January 2019 Vol #47

I am very happy that the year 2018 was a memorable year for SSN. I am very happy that we are realizing our long cherished dream of becoming an autonomous college. The Minister of Human Resource Development, Shri. Prakash Javadekar, announced this news, at a media briefing in New Delhi on 20th March . I deem it a significant milestone in the history of SSN College of Engineering and my sincere thanks to all the faculty, staff and students who have played a major role in this achievement. SSN is now geared to do its best under the new system which offers greater academic autonomy and scale new heights in academic and research output.

It is indeed a matter of pride that an eminent person like Dr.Raj Reddy, Professor of Computer Science and Robotics, and Moza Bint Nasser Chair at Carnegie Mellon University(CMU), USA and winner of prestigious awards such as Turing, Padma Bhushan, the Honda Prize and Vannevar Bush Award visited SSN in July and delivered a public lecture on Artificial Intelligence.

WE also witnessed the second edition of the Smart India Hackathon 2018 organised by Government of India (MHRD,AICTE, i4C, and Persistent Systems), a unique initiative

of our PM to promote digital literacy in India. SSN's participation in this event is significant and commendable.

Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee, the founder of the World WidevWeb (WWW), and the Turing Award Winner and currently a professor of Computer Science at Oxford University visited our campus on 18th May 2018 and delivered a lecture to students, faculty, alumni and representatives from Industry. This is a part of SSN's endeavour to inspire and enlighten SSNites. Lee talked about the history of Internet and the future of Artificial Intelligence.

I am happy that we have done very well in Sports. S. Arun, our student has grabbed 2 Gold medals in the National Roller Skating Championship, a significant achievement. Many others have done extremely well as well. Our research activities are growing at a steady pace and I am happy to socially meaningful research carried out by our faculty and students has attracted the attention of media.

My best wishes to all of you to grow further in the field of technical education.

SEARCHING FOR MECoffee machines horrify me, apparently. This is a new discovery, triggered by my need to venture into the pantry for a wake-me-up cup at the ungodly hour of 4 a.m. As the espresso splashes into the matte black ceramic mug, the drip-drip sound of the caffeine reminds me of the ruby droplets hitting the shattered windshield after escaping my head wound in a low velocity rivulet. I shake my head violently to clear the memories which popped up, unannounced and unwelcome, and switch off the pantry lights before making my way back to my office with my precious coffee fix. As the door swings open after a retinal scan, I am greeted by the (now regular) sight of Catherine Turnbull swiveling on my extremely expensive ergonomic chair.

Introductions are in order, I suppose. Catherine Turnbull is my twin sister, head of PR at Sincorp, pain-in-the-behind extraordinaire and is currently doubling as my drillmaster, tutor and tormenter. Which explains her presence in my territory and her dominating, yet worried, aura. I, of course, am the much more superior twin in every way possible, the founder and CEO of Sincorp, Caleb Turnbull. To tell you the truth, this is all that I know about myself. Amnesia does that to a person – it erases your identity, like the foamy waves gently sucking the sand away from underneath your toes. You find yourself losing your footing in this world, with no memories, no substance, and no you to speak of. I would walk through this universe naked every day, for isn’t that better than a naked brain?

The only memories I retain from my 33 year existence could probably only fill up a few months. The accident alone is vivid in my now useless mind – the phone call with Michael Lee, the Volvo crashing through a thicket after veering off on a turn, overturning twice for good measure, leaving me suspended upside down in the driver’s seat. The blinding pain seemed to envelop my broken physical being. The popping of broken bones, the tearing of muscles and the silent ripping of flesh is all that I remember from the last 15 years. My early childhood is fuzzy, my formative years a blur – when I woke up at Nanyang University Hospital, I could recognize myself, my family, and photos of my childhood pets. Although, their aged appearances and distressed faces, and the fact that Doggy the dog was gone, were like an electric shock. Everything beyond the age 18 had upped and left my brain leaving a blank void. Neurosurgeons, psychologists, and even shamans (due to my hysterical grandmother) had taken a look, and advised me to rest until the body and mind healed. The shaman had this to say: The chirping of the gold bird will signal the new beginning. Maybe she had gone cuckoo.

Caty, having been my shadow (she claims the opposite) was assigned to help me renegotiate my way through life, and fill in the massive gaps in my memory. I took a sabbatical for a year– and I now have a month left before I have to get back to work. Sincorp stocks are on a downward spiral with sinking investor confidence. A plummeting of employee morale and lack of direction with the interim CEO has led the board of directors to hound my family for information, not to mention the rapid media interest.

CNN ran an article, ‘Microchip Moghul or Houdini? Sincorp Turnbull vanishes after accident’.Ah, the sweet sound of the sinking standards of journalism.

In the dogged pursuit of my memory, Caty has been dragging me to places of note through our lives. Caty kept me breathing

through this - she has been an angel through this whole ordeal. She met the world two minutes before me. A spitfire by nature, and gifted with words, she made friends with the majority of our acquaintances and protected supreme child nerd Caleb from bullies.

She is strong, my sister. But our ‘twindar’ allows me to see the brittleness in her eyes, like she will fragment if she doesn’t cry soon. It breaks my heart. My extreme PTSD episodes, mood swings and the sheer frustration at having lost an entire chunk of my life has alienated most except my parents and Caty, who has stuck to me like chewing gum on a shoe, (s)mothering me with affection and optimism. In her own way, of course.

‘Get a move on, dumbass, the world won’t wait because Caleb Turnbull got a boo-boo!’ she calls, as I settle down on the leather couch.

‘If you were any louder, Eskimos can hear you. My head is splitting, and also, can you get off MY chair?’

‘Lay off the Johnnie Walker, brother mine, he is not going to magically help you remember who your exes are. And no, I am not telling you, have fun figuring it out.’ She smirks at me, clearly enjoying being Satan’s reincarnation. ‘We are going somewhere important,’ and with that, she proceeds to drag me, coffee and all, to the Audi, and I took the driver’s seat.

The last seven months, I have been with Caty to: The Tampines Protestant church, where I was baptized. The candles threw familiar shadows of the cross on the floor. Anglo Chinese Secondary, where I topped the school and grew my first beard. The final school bell immediately stirred my need to leave the campus. Old Kar Fung Tai’s xiaolongbao store in China town, best dumpling smell in town. Nanyang University, where I got my Ph.D. in electronic engineering through an accelerated programme, and had my start up idea for Sincorp incubated. The temporary markets during the lantern festival where we stuffed ourselves with cheap food, their aroma stirring a familiar hunger. The 7-eleven near our laboratory where we picked up Pepsis, my body gravitating to the outside seat on autopilot. Caty sighed wistfully at each place, enjoying the luxury of her memories, marinating in the sepia glory of the past.

Despite the muscle memory, all of these places and stories felt disassociated from me, like I was peering at someone else’s life through a looking glass. Like I didn’t know who I had become now, because I didn’t know who I had been earlier. Without the past to anchor me, I was adrift, lonely and lost. Questions were all I had: How am I going to function normally again? How do I lead the company when I can’t remember why I started it? How am I going to re-enter society when everyone is now a stranger?

By the time I run through my existential crisis again, I pull up at a condominium. I follow her mindlessly, for it is still the crack of dawn and my mental faculties haven’t kicked in. We have never visited an acquaintance yet for the fear of the truth getting out, and the door we’re standing in front of now is that of a residence. Weird.

An unfamiliar face appears at the door, round, Chinese, tyres around the neck, sunken eyes. Clothed in silk pajamas that do nothing to hide his pot belly, he looks like the fat uncle version of Chow Yun Fat – not in a good way either. A cuckoo clock rings at 5 a.m. with a chirping noise. The vague stirring of

something that might be a memory for the first time in a year strikes me, and I stand rooted in place, fervently digging through my blurry mind. Think, Caleb, where have you seen this man before? I try to remain calm, but my subconscious screams: This is it! This is the start of the recovery! My memories, my identity, my nostalgia are finally returning to where they belong!

I search for Caty’s forearm, squeezing my brain. It feels like digging through layers of rock and mud, boring a tunnel through mist and fog to reach what might be a memory. I crouch down,

barely registering my sister’s concern and the man’s offer to call an ambulance when his baritone voice strikes a bell: Michael Lee. Mike Lee, who I fought with before the accident. Mike Lee, who hated my guts right from school. Mike Lee, my sister’s husband. Mike Lee, who one year ago, caused my lack of focus and eventually, my accident, due to his sudden announcement: my sister, Caty, had passed away after a bus hit her.

THE MEADOW OF EYESSometimes I think it will change, my identity, the things I believe in, the thingsthey believe in, but I know it won’t. We are stuck. All of us are stuck. Likedominoes we continue to fall in the same path … in the same place.

I stand at the precipice gazing down the valley, deep inside my chest I feel a flutter as the meadow fills my gaze. The heart which I know is my own feels burdened like a dog’s whimpering,I wish it would stop but the feeling won’t subside. Every step I take makes it more and more like a reflection, a ripple could distort it and I would find myself a different person.

“Go” they say to me. I look to them, they smile as they always do. They tell me they are family, people who raised me, people who love me but to me they are as alien as myself. If I pass through the meadows, they will be the same as me, or rather I will be the same as them. Suddenly they seem repulsive, all of them deformed like they don’t belong under the sky. Reject. Reject. REJECT THEM.

“Go”they say again, a little more assertive as if sensing my hesitation. I bite my lip, giving them one final look, feeling myself drawn to their eyes but I stop myself. I don’t want to see what I will become. What we will all become.

The steps pass underfoot as I descend and I remember the sounds I make and feel the gravel rolling under my bare feet. It reminds me of the time I was a child, playing and singing, the horizon seemed endless back then. Instead of this box. This wretched box that threatens to eat me. I clench my fists and remind myself, there is still time. I can stop but my feet continue to move.

One step. Then another. Until the meadow comes within view. Initially I close my eyes, I do not want to see. There is still hope to stop. To remember. A chance to dream. But slowly the meadow charms me, and I open.

Endless fringes of yellow, red and violet glisten in the light swaying like mermaids in the wind. Then I see the eyes embedded in their centres, twisting out to see me. I scream at the flowers as they dance around me. I feel them watch me, wondering whether I would be the same as all the others that have come before me. I feel them gnaw at me, searching for the uniqueness, for the strength I always thought I had but never have when I need it most. They search for me when I have already lost myself.

The meadows are disappointed. They cease their dance. They cease their judgements. The eyes bulge out from their centre and stare in disgust. I glance at it, the fear rising when I see the veins throbbing out and in near the iris. Their stares are angry, burning and red.

I sob under their weight and beg for their forgiveness. My throat hardens and wails crack my voice, but they do not relent. They continue to burn me with their gaze even as I beg. Soon all they leave me with is guilt and despondence. I lay on the grass, and cry under my palms. I wait for them to kill me. To slowly take me and burrow my bones. To make me feel the pain I know they want me to feel.

Blood drips down my forehead and I am glad because it is finally over. Then I realize it is not my own. The flowers bleed, one by one trails of crimson descend down their macabre eyes until the soil is red. A sound like tearing wounds and rending flesh erupted from their coiling and shaking stems. I realize with a horror that the flowers are in painand from the depths of their blood sprouts a flower.

I am fascinated by its beauty. Awestruck, I look open mouthed as it unfurled its petals into the light. It is pure unlike the abominations around it. “A sunflower” I whisper. I move closer and feel its scent, it is sweet... almost sanguine. My stomach churns and twists, and I clutch my abdomen and puke. I know what is happening.

My body trembles, “No, I don’t want this” I cry out in vain but I know there is no going back. I have already failed. Soon I will be like them, like all of them. Around me, the meadow cries. The eyes in the flowers widen and the blood continues to drip. The eyes of my friends, my parents, my children, their grandchildren. All of them were failures.

“I won’t do it” I shake my head, I won’t be like them butmyeyelids are already stretched wide and my hands reach in, one after the other I pull them out. They roll in my hands, quivering and slimy. I want to feel pain, to cry out that it is a mistake but instead there is nothing. Nothing. The sunflower has no hesitation, it bends readily and accepts my eyes with a slight bend of its petals. Ready to bleed instead of me. Ready to cry with the rest of its brethren.

Suddenly I am happy, a relief washing over me you could say. Someone else will see, I realize. Someone else will save the world. The meadows continue to sob behind me as I walk away. I am lighternow, my gait is chirping. This is freedom, I laugh.

Up on the precipice they wait. I smile at them and they smile back as they always did.I run a hand over my eyes and feel only the slits, just like all of them. I chuckle, before turning my gaze to meadow once again and am greeted by a sight of pure endless black, “the world is a beautiful place” I say with a smile.

The breeze cuts through to my bones,

Sharp, small, prickly needles kissing my pale skin-

-it tingles. And I think I feel something.

People here don’t like the cold,

Though cold comes seldom and fleeting than warmth in this city,

Numbs them, feels like ice running through veins they say,

Yet, through the numbing chill, I think I feel something, once familiar.

I sit on the small rooftop under an inky black sky,

But there are no stars tonight, there haven’t been in a while.

The last time I counted them-

-was during a rainy drive in June, the night I turned 12.

It poured and poured, as we drove along a small, lonely country road,

And all I could see were raindrops hitting against the bright yellow headlights-

-flickering,then fading away, like small fireflies.

Then slowly as the skies stopped weeping,

And all I could hear was the car wheels crunching wet gravel,

I rolled down the windows and put my head out,

A quiet stillness blanketed the air,

-andit smelt like spring, of flowers blooming to beginning,

I looked up and there they were-

-brilliant and stunning in the small sliver of time before dawn would stretch awake from slumber,

Stars.

Countless and spread over for as far as my eyes could see,

Many clusters, some lonely, many small yet bright, some twinkling in yellows and reds,

Overwhelming yet welcoming, like I was always meant to watch them, like I belonged,

And in that moment, a child learnt what it meant to feel invincible,

What it meant for a sense akin to wonder and restless joyto simmer under pale skin,

What it meant to hope, to wish upon those stars, to dream.

And as faint notes of soft piano keys floated from the car radio, carrying a familiar tune with an underlying static,

I put my head in and looked ahead through the windshield, road empty and still long,

And all the stars aligned in front of me, I thought if we drove enough I’d be able to reach them, reach another home,

It was a starlit horizon.

I remember that it was numbingly cold in the wake of rain,

And yet, I was smiling.

I felt something then too.

It has been years since then,

I stopped looking at the sky; it always seemstoo bright,

Squinting eyes only found the sun that shrouded everything else in its fiery power,

They said growing up, you’d see the world –

-for what it truly was; vile and green, icy and blue,

But to me, the world turned outwarm, too warm,

Humid and suffocating, of clashing reds and blazing oranges,

Loud voices, clammy hands, anxious hearts and sweaty skin,

I found my way to the city chasing dreams that I’d wished upon those stars as a naïve child,

Yet I lost my way somehow, lost my way from home in the chaos,

Now, too many wishes are only remembered as syllables left behind on my tongue,

Fate keeps twisting its strings far away from ever reaching my hearts’ desires, constellations never align,

Disappointment and regret linger behind, bitter behind my teeth,

And I’ve learnt to become friends with my sadness- less lonely that way,

Every passing day, the air in this city smells more of burnt hope and charred dreams,

And some days, I can’t breathe.

Yet some days, when I gather the courage at nights,

I climb onto rooftops, to see this city below me,

Flashy sparks in the distance, masking all that’s rotten and dying.

But this night, there are no clouds above;it’s colder that it has been in a few months,

The air feels different, electric,

And a breeze from a far- away sea cuts through to my bones,

Like sharp, prickly needles, like somephantom reminder,

And though my lungs burn a little,

I take in and puff out the cold-whirls of smoke without ashes,

And I think I might remember what feeling somethingwould feel like if I try hard enough.

The wind carelessly whispers in my ear and I look up-

-and there I see it- a lonely star in the middle of the empty pale blue desert above,

It flickers, then burns and then vanishes like it never existed- and I spot a few twinkles in its wake,

And suddenly, what my eyes just witnessed clicks all at once- A Nebula.

Maybe this was my other home calling out to me again-

-telling me that in life you have to break in order to know your strength, to be sad in order to find happiness,

I always did feel special; felt like a bit of stardust was always left behind in my own veins,

And maybe I will have to get lost first, to find my way back home,

The wind carries cark honks in the distance with an underlying sleepy murmur of the city at night,

The neon signs on top of the skyscrapers flicker in the distance, flashing lights of blues and reds, almost twinkling,

It is still numbingly cold, and buried nostalgia pays a visit,

It almost looks like a starlit horizon, I finally smile.

I think I will remember how to feel something again.
