WHAT WE'VE BEEN UP TO

"Hello in Spanish"

We took a day off treatments and gathered the full team to hold our team Christmas party and awards ceremony. We recognised all the hardwork of our star performers over the year, and then we headed out for a glamorous evening of serious food and drink.

New faces

We continued to grow our team and welcome Agnieszka, Amie, Jolene, Enika and Lena to the team, this has been our biggest recruitment drive yet and we are super pleased we have managed to hire such fantastic therapists! Lucky us!

More and more training...

Things got festive...

We worked with two new trainers to continue our wonderful training scheme: Active Health Group in the Northern Quarter, and Valerie Delforge of Delforge + Co, both delivering fantastic training days in their respective fields of expertise. And also our first batch of therapists have now completed our 18 month Bali Health Lounge training programme! Congratulations.

Our feet carry the full weight of our bodies every day whether you only walk 1 mile or 100 miles. Even if you’re wearing shoes your feet are usually the point of contact between you and the tough outside world. For what are actually quite small parts of our body, they deal with a huge level of activity, which is why at the end of the day, we love to put our feet up.

Keeping our feet in good working condition is therefore very important, but what you may not know is that the feet actually have a big impact on the rest of the body as well. Connected to your whole body through your nervous system, bone structure (where your feet are the main point of load transfer externally) and major leg muscles you will find that relaxing your feet will have resulting effects on the rest of your body as well.

Reflexology is an ancient technique based on the principle that there are reflex points on the feet that correspond to various areas of the body. Over the years, research has shown that stimulating these reflex points can deliver many benefits.

Using moderate pressure and pinpointing specific parts of your feet, reflexology will massage away the tension from your feet, and you will find your whole body begins to be relaxed as well. By bringing your body into a state of balance and equilibrium, many people who experience reflexology may relieve tension in the rest of the body as much as, if not more than, a full body massage.

One large review by Kunz and Kunz (2008) summarised 168 research studies from around the world and concluded that reflexology may:

✔ Impact specific organsFor example, fMRI readings demonstrated an increase in blood flow to kidneys and to the intestines.

✔ Improve symptomsIn particular, positive changes were noted in kidney functioning with kidney dialysis patients.

✔ Induce relaxationThrough EEG measurements of alpha and theta waves, resear-chers saw that blood pressure decreased, and anxiety lowered.

✔ Reduce painTwenty-seven studies demonstrated a positive outcome for reduction in pain; e.g., AIDS, chest pain, peripheral neuropathy of diabetes mellitus, kidney stones, and osteoarthritis.

There is no question that reflexology can put a spring in your step. A single 30 minute treatment with a professional therapist can make a difference, so why not give it a go now! In fact, you don’t have to run around in circles looking for a fabulous reflex-ologist, we have some excellent ones here at Bali Health Lounge.

ATherapist’sGuidetoMake-UpRemoval

There is nothing we look forward to than on a Friday evening when we get off work and head out for a drink and nice meal with our friends. We also know that some nights, removing your make-up is the last thing you want to do before you sink into slumber. However, it is important - there’s no way around it if you want good skin health. So we thought we would give you some expert support and advice on how to get it right from Therapist Supervisor at The House of ELEMIS, Hannah Barnes.

What's really so bad about leaving my eye make-up on at night? Anything unnatural on the body for any length of time is going to inhibit the natural function. The eye area is made up of such delicate skin, we must cleanse the skin to remove any impurities and ensure we avoid any premature ageing or unnece-ssary drying of the skin. For the lashes also; you want them to be able to breathe and grow. Using White Flowers Eye & Lip Make-up Remover with Vitamin B5 to help enrich the lashes overnight, is a great way to protect them.

Why doesn't ELEMIS make face wipes? We've all heard the worrying stories about face wipes; some being able to remove limescale, others cleaning stains off windscreens. Who knows if this is the case? But as a therapist, what I do know, is that a lot of my clients who have come to me for advice having used these for years, have extremely sensitive and dehydrated skin.

Make-up wipes typically contain a lot of alcohol and preservatives, to keep the wipe itself moist. This is unnatural and can destroy the skin’s natural microflora and acid mantle - the skin’s environ-ment, natural protective film and pH balance - if these harmful substances come into contact with the skin. This in turn causes the skin to become problematic with dehydration or breakouts.

The closest thing we provide to a facial wipe is our incredible Smart Cleanse Micellar Water. I fell in love with this product when I first used it. It's perfect for those nights, when you come in exhausted from either work or play and can't muster up the energy to get to the sink to do a deep cleanse. Grab your bottle of Smart Cleanse Micellar Water, your packet of cotton wool and simply sweep away the day. Rest easy that you've gone to bed having carried out your skincare.

Oil, lotion, gel, micellar water.... what's the best texture to remove eye make-up? I believe it's personal choice. Just as you have your favourite facial cleansing texture to use, you can find your favourite eye make-up remover too. I personally love a more oil-based one, which feels nourishing and helps the make-up to simply slide off the skin and lashes.

What about waterproof make-up? For waterproof make-up, using an oil based or bi-phase (one you shake to mix the oil and water-like solution together) is the best way to clear away that stubborn mascara and make-up off the eye area.

My eye area always tingles when I cleanse - what am I doing wrong? You're not necessarily doing anything wrong, you just might be using something not specifically designed for the eye area or something your eyes are slightly sensitive to. I would recommend trying a different product, something natural and suitable for sensitive skin. White Flowers Eye & Lip Make-Up Remover contains White Water Lily, White Peony Extract and White Tea, as well as Marine Spring Water, all natural and calm-ing ingredients to ensure you do not experience any heightened sensitivity in the eye area.

What's the best temperature water to use? The happy medium. Nothing too hot or too cold, just lukewarm water is perfect to enhance the effectiveness of your make-up remover.

Single or double cleanse? Join the double cleanse club - two is always better than one! This will ensure make-up is fully removed and that your skin’s microflora is in its best possible environment.

What else do I need to perform the best cleanse? Cotton wool pads are a therapist’s best friend. They're effective but also gentle and soft especially against the eye area to avoid any unnecessary pulling. The fibres also help to catch strands of mascara ensuring a thorough cleanse.

What kind of action should I use to rid my eyes of make-up but protect my lashes? Never, and I repeat, never drag your eye area. Who needs to help gravity? It is important to let the cotton pad simply rest on the eye area to dissolve the make-up and impurities then gently slide downwards on the lashes to help the mascara glide off. At the corner of the eye work in an upwards sliding motion to help the structure of the skin and avoid any encouragement of ageing on the eye.

Do I need to cleanse my eyes again in the morning? If your facial cleanser is suitable to use around the eye area, then when you are doing your facial cleanse in the morning gently work over the eyes too and that should be sufficient. However, if you are unsure or it doesn't state that you can, I would recommend just quickly using your eye make-up remover again in the morning, to refresh and revitalise the area ready for the application of anymore skincare and make-up.

Did you get regular massage before coming to Bali Health Lounge? Not really, I don’t. It feels like a treat. When you’re working and it’s nearby, you take advantage and you make time.

I would recommend it. It works out cheaper!

Are you more of a massage or facial person?I have to do both for my work. I like massage because it’s the whole body. It’s both relaxing and gets rid of problems including aches and pains.

How do you feel the membership has benefited yourself and would you recommend it?

I also had to do some stunt work in the lake in Delamere Forest, involving kicking motorbikes and getting very cold, wet and lots of running about. Your muscles get achy and also the long hours, you really need it.

On top of that, because of my time, I haven’t always been able to see the same therapist so I’ve seen quite a few of the thera-pists and I’ve loved how different everybody is. Everyone is really unique and has their own technique and if you have a good therapist you want that person again and again. Sometimes I feel I really need a massage, but that therapist was not available so I’ll have someone else and I’ll be like they’re my new favourite therapist! Everyone is different but skilled at what they do. There hasn’t been one dud. Genuinely so.

Do you do much training to keep fit? What’s your training regime?I try, but my problem is that I love food, so it’s a bit of a battlebetween ‘shall I have that extra portion’, versus, ‘oh dear I need to fit in those trousers again, I better do a few squats’, so, yes I do try to keep fit.

What would be your favourite dish?I love all kinds of food. I haven’t eaten out loads, but I went to Australasia which was phenomenally good. Trof - hands down best breakfast, I’m going to go there after this. Lavuna, a tapas place in the Northern Quarter which is really excellent, and Evelyn’s I love as well, really nice also.

If you had to give people top health tips, what would they be?Drink lots of water and do some exercise, even if it’s 10 minutes. Move! Stop sitting on your ass and go outside! Put your phone down, turn the TV off, go outside and walk about.

Outside of acting, what sort of things do you like to do, any particular hobbies?I love travelling, as much as I can, with my family. I love going to the cinema, theatre, friends, cooking and going to art galleries. I even went to the Whitworth and the Manchester Art Gallery. I like exploring my environment, which is why I’ve really enjoyed Manchester!

What brings you to Manchester and how have you found it?I’m filming a new series for ITV, for Red Productions called Para-noid and it’s an 8 part new cop show. It’s annoying because I can’t talk about the theme of it, which is what excites me the most about this show. It concerns something that is prevalent in our society at the moment, that has become a massive pro-blem, and I think it needs to be discussed and explored. That’s the big theme. The show takes place in Cheshire, it has three cops and I’m one of them, along with Robert Glenister and Dino Fetscher.

There’s a murder…. And we’re trying to get to the bottom of it and it becomes obvious that it is not just some local person with mental health issues, it seems to have spread and it seems to have become a global issue, much bigger than we thought, like a conspiracy thriller. It has a brilliant cast, including Lesley Sharp. Michael Maloney. So that’s been the last 6 months.

I absolutely love it [Manchester] and I’m going to really miss it. I’ve worked here before and my fella has worked at the Exchange a few times, but I’ve never really got to know it. I’m staying in the Northern Quarter and it is just so cool.

The next section is to do with Game of Thrones, if there’s anything you can’t answer, just say. Have you read the script for next season?Yes! And it promises to be a cracker!

What is the filming like for Game of Thrones comparedto other work you have done?Game of Thrones is like a beast, it’s massive. There is more than one filming unit. Some of it takes place in Belfast; some of it takes place abroad in Europe. My character has been in filmed in Croatia, and Spain, so that’s amazing. They have money to make things look astounding. They are award winning costume designers and award winning creators; it’s a real privilege to be part of a monster like that. And a really lovely team, they’re all really good people who are passionate about what they do.

What is Peter Dinklage like in person? He’s the most charismatic, lovely human being, really pheno-menally talented, charming, funny, really intelligent, and generous. We play ‘Words with Friends’ on our phones together, which is fun.

Do you know if your character dies in the end?I’m not allowed to talk about that! [Of course]

Is your work often very intensive?Really intensive and the reason I know about Bali Health Lounge, is because I bumped into another actor, Anne-Marie Duff. I bumped into her on the train on the way up, and I asked her for any top tips for places to go in Manchester? And she said go to Bali Health Lounge, because they do really good massages. And she knows what it is like filming.

At the beginning we did lots of night shoots, which were reallycold, and wet. Your body when it gets cold, you tense up and I was in such pain from the tension working at night, and so, I’d come to Bali Health Lounge as often as I could, and it was just so helpful.

A New Year, a new you. Whether its chewing your nails, smoking, over-eating, under-exercising or bingeing on Netflix. Here are 5 simple ways to break that bad habit:

5simplestepstobreakingabadhabit

Shine a light on the problem: a habit is exactly that! Something you do without necessarily being aware of it. So the more you admit to yourself, tell your friends about it, tweet about it the more likely you are the be able to make a plan and stop it.

Join forces with somebody: humans like to do things in groups. Know someone else quitting? Join together and discuss it, set targets for each other and push each other on it.

Picture it – have a vision: The clearer the better. See what you would be like without the bad habit. Fitter, stronger, healthier, smarter – what-ever it is let it become a motivation for you. Once in your head, never let it slip out again.

Try a swap-out: Replace the bad habit with a good one. Ditch the morning cigarette and instead go for a walk. Don’t watch a film, read a book. Simple yet effective.

Reward yourself along the way: breaking habits isn’t easy so if you’ve done it for a short period, reward yourself. Didn’t smoke for a week? Great, have a massage on Sunday!
