Before picking up, we suggest you call ahead to check current inventories.

Custom Work

In addition to the standard items shown in this catalog, we can custom make virtually any type of millwork component. We have the tooling to make thousands of crisp, historically accurate molding profiles. We make hard-to-find items such as curved or oversize cornice moldings, straight and radius wood gutters,bowed windows, extra wide or massive molding profiles, and many other specialty items.

How to Order

You can contact us by phone or email, Monday thru Friday between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM. When sending a tracing or sketch of a molding for pricing, be sure to include the cross-sectional dimensions of the profile even if it is a full size tracing. Include the species desired, the total footage, and indicate if lengths are to be random or specified. (There is generally an up-charge for specified lengths.) Specialty items can be boxed and shipped by parcel service or common carrier throughout the country. Our contact information is listed below.

Prices and Return Policy

Items kept in stock may be returned in undamaged, original condition within 15 days from date of purchase, accompanied by an original sales slip. Returned items are subject to a 15% restocking charge. Custom work is non-returnable. Our current price list is included with this catalog and covers all listed items. All prices and selections are subject to change without notice based on current market conditions.

1. Do not back-prime wood gutters. Do not splice gutter runs using a butt joint seal only. Prepare a deep web joint for sealant using a rough carving tool in a die grinder. Grind a 3/8” deep mortise spanning 1” on either side of the joint. Use the same preparation for inside and outside miters, and for end stops.

2. Using a recommended polyurethern adhesive caulk, first coat the end wood on either side of the joint; then assemble and fill the prepared mortise with caulk, taking care not to overfill above the level of the bottom of the trough.

3. Wood gutters should have a slight pitch to drain water. Wood gutters that are to be sheet metal lined should not be pitched. Pre-drill cedar gutters and use only stainless steel fasteners. Contact the mill for additional information.

1. The bottom block of the balusters should align with the face of the riser, the face of the outside stringer, and the face of the gallery board in each direction.

2. The bottom block of the newel should be long enough to hang below the ceiling and the sloping stair soffit.

3. Nosing overhang “N” should be approximately 6/5 of tread thickness “T”.

4. The minimum required width “W” of the newel should be the width of the baluster “B” plus twice the nosing overhang “N”, plus 1/8”.

5. Construction Sequence: 1- Lay out and install newels in correct locations 2- Cut and fit open stringers (cut and mitered stringers) 3- Cut and install risers and gallery boards 4- Scribe, cut and install wall skirts 5- Install treads, nosing returns, landing nosings, and gallery nosings 6- Install handrails 7- Fit and install balusters 8- Install battens, base molding, and other moldings

1. The layout and construction of architectural assemblies using columns and pilasters are generated from the column and/or pilaster centerlines. Component features such as cornice overhangs and deck projections are calculated as offsets from these centerlines. Always lay out the finish first, and then work back to get the framing profiles needed to accommodate the finish configuration.

2. The lower column diameter “D” (Major Diameter) is measured at the lower end of the column shaft, as shown. The upper column diameter (Minor Diameter) is measured at the neck of the column. For classical columns, the upper diameter is approximately 5/6 of the lower diameter. Expressed as a decimal, this is between .83 and .85 x the lower diameter.

3. The tapering or reduction in the shaft of a classical column follows specific rules and does not taper in a straight line. Generally, the shaft is straight for the first 2/5 of the height, and then gradually diminishes in an arc over the upper 3/5 of the height until the diameter is reduced by about 1/6.

4. The Module (M) is one half the lower column diameter - or the distance from the center of the column to the outer circumference of the lower shaft.

5. The proportioning system shown will work for any diameter column. Begin by measuring the column’s or pilaster’s lower diameter in inches, and then divide by 2 to get the module. Multiply the module by the decimal factors shown on the drawing to get the size or offset location of any selected feature or molding, in inches.

6. The module is used as the basic proportioning unit in preference to the diameter because it establishes all dimensions in relation to the column centerline. The use of column centerlines provides the most efficient and least error prone system for coordinating layouts between the mill and the construction site.

7. The drawing depicts a common version of the mutullary Doric order with typical ratios. The most common variation from these proportions in wood construction entails elongating the column shaft or pedestal height, while keeping the molding profiles and relationships unchanged.

8. The fundamental layout rule of classical construction is that the column and beam should be vertically aligned in section, asshown and the width of the beam should be the same as the upper, or minor, diameter of the column shaft.

9. Natural wood expands and contracts across the grain as ambient humidity fluctuates. These fluctuations are greater in exterior environments and can lead to open joints and other defects, which may show up after the work is completed. In order to avoid these potential defects, care should be taken in detailing the joints, especially with larger scale assemblies. Because these construction details vary with the scale of the assembly, they are not specified here. Contact the mill for specific recommendations.
