SACD NEW RELEASES / HYBRID

Francesco Petrini: Premiere concerto for harp Op.25 Daniel Steibelt: Grand concerto for harp ARTISTS: Masumi Nagasawa, harp. Kölner Akademie, Michael Alexander Willens, conductor. Who would have thought that more than 30 harp concertos were written during ‘The age of Enlightenment and Romanticism’? The most well known harp concertos today from that period are those by Mozart (for flute and harp) and Boieldieu. People tend to think that these were the only concertos written for the harp at the time. On the contrary, these were many, as well as a vast amount of repertoire for the harp, (all of which are now in libraries), waiting to be discovered. Masumi Nagasawa is one of the few harpists to perform on the modern Grand Harp, the singleaction harp (18th-19th century historical harp), the Irish harp and the kugo or Japanese ancient harp. Toshiba EMI Japan, Etcetera and Channel Classics have released CDs by her.

BIS SACD 1883 Label Code 419 Price Code P BEETHOVEN – COMPLETE WORKS FOR SOLO PIANO: VOLUME 12: VARIATIONS (II) Ludwig van Beethoven: Neun Variationen über einen Marsch von Ernst Christoph Dressler, WoO 63; Sechs Variationen über ein Schweizer Lied, WoO 64; Vierundzwanzig Variationen über Venni Amore, WoO 65; Dreizehn Variationen über Es war einmal ein alter Mann, WoO 66; Zwölf Variationen über das Menuett à la Vigano, WoO 68; Neun Variationen über Quant’ è più bello, WoO 69; Sechs Variationen über Nel cor più non mi sento, WoO 70 ARTISTS: Ronald Brautigam, fortepiano. In March 1783, the readers of Cramer’s Magazin der Musik could read about a certain ‘Louis van Betthoven’, a ‘boy … of most promising talent’, whose first published work was being advertised as 'nine variations for the pianoforte, written by him on a march, engraved at Mannheim.’ The piece in question was the Dressler Variations, WoO 63, and it marked not only the beginning of an illustrious career, but also the start of Ludwig van Beethoven's lifelong involvement with variation form, culminating almost forty years later in the monumental Diabelli Variations for solo piano, and – in another field – the third movement of his Ninth symphony. In comparison, WoO 63 and the other works included here are certainly less heavy-weight, even if the so-called Venni Amore Variations, WoO 65, has a duration of more than 20 minutes, and in spite of its early date (1790/91) points forward to a much later period in Beethoven's œuvre. The final set of variations on the disc, the Six variations on Nel cor più non mi sento, WoO 70 were composed in 1795, around the same time as the three piano sonatas Op.2. In this series, Ronald Brautigam has previously recorded early sonatas and sonatinas from the same period as the present works, a disc described by the reviewer on German web site Klassik Heute as ‘providing a touching illustration of those times when the great Beethoven was simply young Ludwig’ through playing which is ‘simultaneously committed to the utmost purity of style and imbued with an immense musical exuberance’. As on the previous instalment in the series, Brautigam has chosen to perform these early variations on a fortepiano after a Walter & Sohn instrument from c.1805.

BIS SACD 1997 Label Code 419 Price Code P LONDON CALLING George Frideric Handel: Extracts from Amadigi di Gaula, HWV 11 (Sinfonia [Act 1] – Aria: T’amai – Aria: Vado, corro – Aria: O rendetemi – Sinfonia [Act 3] – Aria: Sento la gioia) Extracts from Hercules, HWV 60 (Sinfonia [Act 3] – Recitativo accompagnato: Where shall I fly?) From Theodora, HWV 68 Air: As with rosy steps Arcangelo Corelli: Concerto grosso in D major, Op.6 No.4 Francesco Maria Veracini: Sonata in A major for violin and continuo, Op.2 No.9 Francesco Geminiani: Concerto grosso in D minor, No.12 (‘La Follia’) ARITSTS: Tuva Semmingsen, mezzo-soprano. Barokksolistene, leader: Bjarte Eike As the hub of a fledgling British Empire, London around 1710 was burgeoning with new wealth and offered the perfect setting for operatic entrepreneurs eager to spread the latest Italian fashions. It was thus a city of opportunity for Handel, fresh from spending five years in Italy, but also for many other touring musicians including Arcangelo Corelli, Francesco Maria Veracini and Francesco Geminiani. This recording unveils a portrait of the chameleon Handel, emerging in the panache of his early Italian-styled Amadigi, reaching maturity in the ‘English operatic’ Hercules and arriving finally in the perennial melodic grace of Theodora, his penultimate oratorio. Extracts from these works, in which the young Norwegian mezzo-soprano Tuva Semmingsen displays both vocal agility and a wide-ranging emotional palette, are interspersed with instrumental works by Handel’s Italian contemporaries. Corelli’s Concerto grosso in D major, from the celebrated Opus 6, and Geminiani’s ‘La Follia’ in D minor – incidentally a reworking of Corelli’s famous violin sonata – both illustrate Italian instrumental music at its most sumptuous, in colourful and dynamic performances by the Norwegian period band Barokksolistene. For further variety, the leader and artistic director of the ensemble, Bjarte Eike, also performs a chamber work by Veracini, who visited London regularly during some three decades in the early 18th century. The Sonata in A major was published in England in 1744, and it would be quite tempting to interpret the use in it of a Scottish tune, Tweed’s side, as merely a clever marketing device to charm a local audience, were it not that the tune, and the composition itself, was so attractive.

ACCENT 24257 Label Code 086 Price Code F SYMPHONIES BY THE BACH SONS Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach: Symphony in E flat major HW I/10 for two horns, two oboes, strings & b.c. - Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach: Symphony in E minor Wq 177-H 652 for strings & b.c. Johann Christian Bach: Symphony in E flat major op.6/3-W C9 for two horns, two oboes, strings & b.c. Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach: Symphony in D minor HW I/3 for strings & b.c. Johann Christian Bach: Symphony in G minor op.6/6-W C12 for two horns, two oboes, strings & b.c. ARTISTS: Ewald Demeyere / Bach Concentus With this recording Bach Concentus under Ewald Demeyere wishes to devote itself to the subject, currently under-exposed, of the beginnings of the symphony as a genre. Whenever the term "early Classical symphony" is used one mostly thinks of the early compositions of Haydn and Mozart. Yet both before and during the time of their musical activity, a whole series of composers were busily engaged in writing symphonies. The Mannheim School had been established by Johann Stamitz (1717-1757), at the Viennese court Georg Christoph Wagenseil (1815-1777) and Florian Leopold Gassmann (1729-1774), among others, received plaudits for their symphonies and, at the same time, Pieter van Maldere (1729-1768) in the Netherlands earned his spurs as a composer of symphonies.

675754039745

This recording aims to highlight the significant role the sons of the Thomas Cantor, Johann Sebastian Bach, also played in the development of the symphony. This music does not deserve to be viewed merely as a precursor of the "genuine" Classical symphony or as an intermediate phase between two superior stylistic periods, but should be judged on its own merits, and these are mostly very high.

ACCENT 24268 2 CD SET Label Code 086 Price Code F CANZONI VILLANESCHE: NEAPOLITAN LOVE SONGS OF THE 16TH CENTURY Works by Willaert, Lassus, et al. ARTISTS: Beasley/Kiehr/Cabré Festa/Ensemble Daedalus Beginning in the early decades of the sixteenth century, Naples made a distinct contribution to the Italian musical scene with a genre peculiarly its own, the Canzoni Villanesche alla Napoletana. These often amusing pieces are not to be thought of as "popular" music in any sense, but rather as music for a refined public, much of it poking fun at the madrigal and its mystique. However, the intervention of the villanella repertory of highly accomplished composers such as Willaert and Lassus, both of whom are represented in this well-chosen selection of pieces, had the effect of bringing the genre closer in some of its details to the language of the late sixteenth-century madrigal.

Label Code 001 Price Code P SCHUBERT – OPERATIC OVERTURES Franz Schubert: Der Teufel als Hydraulicus (1811/12); Der Spiegelritter (1811/12); Des Teufels Lustschloss (1814, second version); Der vierjährige Posten (1815); Claudine von Villa Bella (1815); Die Freunde von Salamanka (1815); Die Zwillingsbrüder (1819); Alfonso und Estrella (1821); Die Verschworenen / Der häusliche Krieg (1823); Fierabras (1823) ARTISTS: Haydn Sinfonietta Wien, Manfred Huss, conductor. Although Franz Schubert’s Lieder, his symphonies and his chamber music are staples in concert halls and on disc, his music for the stage is much less well known. He began composing operas in 1811, at the tender age of 13, and it is probable that the tuition he received from Antonio Salieri around that time fuelled his interest for the stage even further. Although he had one of his first public successes with the Singspiel Die Zwillingsbrüder, Schubert later encountered difficulties in getting his operas staged: most of them would remain unperformed for a long time after his death in 1828, and are still rarities in the repertoire. With a few exceptions, the overtures to these works have suffered a similar neglect, even though they display an astonishing abundance of musical ideas, and possess a stirring dramatic character beyond anything found in for instance the symphonic works. The striking originality of the music becomes even more obvious when performed on period instruments, as on the present recording with Manfred Huss and the fifty musicians in the Haydn Sinfonietta Wien, whose previous discs on BIS of works by Haydn has been warmly received by critics worldwide. Their recordings of Schubert's overtures were made in 1997 for release on the Koch/Schwann label, a disc which after its deletion from the catalogue has become a collectors’ item, with rare new copies being offered for as much as USD 200. For the present re-release the original recording has been remastered by BIS Records.

BIS CD 1886 Label Code 001 Price Code P KALEVI AHO – CHAMBER WORKS Kalevi Aho (b.1949): Quintet for Clarinet and String Quartet (1998); Trio for Clarinet, Viola and Piano (2006); Sonata for Two Accordions (1984/89) ARTISTS: Osmo Vänskä, clarinet; Sarah Kwak & Gina DiBello, violins; Thomas Turner, viola; Anthony Ross, cello; Susan Billmeyer, piano; Veli Kujala & Susanne Kujala accordions. Renowned for his rich production in the field of orchestral music, Kalevi Aho is also a prolific composer for chamber forces. Here three works spanning two decades have been combined, with the Sonata for two accordions originating in 1984 as a Sonata for solo accordion described by the composer in his own liner notes as ‘comparable in aspiration with Liszt’s most virtuosic piano works’. Completed five years later, the duo version exploits to the utmost the unique possibilities offered by the accordion and remains highly virtuosic. It was premièred as late as 2002 by Veli and Susanne Kujala, who also perform it on this recording. At the other end of the time-line described by this disc, the Trio for clarinet, viola and piano was commissioned to be the set chamber music work of the 2006 Tampere Viola Competition. While the single-movement Trio reserves a prominent role for the viola, Aho describes it as ‘a quite short and flamboyant work in which each instrument has something important to say’. Opening the disc is the large-scale Clarinet Quintet, composed in 1998 as one in a series of quintets involving woodwind instruments, begun in 1973 with an Oboe Quintet and completed by the 2006 Wind Quintet. Again a musician from the first performance appears on this disc: better known as a conductor, Osmo Vänskä began his career as principal clarinet in the Helsinki Philharmonic. By 1998 he had already made his mark as a conductor, with seminal recordings of Sibelius’ symphonies with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra. But Vänskä was also – and has remained – a great champion of Kalevi Aho’s music, and was easily persuaded to take on the important clarinet part for the première of the quintet. For this return to the work, Vänskä has gathered members of the Minnesota Orchestra, where he is currently music director.

The Ottomans embarked on an intensive campaign of besiegement maintained with immense technical efforts and great expenditure of human resources. The besieged defended themselves as best they could with all possible means, but after several weeks, not only hunger and illness but also fear and terror were rife in the city. It soon became clear that Vienna would not be able to withstand the siege through its own efforts and help was therefore summoned. It took two months for the alliance of numerous Christian armies with a total military manpower of almost 60 000 to end the siege at the Battle of Kahlenberg in which the Ottoman forces were routed and driven away. The composer Johann Kaspar Kerll personally experienced the siege at the gates of Vienna and, overwhelmed by his impressions, wrote a mass which was intended to provide "comfort in the lamentations on the siege of Vienna"; the Missa In fletu solatium obsidiensis Viennensis.

675754039714

Johann Kaspar Kerll is by no means unknown among seventeenth-century composers. Modern dictionaries of music all mention him as an out-standing composer of organ works that are available in various new editions and can regularly be heard in concerts. It will therefore probably come as a surprise to most informed music-lovers that Kerll's contemporaries esteemed him above all for his sacred vocal compositions and chamber mu sic. The intention of the present recording is to acquaint a broader audience with this unknown side of Johann Kaspar Kerll.

COVIELLO 21202 2 CD SET FOR THE PRICE OF ONE Label Code194 Price Code F HENRY PURCELL: ABDELAZER The Double Dealer - Abdelazer - The Gordian Knot Unty’d - Distress’d Innocence- Bonduca ARTISTS: Linard Bardill, German narration/ John Holloway, English Narration/Mathias Kleiböhmer, conductor/ Orchestre Le Phénix. The melody of the “Rondeau” from Abdelazer is one of the best-known tunes today and everyone can sing it. If we try to find out, who is the composer, we come across the name of Benjamin Britten whose symphonic variations from A young person’s guide to the orchestra are world-famous. It is, however, not Britten’s composition: it is Henry Purcell’s. During the last five years of his short life Henry Purcell wrote more than 43 so-called ‘stage musics’ for theatre. In his final year in 1695, he composed the music for the tragedy Abdelazer by Aphra Behn. The tragedy Abdelazer tells the story about a slave who becomes king after many intrigues and murders. Unfortunately, only the first part of Purcell’s flamboyant suite has survived. For their recording Mathias Kleiböhmer and his orchestra Le Phénix join forces with Linard Bardill (German narration) and John Holloway (English narration) and tell the story of Abdelazer, using the surviving pieces of the suite as well as a selection of Purcell’s stage music that was written shortly before Abdelazer.

They were sold to a private collector. Thomas Fritzsche received the composition fperform them. On this recoding Thomas Fritzsche and Shalev Ad-El played them in alternation with Abel's Prussian Sonatas - coming full circle after two and a half centuries. Johann Christians Bach's sonatas are typical of the keyboard sonatas accompanied by flute, violin or as here viola da gamba that became popular during the last quarter of the 18th centuries. In this four sonatas Johann proved to be a modern, innovative composer. On the one hand the two-movement formal structure he has used was ideally suited to the musical taste prevalent in London; on the other hand Bach chose an instrument which was increasingly falling out of fashion

A year later founded Fritsch and Gehlhaar the Feedback Studio Verlag publishing the first Germcomposers. Studio and publishing house were located in the Belgian Quarter in Cologne in a rear building, where Fritsch had set up in 1967 under the umbrella of a private studio. Both understood the studio and publishing house is not a commercial than a company, but rather as an artists' cooperative and a center for alternative music. The publisher took up to 300 works by 20 composers. At the beginning there is the duet for viola (1961), the Fritsch as his Opus 1 defined. The work grew out of an experimental handling of the viola and established the first of a series of compositions that would integrate Fritsch tape recordings into live performances, and sometimes supplemented by improvisation. Madrigal Triste (1963) also provides an example of Fritsch's interest in translation from text to music: letters and syllables of the eponymous poem by Charles Baudelaire are transformed into oboe tones. An accompanying audiotape changed the sound of the oboe with the means of the electronic studio and leaves "a kind of imaginary space oboe sound" emerge. The complex work Partita (1966) demonstrates Fritsch's description of live-elekronischer music as "a new kind of chamber music, the instruments along with traditional musical instruments includes various electronic components transformation." As a "transition elements" Fritsch uses special contact microphones, filters, regulators, and a delay-and-feedback system that tape recorders, amplifiers and mixer is generated. All five compositions on this CD address the connection between musician and instrument in the new age of electronics. This creates Fritsch previously unheard sounds and timbres.

Goeser, oboe - Heike Storm, accordion - Eberhard Maldfeld, double bass) Track 2: Dieter Wernecke (Speaker), Bernhard Haas (organ) Track 3: Stephen Grant (baritone), Camilla Hoitenga (alto flute ), Jonny Axelsson (drums) The CD 11 of the feedback-CD series dedicated to Fritsch's musical triptych that time (1992), which consists of the three compositions, the bittersweet book, Then and Trio from the end composed. This bittersweet book, a composition for the rare combination oboe, accordion and bass, refers in the title of the history of the bitter-sweet little book of the Apocalypse and forwards in a strange world of sound and harmonics of high tones in the motif of a death. At that time, based on the eponymous play by Samuel Beckett, which revolves around the memories of different stages of life and identity of a dying self. As provided by Beckett, the speaker's voice is heard in three versions (for example in the stereo image on the left - center - right). Fritsch composition combines Beckett's text syllable by syllable with certain pitches that are synchronized from one organ to play with words. The music is subordinate to the text below, the Fritsch of actors, such as talking Dieter Wernecke, left. The trio is composed of excerpts from the end of that time. The melody of the work for bass, alto flute and drums is broadly consistent with the quiet tone of voice. If in that time, the music, the text subordinates modest, it is a trio from the end to an equal partner - "in an effort," said Fritsch, "to feel with words and sounds, the quiet peace of the end."

With his performance of the music of De Machy, Paolo Pandolfo is enriching the recorded survey of solo viola da gamba music with a very special contribution; such as he has done before with his recordings of music by Sainte-Colombe, Abel or of his most warmly-received recording, the Bach Cello Suites in their transcription for viola da gamba. The publication of the Pièces de Violle (Paris, 1685), the first of the literature for the viola da gamba in France, unleashed a veritable polemic or querelle with Jean Rousseau concerning the "true manner of playing the viola", which had been described by De Machy with a wealth of details in the prologue to his work and in which radiates an enormous sense of aplomb and certainty. His advocacy for the viola da gamba as a harmonic (or chordal) as well as a melodic instrument was to go on to have a significant influence on later composers such as Marin Marais and Antoine Forqueray. With his recording and also in his accompanying essay, Paolo Pandolfo places special emphasis on one facet of these pieces which tends to pass unnoticed: their danceable character. Countless sources from the time tell us about the vigorousness of the interest in the dance in the 17th century, a passion practiced in an almost obsessive way not only by the court nobility but by the rural aristocracy and the wealthier bourgeoisie as well. This all makes the vision of a viola da gamba accompanying such dances a very suggestive one indeed.

I Turchini, Antonio Florio, direction. Giovanni Sollima has been successfully pursuing a twin career as cellist and as a composer and it is in both capacities that the Palermo-born musician appears now on a new recording from Glossa. Sollima teams up with I Turchini of Antonio Florio in a captivating demonstration of virtuoso concerto treasures from Leonardo Leo, Giuseppe de Majo and Nicola Fiorenza. Giovanni Sollima's empathy with the spirit of the 18th century concerto allows him not only to provide - and to play masterfully - elegantly appropriate cadenzas for the works of his forebears but to compose a modern work comfortable and at ease with its Neapolitan past (and entitled "Fecit Neap. 17..", mirroring the frequently found ascription found on manuscripts in the 18th century).

675754039752

With a solo cellist in Giovanni Sollima, who is equally at home in the musical worlds of Patti Smith, Claudio Abbado and Philip Glass, and a director in Antonio Florio, who is equipped with his own masterful overview of Neapolitan music from the Baroque onwards, this new disc was recorded in a venue, the old S Anna dei Lombardi monastery complex in the heart of Naples, which serves to point up how powerful a forging ground for cello music Naples was from the end of the 17th century and into the 18th, as well as in our own time.

Francisco Javier Mañalich, Tenor & Viola Da Gamba. Manuel De Grange, Lute, Guitar & Direction. Ronald Martin Alonso, Viol. Hannelore Devaere, Harp. The collections of airs published in France by Ballard between 1608 and 1643 contain 17 airs on Italian words, of which six are in the polyphonic collections, six are for voice with lute tablature and five for voice with guitar tablature. Taking account of variants and different versions, polyphonic or monodic, of the same pieces, we are left with ten texts – a rather insignificant group amid a repertoire of over 2,000 French airs. The present recording manages to include all these ten texts, thereby presenting almost all the Italian airs published by French composers during Louis XIII’s reign. The musicians of Il Festino have interspersed these airs with a number of instrumental pieces and songs to Spanish texts of the same period. All the Italian airs are by three of the foremost French composers of the time, each of whom moved in court and salon circles.

Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, Paavo Järvi, conductor. The label PAN and the HR (Hessischer Rundfunk) present the first issue of their recently started collaboration with a new recording of Shostakovich's piano concertos op. 35 & op. 102. Dmitri Shostakovich wrote only two piano concertos. He was himself an accomplished concert pianist and had created his First Piano Concerto with a parodist slant to show off his own virtuoso abilities. The work marks the conclusion of Shostakovich the composer's intensive study phase of piano music. The Second Concerto, written for his son Maximilian, is unusually happy and optimistic in nature. The slow movement is arguably one of the most beautiful pieces ever written for the piano, wonderfully romantic but never sentimental, while the outer two movements bubble over with spirited effervescence and optimism. Alexander Toradze is universally recognized as a masterful virtuoso in the grand Romantic tradition. With his unorthodox interpretations, deeply poetic lyricism, and intense emotional excitement, Alexander Toradze lays claim to his own strong place in the lineage of the great Russian pianists. Paavo Järvi has been Chief Conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (hr-Sinfonieorchester) since 2006, enriching it through his work with new and exciting aspects. The Estonian is one of the most successful conductors on the international music scene.

Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic, John-Edward Kelly & Micha Hamel, conductors. Alexandre Glazounov’s Saxophone Concerto is easily the most famous work ever written for saxophone. It has also become the most frequently performed work of Glazounov, as, sadly, his large œuvre has fallen into neglect. Glazounov was neither a modernist nor a particularly fashionable composer, but rather a devout representative of Russian music in the tradition of Rimsky-Korsakov and – in the noblest sense – an exacting craftsman. Once considered the greatest musical talent of Russia, his remarkable musical abilities were legendary even during his lifetime (there are multiple references to these in Shosta-kovich’ autobiographical “Testament”). The Saxophone Concerto, too, is by no means a “progressive” work, but rather a delightful presentation of an instrument Glazounov obviously loved. He did as much as any other composer to help the saxophone become accepted as a concert instrument, and he has given the saxophone its only truly romantic concerto. Nicola LeFanu (b. 1947) is the daughter of the composer Elizabeth Maconchy, a granddaughter of the legendary Irish Victorian writer Sheridan LeFanu and a former student of the very exceptional Egon Wellesz. Following studies at Oxford, the Royal College of Music, Harvard and Brandeis, she lived in London for many years, where she taught at King’s College together with her husband, Australian composer David Lumsdaine. From 1994–2008 she was Professor of Composition and Head of the Music Department and at the University of York. Her extensive œuvre of more some 100 compositions – including 7 operas – has been performed around the world, yet she continues to see composition as more of an inner passion than a profession. Krzysztof Meyer (b. 1943) is widely respected for his great musical skills and his vast musical knowledge, yet his music remains for the most part an “insider tip”. Despite continuous international performances and a long list of devout supporters – whether renowned instrumentalists or famous composers such as his close friend, the late Witold Lutosławski – his works have been somewhat overshadowed by those of the more renowned representatives of the Polish avant-garde. Undeterred, he has striven tirelessly to further develop his own deeply expressive musical language.

The most distinguished Czech violinist of the 18th century? The first name that springs to mind is that of Frantisek Benda. His illustrious career led him to the post of concert master of the court orchestra of Frederick II, King of Prussia. He was highly praised by his contemporaries and according to the period sources, when delivering slow movements he often moved the audience to tears. Benda’s influence throughout Germany was comparable with the enormous authority the celebrated Giuseppe Tartini enjoyed in Italy. As a composer, he was einspired by Vivaldi’s concertos, which he was thoroughly familiar with. Yet Benda’s concertos are singular works in their own right, abounding in invention, naturally flowing and extremely forcible melody. At the beginning of the 21st century, Ivan Zenaty is amonviolinists a serious candidate for the title Benda would have been awarded in the 18th century. This, after all, is documented by his collaboration with superlative orchestras and conductors (Baudo, Gergiev, Belohlavek, MP SUPRAPHON FL 40 7 Label Code 332 Price Code C SOLO FOR THE KING / JANA SEMERÁDOVÁ J. ARTISTS: Jana Semerádová - Baroque transvC Just as France had its Louis XIV, so Germany had Frederick II (1712-1786), whose passionate love of music (to the great annoyance of his father, who wanted him to be a strong monarch and military commander) allowed for the blossoming of many splendid flowers in the Galant style. The desire to learn how to play the flute was awakened in Frederick by his meeting the virtuoso J. J. CD1: W. A. Mozart – Symphony No. 38 in D major, "Prague"; Overtures to the operas Le nozze di Figaro and La clemenza di Titto; L. van Beethoven – Symphony No. 6 in F major, "Pastoral", Op. 68 CD2: F. Schubert – Symphony No. 8 in B minor, "Unfinished"; G. Mahler – Symphony No. 4 in G major ARTISTS: Karel Šejna and the Czech Philharmonic. Maria Tauberová – soprano (Mahler). Rarely mentioned in the same breath as his illustrious colleagues Talich, Kubelík and Ančerl, Karel Šejna (1896-1982) was perennially second-in-command, yet despite failing to receive the credit he deserves he too played a crucial role in shaping the history of the Czech Philharmonic. Initially solo double-bass of the orchestra, he began conducting upon Václav Talich's request and in 1939 was officially named its second conductor. And he also remained deputy after the departure of Talich, who was replaced by Rafael Kubelík, as well as after Kubelík’s emigration, when Karel Ančerl was appointed (originally against the orchestra members' will) to the vacant post of chief conductor. Consequently, still playing "second fiddle", Šejna went on to conduct dozens of concerts and make numerous recordings, which today rank among the finest in the SUPRAPHON archives. Period critics branded him a flexible and vivid conductor who always required an understanding of the style and consistently worked with detail. In 1972, Šejna rounded off a half-century of work for the Czech Philharmonic with Mahler’s Symphony No. 4. Šejna’s sensitively remastered recordings from 1950-1962, from the bracing Mozart played "with a light hand" to Mahler's fourth, are now released by SUPRAPHON for the first time on CD.

Newly discovered treasures from the

SUPRAPHON archives, for the first time on CD!

ARTISTS: Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, conductor: Zdeněk Chalabala Owing in large part to their exotic inspiration, Rimsky-Korsakov's Sheherazade and Aram Khachaturian’s Gayane are among the most beautiful and most frequently performed Russian and Soviet works of music. The creator of Sheherazade, who as a young navy officer travelled the oceans, was enchanted by the Oriental collection of stories and folk tales The One Thousand and One Nights. Yet Rimsky-Korsakov’s colourful instrumentation also gave lustre to another work, Mussorgsky's fantasia Night on Bald Mountain, with its dramatic depiction of a wild Sabbath of witches. Khachaturian’s ballet suite Gayane includes Armenian folk melodies, which were the composer's most powerful inspiration and undoubtedly helped to earn the piece global popularity (the celebrated Sabre Dance is one of the most frequently played compositions worldwide). The recordings of all three works were made between 1953 and 1955, the paramount period of Zdeněk Chalabala, the chief conductor of Prague's National Theatre Opera at the time. The great imagination with which he tells stories, combined with the inimitable timbre of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, makes these recordings truly remarkable. Yet another treasure appearing on CD for the first time.

Pianist Bill Carrothers makes music out of it – music that is especially introspective: “Family Life”, the new Pirouet Records CD by the 48 year old American pianist. It is a solo CD that expands the listener’s beautiful journey of imagination through the celebration of Bill Carrothers’ wife, children, dog, and the secluded life in a sparsely settled area of Michigan not far from two of the Great Lakes. The internationally celebrated pianist’s last album, the Pirouet double CD recorded live in the legendary New York jazz club the Village Vanguard, made people sit up and take notice. In his newest Pirouet CD, Carrothers captivates with 15 tracks of subtle beauty and unexpected moods. The old English folk song “Scarborough Fair” foreshadows the subtle symbolic-laden direction, and the schmaltzy sea-side romance of “Harbor Lights” – in this case referring to a lighthouse near the family home that Carrothers and his wife especially liked – has a very different sound than those versions by Bing Crosby and Elvis. The music of this introspective jazz virtuoso has many shades within the lights and shadows. As music, “Family Life” gently draws the listener out and into the middle of nature – and soon the listener wishes to be a part of the whole thing. Stress? You’ve got to be joking! This is magical music suffused with inner peace.
