Today our country is on the threshold of a giant leap in the world of trade,

commerce and industry. Against this encouraging background, AISCO

is keen to serve as a guiding medium to our community, specially the

younger generation for the purpose of promoting entrepreneurship.

Keeping this motive in mind , I hereby appeal to our members to

contribute informative and inspiring articles related to business, finance

and economy for our Samyukta Saraswat bulletin.

I am happy to mention here, that we have taken initiative in organizing Entrepreneurship

Development seminar in Mumbai and this is our humble beginning to establish Saraswat

Chamber of Commerce in near future.

Also, our Cultural Committee is planning to organize a grand event in the month of July thto celebrate the 80 birthday of renowned Bollywood actor Shri Manoj Kumarji alias

Shree Harikrishna Giri Goswami in Mumbai and I am confident that all AISCO members

across the country will come forward and make this event memorable.

6SAMYUKTA SARASWAT, MARCH, 2017

It is said “Some people dream of success, while others make it happen’’ One such spirited person who has made success happened in all his endeavours is Padmavibhushan Dr. Anil Kakodkar, the distinguished Nuclear Scientist who h o l d s i n n u m e r a b l e s u c c e s s f u l accomplishments to his credit.

Dr. Kakodkar had been the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of India, the Secretary to the Government of India, Director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre at Trombay, Pioneer of Atomic Energy Centre at Pokharan. He has been awarded Padmashri (1998), Padmabhushan (1999), Padmavibhushan (2009) by the Indian Government.

He has also been honoured with the prestigious 'Doctor of Science' award by 18 different Universities of India. This gives a very fractional insight in his achievements. There is a lot to his credit. His untireless, stupendous work is indeed praiseworthy.

There is hardly any aspect of India's atomic energy programme that has not seen a significant impact of Dr. Kakodkar's leadership. He devoted his time on issues, related to energy, education and societal development. He has contributed immensely to the indigenous development of the country.

To felicitate such phenomenal Saraswat luminary, in recognition of his outstanding services, a grand function was held by The Saraswat Deenvatsal Sangh on

th7 January 2017 at Dadar in Mumbai, where he was awarded ‘SARASWAT BHUSHAN

PURASKAR’ on behalf of the Saraswat Community, by the Former Admiral Shri Jayant Nadkarni. The Award was presented in the august presence of the other esteemed guests who presided over the elite function. Appeal to All The Saraswats

It is said “Charity begins at home”

One of our AISCO members Mrs. Vidya Gaitonde has proved this saying. She has made a generous gesture by donating Rs.25,000/- in the memory of her respected & beloved father late Shrirang D. Varerkar who had been active and helpful in various services in our community, all his life. This deed will go a long way, inspiring others, to be helping hand to our community, in accomplishing its various goals.

Donations from the philanthropist can serve

to help several social causes. It is

increasingly becoming beyond middle class

family student to get higher education. At the

same time the medical expenses are sky

rocketing. In such a scenario, to help these

needy and deserv ing

aspirants to fulfil their

dream is a laudable activity,

President of the Samaj, Shri. Shreenath

Deshpande, Treasurer Shri. Balkrishna

Achamani, and Secretary Shri. Shashikant

Gunjikar were present on the dais.

Festivals further remind us about our rich

cultural heritage. These festivities help

people come together in this hectic world.

Makar Sankrati has a special significance,

said Dr, Gunjikar. All our festivals are as per

the lunar calendar and Makar Sankranti is

the only festival which is as per the solar

transition. The Sun enters

the Makar rashi on this day

and hence the name, he

further added.

First the President of the

Samaj welcomed the Chief

Gunjikar, who delivered the

introductory speech. Several

The G.S.B. Scholarship League was

established in 1912 and has been financially

supporting the education of poor and needy

students.

Poverty is terrible in heritance. A child is

defeated even before he/she can begin to

dream. For her/him the counter point to

poverty is the wealth of education.

More than 60% of its revenue comes from

REPEAT DONORS. To get a first hand

information from them, a gettogether of

these donors was organized in Mumbai on nd

Sunday 22 January, 2017. It was a group of

donors who were interested in doing charity.

Most of the old donors had very humble

beginning. They have all now prospered only

because of good education they could get.

The Speakers, were Ms. Ajita Kini,

Ms. Anu Madgavkar, Mr. R. C. Shenoy,

Dr. P. M. Kamat, Mr. G. S. Bhat and

Mr. N. N. Pai. The President of the League,

Shri S.S. Bhat, welcomed the gathering,Sr.

Ganesh Shanbhag, Secretary, introduced

the chief guest.

Chief Guest for the occasion was Mrs. Vijaya

Vivek Kamath, an IT Entrepreneur, who is

herself a big supporter of the League,

expressed her opinion, and said how

education can transform the life of a person.

Shri G. S. Bhat was thanked and honoured

for supporting League’s activities by

providing the infrastructure for the

programme. Shri Jagannath Nayak of

Poornima Restaurant Fame was thanked for

sponsoring del icious refreshments.

Shri. Anand Shanbhag, Proposed a vote of

The G.S.B. Scholarship League is a Trust,

established in 1912, under Bombay public

Trust Act. The League has been disbursing

free scholarship to the needy student of the

GSB Samaj for over 104 years.

The League supports even the average

students, to discourage dropouts for want of

finances. Thus a large number of needy

children are given opportunity to study and

come out of the poverty cycle. Most of these

less privileged students are from coastal

districts of Kerala, Karnataka, Goa and

Maharastra.

This year Mr. Ajit Prabhu, the Creator of

Prabhu Charitable Trust very generously

helped the League, with an understanding

that out of League’s beneficiaries, some

meritorious students should be supported

fully to continue their education. As many of

League’s students are in Karnataka, a MEET

THE DONOR programme was organised in thMangalore on 19 February 2017. About 23

students living in the neighbouring area were

present along with their parents.

GSB Scholarship League’s Chairperson,

Smt. Gita R. Pai, welcomed the gathering,

and said how lucky the League is to get in

touch with the Prabhu Trust and equally

lucky are the beneficiaries to get full

scholarship from Prabhu Trust.

Smt. Shalini P. Rabhu, Mother of Shri. Ajit

Prabhu who was present as the Chief guest,

gave some important advice to the students.

The duty of a student, while a student, and

later the duty towards the organisation that

has helped them in furthering their education

was the point she stressed.

Former student beneficiary of the League,

Dr. Damodar Shenoy, a leading Physician

of Manalore, said that he was a beneficiary

of the League in 1980 and he is grateful to

the League.

Smt. Gita R. Pai, expressed the gratitude

to the Canara High School for the full

cooperation in conducting the meeting

and thanked all the committee members for

being so helpful.

The meeting ended with refreshments for all.

SAMYUKTA SARASWAT, DEC. 2016 1910

SHRI VENKATARAMANA TEMPLE, MULKI

SHRI KALABHAIRAVA MOOLA MUDRA JEERNODDHARA CELEBRATIONS

This incident took place some 250 years ago

in Lord Venkataramana Temple in Tirupati.

One Shri Gujjadi Venkata Nayak, a very

religious person had gone on a pilgrimage to

Tirupati and while having ‘Darshan’ of the

Lord all of a sudden he had “Avesha” and his

body started trembling and he started

making some pronouncements loudly. While

his people became nervous the archaks of

the temple went close to him and asked a few

questions. Shri Nayak answered their

questions and the priests understood what

the matter was and immediately told,

“Venerable Shri Kala Bhairava, you will

kindly go to Shri Venkataramana Temple in

Mulki and serve the Lord there.” They also

told that he should receive the offerings

made by the devotees and help them by

solving their problems and also give suitable

advice. They gifted him “Mudra” (seven

slender Nagar Betta sticks bound in a silver

handle) and blessed.

There is one more dimension to the arrival of

Shri Bala Bhairava at Mulki:

H.H.Shrimat Madhavendra Tirth Swamiji of thShri Kashi Math (7 Swamiji) got an idol of

Shri Bindu Madhava while taking holy bath

in Ganga in Kashi and Shri Swamiji brought it

to Mulki and installed as ‘Utsava Murti’. It is

believed that when the Lord Bindu Madhava

arrived at Mulki, He was followed by Shri

Kala Bhairava who had stayed back in Mulki

in service of the Lord. In Mulki there is no idol

of Shri Kala Bhairava and it is believed that

the Mudra here itself is symbolising Shri Kala

Bhairava.

Shri Gujjadi Venkata Nayak was the first

Darshan Patri of Mulki Temple and the Seva

is still continuing as his family is blessed to

perform this unique ‘Seva’ from generation to

generation. Presently Shri Vasant Nayak thPalimarkar (12 Patri from Shri Gujjadi

Nayak) is rendering the Seva for the last 30

years being blessed with the ‘Mudra’ passed

on to him ceremonially by H.H.Shrimat

Sudhindra Tirth Swamiji in 1987.

As we know in Mulki Temple, the Patri gets

‘Darshan’ (in simple words, it is Shri Kala

Bhairava that is entering invisibly the body

and mind of the Patri, during ‘Darshan’

(a super-natural state) to communicate with

us through the Patri. Especially when we

seek guidance, advice or blessings, during

the ‘darshan’, we are getting a suitable

answer to follow or a solution if we have any

problem that is brought to the notice of

Shri Kala Bhairava. As human beings on

many occasions, we are confused knowing

not the remedial action or what to do and if

we seek guidance from ‘Darshan’ at that time

some reason or relief will be told to us.

Normally with some exceptions, in Mulki it is

taking place during the mornings of

Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. We can

seek the guidance personally or write a letter

to the Manager of the Temple with a small

offering or ‘kaanike’. The Manager will seek

guidance on our behalf and convey by post

all that has been communicated in darshan

in respect of our problems or difficulties. Not

merely problems and difficulties. Some

parents bring their little babies after three

months of their birth and request for a

suitable name for the baby. Then the

‘Darshan Seva’ is not restricted only to the

genera l pub l ic . Even the temple

administration seeks guidance and advice in

SAMYUKTA SARASWAT, MARCH, 2017

Page 13: QUARTERLY BULLETIN, MARCH - 2017 - All India Saraswat ... · The Chairman of Saraswat Bank, Shri Kishore Rangnekar-The senior Managing Director of Saraswat Bank, Shri. Nagesh Pinge

SAMYUKTA SARASWAT, DEC. 2016 1911

the case of knotty problems facing the

administration. The wonder of wonders, in

very rare cases, Shri Kala Bhairava of His

own, summons the people in administration

and gives instructions. In such cases nobody

will take courage to defy and the word is

taken to be the word from the Presiding Deity

of the temple that is Lord Narasimha Himself! During the ‘Darshan’ the ‘Patri’ will be holding

in the right hand ‘Patte’ (a piece of folded skin

of Krishna Mriga) with a golden handle

looking like the sheath of a sword and in the

left hand the ‘Mudra’ consisting of seven

slender ‘Nagara Bettas’ (sticks) with a golden

handle. Both are around 2.1/2 long The

‘Patte’ is normally used as an authority to

bless with a very soft pat on the head of

devotees and Mudra is symbolising

punishment to the ghosts and evil spirits who

sometimes reveal and trouble the innocent

people who are brought to the Temple to get

rid of them. In Mulki Temple, it is this Mudra

(gifted by Tirupati Temple) that has

completed its utility becoming old after using

over the years.

Now a word about Shri Kala Bhairava. Shri

Bhairava is none other than Lord Shiva in His

ferocious form. There are eight forms called

Shri Ashta Bhairavas and Shri Kala is one

among them. He is the guardian deity of Shri

Kashi (Varanasi) and is often believed to be

the ferocious form of the Lord Almighty

Himself. During Aurangazeb’s invasion of

Kashi, he was strongly advised not to

demolish the shrine of Shri Kala Bhairava

and accordingly, it is learnt, never did he go

near it!

As a part of the Jeernoddhara Programme in th Mulki Temple, on 13 March, here was Shri

th,Rama Naama Yajna, on 14 Sarvadbhuta

thShaanti Yajna, 15 Shri Vishnu Gayatri

t

thHavana and on 16 Ashtha Bhairva Yajna.

thOn 17 there was Sarvajanik Anna

Santarpana (mass-feeding) and in the

e v e n i n g a g r a n d S h r i S h r i n i v a s

Kalyanotsava (Wedding of Shri Shrinivas

(other name of Shri Venkataramana) was

performed by a team of 80 persons from

Tirupati Temple itself. Symbolically it served

as a link to Shri Kala Bhairava’s connection

with both Tirupati and Mulki Temples. In the forenoon that day there was a unique

Chakraabja Pooja. Under this a huge

‘Chakra’ (Circle) was drawn with various

colors and lines symbolising the Universe

that is worshipping the Lord of the Universe,

Lord Vishnu in the centre and all other deities

around Him. 16 priests with 16 varieties of

flowers including Tulsi leaves, offered

flowers to the Lord of the Universe chanting

16000 mantras (each priest chanting

different mantra). This pooja offered in the

morning of 17.3.2017 is called ‘Chakraabja

Pooja’ was dedicated to the Lord not only for

the welfare of all the devotees of the Temple

but also everyone in the Universe

During one of the days of the programme,

Shri Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari of

Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala paid a visit and

conveyed personally his good wishes.

H.H.Shrimat Samyameendra Tirth Swamiji

of Shri Kashi Math graced the occasion and

blessed all.

Darshan Seva is a unique service to the

Almighty God and His devotees. It is

available only in a few temples and all must

strive hard to retain and continue it.

Saraswat community has contributed to

every field of life enormously & sports is no

exception. In sports also many Saraswats

figure prominently in various disciplines as

Cricket, Badminton, Table Tenis, Chess,

Hockey, Foot Ball etc. The names of Sunil

Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Di l ip

Vengsarkar, Prakash Padukone, Amol

Muzumdar, Padmakar Shivalkar come to

mind immediately. Let us have a look on the

accomplishments of some of these

prominent sports personalities.

against Windies for the first time. He became

so popular in West Indies that Trinidad singer

Willard Harris wrote a song in Gavaskar’s
