidifying.Themachinewillcontinuetodehumidifyinallconditionsuntilthepoweristurnedoff.Nodehumidistatisprovidedtomonitorprocessinletaircondition(seeover-drywarningsection3.5).Anexternalcontrol(dehumidistat,thermostatorothercontact)canbewiredinplaceofthejumperacrossterminals3040and3042.Theexternalcontrolmustbedesignedtooperatea115VACcircuit. ThePowerDry4800DProEhasonecontroldevice,thepowerswitch.Whenthepowerswitchismovedtothe“on”positionyourportabledesiccantisdehumidifying.Themachinewillcontinuetodehumidifyinallconditionsuntilthepoweristurnedoff:Thereisnodehumidistat(seeover-drywarningsection2.2).

5.5 Alarm (Light and Horn)Thealarmindicatorlampilluminates(andhornsounds)toindicatethatafaultconditionexists.Thefaultconditionscouldbe:

•MotorOverload(processorreactivation)

•ReactivationTemperaturegreaterthan375°F

•Nodehumidification(i.e.saturatedwheel)

•Lowreactivationairflow

•Stuckheatercontactor

Anexternalalarmcanbewiredtoterminals3080(power)andX2(neutral).Thiswouldsupply115VACduringanalarmcondition.

5.6 Hour MeterThehourmeterwillrunwheneverthePowerDry4800DProEisoperating.Thishourmetermeasuresthecumulativetimeofoperationinone-tenthhourincrements.Thismeterisoftenusedtoverifyhoursonajobortoschedulemaintenance.

6 Maintenance6.1 General MaintenanceAdefinitivetimescheduleshouldbeestablishedforinspectingallrotatingpartsandcomponents.Inspectionrequirementsdependonthefrequencyofoperation,transport,andoperatingconditions.Periodicallychecktheconditionoftheairfilter,rotatingparts,andfastenerstoensuretheyaresecureandinproperworkingorder.Periodicallycheckairflowtomakesuretherearenoobstructionstoairflowinoutletorinletductwork.

Recommendedminimuminspections:

•Uponinstallation

•After1weekofoperation.

•Annuallythereafteroruponlossofperformance.

6.2 Cabinet

Disconnect power before removing access panels.

Removepanelfastenersandpanelsfromunittoaccessinternalcomponents.Theconditionofthecabinetgasketsshouldbeobservedduringinspectionandservicingtoinsureagoodseal.Anyleaksmustbesealedandpanelssecurelyfastenedforproperdehumidifieroperation.

6.3 FilterThemaintenanceintervalforthefilterdependsdirectlyonthecleanlinessoftheairenteringthedehumidifier.Itissuggestedthataprogrambeestablishedtoassurethatthefiltersarereplacedorcleanedpriortobecomingcloggedtothepointtheycreateasystemproblem.

Threealuminum(20”x20”x2”)airfiltersmustbecheckedregularly.Twofiltersarelocatedneartheprocessairinlet.Theotheroneislocatednearthereactivationairinlet.

Washthefilterswithfreshwater.Cleanthefilterfromthedownstreamside,forcingdebristowardthefilterinlet.Drythefilterscompletelybeforeinstallingtheminunit.Replacementfilterscanbeorderedfromthefactoryorpurchasedlocallyifavailable.

DO NOToperatetheunitwithoutthefiltersorwithlesseffectivefiltersasthedesiccantwheelinsidetheunitwillbecomecloggedandrequiredisassemblytoclean.

6.4 Blower and MotorBlowerandmotorbearingsarepermanentlylubricatedanddonotrequiremaintenance.Blowerwheel-inspectwheelbladesforaccumulationofdustanddirt.Cleanthoroughlywithcompressedairandorvacuum.Thewheelshouldnotstrikethehousingortheinletring.Makesurewheelisrotatingintheproperdirection.

6.5 Drive MotorThemediadrivemotorispermanentlylubricatedandrequiresnomaintenance.

6.6 Rotor Drive ChainAspringloadedtensionerkeepsthechainsufficientlytensioned.Checkthechainforsignsofexcessivewear.Replaceasnecessary.Ifadditionaltensionisrequired,simplytightenthenutsonthetensionspringsasrequired.

6.7 SealsHightemperaturesealsseparatetheprocessandreactivationcompartments.Normally,thesealswillnotrequireserviceorreplacement.However,shoulddamageoccur,orifpoorperformanceastheresultofanairleakissuspected,thefollowinginspectionmustbeperformedtodeterminewhetherthesealsshouldbereplaced:

Inspection:

1) Turntheunitoffandremovetheaccesscovers.

2) Visuallyinspectforgapsbetweenthedesiccantmedia

andtheseals.

3) Ifsignificantgaps,wear,ordamageareobserved, thesealneedstobereplaced.

6.8 Desiccant MediaThesilicageldesiccantmediasuppliedwiththedehumidifierwilllastindefinitelyunderidealconditions.Duetothenatureofdesiccantstheymakeverygoodfilters.Thelifeofthedesiccantisdirectlyrelatedtotheairbornecontaminatespassedthroughit.Atmosphericcontaminants,exposuretoacidicgases/orairstreams,andcontactwithpetroleumbasedairborneparticlescanreducetheefficiencyofthedesiccantmedia.Thepreferredmethodofcleaningistoblowdustoutwithcompressedair.Properfiltrationandpreventingcontactwithchemicalswillgreatlyimprovethelifeofthedesiccant.Inspectthefaceofthemediatoseethatnosurfacedamagehasoccurred.Ifdamageisnoticed,pleasecontactTherma-Storat1-800-533-7533forassistance.Therotorshouldturnsmoothlyupontheshaft,ifnotcheckthesupportbearings.

Servicing the Quest PowerDry 4800D Pro E with its high voltage circuitry presents a health hazard which could result in death, serious bodily injury, and/or property damage. Only qualified service people should service this unit.

ELECTRICAL SHOCK HAZARD: Electrical power must be present to perform some tests; these tests should be performed only by a qualified service person.

10 Detailed Sequence of Events – Control Operation1. TurningonMainDisconnectatdehumidifierprovides480VAC,3phasepowertothecontrolpanel.

a. STANDBYlampilluminates.

b. Rotormotorterminals,3470andX2,energizeprovidingthedesiccantmotorwith115VACpower. Desiccantwheelbeginstorotate.

4. Onafaultfromanoverloadrelay(OLR-PorOLR-R),thelatchingalarmrelay(AR)energizes.Theeffectislistedinlines3athrough3d. TurntheselectorswitchtoSTANDBY,allowingthecooldowncycletocompletebeforeturningOFFthemaindisconnect.FollowLockOut–TagOutproceduretode-energizethepowercordsupplyingthe4800.Resettheoverloadrelaylocatedinthecontrolcabinet.Closeandsecurecabinetdoor.EnergizeunitfollowingproperLockOut–TagOutprocedure. Probablecausesforafaultfromanoverloadrelayareinsufficientrestrictionofairflow(overloadingmotorbyallowingexcessiveairflow)orblower/motorfailure.

5. Onafaultfromtheinternalprocessdehumidistatthatpersistsfor20minutes,thelatchingalarmrelay(AR)energizes.Theeffectislistedinlines3athrough3d.TDR1providesa10minutedelayfortheremovalofresidualhumiditydesiccantduringstartup. ResetalarmbyturningtheselectorswitchtoSTANDBY. Probablecausesforafaultfromtheinternaldehumidistatareheaterfailureordesiccantfailure.

6. Onafaultfromastuckheatercontactor,theAlarmRelaywillenergizeandthereactivationblowerwillremainoncontinuously.TheRotorwillcontinuetoturn,buttheprocessblowerwillNOTcomeon.Shutoffpowerwiththemaindisconnectandreplacetheinoperablecontactortocleartheerror.

No dehumidistat is provided to monitor process inlet air condition (see over-dry warning section 3.5). An external control (dehumidistat, thermostat or other dry contact) can be wired in place of the jumper across terminals 1 and 3082. The external control must be designed to operate a 115 VAC circuit. Contact closure will start dehumidification. A control wired across terminals 1 and 3082 will be in series with the selector switch. Turn the selector switch to RUN to operate the dehumidifier from an external control.
