Bridging the Gap

George Quinlan, Jr

For the last several years, I have had the

opportunity to serve on a very special

board, the Music Achievement Council.

The council was established several

decades ago as a joint project between

instrument manufacturers, publishers,

retailers, and NAMM. Consulting with

leading educators, the Council has pro-

vided tools to assist in recruiting and

retaining instrumental music students.

The “Practical Guide to Recruiting &

Retention” and “First Performance”

tools have been a staple for most school

districts for decades.

A few years ago, a focus group of select

B&O directors from the area was

formed to evaluate and probe deeper

into the retention area. Thanks to Glen

Schneider, Bryan Ames, Rita Feuer-

born, Lori Lauff & Bryan Itzkowitz

for serving on this panel and to Marcia

Neel who interviewed countless band &

orchestra direc-

tors to harvest

the “best prac-

tices” to retain

these students.

As a result, the

newest publica-

tion “Bridging

the Gap be-

tween Middle

School and

High School” is

now available. And...the best part? It’s

FREE for downloading by visiting:

achievement-council/downloads
