usA AtV sALEs CRAsH WHILE sBs sALEs BOOMSales of all types of ATV in the USA fell to around 300,000 units in 2011, down from a peak of over one million units just fi ve years ago. On the up-side, Side-by-Side sales have quadrupled to over 200,000 units over the same period and manufacturers are falling over themselves to either stay ahead or get into the booming SBS sector.

Here in the UK we are still faced with the ludicrous situation of having no credibly audited sales fi gures for either ATV or SBS machines. Some manufacturers are members of the AEA and they simply putt in a claimed sales fi gure each month. It’s as accurate as that. The only independently audited fi gures are for newly registered road legal quads, which should be available through the DVLA, but they don’t publish them...

Whatever the real fi gures, the UK SBS side is certainly on the up, with utility sales claimed to be at an all-time high and on the racing side a 2012 British Championship series running under the ACU, mostly at NORA-MX events.

On the surface the SBS racing class appears to be expensive, with a prepped racing SBS costing up to £25,000, but some hybrid quads can cost that, and how much is a top sidecar-cross rig? And whilst there may be a few familiar faces signed up for the 2012 series, we need to look at the positive aspects of attracting ‘cross-over’ racers, fans and sponsors from comparatively expensive motor sports. If we do our best to welcome them, it can only work for the future good of both quad and motorcycle sport. For information on the 2012 SBS series go to www.nora-mx.org.uk

For information on sales fi gures of quads, double it, halve it, do what you like with it. It’s a professional industry. Apparently...

Onwards then - Happy New Year!

ARCTIC CAT BUYS BACK SUZUKI SHARES Arctic Cat has announced that it has bought back all company shares owned by Suzuki Motor Corporation, which has been a major shareholder for nearly 25 years. The move increases non-Suzuki shareholders’ ownership of outstanding common shares by about 33 per cent.

Arctic Cat spent $79.3 million to buy back all of Suzuki’s approximately 6.1 million shares of Arctic Cat Class B common stock. The stock buyback reduces Arctic Cat’s outstanding shares from 18.4 million

SAME AGAIN FOR ROCKETMEN If it ain’t broke don’t fix it - that is the Rocketman Suzuki team’s strategy for 2012. The squad, one of the UK’s most successful in 2011 with the British X-Country title and a podium at Pont de Vaux, has an unchanged rider line-up for the new year, with Carl Bunce out to defend his X-Country championship and tackle the MX series, and Ant Barrett and Laurence Stopps competing in the British XC and the NORA MX series.

At Pont de Vaux, where the Rocketmen took third overall in 2011, the team returns with the same line up of Bunce, Chris Cooper and Ricky Tordoff, plus a second “Masters” team of Barrett, Chris Murphy and Geoff Sharp, and a third team of “youngsters” with Stopps, and two others who have yet

to be selected. Technical support is

coming once again from American firm Walsh Racecraft, Dirtwarz Graphics will keep the bikes resplendent, plus support from Barrett’s of Aspley, The Brake House, Castle Hotel, and Tim Wedgwood.

“The main aim is to retain the XC title and see if we can win Pont de Vaux after the being the top British team for the last two years,” said team principal Jason Smith. “So, we’d welcome more support if there’s any out there.”

BATTLE LINES DRAWN ON TYPE APPROVAL A key vote by a European Parliament committee has set the scene for a battle royal over the toughest technical proposals yet to threaten European motorcyclists says the BMF.

The European Parliament’s Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) committee voted through stringent proposals

for the regulation, approval and market surveillance of motorcycles, three wheelers and quadricycles.

The IMCO committee vote is an early stage of the legislative process and is in effect a recommendation to the European Parliament. If the European Parliament take the same view, it would mean that from 2014, measures to prevent power-train modifications* must be devised and applied by manufacturers and also that owners must present their motorcycles for inspection after carrying out ‘substantial’ modifications. It would also mean that as from 2016, tighter emission laws would apply and all machines would have to be fitted with ABS, not just those over 125cc as previously tabled.

*Note: Power-train modifications will mean manufacturers employing measures to prevent subsequent modifications by the user that may have adverse effects on safety or the environment. Additionally IMCO added a new article 18a which requires that users seek inspection and approval ‘by the competent authorities’ in case of substantial power-train modifications.

A detailed report on the IMCO vote will soon be available on the FEMA website: www.fema-online.eu

Mark Watson burst onto the quad racing scene in 2008. At the tender age of 22 years he, together with his brother John, was already a British MX Sidecar Champion. He

showed a particularly promising ability in his fi rst year of QX with the County Durham-based Anderson Suzuki team and, despite a season of mixed fortunes, he was viewed

as a strong hope for future championship glory.

the rookie yearMark kicked off 2008 with a fourth overall at the British

Quadcross championship opener at Whiteway Barton in Devon. His transition from sidecar to quad racing was almost seamless, until the fi fth round at his home track, Dean Moor, in July. He landed off his machine and hit his head so hard that he smashed the front of his crash helmet and was air lifted to hospital. For many, that would have put

paid to their racing season, yet such was the tenacity of the young racer that he was back out on track just one week later at Blaxhall Pits. When quizzed on his injuries, he responded with; “Bit bruised and sore, but I’m okay thanks,” before going on to take two incredible fi fth place fi nishes. Next up was a trip to Dunns in Scotland for round seven, where, having qualifi ed second, his day’s racing was blighted by suspension failure.

The fi nal round of the

ACU British Quadcross Championship took place at Culham Park in Oxfordshire and it was here that Watson dazzled. Having overcome injury and mechanical bad luck, he went out to set the fastest time in qualifying and won the fi rst race in style. A broken steering stem put paid to a repeat win in the second race, but Mark was truly on the quad racing map.

That fi rst year saw the #85 plate fi nish tenth in the overall championship stakes.

the season that followedAgain riding with the Anderson Suzuki team, 2009 started solidly for Watson, with a seventh overall at the first British Quadcross championship round at Mildenhall and a fourth at Duns in Scotland. The next three rounds, however, saw a number of DNFs, pushing Watson out of the championship top ten.

Heading back home to Dean Moor, it was clear that Watson was on a mission, and out to prove himself. And boy, did he do just that. Treating the rest of the field to a view of his rear wheels, Watson won the first race by a margin of six seconds and took a second in race two, to take his first overall win of his British QX Championship racing career. Round six proved to be the highlight of Watson’s 2009 race season, as the following rounds at Leuchars, Blaxhall Circuit and Culham Moto Parc saw him taking some top ten positions, but not enough to keep him in the overall championship top ten.

Mark closed the 2009 British Quadcross Championship in 11th overall.

the future’s orangeHaving served his apprenticeship well with Paul Anderson’s Suzuki team, 2010 saw a change of machinery for Watson with a switch as a privateer to KTM. This year also signalled a change in the format of the British Quadcross Championship, with a seven round series of three 20-minute plus two-lap motos.

the European Quadcross Championship was held in the UK in April 2010 at the spectacular hillside circuit at Langrish, Hampshire. Four British riders, namely, Paul Winrow, Jason Macbeth, Paul Holmes and Mark Watson, lined up alongside Europe’s finest quad racers. With a large partisan crowd cheering them on, the Brits fought hard and whilst Winrow claimed an overall podium position, it was Watson who piled the pressure on the leading French riders and emerged as top Brit in races two and three.

Dean Moor was next on the British Quadcross calendar and, once again, the venue served the local lad well. A one-one-two boosted Watson’s championship standing to second, just 12 points behind series

The championship contenders crossed the Irish Sea for the first two rounds with a double-header at Desertmartin in Northern Ireland. Watson finished the first day sixth overall after finishing ninth, third and ninth. The second round gave Watson’s competitors a glimpse of what may lay

ahead. Although he was caught out in a race three multi-quad pile-up, narrowly missing taking the overall win, third, second and fifth place finishes saw him heading back to the mainland with a championship fourth overall, just one point behind former team-mate Carl Bunce.

leader Winrow. The trip north to Leuchars wasn’t as successful, but the finale at Culham Motocross Park saw a revitalised Watson claiming the top podium position on both days. Fastest all weekend and three race wins.

Watson finished 2010 second overall in the British Championship, behind Winrow and ahead of Homes.

Watson’s skill and talent hadn’t gone un-noticed and he was snapped up by Richard Cole to ride in his factory-backed KTM UK Quad Team for 2011.

A factory starAnd so to 2011. With the KTM UK contract signed and sealed at the 2010 International Dirt Bike Show, Watson has his sights firmly set on race and championship wins. The British Quad Supercross Championship was first on the agenda and Watson did his team proud by taking the overall win at the final round and the championship title was in the bag. Job done!

The British Quadcross Championship was back to two races per round and the first one kicked off at a new-to-quad racing venue; Silverstone in Northamptonshire. Watson qualified first, but throttle problems and a poor start in the first race saw him back in eighth position. He quickly got to grips with the Silverstone circuit though and worked his way through the pack to take a creditable second behind John Mitchell. Mechanical problems in the second race

saw a frustrated Watson having to pull out of the race.

Round two at Duns in Scotland saw Watson battling with Mitchell in the second race and the pair remained tight until Watson got caught out on a tabletop and flew off it sideways. After tumbling along the ground, he jumped straight back on his quad, rejoined the race and incredibly, having been passed only by Holmes, finished third and also third overall. Next up was the third round at Tinker Hill in Northern Ireland. The KTM rider put in another consistent performance to take second and third and another third overall.

Back to home turf and Dean Moor for the fourth round. Watson stormed out of the dust and took the holeshot and race one win with an impressive 11.45 second lead and set the fastest lap time in the process. In race two Watson passed Mitchell on lap three, only to suffer from a broken axle as he landed from the biggest drop-off on the track. This resulted in a

DNF, but he was second in the championship with 124 points.

‘Watson dominant at Langrish’ screamed the headlines. Watson was on top form in round five of the ACU Goldspeed British Quadcross Championship, on the Bank Holiday weekend of 27-28th August. Riding superbly all weekend and out-performing the rest of the field, he took maximum points from both races.

Watson went on to win the Nett Quad Club 2011 Adult Championship, ahead of Lindsey Duke, but an horrific accident at the Quadcross of Nations where he was representing Great Britain, saw the end of his 2011 racing season.

The report on quad.tv read;“WAtsON Out fOR sEAsON Team KTM’s Mark Watson suffered serious facial injuries in a practice crash at the QX of European Nations in Germany last weekend, 24th & 25th September 2011.

Watson nosedived over a tabletop and sustained fractures to his jaw, cheek bone, eye socket and nose. He was airlifted to hospital and was due to undergo re-constructive surgery on Tuesday of this week.

Needless to say the KTM man will not be at the final round of the British QX series and so is unlikely to ride again until next year at the earliest.”

Mark was making an astonishing recovery from that accident and was optimistic for a best-ever season in 2012

It wasn’t to be. His young life was brought to an end all too quickly on 27th December 2011.

2011 British Quad Supercross Champion

Mark Watson #85

Mark’s Facebook is overflowing with tributes from his racing family, friends and former competitors from around the world. Here, we add to those thoughts and memories with a few sentiments sent in to the QUAD office.

Although I only knew mark for three or four years, I have known his dad John for over 20 years. We are all very, very deeply saddened by Mark’s untimely death but I can’t even begin to imagine how John feels. He has not only lost his son, but also his best mate!

When mark started quad racing in 2008 his riding style was rather aggressive and many including myself looked at him as ‘wild’, but as the years went by it soon became apparent that Mark had a huge amount of talent, commitment and self-belief and he just got faster and faster. It has never been about money with the Watsons, it’s all about racing. UK quad racing has lost a lad that lots of the younger kids, like my son Ayrton, looked up to and tried to emulate, not only on the track but also in the paddock. Ayrton kept coming to me at night-time to tell me he had just been speaking to “Watty” on Facebook. He’d show me photos of Mark clearing big jumps, etc, on his quad and he would say I’ll have a go at that next time I do a table top. But sadly this is all lost to us now.

The photos and the memories of Mark “Watty” Watson will last for ever; Mark you were a star just keep shining down on us. God bless.

The Knowles Family

I was very sad to hear the tragic news. In the few years I knew Mark through racing, he was a good friend and we had many a laugh at events all over Europe. He will be sorely missed by the whole quadding and motocross community and our thoughts are with his family.

John Mitchell

I would like to share with you these thoughts in the name of our Team, we are Cozzi Motor Sport from Italy.

Mark was a great driver and a great guy. We remember him fighting to win and smiling while walking through the paddock. A fighter loyal, a friend always ready to laugh and joke, or to help in time of need. We will sincerely miss you Mark, you will be always remembered by everyone of us.

Page 19: Quad Magazine January 2012

I just want to share with you and others our memories of Mark. Whilst you and your readers all knew him for his biking achievements we were lucky enough to have Mark and his team build our family home last year. I notice in all the articles about Mark there is very little mention of his talent as a builder and stonemason but in our opinion he was a craftsman of exceptional skill. At the age of 24 he ran his own construction business and from the attached photos you will see that he was comfortable and competent with sizable projects. He was a true professional in every way, he made the stressful experience of self build run like clockwork, and we can’t thank or praise him highly enough for his patience with us, his attention to detail, his work ethic, his advice and his integrity. He was such a modest guy, we didn’t even know about his quad racing until a couple of months into the build. And likewise I guess few of you knew much about the extent of his day job. We are incredibly saddened by Marks death and our thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Gwyn and Tim Ellis

I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Mark. We met during the 2010 DWT Series here in the States. He was a talent and was personable, making him easy to work with. His riding style was intense and was very helpful in development.

He will be remembered and missed. God speed Mark.

Wayne Mooradian, PEP Racing Shocks

It’s still hard to believe Mark is no longer with us.

We had helped Mark out with Motul Oil in 2011; he was nothing but a pleasure to work with. He was very professional in every way, which is a quality hard to find these days. His ‘no bull’ approach was a breath of fresh air. Best of all was that Mark did his talking on the track and made sure every race he competed in was a must-see affair.

As a parent, it was great to see Mark take time to talk to the kids, giving advice when needed or just having time for them. He was truly inspirational and professional, and a bloody good lad that will be sadly missed.

Rob Swinbank

To everyone that loved MarkI remember the first time I met Mark.

He was sitting outside my race shop in

Lake Elsinore working on his KTM. He had shown up from the UK and wanted to see if he could work out of my shop and do some racing with us in the off season. I told him to move his tools and quad inside the building. He raced the entire DWT ATV series with us. I had never seen anyone destroy that many engines in such a short time. Mark simply put the quads back together and kept racing. He was very fast and had the best attitude of anyone at the track. He hung out with Chad Weinen and the rest of our team for several months. When he left he gave us a framed jersey. It is hanging in my office today. I will definitely miss the class and style Mark brought to our team. God Speed!

Ride on #85 wherever you may be...Such a waste of a very talented young

man’s life. Our thoughts are with all of Marks

family and friends in these difficult times.

The team at ATVS ONLY LTD

I have known the Watson family since the 80s when Mark’s dad raced the EML

Mark you were a rider taken from us so young. Your smile will stay in the hearts of so many and your skill as a rider will stay with us forever.

A hero to so many. RIP #85 Mark Watson.

Stuart and Donna Findley

I don’t know anyone else like Mark who could come from never riding a quad, to achieving so much in so little time.

Mark was a truly professional athlete and was one of very few people who really had the determination and drive to keep pushing himself to the limit to fulfil his dreams. An amazing individual and very entertaining rider to watch, and one that will always be remembered. His was in with a good chance of winning his first British Championship and it is just devastating for such a tragedy to have hit a top guy and good friend.

My sincere condolences and thoughts go to his family and friends at this very hard time.

Ride in peace champ! Oli Sansom

Our memories of the Watson family and quad racing go back many years. Father

John was one of our riders when we first started the N.E.T.T. Series whilst Mark and his brother played on their ‘little’ quads. His potential was obvious even then. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Jim and Barbara Fiddy

A born natural racer who never gave up. He always rode at 100 per cent with an aggressive and unique crazy riding style. He is someone I will never forget battling with on track. A true ambassador to the British quad racing scene.

God bless and sleep tight MW #85

Stefan Murphy

A tenacious character on track and great ambassador for KTM during his racing career.

Our thoughts are with the family at this sad time

Shaun Sisterson, Managing Director, KTM UK

Whilst I didn’t know Mark personally, I have watched him on numerous occasions and have ridden with him at practice events. He truly was one of the best riders in the UK and what’s more remarkable is that he developed such a talent in a very short space of time considering he only transferred from sidecar racing in 2008. He was a real talent and will be sorely missed by the quad racing fraternity. Josh Waring

I knew Mark from his days riding an RM80 as a schoolboy with the Vale of the White Horse Club and he was a lovely lad and never changed when he grew up.

He always had time to speak to anyone and will be sadly missed. My thoughts are with his family.

John Elliott

So much to say yet no words can find the essence of why our 2011 Club Champion was so well liked, respected and admired, especially by the junior ranks.

He will be sorely missed and the NETT Club will be retiring the #85 at the start of the 2012 season as a sign of our respect for the man, the racer and the champion that was Mark “Watty” Watson.

It doesn’t matter what type of quad you ride or where you ride it, it’s absolutely crucial to fi t the right tyres. If you choose the wrong rubber hoops, your traction and steering could be severely compromised – and that can only end in frustration, lost races, and,

worse still, painful crashes

In terms of making a difference to performance, tyres are the most valuable

after-market component you can add to your quad. Often, standard-fi tment tyres are less than perfect for the model to which they’re fi tted; almost always, you can improve on the manufacturer’s choice. Far too many riders get hung up on aesthetic and mechanical tweaks that they neglect to think about their machine’s rubber – and they’re making a big mistake.

Forgetting about the importance of tyres isn’t exclusive to quad riders. Any road traffi c offi cer will tell you about the terrible state of many drivers’ tyres, seriously affecting the handling of cars, motorcycles and lorries. It seems to be a mental block; because tyres are stuck on the bottom of our vehicles, well below our eye-line, we tend to ignore them. Well, the time has come to take a close inspection.

tLC fOR tyREsRoutine checks

If you neglect your tyres, they are likely to become worn-out and/or under-infl ated

without you noticing. So, make sure you routinely inspect them – ideally, before every ride, but certainly prior to every race. Look for signs of damage, uneven wear and foreign bodies penetrating the surface. If you fi nd any serious-looking ‘wounds’, then consider a replacement, or at least get the tyre checked out by an expert.

How should you check your tyres? First of all, with the quad standing on a level, hard surface, visually check that it is sitting square and level. Next, visually check if any tyre appears to be under-infl ated. Push the machine forwards

and backwards a few metres to see if it is rolling easily and in a straight line. Check each tyre visually for wear or damage; remember to roll it back or forward a suffi cient amount so that you can check the complete tyre.

uNdER PREssuRETyre pressures

Tyre pressures are extremely important. They have a direct effect on the footprint-size of the tyre and fl exibility of sidewalls, which means they are vital for good handling and grip. Everyone’s an expert when it comes to quad tyre pressures, and there is a lot

Page 22: Quad Magazine January 2012

22 QUAD Magazine • January 2012 • www.quad.tv

of rubbish spouted on the subject. The most sensible thing to do is stick to the manufacturer’s suggested pressures (usually between 5 and 12psi); they didn’t come up with the figures off the top of their heads, after all. Buy yourself a quality low-pressure gauge – and test them frequently. Under-inflated tyres will cause handling problems and heavy steering, so it’s well worth the two minutes of effort.

Should you lower your tyre pressures in soft and/or muddy conditions? Yes, but only drop them by one or two pounds per square inch (psi); any more than that and the tread will distort and give less traction, with a greater risk of puncture and separation from the rim. You should only add extra pressure if you’re carrying a particularly heavy load. As a rough guide, the tyre section height should squash under load by between 15 and 20 per cent.

On the road, consistent pressures are even more important. Tyres do not need to flex or ‘squash’ as much on the road, and road tyres have a more rigid construction, so pressures generally need to be about 20 to 50 per cent higher.

sIzE MAttERsTyre fitment sizes

What do all those numbers on the sidewall mean, then? Well, it’s quite simple really; the first number signifies the overall (i.e. inflated) diameter, the second refers to tread width, and the final number is the

diameter of the wheel. Hence, a 20x11-9 tyre, when inflated, has a 20ins overall diameter, an 11ins-wide tread, and fits a 9ins-diameter rim. The example given is a popular rear tyre size. A popular front tyre size is 21x7-10, which, as you’ll now realise, has a 21ins overall diameter, a 7ins-wide tread, and fits on a 10ins rim.

Sometimes, tyre sizes are given in metric measurements, and it gets a bit complicated, as the numbers on the sidewall refer to different dimensions. The first number refers to width, the second to height (rim to edge) as a percentage of width, and the final number is diameter – in imperial inches! Yes, this is an odd system. So, for example, a 175/75-10 tyre is 175mm wide, and its height (from rim to outer edge) is 75 per cent of the width, and it fits a 10ins-diameter rim. Goddit?

Go-faSTER TypEStyres for racing

It’s best to stick to the manufacturer’s recommended tyre size, unless you’re a racer or specialist and really know what you are doing. Quadcross racers often choose an 18ins-diameter rear tyre, but keep to the standard size 20ins tyre on rougher tracks. Enduro riders tend to use a 20ins rear and up to a 22ins rear for sand races such as Weston Super Mare. The taller tyres give greater ground-clearance, but also give the quad a higher centre of gravity and increase the overall gearing, which may mean a change of sprockets. Invariably, though, the rougher

tracks usually require higher gearing and different tread patterns anyway. On the front, racers sometimes use size 20ins on smoother tracks, but 21ins is pretty much standard for everything else. Of course, 4x4 quads use bigger tyres, with chunkier tread patterns.

ON tHE ROAd Road-legal tyres

Obviously, the grippy, hard surface of the road demands a completely different type of tyre. Road-legal tyres must be E-marked, stamped with an approval number. The number identifies the country in which the tyre was approved. Without the approval number, the E-mark is invalid. The tyre’s load and speed rating must be suitable for the quad on which it is fitted. It is illegal to sell non-E-marked tyres for road use.

tREAdy tO gO?Tread patterns

Where are you going to ride? Answer this question carefully before choosing your tread pattern. A tyre’s tread dictates the size of the contact area, which is the part(s) of the tyre’s footprint that make contact with the ground. In theory, the more rubber in contact with the deck, the more grip – but this isn’t the case off road, where you need knobblies to derive traction by ‘digging in’.

Page 23: Quad Magazine January 2012

soft mudContact area: Very smallterrain: Very soft, saturated, slipperyused by: Racers, hill farmers

In thick mud, you need a tyre that digs deep into the surface. However, a general-purpose knobbly will not do the job. In these extreme conditions, the driving (rear) tyres need to take advantage of a paddle-steamer effect. In other words, the rear tyres must have large lateral blocks that dig in, rotate in the mud, and thus thrust the quad forward by pushing the mud back – rather like a mole digging a hole! Of course, the front tyres do not play a part in this mud-slinging, so they need only circumferential (not lateral) blocks to aid steering grip.

sandContact area: Smallterrain: Soft sandused by: Beach racers

Sand is tricky stuff offering minimal grip, so special tyres are often demanded. Sand tyres work in a similar way to the mud tyres described above – with long blocks, acting like scoops – digging in and pushing forward. These large, rigid blocks are totally unsuitable for use on any other type of surface.

dirtContact area: Small-mediumterrain: Soft to moderate dirtused by: Most off-roaders

On regular dirt surfaces and racetracks, you need a tyre that grips in two ways – digging-in with small blocks, but also gripping with a substantial part of its footprint. This means it can generate traction over hard-pack dirt and on softer areas. There are many different tread patterns available in this sector, for the various different grades of dirt.

RacingContact area: Mediumterrain: Soft to moderate dirtused by: Quadcross racers

This tread pattern is a compromise between soft mud and dirt types; it’s more aggressive than a general-purpose tyre, but with smaller blocks than the all-out mud-plugger. Racing tyres also have a softer compound, and so wear out quicker but offer more grip. Some of these tread patterns are bi-directional; that is, they can be fitted either way around – depending which performance characteristics are required.

turfContact area: Medium-largeterrain: Firm dirt; grassused by: Green-keepers, recreational riders, turf farmers

This tyre has an easy life, bumbling around on grassy surfaces. It distributes weight evenly across its surface in order to cause minimum damage to turf, making it stable and hard-wearing. It does not need to dig-in to the surface to generate grip.

RoadContact area: Largeterrain: Tarmacused by: Road-legal quad ridersAs discussed, road tyres are a completely different matter. On the road, where grip levels are fairly consistent, you need as large a contact area as possible. A slick tyre therefore generates the most grip, but only in the dry; you need tread to disperse water. Road tyres get hotter, due to greater friction, so must be harder and more durable.

fit for actionGetting ‘em fitted

It pays to get your tyres professionally fitted unless you have all the right kit. Serious racers invest in bead-breaker and compressors to do the job, as well as carrying spare wheels to events. Yes, it’s possible to fit tyres using levers, straps and a foot-pump, but it’s really not worth the blood, sweat and tears. Unless you have to, don’t.

technological revolutiontyre history

In the early days of ATVs, there was just one basic square knobbly, cross-ply, balloon tyre pattern, and that was it. Now, there are thousands of different tread patterns and compounds,

and types of performance, thanks to their scientifically developed make-ups. It’s all getting very technical.

Wheely, wheely goodReplacement wheels

Do you need aftermarket wheels? Probably not, but they are a welcome addition if you’re a serious racer. Lighter wheels reduce overall weight, of course, but they also make the suspension’s life easier – improving handling and performance. The types of replacement wheel available include spun aluminium, cast aluminium, and even carbon fibre. For racers, there are also rim-lock wheels. These have a machined disc bolted to the rim, which clamps the tyre bead to the rim to stop it separating in extreme use. They look pretty trick, too!

and some even have a radial construction. Look at any manufacturer’s brochure and you can grow old studying all the different sizes, types and applications. It’s great isn’t it!

Most quad tyres still have a cross-ply construction, although more and more radial tyres are being developed. Although there is a lot of testing being done on compounds, the utility and leisure market demands high wear performance, so compounds are pretty much the same across the board. In racing, though, some companies are offering three or four compounds of their latest race tyres. It’s not quite as simple as using softer compounds on harder surfaces; the latest high-tech compounds also offer different characteristics

gOOP Goop is an Aqueous Glycol solution which is non-toxic, containing very fi nely cut rubber particles, preservatives, binders, suspension agents and corrosive inhibitors, it does NOT contain fi bres or Latex unlike similar products on the market. Goop is suitable for use in both tubed and tubeless tyres, it is applied through the valve prior to experiencing a puncture and remains in place for the life of the tyre or tube, sealing as many punctures as may occur. It will not harm the rubber of the tyre or the wheel rim, it does not freeze in sub-zero temperatures and is also not affected by high temperatures, remaining stable and fully functional at all times.

When the time eventually comes to change the tyre or tube, Goop will simply wash away with water and does leave a sticky residue behind.

Virtually all quadders know that to ride unprotected is a recipe for serious injury. No matter how short and/or slow the journey, it doesn’t take much in the way of speed for a skin meets tarmac scenario to grind away a serious amount of fl esh. Of course, it is

not currently a legal requirement for quad riders to don any form of head or body safe-ty equipment but you’d be crazy not to at least wear the essentials, wouldn’t you?

W hen did you last take a look at your riding kit and consider its suit-

ability in terms of functionality and protection? Every rider should at least have a basic kit of helmet, jacket and gloves.

You don’t necessarily need to have huge amounts of cash to splash, but there are plenty of options available to suit your needs, and this feature is a great place to start. this month’s guide to quad mastery takes a look at riding on the road. The rules remain the

same, however, it’s highly likely that some of the costs relating to converting a quad to road-legal use may have changed so it’s always best to check with the

relevant governing bodies fi rst. Towards the end of 2009,

when the Get Quadding booklet was produced, QUAD recommended the Quadzilla RS7 as the best all-round machine for road riding. Quadzilla is still the machine for the job but the RS7 has since been replaced by the

RS8 which carries a retail price of just £5999.00 including VAT; a snip at only £400 more than its predecessor.

QUAD’s test of the RS8 (QUAD March 2011), follows on pages 44 to 48 in QUAD TESTS RELOADED.

How to | Ride on the road

If you’re going to ride on the road, you need to make sure you’re complying with the relevant laws. Not all quads may be used on Her Majesty’s Highways; you need to make sure

your quad is legal and that you are suitably qualifi ed.Farmers and others who use a quad for work

are, subject to certain conditions, allowed to ride on the road for short distances between work sites. However, we are not discussing these riders here; we are talking about fully road-legal quads which can be ridden as often and as far as you like.

To ride a road-legal quad on public highways, you need a full car (category B) licence or a full motorcycle licence obtained before February 2001. Bike licences gained after 2001 do not qualify you to ride a quad on the road. These days, you need to sit your full car test, for which the minimum age is 17.

You do not legally have to wear a crash helmet but it obviously makes sense to do so. What you absolutely must have is a valid Certifi cate of Insurance. If you do not have both licence and insurance, you are not legally entitled to ride on the road. If your quad is more than three years old, it must have an MOT (see box). You must also display a Vehicle Excise disc appropriate to the vehicle.

Quads are in the same tax band as cars, classed as PLG.

Really road-legal? The easiest route into road quadding is to buy a quad that’s road-legal as standard. Vehicles sold as ‘road-legal’ must meet various regulations to comply with road traffi c laws, and must be fi t to pass Whole Vehicle Type Approval. If a new vehicle is sold with a Whole Vehicle Type Approval Certifi cate, it can be registered and used legally on the road and should pass an MOT in three years time. Converting an off-roaderQuads originally designed for off-road use can be converted for the road, which must involve obtaining a Single Vehicle Type Approval (SVA) certifi cate from the Vehicle & Operator Services Agency (VOSA). VOSA produces an inspection manual, which defi nes all the relevant regulations, laws and tests that they apply to ensure vehicles are up to scratch. Legally converting a racing quad takes approximately two days and costs in the region of £1,500. Lights, brakes and tyres must be made road-legal, and the power output must be

You want to ride on the road, eh? Well, before you do, there are a few questions to answer. Do you have the right kind of licence? Is your quad fully road-legal? Does it need an MOT? Only once you’ve sorted all these details will you be ready to buy

tax, insurance and some riding kit suitable for the open road

LEttERs Of tHE LAW Road terms explained

Road: Legally speaking, a road is any highway or surfaced route to which the public has access. By defi nition, all highways are roads for the purposes of the Road Traffi c Acts (RTA), including some private roads and car parks. Agricultural vehicle: A vehicle used on the roads solely for purposes relating to agriculture, horticulture, forestry, etc. In practice, these vehicles should not travel for more than 1.5 kilometres on a public road – only between pieces of land being used for work. All terrain Vehicle (AtV): Any motorised vehicle designed to travel on four low-pressure tyres on unpaved surfaces, with a seat designed to be straddled by the operator and handlebars for steering control. Intended for use by a single operator and no passenger.Quadricycle: A vehicle with a maximum unladen weight of 400kg (550kg if intended as a goods-carrier) with a maximum power of 15kW and must adhere to various technical requirements.

QUAD MOTGetting testedAll quads older than three years need an MOT. Be warned, though, quads can be tested at some – but not all – class 4 testing stations. Unless the garage has quad-compatible equipment, they’ll have to turn you away. Always phone fi rst and check with the qualifi ed MOT tester. For more details on the quad MOT, visitwww.quad.tv

capped to 15kW (20bhp), with a dyno test to prove it.

Once prepared, a road-modifi ed quad must undergo the VOSA test, costing £85. If there are no problems, a Single Vehicle Type Approval Certifi cate is awarded, with a unique number. The owner must then go to the DVLA with a completed form V55/4, with the certifi cate number inserted in Box 10 and PLG in the box for the taxation class. Add a Declaration of Newness form (V267), a VAT form 414, a receipt for the quad, showing the VAT paid, along with a cheque for £121. The DVLA will issue a tax disc (VEL) along with a registration number and V5C document.

JUST THE QUAD Quadzilla RS7

Chris Pearson tested Quadzilla’s RS7 back in February. He was more than a little impressed by what he found:

“It’s a real powerhouse of an agricultural four-wheeler. The chunky, 698cc, fully automatic, engine gives stomping power and torque at all times and, thanks to the well set up CVT transmission, that power is always on tap. The RS7 is sturdily put together, making for a tough all-rounder that will take most knocks in its stride while also having the ability to punch back. With an on-road top speed of around 65mph, it makes for a great way of getting about too, so no need to get changed or slip into a different vehicle for that trip into town.

“With each wheel having its own suspension, the ride is smooth and fl at. In use, the RS7 is a breeze to drive; simply select a high or low ratio – or reverse, if going backwards is your thing – with the gear lever on the left-hand leg-shield and away you go. The CVT transmission takes care of the rest. Based on our fi rst impressions, this new machine is an instant winner and should prove a popular machine. Anyone looking for a powerhouse quad that can go just about anywhere will be pleasantly surprised by the RS7.”

ALSO WORTH A LOOK…Hyosung 450 RapierPaul Stevens reckons the Rapier 450 is also well worth considering:“Out on the road, I found the Rapier a pleasure to use. The gearing is spot-on, with plenty of acceleration in restricted form, and only a small amount of vibration. Its handling is very good, with the road-pattern tyres giving a smooth ride and excellent grip.

“Cornering on the Rapier is best done with caution, as with any road-legal quad. Provided you get set up properly for each corner, and judge your speed carefully, it’s great fun. The commendably quiet Rapier accelerates rapidly and smoothly, and tops out at around the 65 to 70mph mark. It would need more power to go any faster.“What didn’t we like about this quad? Well, some of the welds on the frame could be a little tidier, but this is just a small niggle, on what appears to be an otherwise very robust machine. The Rapier is an all-new machine, so there may well be teething troubles – time will tell. At the end of our test, I’m certainly not yet bored with riding this quad. My last gripe, then, is that I’ve got to give it back!”

MACHINE tEst | QUADZILLA RS8

This month we revisit the popular big ‘Zilla RS8 that was featured relatively recently in QUAD March 2011.

As outlined in the February 2011 issue of QUAD, the new, sharp-looking Quadzilla RS8 is now available. We managed to grab a clear break in the wet and windy February weather to put the big new ‘Zilla through its paces and fi nd out more on what it has to offer

 QUAD Magazine • January 2012 • www.quad.tv

Page 45: Quad Magazine January 2012

Clearly the aggressive and sporting style of the new RS8 points it fairly and squarely at

the 4x4 leisure/touring/sports market sector dominated by, and some might say, invented by, Can-Am. The lack of any racks and those aggressive twin-headlight, high mudguard looks puts it fi rmly in Renegade territory. But that territory starts at around £8000 for a Renegade 500 and breaks the £12500 mark for the top of the range 800R X XC, so at a note under £6000 for the new Quadzilla RS8, it is clearly worth considering if you are in the market for a sport/leisure 4x4 and were dreaming of a Can-Am, but smarting at the price.

The RS8 is manufactured in Taiwan by Dinli to Quadzilla’s specifi cations. Dinli design and manufacturing standards are now easily on a par with the majority of Japanese and American produced ATV products. Quadzilla’s top-selling 450R is another Dinli produced model and it is widely renowned as being close to bullet-proof.

The RS8 is actually a development of Quadzilla’s RS7 which won the QUAD Magazine 2010 Utility 4x4 of the year award. The well-proven DOHC four-stroke, liquid-cooled motor now has a 4mm larger cylinder bore, taking the engine capacity up 55cc to 750.2cc with an increase in (unrestricted) power and torque. The motor also features twin balance shafts to keep the vibes from the big motor at bay.

The main chassis has been strengthened and twin cast aluminium A-arms have been

fi tted on each wheel. These are claimed to be both

lighter and far stronger than the steel tube components on the RS7 and at £90 for the top and £100 for the bottom, if you do manage to break them, then it won’t break the bank to replace them.

Obviously the bodywork has been completely re-worked, with more than just a hint of

Renegade style showing through. And why not? It’s a big, bold, sharp, aggressive, racy style and it looks as good in the fl esh as it does on paper.

The RS8 comes in two colours; white and black. The white has a traditional smooth gloss fi nish on thick, quality plastic which all fi ts together nicely. The black is an interesting matt ‘crinkle’ fi nish,

which from our test seems to be uniquely practical in that it simply doesn’t appear to scuff or scratch. Or at least it does a very good job of disguising any scuffs or scratches. A sound idea which, if it works over a long period will defi nitely be copied by other manufacturers.

So it was on with the handlebar mounted choke lever, hit the starter button and the motor burst eagerly into life on a cold, damp February morning. No hesitation, no coughing or spluttering, just a steady tick-over from cold. There is a rumble down low; not quite a vibration, but you are aware that there is a big piston at work down there and the twin balance shafts are busy keeping it all comfortably refi ned and the full stainless steel exhaust system keeps it quiet out the back as well as looking good.

The left side gear selector has the normal High, Low, Neutral, Park and Reverse positions and a big push and turn 2WD/4WD/Diff Lock button is part of the thumb throttle unit on the right handlebar - all straight-forward for regular 4x4 quad riders. Next up was off with the choke, into High, hit the throttle and off we went.

There is a certain satisfaction

in hitting the throttle of a big bore CV auto quad. They just pull at maximum torque from tickover to fl at out. A seamless thrust forward, uninterrupted by the frantic juggling of throttle and gear levers. This was true of the RS8.

On tarmac, the RS8 can hit all the speed limits faster than most cars and it feels well planted without any tugging on the bars. The Maxxis Bighorn tyres aren’t best suited for the road of course, but the ride is still smooth and cornering feels safe, even on damp roads. Needless to say, if you were going to use the RS8 on the road more than off it, then other road oriented rubber would give improved ride and feedback.

Off the tarmac and the RS8 comes into its own. It may well look cool on a street corner or car park and will certainly draw plenty of attention, but its heart is in the

rough and it comes alive as you hit the dirt. On the spec sheet it is nearly 50kg heavier than the Renegade 500/800 and closer to the more utility equipped Outlander models. A closer look at the spec shows the RS8 fi tted with a 3000lb front winch and a tow bar, which don’t come on the Renegade, and racers would fi nd plenty of other parts to trim or lose before entering it in an off-road event.

Suspension is plush and more than adequate for clubman level competition, as are the Bighorn tyres. More serious racers - and we know there are already a fair number thinking about the RS8 – will be looking to more sophisticated suspension units and a choice of tyres. And there will certainly be some horses to be gained with exhaust and air-cleaner modifi cations, without needing to start spending big bucks on motor mods.

No matter what other manufacturers may claim, Quadzilla leads the quad and ATV market in terms of marketing a full range of machines with a competitive model in every category. The Quadzilla product quality, range, service and dealer network continue to improve and the pricing remains ultra competitive. The RS8 continues this trend. It is clearly aimed at the Renegade market and although it may not match the Can-Am in terms of ultimate performance, it is still a hell of a lot of quad for six grand and it will certainly appeal to a wide range of road and off-road buyers.

QUAD will be chatting to new RS8 owners over the coming months to see how they are using, abusing and modifying the new ‘Zilla.

I hope you all had a good festive season and Santa was generous. I am writing this just before

Ann-Marie and I head off for a skiing holiday so cannot report on how it went yet but hopefully by the time you read this I will be back at home safe and sound.

On the riding front, I am afraid it has been a case of intending to do things, but not being able to because of the weather, so not much to report. In the winter I do other types of cross training at a lower intensity, usually concentrating on endurance type exercises. This is important to get a good base fitness which you can carry out through the year, when you start doing the higher intensity exercises near the start of the season. This type of training has proved beneficial over the years and I am going to carry on with it.

There is a group of us with old 500cc 2-stroke motocross bikes that we use for fun and we had planned a weekend at Tain, riding them before Christmas, and doing

A month in the life of 2011 British and Scottish quadcross champion John Mitchell

a trial on the Sunday near Inverness. However, with the van loaded up and ready to go, the Highlands were hit with a blast of snow which put an end to a biking weekend. Even getting out cycling was difficult with the freezing temperatures and I don’t want to use my new road bike in the salt, so have been resorting to inside exercise in the form of circuit training classes and gym/swim/sauna … picking up the odd take-away on the way home!

I’m hoping that the next quad racing event I’ll be involved in will be the famous French endurance beach race at Le Touquet. It has been a bit of a last minute decision and I am waiting to find out if I can get an entry yet, but look forward to it as it is a superb event. Le Touquet beach race is the last round of a winter championship which the top European riders have been competing in so it will be a very competitive day’s riding, to say the least. The whole weekend is an excellent experience though and well worth a visit.

For the 2012 season I will be riding with ATV World again and I should soon be able to share details of exactly which machine and what parts, etc, we’ll be using. The whole team and quad setup in 2011 was absolutely flawless, so I think it would be difficult to better what we already have.

All the best for the season ahead.

Quads from Surrey and East/West Sussex – 13 in all - met up in the Old Kent Road and spent the day riding through and around, and taking in, some of the classic London sights such as Elephant and Castle, the London Eye, West Minister Bridge, Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, Parliament Square, Whitehall (the Cenotaph), Trafalgar Square (Nelson’s Column), Piccadilly Circus, The Mall, and of course St James’s Park (Buckingham Palace).

We then headed towards the North Circular Road and pulled in for a pit-stop at the world famous Ace Café. From the ‘Ace’, we headed over to Hanger Lane, Britain’s scariest junction, and yes, we did find some heavy traffic there. Next up was Kew Bridge, passing Kew Gardens then over to Richmond Park, down through Ham Common and straight into the centre of Kingston upon Thames. We then headed over to the ultra-civilised and again, world famous Cap in Hand pub in Surbiton for the last pit-stop of the day. The South Coast boys and girls left for the A24 around 5.30pm and probably still had another hour and a half ride to do.

We’re already talking about plans for a QH Spring time ride-out so please feel free to contact me via the Quad Heaven forum with any suggestions and we’ll see what happens.

Thanks to those who made the trip and happy New Year, to one and all!

Ultra-efficient Ameelie sent in her column in good time and so this month she’s taking a look back at a couple of end-of-year events and the joys of flu

I went to watch the AMCA beach race at Skegness in November. The track looked like good fun.

There was a huge turnout for the solos and I watched the start and about half of the race, before leaving to go home. John Mitchell was riding around on a very, very, very old solo, he was pretty quick. I didn’t realise that a lot of the top quad riders raced solos in a previous life! I was gutted I didn’t get to see the quads going around, but I had to work on Saturday, the day the quads were racing.

After far too much time away from the saddle, I decided to race in the first round of the Wyre Forrest Off-Road Winter series, held at Stourport-on-Severn. The misery of flu hit me in the week leading up to the race and I simply couldn’t get out of bed for three days – and that’s not just because I’m a teenager! Anyway, the weekend was soon upon us and I needed the practice so dad signed me up for the clubman class. I managed to drag myself out of bed and to the start line. I’ve ridden this

Boy-beating racer Ameelie Miller writes for QUAD

track many times before and I knew it was a rough track, so tried as best I could to mentally prepare myself for the two-hour long race ahead.

I was away from the start line in third until my seat fell off and I had to stop to fit it back on. As the laps went by I got more and more into the groove, getting a little quicker every time, I had no idea what place I was in so I kept going until they told me the race was over. I really enjoyed myself although once I stopped I couldn’t stop coughing and sneezing. I knew I’d either sweat the illness out or make it worse. I’m not sure which one I did, but I managed to

finish third in the clubman class. I needed that practice to try and get me back in shape, before the season begins again in earnest and with the track living up to its reputation of being rough and rutted, it gave me the kickstart I needed.

Hopefully, I won’t leave it too long until I ride again. I’ll be taking part in some of the brilliant Enduroland practice days to try and keep me fit and can’t wait for the 2012 season to really begin.

Thanks to everyone who has helped me out over the years and a happy New Year to you all.Meelie x

From one extreme, to another. With ultra-efficient Ameelie getting her column in early, studious Josh, who is working hard on his A-levels, got his in at the eleventh hour. As a result, it’s just a brief note from Josh this month

december was a very quiet month for me and I have only ridden once

since my last column. That ride was at Salter’s Lane MX track near Benniworth. It was the first time I’d ridden the track as, the meeting I’d planned to attend with the NETT Quad Club fell during my trip to India. It’s a great

With his adult rookie season assigned to history, Josh Waring reports on the next step of his quad racing journey

track to practice on and I shall be going there again soon, once they reopen for the 2012 season.

This month, I shall be sitting four A2 Level exams, which I am really not looking forward to. However, as I have been offered places at three universities, I’ve got a clear goal and great motivation to do well. As soon as the exams

are over, I shall be training hard and preparing my quad for the season ahead. I’m moving up to the Experts/Inters class this year, and really can’t wait.

I hope everyone has burned off all the turkey and is ready for a great 2012!

What a year! 2011 saw Danny Lloyd, Billy Langford and Ricky Roberts making a successful transition from the 250cc youth class to adult clubman, with Danny winning

the group ahead of Billy in second and Ricky fifth. They’ll be joined by the leading 250cc trio of Rhydian Owen, Lewis Ryan and Dexter Langford in 2012.

DQ RACING 2011 END OF SEASON REPORT.

A class change saw the 250s separated into clubman and expert which

provided more riders with a chance to achieve top five positions. To this end, the clubman class allowed new rider Miles Woodward to shine with a class win, ahead of Ryan Biggs and Jake Hammond.

As always the younger classes 8-10 and 10+ fought tooth and nail to the end of each of their hour and a half races on their 100cc machines. With invaluable support from their parents, the youngsters put on a good show at each round. Chad Pryce battled his way to first in the 8-10 category with his sister putting on the girl power

to take the overall group win in the 10+. Cleo Percival just beat her younger brother Sonny by taking fifth position in the 8-10 class and over in the 10+ Lewis Marston got the better of Luke Millington to take second overall, by a small margin of just two points.

In the adult racing, the novice class saw Jason Mills

romp home in first and Paul Williams second. It was an interesting expert class this year with Joe Andrews taking the win over Geraint Jones and in the Expert+ class the battle to the wire saw Martin Benbow get the better of Clint Eagle, with John Wilding third. The 4x4 class saw Stuart Jones taking first with Simon Lang in a close second place and Simon Webb in third.

The DQ Racing presentation evening took place on November 26th at The Kimnel Manor Hotel, Abergele, North Wales. For the fourth year running, multi-champion Paul Winrow kindly helped with the presentation of the trophies. In addition to the class championship trophies, thanks were made to all involved with helping the club.
