From the Pastor’s Desk

Blessed Sunday! It’s sure been an interesting winter so far - my first back to Fort Wayne after moving back from the northern part of the diocese. Two weeks ago school was closed almost the entire week due to cold and ice (what should have been Cath-olic Schools Week). Then in true Indiana fashion the weather shot up for a cou-ple days, only to plummet again and hit us with another blast of icy snow. And of course, flu season came in full swing amidst these drastic temperature chang-es.

I hope everyone is remaining healthy or returning to good health. As we battle sickness and the elements, we should be reminded of our spiritual battle in this life: to stay constant in our dedication to the Lord. We must trust his grace and give ourselves uncompromisingly to him each day in prayer. Our Sunday Mass strengthens us in this fight and gives us the grace to move on. As we open our hearts to his Eucharistic presence, the Lord fills us with his light and life.

There has also been quite a bit happening in the parish recently. This weekend we had some time for reflection for the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Com-munion, and also a date night for couples of the parish - with food, fellowship, and prayer in adoration. (I can’t tell you how that went, since I’m writing be-fore this all actually happens - hello from the past!) And next Saturday HASA is hosting a trivia night, so come on out and enjoy some fun with fellow parish-ioners!

Many people have been asking me about skiing. There have been some bumps in the road with the weather for several weeks, but last Monday I was able to go up to Michigan again with Father Drew and do a little snowboarding. It was a great way to relax and worth the wait - just another reminder from the Lord that when our plans don’t work out and we feel frustrated, we should always bring Him our thoughts, emotions, and desires so that He can prepare us to receive the grace and blessings He has in store for us. (On a personal & practical note, we’re taking a ski trip to Northern Michigan at the end of the month for some pre-Lent vacation time, so the couple Mondays we’ve been able to board near Kalamazoo have been much-needed preparation. - Don’t worry, you’ll have me back in one piece!)

May God bless you all abundantly this next week with the gifts of faith, hope, and love!

~Fr. Zak
