This will sound crazy to many of you who have so many goals you’d like to accomplish. And trust me, I know how that feels. I started out 2012 with a whole bunch of goals, but I only accomplished about half of them. I didn’t realize how things would change for me during the year, and anyway, 9 goals is too many. I’ve said this before, but it’s so important I’m going to repeat it: you’re at your most powerful if you focus on one thing at a time. If you have 10 goals, you’ll spread your focus thinly. But if you have one goal, you’ll be able to focus you energy and attention completely on that one goal. And that’s one of the secrets of success.

You might have 10 goals to achieve for your lifetime. If so, choose just one to accomplish this year. And focus completely on that this year. You might have shorter-term sub-goals to achieve in a month or two, but those should lead to your One Goal for 2013. Put your goal on your wall, on you computer desktop. Make it your mantra. Keep it your focus for 2013, and you’ll not only achieve it, but you’ll feel great for doing so.

1 One goalGoals are achieved by habits. What habit can you develop this month to help achieve your One Goal for this year?

Once you’ve identified that goal, you’ll need to commit yourself, hold yourself accountable to a group of people, and focus completely on that habit for a month.

2 Create new habit

It’s all good and well to set goals or resolutions, but the best plans are worthless if you don’t act on them. Action is everything. Take action today to make your goal come true. Tomorrow, take another action. In fact, take one action toward your One Goal every day, first thing in the day, and make it the most important thing you do every day. If you do that, there’s almost no way that you won’t achieve that goal.

The actions can be small things: making a list, making a call, doing some research. But take action.

If you’re a bit introverted like

me you might be shy about

asking for help. Don’t let that

I want you to quit your job

as much as you want to quit

your job, but I don’t want you

to do it before it’s time.

These days, whichever

community you should

be a part of is larger and

more easily accessible. Take

advantage of that.

The Willingness to Think Differently

most of the successful people I’ve ever known possess one traIt - the wIllIngness to challenge maInstream Ideas.

When you hear an idea that’s

different than what you’re used

to, pause. Instead of rejecting

it outright, consider it — is

there some merit? What are the

arguments, the evidence?

Let go of the emotions that come

up, the defensiveness. When I

mention the cruelty in meat and

eggs and dairy and leather and

wool (even the “humanely” raised

animal products), for example,

people become defensive and

angry. They cover their eyes and

ears, so they can go on doing

what feels comfortable. They lash

out and attack. And yet, if you set

aside those emotions, and look at

the arguments, you might learn to

think differently — and that applies

to all ideas, not just veganism.

When you are told that this is the

way to do things, take a second

look. Is this really the best way?

Are there other possibilities? If no

one has thought of them, can you?

Just because an idea is different,

don’t just accept it. Look at the

bulk of the evidence, and learn

to spot flaws in reasoning. For

example, there is a school of

people who believe that soy is

bad for you, saturated fat (animal

fat) is good for you, we should all

drink raw milk, slather butter on

everything (the Weston A. Price

Foundation). This is different than

mainstream science, but it’s wrong.

The bulk of the evidence is against

they believe, and their reasoning

is wrong.

Test out different ideas. Just

because most people don’t do it,

doesn’t mean it’s wrong. They

might all be wrong, and this might

be better. No better way to find

out than to test it. If it’s not a

good idea, drop it and move on.

Learn to be proud of your

ability to test things that people

traditionally believe in, and not to

worry so much if you stand out. In

fact, learn to see standing out as

good — not just to stand out, but

to forge new ground, to challenge

ideas, to express your individual

voice rather than blending in.

10 Benefits of Rising Early,And How to Do It

1. Greet the day. I love being able to get up, and greet a wonderful

new day. I’m inspired by the Dalai Lama, who said,

” Everyday, think as you wake up, ‘today I am

fortunate to have woken up, I am alive, I have a

precious human life, I am not going to waste it. I

am going to use all my energies to develop myself,

to expand my heart out to others, to achieve

enlightenment for the benefit of all beings, I am

going to have kind thoughts towards others, I am

not going to get angry or think badly about others,

I am going to benefit others as much as I can.’ “

2 Amazing start. I have a renewing morning ritual, I’ve gotten so

much done before 8 a.m., my kids are early and

so am I, and by the time everyone else gets in to

work, I’ve already gotten a head start. There is no

better way to start off your day than to wake early,

in my experience.

3 Quietude. No other noises. The early morning hours are so peaceful,

so quiet. It’s my favorite time of day. I truly enjoy that

time of peace, that time to myself, when I can think, when

I can read, when I can breathe.

4 Sunrise.I love how the day slowly gets brighter, when the

midnight blue turns to lighter blue, when the brilliant

colors start to seep into the sky, when nature is painted

in incredible colors.

5 Breakfast. Rise early and you actually have time for breakfast. I’m

told it’s one of the most important meals of the day.

Eating breakfast while reading my book and drinking

my coffee in the quiet of the morning is eminently more

enjoyable than scarfing something down on the way to work, or at your desk.

6 Exercise. There are other times to exercise besides the early

morning, of course, but I’ve found that while exercising

right after work is also very enjoyable, it’s also liable to be

canceled because of other things that come up. Morning

7 Productivity. Mornings, for me at least, are the most productive time of day. I like to do

some writing in the morning, when there are no distractions, before I check

my email or blog stats. I get so much more done by starting on my work in

the morning. Then, when evening rolls around, I have no work that I need to

do, and I can spend it with family.

8 Goal time. You should have one goal that you want to accomplish this week. And every

morning, you should decide what one thing you can do today to move

yourself further towards that goal. And then, if possible, do that first thing in

the morning.

9 Commute. No one likes rush-hour traffic, except for Big Oil. Commute early, and the

traffic is much lighter, and you get to work faster, and thus save yourself

more time.

10 Appointments. It’s much easier to make those early appointments on time if you get up early.

Showing up late for those appointments is a bad signal to the person you’re

meeting. Showing up early will impress them. Plus, you get time to prepare.

A Simple SystemAs you begin your spring cleaning for Chinese New Year, you might

begin to wonder how you managed to accumulate so much dust and

junk over the past one year. Of course, they didn’t just magically appear

overnight. Keeping your house clean all-year-round is really just a matter

of daily habits and effective system.

Here’s a sample system for house cleaning:

3First, have a big weekend dedicated to

cleaning, so you can start your system

with a clean slate. Get the whole family

involved (if you have one), and clean

one room at a time, from top to bottom,

clockwise, until you’re done. It also

helps to get rid of tclutter. You might

need two big weekends if there’s a lot

of cleaning to do.

Have a weekly routine: either designate one day for a

quick 1-hour clean (it shouldn’t be that dirty if you’ve

been cleaning as you go), or have different days

designated for different things — vacuum the living

room, for example, or wash the linens, etc.

5 Every few months, do a deep clean: clean out the

refrigerator and oven, clear out the cabinets and

clean them, etc.

From now on, have a clean-as-you-go

routine: when you’re getting ready in

the morning, do a quick wipe of the sink

and toilet and bathtub. Put things away

as you go through the day, wash dishes

when you’re done using them, wipe

the counters and table when you’re

done cooking or eating.

Also have a daily routine: Every morning, make your

bed, take out the trash, and do a quick pick-up. In the

evening, sweep the kitchen/dining room, clean up

after dinner, and do a quick pick-up before bed.
