1. INTRODUCTION
JRE Environment (JRE) was retained by Limerick City and County Council to complete Quarter 4, 2018
odour monitoring and sampling at the Gortadroma Landfill site in Ballyhahill, Co. Limerick. The site is a
closed landfill site with an operational bring centre. Monitoring and sampling was completed at on-
site and background sample locations external to the site to assess quarterly odour and
concentrations of contaminants of concern associated with odour compounds. The four (4) pre-
determined monitoring locations (i.e., M1, M2, M7 and M10) are outlined on Drawing Fig.2, attached.
All sampling was completed on October 9th, 2018 under the appropriate Health and Safety
Regulations, including; Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 2005 and the Safety, Health and
Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations, 2007 and associated Regulations. All odour
monitoring and sampling was completed with reference to Schedule C.3 of Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) Waste Licence Ref. W0017-04 (Waste Licence).
2. ODOUR MONITORING
The purpose of the odour monitoring and sampling programme was to assess quarterly air quality at
four (4) monitoring locations to assess the potential for odour impacts at those locations. The odour
assessment locations are outlined in Table A and are shown on Drawing Fig.2 attached.
Table A –Landfill Odour Monitoring Locations

2.1. Scope of Work
The following tasks were completed as part of the scope of work for the odour monitoring and sampling
assessment:
Collect air samples at the 4 pre-determined monitoring locations for assessment of contaminants
of concern outlined in Schedule C.3 of Waste Licence;
Collect samples using Gastec colourmetric detector tubes and/or adsorption tubes for hydrogen
sulphide (H2S), mercaptans (propyl mercaptans), organic acids (acetic acid, isobutyric acid, valeric acid
and propionic acid) and total organic carbon (TOC).
Prepare a quarterly report of results for Limerick City and County Council.

2.2. Odour Chemical Sampling
Concentrations of contaminants of concern were measured at each monitoring location using the
appropriate parameter detector tube and a Gastec Pump (GasGV-100S). The details of the sampling
procedure are outlined in Table B.
Table B: Chemical Sampling Details
Parameter Cat Ref. No. No. of Gastec Gas-GV-100S Pump Strokes for Sample
Limit of Detection (ppm)
hydrogen sulphide GAS4LT 1 0.1 ppm – 4 ppm
mercaptans GAS70L 1 0.1ppm – 8 ppm
acetic acid GAS81L 2 0.125 ppm – 25 ppm
isobutyric acid GAS81L 1 0.325 ppm – 13 ppm
valeric acid GAS81L 1 0.38ppm – 15 ppm
propionic acid GAS81L 1 0.25 ppm – 10 ppm
Concentrations of each parameter were determined colourmetrically using a specific reagent for each
chemical parameter. Each sample was collected by placing the specific detector tube into the sample
pump and pulling a known volume through the tube. The appearance of a discoloration indicated the
presence of the compound of interest.
To correct for barometric pressure the sample results were adjusted using the following formula:
Tube Reading x 1013 (hPa)
Barometric Pressure (hPa)
2.3. Odour Sniff Test
In addition to the chemical sampling completed at each sample location JRE personnel also completed a
sniff test at each location with reference to the EPA Air Guidance Document AG5. The field sheets are
included in Appendix I.

3. ODOUR RESULTS
The results of the Quarter 4, 2018 odour sampling completed at Gortadroma landfill on October 9th
2018, are presented in Table C and D. The odour sniff test results sheets for each sampling location are
provided in Attachment 1.

4. CONCLUSIONS
The results of the chemical sampling at the four odour assessment locations (i.e., M1, M2, M7 and M10)
at the Gortadroma landfill site indicated no detectable compounds of concern outlined in Schedule C.3
of the site Waste Licence. The subjective odour assessment completed with reference to AG5 at the
same monitoring locations during chemical sampling found no odour related to landfill activities at any
of the odour assessment locations.
