from the interim director

Gretchen Dietrich, Interim Director

Best wishes for a healthy and happy 2010 from all of us at the UMFA. As the new year begins, we have much to look forward to at the Museum.

In an article last September, New York Times art critic Holland Cotter praised the recent work of many university art museums: “If you want to find innovative models for small-scale shows with big ideas, teaching institutions are still the place to look, particularly university art museums. This is where the spadework research is being done, and where young curators are learning to curate, experimentally, visions of history through objects.” Our goal is to continue to create innovative exhibitions and programs that challenge visitors to make new connections, stretch their imaginations, and feed their love of art and ideas.

In March, we will say goodbye to the special exhibition, Splendid Heritage: Perspectives on American Indian Art, which will travel to the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming and amaze their visitors through Labor Day. We are incredibly grateful to Marva and John Warnock for generously lending this collection to the UMFA and allowing us to share these high-quality artifacts and artworks with our visitors for these many months.

Two new gorgeous exhibitions will soon grace our galleries. The Continuing Allure: Painters of Utah’s Red Rock opens January 14 and will showcase fantastic paintings of Utah desert landscapes by some of the West’s most presti-gious artists, including Maynard Dixon and Edgar Payne. Then, on February 18, Pablo O’Higgins: Works on Paper will go on view. Celebrated in Mexico but little-known in Utah, Pablo O’Higgins was an important Salt Lake City-born artist who worked side-by-side with the great Mexican muralists (includ-ing Diego Rivera) in the early part of the 20th century. The O’Higgins exhibition is a prelude to a Museum-wide celebration of historical and contemporary Mexican art and culture not to be missed this summer.

The UMFA strives to be a relevant, inspiring resource for our community. We welcome ideas about how the Museum can better serve you, and we invite you to join us again and again for a variety of intriguing exhibitions and educational programs.

Your ongoing support makes everything we do possible. Thank you.

The distinctive geography of Utah’s red rock region has challenged and inspired artists for over 160 years. The Continuing Allure brings together the work of many artistic masters of the West, including: Maynard Dixon, William R. Leigh, Conrad Buff, Edgar Payne, Buck Weaver, Maurice Freedman, Ed Mell, Gary Earnest Smith, and Charles Muench. Each of these artists strove to create, in their own way, an authentic American experience; their independent spirits and innovative methods are unmistakable in the landscapes they painted. Such artists traveled to south-ern Utah, often staying for weeks or months to paint the landmasses of the red rock region, capturing and interpret-ing their minimal, geometric features and wide expanses. Many of the paintings on view depict iconic Utah land-marks such as Rainbow Natural Bridge, Zion National Park, Monument Valley, and Bryce National Park.

The UMFA is delighted to present this exhibition, which coincides with the celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the creation of Zion and Bryce National Monuments.

exhibitions

If you have not yet seen this incredible collection of American Indian art, you must come to the Museum before the exhibition closes! Splendid Heritage has dazzled thousands of UMFA visitors of every age for the last year and will soon leave to travel to the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming. The exhibition features a stun-ning collection of 18th and 19th century art and artifacts from the Plains, Plateau, and Northeast regions. Visitors have seen bear claw necklaces and ball-headed war clubs, and imagined the powerful warriors who once used them in battle. Others have gazed admiringly at the Native art-ists’ skilled beadwork and embroidery, evidenced by the elaborately beaded cradles, bags, and moccasins.

Visit Splendid Heritage: Perspectives on American Indian Art before it departs on March 1, and seize the opportunity to gain unique insight into the past, as well as marvel at the amazing creativity and technical ability of American Indian artists.

The right to wear this Sioux shirt had to be earned. The wearer would have been a respected and accomplished warrior who led many battles and acted for the well being of all people in his community. This shirt was created by women with tanned hide, blue and red natural pigments, seed beads and yellow porcupine quills. The ferocious bear paws may indicate that the owner was a “bear dreamer,” a special and spiritually powerful man believed to have the ability to heal wounds.

When examining this object, one might wonder about the human hair used as decoration. Most likely these locks are from members of the wearer’s family and tribe. Might they have served to remind the warrior of the weight of his responsibility to protect his people? Did they serve as added spiritual protection to keep him safe during battle?

PABLO O’HIGGINS: WORKS ON PAPER

Born Paul Higgins in Salt Lake City in 1904, artist Pablo O’Higgins attended East High School, where he took art classes from acclaimed painter LeConte Stewart. The young artist continued his education in San Diego and soon became fascinated with the vibrant Mexican mural movement to the South.

O’Higgins’ contemporaries took notice of his undeniable talent. At the age of 20, legendary muralist Diego Rivera invited him to assist with art projects in Mexico. O’Higgins served as the primary assistant on several of Rivera’s murals before the two parted ways, allowing him to develop his own unique style. Along with Leopoldo Mendez, O’Higgins co-founded the Taller de Grafica Popular in 1937, a group of politically motivated artists dedicated to using graphic arts as a form of social commentary.

Virtually unknown in Utah, O’Higgins’ work as a muralist and graphic artist is widely celebrated in Mexico.

May 6 – September 26, 2010Celebrate the richness of Mexican art and culture at the UMFA this summer. From May to September the Museum will host Las Artes de México, an exhibition exploring Mexican art spanning the ancient work of the Mayans and Aztecs to 20th century paintings by Diego Rivera and other modern masters.

Las Artes de México will be complemented by three additional exhibitions: salt 1 will highlight contemporary Mexico City-based artist Adriana Lara, marking the debut of a series of semi-annual exhibitions of work by emerging international artists; the collaborative exhibition Commu-nity: Eat, Work, Play will feature large-scale murals by local elementary school students; and Pablo O’Higgins: Work on Paper will showcase the artwork of one of the few Anglo artists who participated in the Mexican mural movement.

We invite our members to experience Las Artes de México through special docent- and curator-led tours of all four exhibitions. More information to come. No te lo pierdas! Do not miss it!

David L. Dee named Director EmeritusDavid L. Dee, who served as UMFA Director from 2002 to 2009, has been named Director Emeritus at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts.

Under Mr. Dee’s energetic and ambitious leadership, the UMFA underwent a dramatic transformation, developing into a lively arts center for the campus, the community, and the State of Utah. He instituted a dynamic exhibitions program, which included world-class traveling exhibitions as well as scholarly shows curated from the UMFA’s permanent collection. Mr. Dee forged important commu-nity and public partnerships, which made the UMFA into an invaluable campus and community visual arts resource. He led a revitalized development effort, creating several support groups including the National Leadership Council, the Young Benefactors Council, and the Friends of Utah and Western Art, and oversaw growth of the Museum’s membership by over 300%. Mr. Dee led the Museum’s vibrant acquisitions program, which during his tenure brought more than 2,000 objects into the permanent collection, including important works of Egyptian, European, American, Asian and Pre-Columbian art. He championed the visitor experience, and introduced new programs and resources to improve and enrich the museum experience for all visitors, especially students and families. Under his leadership, the Museum’s focus on outreach to both the campus and the broader community resulted in unprec-edented opportunities for access to the arts in the state through outstanding exhibitions and education programs. Mr. Dee brought positive national and international at-tention to the UMFA for the integrity of his leadership in museum issues relating to Nazi looted art, as well as for the quality of the exhibitions offered at the UMFA during his tenure.

David Dee’s dedication to developing the potential of the UMFA has resulted in an engaging, dynamic Museum that is a wonderful asset for the University and the State of Utah. We are grateful to Mr. Dee for his many years of service and delighted to continue to work together with him to help the UMFA to achieve its ambitious mission of serving the campus and larger community.

It’s the Year of the Tiger and the UMFA is ready to celebrate! Join us for our annual Artful Afternoon event, an entire day devoted to art, creativity, families and fun. Free and open to the public, this year’s Artful Afternoon will recognize the Chinese New Year. Participants will have a blast making their own art objects in children’s workshops, enjoy festive music and performances, embark on a Chinese zodiac animal treasure hunt throughout the Museum, and take part in a variety of other family-friendly activities.

Chinese New Year is the most important of traditional cultural Chinese holidays. Often referred to as the Lunar New Year, this festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first month in the Chinese calendar and lasts until the Lantern Festival on the 15th day. Regional customs within China vary greatly, but often include visits to family, clean-ing the home for good fortune, a special feast of delicacies, and money exchanged in red paper envelopes for luck. The Chinese New Year is an opportunity to sincerely wish peace and happiness to all.

This year’s Artful Afternoon is co-sponsored by the University of Utah Confucius Institute and is inspired by the UMFA’s Influences of the Silk Road exhibition, on view through April 25. This installation includes objects that may have actually traveled the Silk Road or represent the goods and ideas exchanged en route. Check umfa.utah.edu/silk-road for more information.

Don’t miss the biggest family celebration you’ll find this spring: Artful Afternoon!

If you are interested in the art of Utah and the West, please consider joining Friends of Utah and Western Art (FUWA). If modern and contemporary art suits your fancy, the Young Benefactors (YB) is the place to explore further. Don’t let the name fool you – “young” is only a state of mind – this group is all about contemporary art and new ways of seeing. There are no age restrictions!

FUWA and the YBs each have dynamic schedules of annual events, featuring access to private collections, art galleries, artist studios, and special engagements with UMFA curato-rial staff. Highlights from the past year include:

In May, the Young Benefactors spent a sunny afternoon in Park City. Rabbi Joshua Aaronson treated the group to a private tour of artist Jun Kaneko’s celebrated glass installa-tion at the Temple Har Shalom. A range of important artists submitted proposals for the synagogue’s art installation, but it was Kaneko, known for his large-scale ceramic works, who prevailed ultimately. The YBs spent the rest of the afternoon visiting Park City’s many galleries.

In July, the Friends of Utah and Western Art collaborated with the Salt Lake City Film Center and Williams Fine Art to present an outdoor screening of the film Maynard Dixon: Art & Spirit. The event was graciously hosted by Diane and Sam Stewart, who opened their extensive gardens, home and art collection to our guests, and provided a special viewing of their impressive Maynard Dixon collection prior to the film. It was a magical star-lit evening, the kind of nightfall that Dixon must have relished during his extended camping and painting trips to Utah.

Members Make a Difference: The Palmer Family Legacy

Joseph (Joe) Palmer remembers visiting the UMFA for the first time in 1959, when he was a law student at the University of Utah. At that time, the Museum’s collection occupied a small space on the fourth floor of the Park Building on President’s Circle. Shortly thereafter, Joe and his wife Dorothy Ann (D.A.) began visiting the Museum together, and so discovered a place the whole family would come to enjoy for a lifetime.

The Palmer’s connections to the UMFA are multi-faceted and deeply rooted. In the 40 years since their first visit to the Museum, Joe and D.A. have made numerous significant contributions, including a gift of 47 paintings by early Utah artists from their own collection in 1992. Joe currently serves on the UMFA’s National Leadership Council, and D.A. served on the Museum’s Benefit Council for four years. That legacy is now being passed on to other generations of Palmers. Their daughter, Anne Palmer Peterson, is a founding member and current Vice Chair of the UMFA’s Young Benefactors organization.

Today, a third generation of the Palmer family has begun its own relationship with the UMFA, just as Anne and her husband, Peter, have enjoyed introducing their children to the Museum’s collection. “Our son is into graffiti art right now and he loved the Andy Warhol exhibition from Jordan Schnitzer’s collection,” Anne says. “I can’t wait to find out what will interest him in four years when he finishes his college education.”

An appreciation of the visual arts is a way of life for the Palmers, and their enjoyment and support of the Museum spans decades. The Palmer family is a wonderful example of how members make a difference and support the UMFA and its mission in the community.

Donating to the UMFA: Sustaining Momentum in Tough Economic Times The UMFA’s unique collection, exhibitions and programs would not be possible without the enormous generosity of friends like you. We extend our sincere gratitude to all those who made contributions to the Utah Museum of Fine Arts during the last fiscal year. To continuously achieve our objective of presenting exceptional exhibitions and programming, it is imperative that we have the support of our friends – now more than ever.

As Utah’s leading center for excellence in art, culture, visual arts education and university-level scholarship, the Museum’s mission benefits our community in many ways. The UMFA is an organization committed to excellence, with a clear vision and passion for delivering outstanding results. Looking forward, the Museum is committed to prioritizing projects and conserving resources while main-taining a rigorous schedule of exhibitions and programming for the benefit of present and future generations.

Please take a moment to review the information provided on the gift return envelope attached to this edition of the quarterly. We ask for your partnership, and hope you will make a donation today. Thank you!
