Harvard’s season of digesting “Yesterday, we all had

to digest the results of the election.”

These were the words of the Harvard Law School’s Dean of Students to the entire law school’s student body the morning follow-ing the 2016 Presidential Election.

Let it be noted that the word “digest” has a negative connotation and is colloqui-ally used when describing how to receive criticism or bad news.

But this, sadly, is the cur-rent nature of the higher ed-ucation environment where liberal-biased rhetoric and hypocritical behavior is on full display.

“Every four years in the United States, we exercise the democratic right and privilege of participating in the electoral process for the presidency.

That process is always messy and full of tumult, but this year it was marked by unusual divisiveness,

acrimony and hurtful rheto-ric.” This is an excerpt from an email written by Martha Minow—the Dean of Harvard Law School—entitled “Reflecting on this moment.”

One can only wonder if the two emails just referred to would have been written and shared with the future leaders of America had Hillary Clinton won the election. My gut instinct tells me “no.”

College campuses across the country were shocked to see the results of the elec-tion, and the reactions can certainly be perceived as more shocking.

Professors organizing marches, canceling classes, and making exams optional or canceling them outright.

In order to help students cope with the seemingly traumatic result of President Trump’s victory, it was re-ported that the University of Michigan Law School announced a “post-election

    self-care” e v e n t with the o p p o r -tunity to partake in “coloring s h e e t s ” a n d

“Legos.” Ironically, those who typically advocate what are perceived as “mi-nority views” in the general scheme of the United States are those same people who have made many Trump supporters feel unwelcome across universities and col-leges.

Graduate students of Harvard have formed the “Resistance School,” which is a “free four-week practi-cal training program that will sharpen the tools [need-ed to] fight back” against President Trump and his agenda.

While it is not an official course of Harvard Univer-sity or any of its various schools, it is worth not-

ing that some sessions are “taught” or led by Harvard lecturers.

It is commendable that students are taking up an effort which they believe in and they are expressing their beliefs—this is America and free speech is a core tenet of our Constitution.

A chief concern is that these sessions are held in Harvard classrooms (in addition to streaming on-line).

Would there have been extreme media backlash if a similar group (with Har-vard-paid lecturers and the usage of Harvard classroom space), but targeted towards President Barack Obama, had formed a “school” of this kind?

Again, I will go with my intuition and say “yes.”

So, for those students who support President Trump or any of his plans, how do they feel free to express themselves when the higher education sys-

tem and its employers have seemingly come together to alienate others—an action which liberals (and most rational people) have been opposing for years?

It is safe to say that there is not much hope for Trump-supporting students unless action is undertaken by administrators to cre-ate a balanced community, not one that further exac-erbates the bubble which surrounds a multitude of college campuses and their constituents.

It is no coincidence that Sally Yates (the former Deputy Attorney General of the United States and the Acting Attorney General for the first 10 days of President Trump’s presidency) has been selected to serve as the speaker for the Class Day ceremonies at Harvard Law School on May 24, 2017.

Yates was fired by the Trump administration after she instructed the staff from the Department of Justice to

not enforce the executive order on travel and immi-gration.

Her opinions as to why it was an unlawful executive order deserve to be shared and it is every bit her right to do so, but it can be strongly assumed that Trump sup-porters—whether they be students, parents, family and friends—will not feel very welcomed on what is supposed to be a happy culmination to three years of enduring and challeng-ing work.

So much for a safe space.

continued from page 1whether Flynn will be prosecuted to possibly see up to five years in prison.

“He was supposed to get permission and he was supposed to report it, but he didn’t ... there’s no

    evidence of it,” Cummings added.

Chaffetz said the House Oversight Committee was not there to “make the final determination” on Flynn’s case.

“What we’re going to do ... is send a letter to the Department of the Army, the comptroller specifi-

cally, as well as the inspec-tor general there at the Department of Defense.

At some point they need to make that final determination,” Chaffetz added.

Chaffetz said “one of the remedies” in the case against Flynn would be for authorities to recover the

money he was paid.On March 31, Flynn

filed revised financial disclosure forms that in-cluded payments from three Russian companies with ties to the Kremlin prior to joining Trump’s campaign. Flynn, who resigned in February as national security adviser,

was paid $45,000 as a guest speaker by RT, the Russian state-sponsored news outlet regarded by the U.S. government as a propaganda instrument.

He was a l so pa id $22,500 by two compa-nies with close ties to the Kremlin for speeches.

    The speeches occurred

in December 2015, shortly before he formally became a foreign policy adviser to Trump.

The payments were not listed on Flynn’s first fi-nancial disclosure submit-ted to the federal govern-ment after Trump tapped him to be the national security adviser.

Bear takes a seat at NC family’s backyard picnic table

A North Carolina fam-ily said their barking dog alerted them to an unusual sight. A black bear loung-ing at their backyard picnic table.

Christina and Rocky McCormack of Lake Lure, in the western part of the state, said they were in

their home about 7 p.m. Monday when their dog, Wilbur, started backing at a window facing the back yard.

“He started barking like crazy, and I saw this huge bear in the back yard,” Christina McCormack told WSPA-TV.

“It freaked me out,” Mc-Cormack said. “It was wild. I’ve never seen anything

    like it.”The couple said they’ve

spotted a bear, which they named Yogi, going through their trash on previous occasions, but it was do-ing something far more unusual Monday: sitting human-style at their picnic table.

“I thought he was going to knock it over, but no he just climbed right up and

had a seat,” Rocky Mc-Cormack said.

McCormack said he went outside after observ-ing the bear for a time and chased the animal away.

“I seen him, and he seen me about the same time, and he took off,” he said. “He proved to my wife that bears can move pretty quick.”

    “He seemed to be pretty

docile, but in close quarters, there’s no telling what’ll do, so definitely watch out for the kids and wife,” Rocky McCormack said.

The McCormack’s pic-nic table got off relatively easy: Michigan’s Porcu-pine Mountains Wilderness State Park -- aka “The Porkies” -- posted a photo to Facebook in November showing a picnic table

where a black bear left mul-tiple claw marks and two large chunks missing from the attached bench.

“This picnic table had a close encounter with a sizeable bear! Notice the claw marks?

He must have not liked where we put the table!

It is near the Log Camp winter warming shelter,” park officials wrote.

Projected numbers change; Tar River to crest Thursday morning

Rocky Mount, N.C.-The most recent numbers by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Adminis-tration’s (NOAA) predic-tion service indicate that the Tar River should crest at approximately 2 a.m. Thursday morning.

The crest depth and time have changed to 26.8 ft. at the Atlantic Avenue gauge.

    We are currently at

25.26 ft. Major flood stage at this location is at 25 ft.

Floodwaters are still expected to be lower than what was experienced dur-ing Hurricane Matthew.

However, all property owners who were impact-ed by Hurricane Matthew are still asked to monitor the situation closely.

Projected numbers may change again, so residents

in low lying areas are asked to monitor those numbers by accessing the NOAA website link at www.rockymountnc.gov.

The city should be out of moderate flood levels by Friday morning.

As of April 26 at 9 a.m., the city’s Public Works and Water Resources De-partment has announced nearly 20 street closures. Rocky Mount’s Special

Emergency Response Team has performed ap-proximately 16 rescues. Currently, the Civic Cen-ter, located at 500 Davis Rd. in Tarboro, has opened as a shelter.

For a full list of street closures and continued updates, visit www.rocky-mountnc.gov, or visit the city’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/citybeat/.

Milwaukee prosecutors question inmate’s death by dehydration

A Milwaukee County Jail inmate went seven days without water before dying of dehydration, pros-ecutors said at an inquest into the man’s death.

Terrill Thomas was mentally unstable and un-able to ask for help before he was found dead on April 24, 2016, Assis-tant District Attorney Kurt Benkley told jurors on Monday.

The cause of death was ruled “profound dehy-dration” and the medical examiner classified it a homicide.

The jury’s advisory verdict could determine whether jail staff should be criminally charged.

Thomas had been placed in solitary confine-ment after using a mattress to flood his cell in the special needs unit, where he was kept for his bipolar disorder.

Milwaukee County Jail Lt. Jeffrey Andrykowski and corrections officer Decorie Smith both testi-

fied that they were never told the water in Thomas’ new cell was turned off

and that Thomas never asked for water.

    Benkley said in his

opening statement three corrections officers alleg-edly were captured on sur-

veillance video cutting off Thomas’s water supply.

    They never turned it

back on and failed to docu-ment the action or alert supervisors.

Republicans to revive Obamacare repeal with amendment

Republicans have fin-ished amending the Ameri-can Health Care Act as part of a new effort to replace the Affordable Care Act with more support of Free-dom Caucus members.

The deal was brokered by Vice President Mike Pence, centrist Tuesday Group co-chai r Tom MacArthur and hard-right Freedom Caucus head Mark Meadows over the past two weeks.

It is not yet clear if the bill’s changes have convinced enough Free-dom Caucus members and moderate Republicans to vote “yes” on the leg-islation to reach the 216 votes needed to pass in the House, but some members who opposed the previous version, including Reps. Dave Brat, R-Va., and Scott DesJarlais, R-Tenn., suggested they would back the revised bill, Politico reported.

The proposed MacAr-thur Amendment to the AHCA would give states more flexibility to opt out of major provisions in Obamacare while also preserving popular pro-tections like the law’s ban on discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions.

But the latest proposal would allow states to ap-ply for “limited waiv-ers” set to undermine the ACA’s protections for pre-existing conditions.

The waivers al low states to opt out of ACA standards setting mini-mum benefits that health plans must offer.

    The waiver also allows

states to opt out of the community rating require-ment that prevents insurers from charging different prices based on a client’s health status or age.

In short, insurance companies would still be required to cover people older people and those with pre-existing condi-tions, but the companies will have the ability to charge them more through waivers.

    For a state’s waiver re-

quest to be granted, states would have to show that the move would reduce premiums, increase health insurance enrollment in the state, stabilize the mar-ket for health insurance coverage, stabilize premi-ums for individuals with pre-existing conditions or increase the choice of insurance plans.

The amendment in-cludes “default approval” for waivers, which would allow waiver request by

states to be automatically approved pending final ap-proval from the secretary of Health and Human Ser-vices to determine within 60 days if the state has fulfilled its obligations

House Speaker Paul Ryan in late March can-celed the House vote over the GOP’s first effort under President Donald Trump to repeal and replace the ACA after it became clear the effort would not pass. Ryan described the death

of the bill as a “disappoint-ing day.”

In the days leading up to the planned vote in March, Trump courted members of Congress to support the AHCA. All Democrats, some moder-ates and several members of the Freedom Caucus opposed the bill.

Many Freedom Caucus members said they did not support the bill because

it did not do enough to dismantle Obamacare -- describing the legislation as “Obamacare lite.”

After the loss, Trump targeted the Freedom Cau-cus on Twitter.

“The Freedom Caucus will hurt the entire Re-publican agenda if they don’t get on the team, & fast. We must fight them, & Dems, in 2018!” Trump tweeted.

Ten Middle School stu-dents at Sallie B. Howard School for the Arts & Edu-cation, ranging in grades 6-8, along with 6 SBHS adult chaperones, spent two weeks in Cuba visiting 5 provinces – Vern ales, la Habana, Cienfuegos, Trinidad, and Santa Clara - on a once in a lifetime study travel tour.

    Every two years, be-

ginning in 1999, SBHS students compete for the chance to travel to foreign nations to learn and experi-ence the culture and life of people around the globe.

To date we have toured countr ies around the world, including Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Mexico, India, China, Australia, Alaska, France, Cuba, and the Grand Cayman Island

of the Caribbean. Students are selected

based on scholarship evi-denced in a research paper written on the country under study, character, and interpersonal skills.

Although the trade blockade against Cuba has not been lifted and the visible impact can be seen easily in the sparsely filled supermarket shelves, the

people of Cuba are as kind and loving towards Ameri-cans as we have seen any-where in the world.

Our travel itinerary in-cluded a briefing at the US Embassy by American diplomats, tours of historic Cuba in every city we visit-ed, including architectural influence of Spanish colo-nialists, museums, monu-ments to Fidel Castro and

Che Guevarro, gymnastic and international schools, along with classical and popular Cuban music and dance performances.

We learned a little Span-ish to use to greet Cubans and identify ourselves, did a little shopping, and learned a lot about what is good about life in Cuba: education is free, includ-ing college and univer-

sity degrees; health care is free; there are no homeless people and the govern-ment provides basic food commodities for every citizen.

After leaving Cuba, the group spent 3 days in the Grand Cayman Island be-fore returning to the US.

What a great way to end an amazing adventure in historic Cuba!

Marshawn Lynch is coming out of retirement after the Seattle Seahawks agreed to trade the running back to his hometown Oak-land Raiders.

Lynch and the Raiders have an agreement for a two-year contract in place, according to multiple re-ports Wednesday. He is expected to be at Oakland’s training facility later to take a physical.

The draft compensation reportedly will be a swap of late-round picks in 2018.

After weeks of nego-tiations, Oakland agreed to pay Lynch a $3 million base, with a chance to make $2 million more if he gains 1,000 yards, according to NFL Network. The maxi-mum value of the contract is $8.5 million.

    Raiders general man-ager Reggie McKenzie

last week set a deadline by the NFL Draft, which gets underway Thursday in Philadelphia.

Reports surfaced sev-eral weeks ago that “Beast Mode” was seeking rein-statement to the NFL and he and his representatives were in negotiations with the Raiders.

The Seahawks owned Lynch’s rights, so the two sides needed to work out a deal before Lynch could become a member of the Raiders.

Lynch, who turned 31 last Saturday, retired from the NFL and Seahawks af-ter the 2015 season. He has been on the reserve/retired list since May 2016.

The five-time Pro Bowl selection racked up six 1,000-yard seasons in his career and rushed for 9,112 yards and 74 touchdowns in nine seasons with the Buf-falo Bills and Seahawks. He topped 1,200 yards in

four consecutive seasons for Seattle from 2011-14

before being hindered by injuries in 2015.

He played in only seven games and recorded 417

yards and three touchdowns in his last season.

Elton John says he’s “resting well” after battling a rare infection.

The 70-year-old British singer posted an update Tuesday on Twitter after being treated for an unusual and “potentially deadly” infection he contracted in South America.

“Woke up to an ava-lanche of well wishes. Thanks to everyone for reaching out. I’m resting well and looking forward to getting back on tour,” he wrote.

John canceled a series of concerts Monday in the wake of the ordeal.

He had eight Million Dollar Piano shows at Cae-

sar’s Palace in Las Vegas scheduled for late April and early May, in addition to a concert in Bakersfield, Calif.

“I am so fortunate to have the most incredible and loyal fans and apol-ogize for disappointing them,” the star said in a statement through Caesar’s Palace.

John was flying home from South America last week following shows in Brazil and Chile when he became “violently ill.” He was hospitalized upon his return to Britain and dis-charged Saturday.

“Infections of this na-ture are rare and poten-tially deadly,” the statement reads.

    “Thankfully, Elton’s

medical team identified this quickly and treated it successfully.

He is expected to make a full and complete recov-ery.”

    Caitlyn Jenner would ‘seriously’

look at running for public office

Caitlyn Jenner has ex-pressed interest in getting into politics, noting that she would consider running for public office.

The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star made the comments publicly Tuesday in front of a crowd who had gathered at a Y community center in New York City.

Jenner said to the crowd that over the next two years she will decide if working with her foundation or from inside the government is

more effective. She also said she will

not give President Trump a pass despite her Republican party ties, CNN reported.

“My loyalties are not with Donald Trump. I will come after him and come after Republicans if they come after my commu-nity,” the Olympic gold medalist said. “I’ve got a voice and they better lis-ten, OK? I will come after them.”

Jenner also explained how she has been ap-proached for years at speak-ing events about running for office.

    Yegua sin hijos adopta

    un becerro

    huérfano en

    AustraliaBy UPI
