welcome

Here we go again another year is upon us, and I for one can’t wait to get started. I’m not one to usually make resolutions, but this

year I have an urge to make a difference in the world no matter how small it may be. I am intending to do the Burghley Rat Race in Stamford for charity (even though I’m doing ONLY the 13 mile course! Go to: www.ratracedirtyweekend.com).

I think we should make this the year of not the “Xfactor” (although I hate to admit I watch it!), but the feel good factor and to try and help us all put our best foot forward. You’ll find some top tips from Lincoln’s David Lloyd gym on how to get fit (pg6), and some delicious recipes (pg26) to reward yourself after the hard slog! Lincs Boat Training are still

sharing their expertise (pg20), and we have concocted a handy pull out pre-season check-list to get your boat back on the water (pg28). Happy reading.

January 2014 saw the London Boat Show celebrate its diamond anniversary. It’s 60th show is certainly something to celebrate. On the 4th January the doors opened on the Show in the capital, it was packed with World, European and UK boat and product launches including the incredible 40m Sunseeker boat worth a mere 16.5million, too big to go into the Excel building it was pictured on the Thames.

Throughout the 9-day Show, hundreds of exhibitors showcased an unrivalled selection of boats, marine products, accessories, services, clothing ranges, chandlery, electronics, engines and more as well as offering a wide range

of activities that entertained the whole family - there was something to suit every taste and budget.

Sir Ben Ainslie joined the Show on Wednesday 8th January and his J.P.Morgan BAR AC45 catamaran was on display for the full nine days. Along with the lovely HRH The Princess Royal, Suzi Perry, Nick Knowles and James Corden to name a few famous faces.

Guests wrapped up warm to venture outside where there was an array of historic and iconic feature boats. Climbing aboard many boats such as the Old Thames fireboat the “Massey Shaw” was an experience in itself.

For thousands of centuries, the human body has thrived on physical activity; this would be tracking and

hunting animals, gathering nuts, building shelter or travelling. Interestingly, the long periods of inactivity usually seen in most workplaces goes against this expansive history and actually signals DNA to sequence unhealthy proteins, while under-sequencing healthy proteins. So you could say sitting down is a killer as this behaviour goes against what we are built for!

As a species we have evolved to carry out large scale multi-joint movement, and some scientists would say the only reason for a larger brain is to control such complex movement. To add to this, others have championed the view that humans have evolved to be endurance runners. Several anatomical features have been identified that differentiate us from our ancestors and have allowed us to become the best long distance runners within our primate family tree.

So after the whirlwind festive period, there should be positive amounts of motivation swirling around in your brain that urge you to begin an exercise program that potentially could reinvigorate your life.

Before embarking on any exercise, understanding how the body works from a functional perspective is the key to success. A functional movement screening assessment of the way your body moves highlights any underlying problems that may inhibit progression towards your goal. Upon completion of this screening process overactive, inactive and possibly inactive muscles can be discovered. This gives you

a clear picture of the functional state of your anatomy. Corrective exercises can then be incorporated into the first building block of your exercise program, to correct imbalances and reduce risk of injury.

Functional training according to American strength coach Mike Boyle “is a system that encourages the training of balance and the balancing of training.” However, research suggests 45% of people who begin exercise programs dropout due to feelings of displeasure i.e. sensations associated with extreme muscle ache and breathlessness. The more pleasurable exercise is the more chance you have of repeating it. Research that training at pleasurable levels of intensity is enough to elicit gains in body composition and cardiovascular fitness, the idea that you do not have to train maximally every time is a concept not lost on Ancient Olympians who developed a training system called “the Tetras” which was a 4 day cycle of varying training intensity that they used to train for the Olympic Games nearly 3000 years ago.

On December 14th 2013, Burton Waters Boat Sales, held their annual Mulled Wine & Mince Pies Weekend; a successful event that thanks their customers, locals and Moorers at the end of each year. This time however, following a successful year of getting people to return to the water, Burton Waters felt the need to give back something spectacular. The family run Boat Sales office is now one of the largest boat traders in the UK, with sales reaching into Europe, and in recent years have become East Coast dealers for the Luxury

A night filled with live music to follow a successful day. Performing that night were Jack Walton, Jamie Lee Harrison as seen on the most recent X Factor boot camp, ‘the funny guy from Facebook’ Lloyd Wilkinson, and talented singer Tay Cousins. Other skilled local singers were Daniel Lee Lambert & Sophie Hopcroft. Don’t miss our‘Back to Boating’ Day in early May where more fun can be had. Unpowered Craft LicencesThe use of canoes and other unpowered craft on the majority of inland waterways requires a licence, which can be obtained from the relevant authority.  If you belong to the British Canoe Union, the necessary licence for some (but not all) navigation authorities is included with the BCU membership so this is well worth the investment. You then have not only a license, but the ability to paddle on 4,500km of waterways, third party liability insurance is thrown in, six free Canoe Focus magazines & 10% off at leading Canoe & Kayak retailers nationwide so visit www.canoe-england.org.uk. Happy paddling.

The Brayford Waterfront with a live stage

Another tropical “tail” from Rio

Lincoln Festival, The Brayford Waterfront 14th June 2014This arrives this year with live music, free activities, a carnival procession and a firework finale.

The Lincoln Festival is now a popular annual event and brings street stalls, have-a-go sporting activities, live music and entertainment to the Brayford Waterfront.

The Lincoln Festival is a day perfect for the whole family and the firework finale is not to be missed!

Lincoln OdeonPlaying now:‘I, Frankenstein’ places the legendary creature in a contemporary setting, where he gets caught up in a conflict between two warring supernatural factions.

Set in the present day, Frankenstein’s monster continues to roam the earth. He is blessed with superhuman strength, stamina, speed and - most importantly - immortality. But immortality comes at a price, as the creature becomes embroiled in a war that threatens humankind, fending off ferocious demons desperate to discover the secret behind his creation.

‘I, Frankenstein’ is based on a graphic novel by Kevin Grevioux (Underworld).

300: Rise of an Empire (Sequel): Release date 7th March 2014After its victory over Leonidas’ 300, the Persian Army under the command of Xerxes marches towards the major Greek city-states. The Democratic city of Athens, first on the path of Xerxes’ army,

bases its strength on its fleet, led by admiral Themistocles. Themistocles is forced to an unwilling alliance with the traditional rival of Athens, oligarchic Sparta whose might lies with its superior infantry troops. But Xerxes still reigns supreme in numbers over sea and land. Sadly no Gerard Butler in this one, but certainly still worth a watch.

Rio 2: Release 4th April 2014Vibrant and full of energy, family adventure ‘Rio 2’ sees Blu swap the urban life in Rio for a tropical adventure in the wilderness of the Amazon.

After the high-flying antics of ‘Rio’, Blu and Jewel have nested in the city. However, Jewel can’t ignore the call of the wild and she takes the feathered family to the Amazon, where they reconnect with her long-lost relatives. But their arrival in the tropical forest ruffles a few feathers…

Pete Barnard is a man of many talents and we are glad that he can join us to share his wealth of experience.

As one of the eight RYA’s National Inland Waterways Trainers I am authorised to run RYA Inland Waterways Instructors Course. I ran one in July 2013 using, by kind permission, the Beal Homes Conference Room for theory lessons and Burton Waters Marina, Fosdyke

Canal, Brayford Pool, River Witham and the Stamp End Lock as our training areas together with my boat ‘Spindrift’ as the training Vessel.

Following the Lincoln course I was invited by the Rachel Andrews, the RYA Chief Instructor Motor Cruising and Power, to run another Instructors

boat training

Course on the Norfolk Broads at the beginning of October 2013 at the RYA Aspen Sea Training Centre located in Lowestoft. Excellent co-ordination by Jenny Luke the RYA Administrator ensured that the course started on the planned date. As per the Lincoln course this course ran for two days and qualified Instructors to run and issue the Inland Waterways Helmsman Certificates through their RYA Training Centre.

I travelled down to Lowestoft the day before the course was due to start to meet Roger Hindess and Dave Lennox the Aspen Sea Training Directors and to view their RYA Training Centre and the Training Vessel. They had booked me into the Wherry Hotel. On arrival at the Hotel I think some local strings had been pulled as I was told that I had been upgraded to a room with a balcony overlooking Oulton Broad!

On the first day after meeting the “under training” Instructors, Tim

Gower, Tiffany Howie and Stephen Bradnock we covered an introduction to the RYA, background to the Inland Waterways Helmsman Certificate and its commercial use, instructional techniques and the use of visual aids, collision avoidance, sound signals and waterways signage. Following the theory side of the course we took to the water and covered, steering, control of speed, turning, wind effect, berthing, understanding and the operations of locks, picking up buoys and man overboard drills. After a sandwich lunch we finished the day by completing more on water exercises. During this on water session all students were required to instruct their peers on all parts of the syllabus. Home work was set to ensure all candidates had knowledge on all parts of the syllabus and to prepare

All candidates took it in turns to go through the complete syllabus with him whilst their performances were moderated by Robbie Bell the RYA Regional Development Officer. All instructors courses have a moderator to ensure that teaching standards are maintained and all trainees have all the skills required to conduct the Inland Waterways Helmsman’s Course.

Starting off on the Salt Water side of the Oulton Broad Lock, Lothing Lake, Tony was instructed in the use of the engine controls, steering and the effect of the wind. Once these skills were mastered we penned through the Lock onto the Oulton Broad. Then we carried out various manoeuvres including man overboard drills and

picking up a Mooring Buoy. During these exercises which including turning the boat in its own length, figures of eights and rounding buoys we were closely followed by a hire boat. After he shouted us to stop he explained that he was lost and was following us, because we looked like we knew what we were doing, to avoid any shallows! Understanding his problem we acted as a pilot and took him to his required destination – our good turn for the day.

We then proceeded down the River Waveney to reach the Visitors Centre for our Lunch stop and to practise stern on moorings. Whilst on this passage we were lucky enough to spot a Kingfisher catching a fish whilst we passed no more than a metre away. Following another fine Lunch we made our way back to the Oulton Broad Lock to arrive at our planned time, so preventing traffic jams in Lowestoft.

Once through the Lock we carried out more man overboard drill and coming along side an old MOD Assault Craft before returning to the Marina. On the way back all candidates were debriefed on their performances and I’m glad to report all were successful and now join the ranks of the RYA Inland Waterways Instructors.

My thanks go to Robbie for his moderation and teaching inputs, Tim who acted a course photographer and to Roger and Dave of Aspen Sea Training who looked after our every need

ensuring the smooth running of the course. I look forwarded to visiting their excellent centre in the not too distant future.

my journeyWhen Lyn Challender entered the Burton Waters facebook competition on-line she never expected to win! Here’s her journey.................

The band of The Royal Marines

t hanks to Burton Waters we were very lucky to win two tickets to the London Boat Show 2014 and this was just the post-Christmas

antidote we needed to re-energise us. We arrived at 10am on launch day and expected to have to battle the crowds to find parking and get anywhere near any of the boats. Not so - we were pleasantly surprised by the civilised number of people visiting and the layout of the show, ensuring we didn’t feel herded like cattle round the stands. The main attractions were clearly secured by Princess, Sunseeker and Fairline, all different in their approach, but offering a level of luxury that is the lifestyle of millionaires. Sunseeker’s approach was ‘full on’ with an enormous screen blasting clips from Bond movies, a champagne bar and plenty of luxury motor yachts to tempt us. Princess went for a more unstated approach, offering a quietly professional approach for perhaps the more discerning motor yacht owner. We were disappointed with the Fairline range, who in our opinion simply couldn’t compete with Sunseeker or Princess. It was great to see Sealine back on their feet and we were impressed by their principled approach to re-launching the brand.

We were particularly interested to take a look on board some sailing yachts, with their practical yet equally luxurious accommodation and fittings. Designing boats clearly requires an approach that is a juxtaposition of artistic creativity and technical design.

There were plenty of stands offering a range of goods from sailing clothing, fenders and heating systems, to holidays, books and navigation equipment. We particularly enjoyed speaking to some very small, independent retailers, some of whom had travelled from Europe to share their inventions and ideas. We found a small retailer from Germany who sold personalised fender covers and had invented an amazing neoprene disc for

holding glasses, cups and bottles firm on surfaces. Fantastically simple, yet a brilliant invention. We also spoke to a very knowledgable man about Wifi connectivity on board - what he didn’t know about this subject isn’t worth mentioning!

There was so much to do and see and we easily filled our day at Excel with a few stops for coffee, cake and lunch at some of the many eateries situated within the arena. The atmosphere was relaxed, professional and accommodating to everyone’s tastes and needs. It was clear that everyone visiting the show had a shared interest and passion in boating and it was a privilege to be there.

We soaked up the atmosphere, chatted to a wide variety of people, learned a great deal and came away having spend an incredibly enjoyable, informative and relaxing day.

Thank you again Burton Waters!
