NEW TRANSLOADING TRAINING STANDARDIZES BEST PRACTICES SYSTEMWIDEBy Gail Jones

On September 1-3, Superior Bulk Logistics' Environmental, Health, Safety and Security (EHS&S) team kicked off our company’s first systemwide Transloader Training Class in Belmont (Charlotte), North Carolina. Its goal was to standardize employee transloading and safety procedures among all 24 SBL transloading facilities nationwide. More than 40 participants from across the United States and Mexico attended the training, which began with a group dinner followed by a day and a half of interactive classroom instruction, ending on day three with a hands-on demonstration of SBL's new transloading platform and rail car safety procedures.

“There’s a right way and a wrong way to approach transloading safety, and it’s critical that we all march to the same drummer,” stated Randy Vaughn, Sr. VP - Administration/Risk Management. “Our goal is zero contaminations, zero spills, and most important, zero injuries. If one individual is hurt, that’s too many. It’s our responsibility as a company to provide a safe place to work, as well as Superior safety performance for our customers.”

To develop training that would support consistently safe operating practices across SBL’s coast-to-coast SuperFlo transload network, Regional EHS&S Supervisors Ed DeVinney and Ray Elliott worked six months to develop interactive content, ranging from the anatomy of a rail car to OSHA safety regulations. A two-hour guest presentation from a Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) inspector sparked animated discussion and provided a governmental perspective on safety.

The class also visited our nearby McAdenville bulk transfer site, where Southwest Region Rail Transfer Manager Paul Wheatley conducted a yard exercise on the use of SBL’s improved design and self-contained transloading truck.

In attendance were transloaders from all SuperFlo sites operated by Superior Carriers, as well as the four Superior Carriers Regional Vice Presidents: David Niven, Johnny Williams, Rusty Davis and Larry Bezet. CPR TRAINING CLASSES . . . LITERALLY, A LIFESAVER! By Bob Vallandingham, Insurance & Risk Management Manager

Ten staff members at SBL’s corporate office in Oak Brook, Illinois recently participated in a one-day Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/First Aid recertification training class, conducted by the American Heart Association (AHA).

Instruction for the first half of the day focused on CPR lifesaving techniques, and featured educational videos supplied by the AHA. Our use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) on manikins provided lifelike hands-on training. We also learned the physically demanding but effective 30 compression/2 breath technique.

The second part of the day focused on learning the critical skills needed for responding to an emergency situation, and how to give proper care to the injured or ill. First-response procedures were taught for choking, stroke, shock, bleeding, sprains and broken bones, and severe allergic reactions.

At the end of the day, participants received an American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED course completion card, valid for two years.

Corporate office CPR class (left to right): David Krimpenfort, Fernando Ramirez, Angelique Mercado, Bob Vallandingham, Shari Regnier, Steve Houston, Donna Davis, Gary Watt, Millie Jerosimich, Randy Vaughn

According to Nowak, the training group benefitted hearing from multiple sources over multiple days the message that nothing -- not profits, or even customer satisfaction -- is as important to the company as employee safety. “It was also valuable for them to hear that it’s OK -- in fact, it’s necessary -- to challenge processes, that it’s all part of positive improvement.”

Vaughn complimented Ray and Ed on doing an excellent job in creating SBL’s first comprehensive transload training. “Our objective is to hold another class within the next three to six months, and videotape the instruction, to be posted online as part of SBL’s standard training template.”

According to Watt, in the coming months Lowman and Prentiss will assume more active management roles for railroad relationships and the sharing of best operating practices, as they identify and act on opportunities to expand SBL’s already robust transloading activity.

In recent years, our company’s strategic vision has embraced transloading as a way to create efficiencies for customers while it addresses a continuing driver shortage. “Many people don’t realize that this year alone, we’ve transloaded over 11,000 rail cars,” Nowak commented. “While we began this activity in 1978, and the acquisition of Carry added greatly to our knowledge base in food grade transloading, much of our success is due to the persistent efforts of Gary Watt, who supported adding location after location, and was a key driver in creating formal training. We thank him for his significant contribution, and look forward to much future success in this arena.”

DYNAMIC NEW WELCOME SCREEN GREETS OAK BROOK VISITORSThe entertainment factor for visitors waiting in our Oak Brook, Illinois corporate office reception area just ramped up considerably with the introduction of a 65” display streaming a dynamic new company video.

Capturing “Quality in Motion” with timely news feeds, maps and metrics, the program was developed by VP-Information Services Mike Solverud and Analyst/Programmer Eric Bajalis, at the request of VP-Finance Tim McCann. Featuring automatically updated delivery statistics and randomized blog posts, the 10-minute loop portrays SBL as a company on the move, using a wealth of detailed information on our logistics, culture and people.

One screen shot shows a map of the U.S., with different colored dots differentiating between truck and transload facilities. Another map shows the location of all Carry Transit and Superior Carriers trucks at any given time, along with the number of current active tractors. Other screens flash up-to-the-minute metrics on the number of loads and pounds delivered and railcars transloaded. Yet another display profiles a Stockton, CA employee honored for his community service.

While the Oak Brook corporate office is the only SBL location currently featuring the new welcome screen, soon some regional terminal waiting rooms will have their own, including facilities in Markham, Illinois, High Point, North Carolina, and Pasadena, Texas.

The same IT team under Solverud’s direction recently launched an online logistics tool to help dispatchers quickly locate drivers, trucks, maintenance services, and other data. More to come on this in the December 2015 issue of the Driving Force!

UPERIOR CARRIERS NEWS

SBL has developed a six-minute video honoring Superior Carriers’ 2013 Heil Award win and profiling the culture of the Superior organization. The program will be used on social media, for driver recruitment on Superior’s Facebook page as well as brand awareness on Superior’s LinkedIn page; it also joins a YouTube video library linked to the updated Superior Carriers website to drive search engine optimization (SEO) metrics. Used in face-to-face meetings with customers, it will reinforce our central message, our commitment to safety.

The new program skillfully edits and combines two separate videos: one produced by Heil, incorporating vintage black and white footage to convey their award’s historic meaning, and the other produced by the National Tank Truck Carriers (NTTC) Association and profiling Superior Carriers today. Both were shown at this year's NTTC meeting as an introduction to the presentation of the 2014 Heil Award winner.

The Heil portion of the video recognizes the pre-eminent position held by their annual Outstanding Safety Performance Award, appropriately described as “the tank truck industry’s most prestigious honor . . . their most coveted award . . . the embodiment of safety . . . the pinnacle of performance.” The Superior Carriers portion features interviews with SBL CEO Len Fletcher, Superior Carriers President Brian Nowak, and Sr. VP-Administration/Risk Management Randy Vaughn.

All interviews emphasized that winning the award “went beyond the numbers” to reflect our organization’s true quality culture, to which everyone contributes. Len Fletcher closed the video by congratulating the 2014 winner on the award, advising them to enjoy it, and commenting: “You deserve it!”

KINGSPORT SUPPORTS TENNESSEE’S “HIGHWAY FOR HEROES” ON LOCAL TVKingsport, Tennessee Terminal Manager Jeff Hall and Dispatcher Joshua Trivette believe in honoring veterans -- and they recently went on TV to prove it.

Their forum was an evening news segment about the state’s recently inaugurated “Highway for Heroes” program, which helps veterans and active military personnel who drove commercial vehicles during military service more easily find jobs as commercial truck drivers.

When representatives from a local news station called Superior’s Kingsport terminal soliciting interviews from industry professionals, Hall and Trivette seized on the opportunity to promote a program that benefits both veterans and the bulk transport industry. “This outstanding initiative honors military training, at the same time addressing our industry’s severe shortage of experienced, qualified drivers,” stated Hall. The interviews aired June 17 on a local area evening news.

Under the “Highway for Heroes” program, the road skills test may be waived for qualified military personnel applying for a Tennessee Commercial Drivers License (CDL). Applicants are, however, required to pass the applicable CDL knowledge test. In an effort to reach as many veterans as possible, the program utilizes mobile units that travel to various locations throughout the state, and have the authority to issue non-commercial and commercial driver licenses (CDL) outside of driver services centers.

“Tennesseans are proud of their veterans, and this program will help our veterans find quality jobs in transportation and give a boost to the workforce with dedicated and professional workers,” said Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam.

Superior Bulk Logistics has a longstanding track record of employing and supporting U.S. veterans. We commend Jeff Hall and Joshua Trivette -- vets themselves -- for their military service as well as for their public advocacy of the “Highway for Heroes” program.

KEY INTERNAL PROMOTIONS POSITION SUPERIOR CARRIERS FOR FUTUREFive promotions of Superior Carriers personnel to critical management positions, particularly in the Company’s Southwest region, promise to support anticipated growth and strengthen operations.

In early June, former Southwest Region VP Steve Lowman was appointed Senior VP-Operations for Superior Carriers, a move which relocated Lowman and his family from Houston to Oak Brook, Illinois. “Steve has spent roughly 25 years in the tank truck industry, starting as a driver and progressing in our company with additional terminal and regional responsibilities,” stated Superior Carriers President Brian Nowak. “His current position -- a very important one for our company -- could not be filled until the timing of the appointment made good sense for current and future operational and personnel transitions. Please join me in congratulating Steve on this significant career achievement and well-deserved promotion!”

Veteran industry professional Larry Bezet has been named Superior’s new Southwest Region VP. “Larry has had a unique relationship with our

Company,” Nowak observed. “He has over 20 years experience in the tank truck industry, starting as a mechanic with Matlack, and coming to us as a dispatcher in that 2001 merger. Larry was then promoted several times within Superior Carriers, ultimately managing our largest terminal in Pasadena, Texas. He left the company on good terms to return to extended family in Louisiana, acquired more outstanding industry management experience, then returned ‘home’ to Superior in 2013 when a position opened in our St. Gabriel, Louisiana office. In his new role, Larry will maintain a separate office in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana area. We wish him all the best!”

Three other key promotions, all in Arizona, reflect the growing strategic importance of the southwestern U.S. to Superior’s operations. Longtime Parker, Arizona Terminal Manager Paul Wheatley has been appointed Southwest Region Rail Transfer Manager. “Paul opened the Parker terminal in 1993, coming to Superior Carriers as part of the Matlack acquisition,” commented Lowman. “Reporting to Larry Bezet, Paul will work with our regional transload site managers on facility improvements and efficiency, as well as the development and opening of any new transload sites within the region.”

Taking Wheatley’s place as Terminal Manager in Parker is Steve McCall, who was one of the founding members of Superior’s “24/7” dispatch group. A graduate of Southern Illinois University, McCall has worked on railroad sites

and projects for 22 years, developing rail facilities in St. Louis and Chicago. He is a former fleet maintenance manager for Holland Company, responsible for their North American fleet of trucks. “Steve’s considerable experience makes him an ideal manager for this operationally diverse location,” commented Lowman.

Former Parker terminal driver and loader John McTarsney has been promoted to Terminal Manager in Benson, Arizona. “John has worked in Benson since May 2014 when the terminal opened,” said Lowman. “He’s increased the driver staff and grown the business, and we’re confident he’ll build on that track record of success.”

Nowak feels that all five recent management structure changes will greatly benefit Superior going forward. “Our goal is always to be ‘Superior’ to the competition, and we count on the support of the entire organization to achieve that,” he stated. “I believe we have the right leadership in place to capitalize on opportunities for ever-increasing safety, growth and prosperity.”

“Our goal is always to build teams with a shared vision of where we’re headed and how we’re going to get there,” commented Johnny Williams, Eastern Region VP. “Our spring Regional Planning Meeting accomplished just that by gathering company leaders to stimulate great conversations about all aspects of operations, from overall strategic direction to maintenance issues.”

Held on May 13 in Baltimore, Maryland, the Planning Meeting brought together all regional terminal managers and many corporate executives. The agenda featured Superior Carriers President Brian Nowak on the State of the Company/Objectives, Digital Marketing Representative Chris Halvachs on Salesforce Training, EHS&S Director Tom Gorman and EHS&S Regional Supervisor Nedal Awada on Regional Safety Stats and Performance, Executive VP-Sales Wes Stone on the Company’s Top Customers, Director-Maintenance & Tank Cleaning Ken Shafer, Eastern Region Fleet Manager Brendan Gallagher and Tank Cleaning Analyst Nicholas Miller on Maintenance and Tank Wash Topics, and EHS&S Analyst/Recruiter Mary Mears on Driver Retention and Recruiting.

Guest speaker Tammy Sutton, Lead Placement Coordinator for the North American Trade School in Baltimore, provided perspectives on their driver training program, from which Superior has successfully recruited.

“We covered a lot of ground in one day,” commented Williams, who facilitated the meeting. “Terminal managers appreciated the information sharing, and came away with a deeper understanding of how to build and lead teams committed to excellence.”

EASTERN REGION PLANNING MEETING FOCUSES ON TEAM BUILDING

ATLANTA TERMINAL MOVES TO LARGER, MORE SECURE LOCATION By Rusty Davis, Southeast Region VPHere we grow again!

We’re pleased to announce that as of May 1st, Superior Carriers’ Morrow, Georgia terminal operation has moved into a new and improved home, located a short drive from our previous location, just south of Atlanta between I-75 and US Highway 41.

For many years, our Morrow operation was located inside the Express Container Tank Wash facility, with limited parking for Superior equipment and employee vehicles. With our continuing growth in both driver count and customer base we have outgrown this space.

The new location offers:

• Secure fencing with well-lighted parking areas for employee and company vehicles• 1.5 acres of paved parking inside the secured fencing• Roomy office space for administrative personnel and drivers • Remodeled drivers’ room with big screen TV, showers and updated training computers available 24/7 • Two-bay maintenance facility currently operating one shift, with plans for a second shift • A contract with Express Container to open by year’s end a single bay tank cleaning facility on the property, to clean only Superior tanks

We are excited about our new home in the Atlanta area and look forward to continued growth! Please make a note of our new address: Superior Carriers, 1025 Commerce Road, Morrow, GA 30260. Phone numbers remain the same: 888-823-7727; 770-968-7727 or 7313; FAX 770-968-2831.

Brian Houck

We deeply regret to announce the death of Wilmington, North Carolina driver Brian Houck, due to an unexpected illness. Brian had worked for Superior Carriers since December of 2012.

Wilmington Operations Supervisor Jack Sandlin said: “Brian had a great personality and a huge sense of humor. In his leisure time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and keeping honey bees. He's certainly going to be missed by all who knew him.”

Our sympathy and condolences go out to Brian’s friends and family.

As predictable and pleasing as fall foliage, Superior Carriers has won Logistics Management (LM) magazine’s Quest for Quality Award each autumn for the past six years. Once again this fall, we celebrate Superior’s consistency of service excellence through our receipt of a seventh 2015 Quest for Quality Award in the Bulk Motor Carriers category.

The magazine’s poll asks survey respondents -- users of our industry’s services -- to rate the relative importance of five key attributes that drive decision-making. Respondents are asked which services they used, then required to rate each company on all five customer service/performance attributes: On-time delivery, value, information technology, customer service, and equipment/operations.

Superior placed first in three of the five criteria -- On-time Performance, Value, and Customer Service -- among the five carriers rated in the Bulk Motor Carriers category. Logistics Management magazine received 4,649 total votes. Winning carriers had to receive at least 5% of the votes in each criteria.

For 32 years, LM’s survey and resulting award have represented to our industry the definitive analysis and recognition of what shippers seek in a world-class logistics provider. Their

“Quest for Quality” poll is the most extensive of its type conducted in the transportation and logistics industry.

Survey results are published in Logistics Management magazine, a business-to-business publication serving manufacturing and non-manufacturing industries, with a total online and print circulation of 70,000. A 2015 awards presentation and dinner will be held in San Diego on Wednesday, September 30th, the closing day of the annual meeting of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals.

We’re proud to be a winner of a 2015 “Quest for Quality” award, and congratulate everyone whose daily efforts to achieve excellence contributed to this prestigious honor!

SUPERIOR DONATES TRAINING TANKSuperior Carriers has donated a fully operational stainless steel liquid tank trailer to the North American Trade Schools (NATS) in Baltimore, Maryland for their permanent use in student training.

On August 3rd, Tammy Sutton, Lead Placement Coordinator for NATS, along with NATS CDL Instructor Ozzie Lewis, effected the tank transfer from Superior’s Baltimore Terminal to the NATS facility. According to Baltimore Terminal Manager Ken Bristow, Superior has worked closely with NATS for more than a year and successfully recruited two drivers from their pool of graduates, with several interested applicants in the 2015 graduating class.

“Tammy [Sutton] brought a class here for an open house in December 2014, and in March I was asked to join their advisory board,” Bristow commented. “Then Tammy and an associate were guests of the Eastern Region Planning Meeting held on April 16th of this year. They told Superior about their training requirements, and provided background on their school. After explaining to Tammy Superior’s need for drivers with tanker experience, I asked if she was interested in incorporating a liquid tanker in NATS training. She responded with an enthusiastic yes.”

After receiving approval from Superior Carriers President Brian Nowak, SBL Director - Maintenance & Tank Cleaning Ken Shafer then located a liquid trailer at the Auburn, Maine terminal, and made arrangements to load and deliver it to Baltimore.

A recent letter from Richard D. Ripley, NATS’ Director of Education, thanked Superior for providing students with hands-on experience in their CDL program: “Your company has contributed to the North American Trade Schools in the hiring of our students, and this great donation will help our students better prepare for their future in tankers. Thank you for your dedication and generosity to our school.”

CARRY TRANSIT NEWS

Carry Transit continues to develop and invest in their leading edge Visiship Transportation Management System, and is expanding the technology to include Trans Load Management functionality.

The Visiship Transportation Management System is a web-based, hosted technology platform that enables superior Supply Chain Execution (SCE) across all modes of transportation. When integrated with a shipper’s ERP system, Visiship provides visibility of all shipment cycle activities across the shippers’ enterprise, while automating many processes and providing critical information for operations management, reporting and informed decision making.

With the development and addition of Trans Load Management Functionality to the Visiship TMS technology suite, Carry Transit continues to respond to the needs of the market by addressing a growing supply chain distribution mode that is helping shippers achieve greater market penetration, effectively serve customers, and expand their business.

Trans Load combines elements of Visitrack, a comprehensive rail transportation management system, with the Visiship TMS and inventory management functions. The result is the development of a robust Trans Load Management capability that provides real time access to comprehensive information essential to the trans load shipment cycle, including inventory management.

Trans loading has continued to grow as service disruptions, caused by a variety of factors, have necessitated the shortening of the supply chain in order to position inventory closer to the end customers’ use point, and to enhance shipper and carrier responsiveness to customer needs. But as trans loading has grown, so have its complexities, due to an increase in the number and variety of shippers and in the special requirements for products and market segments served. Equal to the growing number of shippers are the number of inventory management systems that each trans load site has to work with, significantly complicating administrative processes. Visiship solves this problem by integrating Trans Load Management directly with a shipper’s ERP or WMS system, eliminating the need for customer-specific terminals at trans load sites and duplicate data entry.

Shippers can integrate directly with Visiship for electronic tendering of loads from their ERP system. Alternatively, they can tender loads via email, and when supported with EDI capability, information is easily transmitted. Trans Load operators in turn can electronically interface with shippers and carriers serving their facilities. This capability will facilitate the processing of shipment and transaction-related activities and information, expediting and automating trans load processes.

Accessed through secure portals, Trans Load functionality provides operators, shippers and carriers with secure access to information. Shippers can track inbound replenishment inventory, and have access to onsite activity of truck shipments loaded from rail cars. Operators and carriers can enter shipment-specific information to facilitate inventory management, provide shipment status and expedite freight invoicing. Document uploading and management capabilities make shipment documents such as BOL’s, weight tickets, COA’s and POD’s available with a few clicks.

We are very excited to add this leading edge functionality to the Visiship suite of Transportation Management technology, and provide clients with additional opportunity to increase productivity, grow their business and have access to information essential to business management and decision making.

BL SCOOP“Please join me in congratulating Casa Eaton on her new position as Operation Supervisor at the High Point, North Carolina terminal!” commented Mac Stanley, Terminal Manager. “Casa came to our Company in 1994 as a billing clerk, then transferred to the High Point facility as a terminal clerk. She quickly moved into a dispatcher role due to her attention to detail and ‘whatever-it-takes’ attitude. Her extensive experience will be a huge help to her as she assumes her new duties.”

After 19 years of dedicated service to our Company, driver Alan Dougherty has retired from the Lakeland, Florida terminal. On June 15, his well-wishers sent him out in style with a “Superior” decorated cake and a barbecue lunch. “We greatly appreciate his loyalty to our company,” said Terminal Manager Jimmy Anderson. “We’ll all miss him very much!” Alan and his wife plan to relocate to Indiana to be closer to family.

Pedricktown, New Jersey Terminal Manager Scott Hourigan welcomes new dispatcher Daniel Gallo to his terminal team. “Daniel comes to Superior Carriers with over ten years of dispatch and load planning experience. We welcome Daniel and his wife Donna to the Superior family!”

On June 10, Regional EHS&S Supervisor Ray Elliott heard the great news: his son Andrew Elliott had been drafted by the Baltimore Orioles! In 2014 and 2015, Andrew won the Horizon League’s Relief Pitcher of the Year award at Wright State University. Since then, Andrew had spoken to scouts at other ball clubs, but never expected to be taken by the Orioles. He was very happy to report to their rookie camp in Sarasota, Florida in June.

“Please join me in welcoming Kai Orel to Carry Transit, as the new Terminal Manager in Bridgeview, Illinois,” writes Larry Earnhart, Carry’s Midwest Region Operations Manager. “Kai graduated in 1996 from the Illinois Institute of Technology with a degree in Business Administration. He brings to Carry 14 years of terminal management experience with a Class I railroad, and another four years of experience in logistics and terminal oversight. Kai enjoys cooking, golfing, the game of baseball, and spending time with his family at his home in Lockport, Illinois.”

“Thanks to all who helped put together our fantastic Markham rodeo in June,” writes Jim Carl, who wears many hats as the Terminal Manager for the Kankakee/Markham, Illinois and Westville, Indiana operations. “Our weather was spectacular, we had many special guests, and our catering staff served a delicious lunch -- along with buckets of ice cream -- to more

than 100 people.” Competition was keen on both the driving course and written test. Savannah, Georgia terminal driver Roy Abney captured first place honors; second place went to Dave Mickelson from the Kankakee terminal; and third place to I/C Brian Rogers from Markham. Retired I/C Larry Hanks was honored with a plaque recognizing his 24 years of service and 2,000,000 miles of safe driving. “Kids literally had a blast with their water guns provided in special gift bags, and they participated in a drawing for a trail bike,” Carl stated. “A great time was had by all!”

Recently, Pasadena dispatcher Brian Alaniz -- who is active in customer relations -- was commended by Clariant’s Supply Chain Specialist, Nate Nguyen: “Brian has done a fantastic job! He’s quick to respond to emails and phone calls, and willing to go the extra mile to get things done and keep everyone happy. I used to manage a customer service team at my old company. And yes; Brian is the kind of employee you want to keep.” We agree with you 100%, Nate!Continued on page 10

SBL Scoop... Continued from page 9

It’s always gratifying when the driving public calls in to commend one of our employees. On August 11, Steve Wilson, Driver Trainer from Superior’s Karns City, Pennsylvania terminal, was commended for safe driving on a curving stretch of I-65 in Kentucky. Wilson was doing the speed limit and braking cautiously, which this driver appreciated because the cars behind her were tailgating. She thought his safety precautions “may have prevented a terrible accident.” We applaud Steve for putting safety first!

Kudos to Karns City, Pennsylvania driver Richard Burnsville, whose professionalism made a positive impression on personnel at a consignee of Calumet Penreco. “It’s not often that a customer takes the time to acknowledge a driver in a positive way,” writes Mary Hahn, Purchasing & Transportation Manager at Calumet. “We appreciate that!”

“We would like to inform everyone of the retirement of Markham, Illinois driver Joe Dunlap,” writes Terminal Manager Jim Carl. “Joe has spent the last 24 years giving his best to deliver liquid commodities for some of Superiors’ best customers. Joe started his career at Superior hauling resin for Shell Chemical and has spent the last several years dedicated to a Stepan lane. Joe gave us all he had everyday, and went out of his way to see that customers got what they needed in a safe manner.” Joe will be selling his home in the Midwest and moving to Oklahoma. We thank him for his many years of exemplary service, and wish him all the best in retirement.

Angela Gonzales joined the Superior Carriers team in February 2015 as a clerk at the Benson, Arizona terminal. We’re pleased to announce that in August she accepted a position there as Dispatch Trainee. When she's not working hard at the terminal, Angela loves spending time with her family, being on Facebook, and playing softball. Congratulations, Angela, on your new position!

WRIGHT DELIVERS TOP PERFORMANCE AT DRIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS By Phil Henderson, Terminal Manager, Greer, South Carolina

From August 11th through August 15th, it was my privilege to attend the 2015 American Trucking Associations (ATA) National Truck Driving Championships in St. Louis, Missouri with Greer Independent Contractor Ray Wright and his wife Donna. Ray did an outstanding job representing Superior at the toughest, most competitive safety truck driving event in the country.

Superior Carriers President Brian Nowak commented: “Most participants were only able to obtain a score in two or three of the six driving skill tests, but Ray managed to score in four out of six categories. While some huge companies had over 40 drivers paid to train and compete, we not only held our own, but were Superior to much of the competition in character and spirit.”

Domiciled at the Greer terminal since 2006, Ray has represented Superior Carriers at the South Carolina Trucking Association Truck Driving Championships in 2013, 2014, and 2015, finishing first in his class this past April. This earned him a spot at this year’s national ATA championships, where 415 drivers representing all 50 states competed in nine different classes. In the flat bed class, 48 drivers competed against Ray, and were judged by a written test, driving test, and pre-trip inspection. The written test covers all aspects of the trucking industry including hazmat, hours of service, and numerous facts and figures. The driving test consists of six challenges, must be completed in nine minutes, and is literally measured in inches to determine the scores. During the pre-trip inspection, the driver examines equipment in search of deliberately placed defects to find as many as possible in eight minutes.

“Please join me in congratulating Ray on a successful showing over a five-day grueling test of endurance and patience,” said Nowak. “Well done!”

AFETY ZONESetting the Standard -- While Protecting Yourself and Others By Tom Gorman, Director, EHS&SAs a professional driver, you are responsible for your safety and the safety of others while driving on the highway. You also work in a highly regulated industry, and occupy a very visible position with the public at large. With that in mind, we encourage you to drive as if your family were in the car or truck ahead of you, or at either side of your vehicle.

Watching your speed, keeping a safe following distance, avoiding frequent lane changes and getting your rest are important factors in creating a safe environment. Conducting thorough pre- and post-trip inspections helps to keep you, your equipment, and those driving around you safe from harm. Erratic driving, close calls, and accidents are not only dangerous; they elicit a negative kind of attention from the public. An experienced truck driver once remarked: "The best situation is when no other motorists have cause to remember you on the road." When you're operating safely and doing a Superior job, no news is good news!

We appreciate the terrific job you do and the sacrifices you make every day. Safety is not only an integral part of our business. Safety defines us as a company. Work safe, drive safe, BE SAFE!

MILLION ACCIDENT-FREE MILES PROGRAM UPDATEThe Axis, Alabama terminal continues its climb to the two million mile mark, with 1,451,100 accident-free miles. Thanks for all you do to stay safe! The Memphis, Tennessee terminal had its first preventable accident this year, ending their consecutive mile streak at 1,376,415. Thanks to all Memphis drivers for their excellent safe driving over the first six months of 2015! The newest member of our Million Mile club is the Wilmington, North Carolina terminal, which reached this safe driving benchmark in July. Those drivers received a certificate and a $50 gift card, and the terminal a certificate for display.

Our great High Point, North Carolina drivers surpassed 750,000 accident-free miles for the first time this year. They received a Superior Carriers hat and certificate to commemorate the achievement. The Sulphur, Louisiana terminal drove past the 500,000 mile mark in July, also for the first time this year, for which drivers received a Safe Driving Award patch and a certificate. Both High Point and Sulphur terminals were honored with a certificate of achievement.

Five more terminals passed the 250,000 mile mark without a preventable accident: Markham, Illinois; Springfield, Massachusetts; Savannah, Georgia; and Greer and N. Charleston, South Carolina. Markham and Savannah reached this milestone for the second time this year. Thanks to all our dedicated, professional drivers for the safe work you perform every day!

“Green” Switch to Extended Oil Drain IntervalBetter fuel economy, less oil and filter waste, and reduced labor hours are some of the “green” outcomes expected from SBL’s recent switch to Mobil Delvac Elite 10W-30 engine oil. The decision to move to an extended drain cycle for both Superior Carriers and Carry Transit was the result of a team analysis by our Company, Exxon Mobil, Donaldson Filters, Mack, Cummins, and PACCAR. PM personnel and drivers should be aware that the Elite 10W-30 is a “backward compatible oil” that can be mixed with remaining 15W-40. This new, advanced formulation oil works in all SBL power units.

Inside Look at Mack’s Cab DesignIn the last “From the Tool Box,” I wrote that Mack Truck had invited me and High Point, North Carolina Driver Trainer Walt Brady to attend a June Mack Cab Clinic in Allentown, Pennsylvania to provide input on future truck interiors. While I can’t share the details of this exciting, hands-on experience, suffice to say that we’ve listened to your requests for new features, and passed them along. We’re all about safe and happy drivers . . . so stay tuned!
