• A QR Code is a matrix code (or two-dimensional bar code) created by Japanese corporation Denso-Wave in 1994.

• A Quick Response (QR) code is a two-dimensional code that can be scanned by Smartphone cameras to automatically pull up

TextPhotosVideosMusic URLs

• These codes have become mobile-friendly ways to point people in the offline space to online resources.

• QR Codes are like real world hyperlinks.

• User QR Codes let your customers and prospects jump from print to online content.

To enable the mobile phone to understand what action it needs to take when the QR Code is scanned a service type is embedded within the QR code. I’ve listed a few service types currently used to give you a better understanding : (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IphTJHiKGos&feature=related)

You can also customize QR Codes with your own design features, logo or brand identity?

Generating QR Code

Page 11: Qr code (quick response code)

1) First, you’ll want to get yourself a QR Code generator and reader. If you’re an Android Smartphone super phone user (I use a G1) it’s a great fit. You can also get the Zxing reader for the iPhone and other devices as well. When generating your codes, select the primary function you want your code to communicate (contact info, GEO location, URL, custom text etc…) from the QR Code Generator.

2) Once you’ve generated your QR Code, download the image and import it into your favorite photo editing tool that supports layers. E.g. Photoshop but you can go with GIMP if you’re looking for an open source solution and Paint.net is another free option as well.

3) Now build your layers of custom design on top of your raw QR Code image. Try to visually integrate your custom design elements into the code rather than simply stacking them on top.

4) Test it with your QR Code reader to make sure your design tweaks didn’t hose your code.

5) Repeat this cycle until you’re happy with the appearance and the code is readable.

How Many Would Scan a QR Code:What percentage of Americans over the age of 18 would scan a QR Code? We can never know the answer to this question exactly because not only does it depend on the individual knowing what a QR Code actually is but also on a multiplicity of other factors such as motivation, presentation, time available etc. However if we know that in a given situation, when confronted with a QR Code, X% of the population would scan it, then that would be a nice statistic to have.

Siegel+Gale Simplicity Lab have done just that and it appears as a single line in one table of a 35 page survey report (PDF). Siegel+Gale measured the perception and comprehension of the Environmental Protection Agency’s two proposed labels illustrating data about a gas/electric hybrid vehicle (QR Codes on All New Vehicles by 2012). The survey explored which of the two proposed labels (vertical or horizontal) would be most understandable to the average American and which data were of most interest.

The overall survey results are very interesting but deep in the report is the table reproduced below.

14.5% of all those surveyed would have scanned the QR Code

As accessing the Internet via a mobile device becomes more popular, these technologies can save the user time and effort. Brands need to be ready when their target audience reaches this stage.

Applications of QR code in Online Marketing?

Sharing – There’s no limit to how, or even how much, you can share with QR codes. While a video or landing page is easily shared, you could go further and share an entire eBook and even multiple pieces of content that share a common link

.Community – Sharing is how you build community, and one of the favorite arenas for doing this is Facebook. You can use Likify to create a QR code that links your mobile device to a fully functioning LIKE button for your Facebook page. This greatly simplifies the process of merging your other communities with your Facebook page – and it is all accomplished in one click.Additionally, the accompanying signature “thumbs-up” clearly suggests the purpose of the code.

Calls to Action – After building a community, the next logical step is to mobilize them to take action. What are you trying to accomplish? You can alternate special offers by simply linking your QR codes to new landing pages, and you can combine then with email opt-ins to build your list.E.g. The QR code above takes visitors to a Facebook page welcome tab where the calls to action are Liking the page and a list opt-in.

SEO and SMO – Web objects such as images, music clips, and videos add valuable content to your social graph. QR codes enhance both your search engine and social media optimization. Now you can increase traffic to those searchable objects to further optimize them by encouraging more sharing.

Social Proof – To help build a community offline, it can be helpful to use your vibrant online communities as social proof of your influence and expertise. As one example, you can use QR codes to link to specific blog posts that have earned an abundance of activity.

Social QR Code's most popular feature is Facebook Like functionality. Essentially, this tool allows you to put "Like" buttons on physical objects and connect physical customers/clients with your fan page using their mobile phone.

How To Use Social QR Code with your Facebook Fan Page

How to set it up

1. Create your Social QR Code account on the Home Page.2. Navigate to the Create QR Code Page.3. You will need to have your FAN PAGE ID ready. Don't know what that is? If you have set up a Custom Fan Page URL, your FAN PAGE ID is everything after the slash in your web address bar on your browser. See the image below:

In this case, the FAN PAGE ID is SocialQRCode. This is what you will enter into the Social QR Code generator on the Create QR Code Page.

Note: If you do not have a Custom Fan Page URL, your FAN PAGE ID is different. See the image below:

In this case, the FAN PAGE ID is pages/Social-QR-Code/175576619123856 (Some browsers may vary in the URL. Your FAN PAGE ID will always include everything after pages...).

So, instead of showing users a generic message like the following sign:

Provide users with a simple “scan-able” action step by showcasing a QR code (go ahead and scan it!).Instead of giving users a more passive message like “Find Us” take the direct approach and create a “check-in station” where users can take direct actions (in fewer steps.)

Page 25: Qr code (quick response code)

Using QR codes to update Twitter Simply shoot the QR code (below) with a reader on your phone and you have a tweet ready to send out to the world (note: you may have to log-in to Twitter).Step 1:Make the URL (just change the red bit)http://twitter.com/home?status=insert%20your%20message%20hereUse these codes for special characters – (%20 is a space) (%40 is @) (%25 is #)

To make it even easier try using zeek interactive’s tool for generating the link

Step 2:Paste it into a QR code maker.http://createqrcode.appspot.com/

That’s It

What is the future of QR codes at retail?

QR codes are already very popular in Asia, and, as mobile becomes the dominate platform for accessing the internet, I expect we are going to see them more broadly used. Ultimately, I’d love to see paper Fact Tags replaced by digital Fact Tags. Retailers could even offer built in NFC transmitters to interact with shoppers' mobile devices. (For example, imagine Digital Fact Tags that could instantly change colors to highlight the products that best matched a search you performed on your phone). If it does happen it might take some time. For retailers, QR codes are going to be the best and most popular option for the next several years.

We can use QR codes in Mobile Advertising. Mobile Advertising has its own emerging market. (Case studies for mobile advertising from Google’s official blog)

Why is adoption of QR codes Important?

Are QR codes merely a gimmicky experience that very few shoppers will actually use in the store?A majority of consumers are doing on-line research before making purchases in store. The majority of all on-line activity will soon be on the mobile device rather than the computer.A majority of shoppers already use their mobile devices on their shopping trips.

YouTube

The largest video platform in the world began to embrace QR codes this year.

If you access the mobile YouTube site through an iPhone or Android device, you will now have the option to generate a QR code that embeds a link to the video so that you can share the video, bookmark it for quick access, or embed the code on a blog or Twitter account.

Similarly, Mozilla recently began to offer an add-on for its Firefox browser called Mobile Barcoder. The extension allows Firefox users to simply generate a 2D QR code of either a URL or selection of text for easy transfer to a mobile device.
