Topic: OPTICAL WIRELESS COMMUNICATION-OVERVIEW

Optical Wireless a.k.a. Free Space Optics (FSO) refers to the transmission of modulated light

beams through the atmosphere to obtain broadband communication.

Due to the development of multistory buildings of residential and commercial complexes, it is

very much essential to have high speed, license free unlimited bandwidth and secured

communication for outdoor & indoor environment.

In 5G communication, it is the compromise of RF and Optical wireless communication

technology for both long range and short range reliable communication.

It requires LED/LASER as Transmitter device and Photo detector such as APD/PIN diode as

Receiver device. It uses free space as medium for transmission. Hence it is known as Optical

wireless communication.

Eye safe Lasers of class 1 family are used for biomedical applications while Class 3 B Lasers are

used for other applications such as defence, Military etc.

Atmospheric variations affect the performance of optical wireless communication

Adverse atmospheric conditions increase Bit Error Rate (BER) of an FSO system

Fog causes maximum attenuation

Water droplets in fog modify light characteristics or completely hinder the passage of light

Attenuation due to fog is known as Mie scattering

Applications of FSO Communications:

Infra-red (IR) communications (remote control applications)

Visible light communications (VLC) for indoor applications

Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) ultraviolet (UV) communications

Inter-satellite communications

Underwater communications

Terrestrial optical communications

Hybrid RF/FSO communications (5G)

Optical quantum communications
