• John Hanning Speke was an officer in the Royal Army who famously made three explanatory expeditions to Africa, during one of which he discovered and named Lake Victoria, the source of the Nile.

• He was awarded a medal with an inscription that read – “Honor est a nilo,” – ‘The honour is from the Nile’.

• This was also, interestingly a clever wordplay in honour of the man who paved the way for Speke’s exploratory exploits.

He used to play this in various folk festivals and circuses, inspiring the singer X to write the song Y in which Langhorne played the countermelody on the guitar.

• X is a Blended Scotch Whisky, which is part of Pernod Ricard. It traces its roots back to 1801, and its home is the Strathisla distillery at Keith, Moray in Speyside, Scotland, the oldest operating Highland distillery which was founded in 1786.

• When X was struggling to gain market share and its sales were low, its owners doubled its price - without changing the whisky. Consumers saw the increased price as evidence that this must be a quality brand, and as a result, the sales of X doubled.

• In the 1980s, some U.S. universities adopted the same kind of policy, and the X Effect became more associated with tuition costs than whisky. Colleges started to raise tuition fees to bring in more money and typically saw a significant increase in enrollment. At the time, parents equated higher tuition costs with a better standard of education.
