The City of Howe hasannounced a "Town HallMeeting" to be held on Dec.6 at 6:30 pm at the HoweHigh School Lecture Hall at200 Ponderosa Rd. Cityofficials will discuss optionsfor growth from astandpoint of a short-termversus long-term. Allcommunity members areencouraged to attend.

The city council agenda forTuesday night's meetingincludes discussingannexation of property.Also being discussed is anupdate and revision forCertificate Pay Incentive foremployees. The city alsolists a direction from councilto Certificates of Obligationin the amount of $300,000.

Our recording device isfrequently laid on the tablein front of the principals atthe monthly school boardmeetings. Upon listeningback to the recording inorder to get some "exactquotes" from those in theroom, I found a "testing ofthe mic" at the beginning ofthe recording. The middleschool principal's voice wasvery recognizable speakinginto the mic as a trucker ona CB. "Breaker breaker 5-9." This brought a prettygood laugh. Nice work Mr.Wilson.

Nicholas Nelson, 38, of Plano, wasarrested Wednesday, November 7,at 5:15 p.m., when he was takeninto custody at the Dollar Generalstore where he was attempting tosell several grams ofmethamphetamine. Officers alsorecovered Oxycotin pills and $350.

On November 8, an evening rushhour traffic stop resulted in theseizure of Ecstasy, more than threeounces of marihuana packaged forsale, drug paraphernalia, and$3,600. Prince Freeman, 20, andEdwin Colon-Figueroa, 20, both ofFort Smith, Arkansas, werearrested and are facing charges fordelivery of a controlled substanceand delivery of marihuana.

Corporal Morris saw marihuanainside Hornaday’s vehicle.

Corporal Morris’ search of thevehicle uncovered four ounces ofmarihuana in individual baggiespackaged for sale, 45 cartridges ofliquid THC, a loaded semi-automatic pistol, and nearly$1,000. Hornady was booked intothe Grayson County Jail fordelivery of marihuana, delivery ofa controlled substance, andunlawful carrying of a weapon.

Hornady’s arrest comes three daysafter two Arkansas men werearrested in Howe for Ecstasy andmarihuana trafficking charges, andfour days after Howe officers,working with investigators from aneighboring agency foiled a drugdeal in the Dollar General store

Against Pottsboro, Howe held onto win 50-46 after leading 24-16 atthe half. Honore led the Lady

Bulldogs with 15 points followedby Anderson's 14. Harvey led theteam in rebounds with 10 followedby Copeland's five.

The girls then beat Bells 43-25 withCopeland again the leading scorerwith 13. She also led, along withHonore, with nine rebounds.

Howe then lost to Aubrey 33-23 ina defensive battle. Harvey led with12 points and Copeland led inrebounds with eight.

The girls are off for Thanksgivingbreak and return at Muenster to playthe Lady Hornets on the 27th.

Though I did notserve in themilitary, I am veryappreciative ofthose who have.I’m very proud ofmy son who is amarine that spenttime in Japan andThailand. He has aMasters degree andserved withHomeland Securityis now working as

a police officer at a Veteranshospital. Neither my father or hisdad were soldiers but on mymother's side of the family, it isquite a different story. Mymaternal grandfather fought inWWI and was in France. He wasinjured in the war and accordingto my mom, he was never thesame. I can barely remember himas a child but do recall a fewdetails like when we would visit,he would greet us at the doormaking meow sounds like a catand then he would always peeland slice apples and set them onthe coffee table. I ate the applesand laughed at his meows. Hiswife, my grandmother passedaway when I was even younger.They had 7 children, 3 boys, 4girls, and my mother was thebaby. Like many families duringthat time period, all three sonswere eventually enlisted in themilitary. However, I thought itwas even more unique how thefather and each son was a soldierin a different war. The dad WorldWar I, the oldest son was in Japanduring WWII, the second son waskilled in Korea, and the youngestson served in the Vietnam era. Ivaguely remember two of theseuncles and now realize they bothsuffered terribly from PTSD. Myuncle who was killed in actiondied in 1950 eight years before Iwas born.

I wish I had been old enough tospeak with these family membersabout their military experiences.My mother can recall a fewmemories and recently I contactedthe department of military affairsand requested some of theirofficial documents. I received afew things but much of it wasdifficult to read and some wereunfortunately destroyed in a fire at

the National Personnel RecordsCenter Archives in 1973. My momwas very close to her brother whonever returned and was convincedthat he was her mother's favoritechild. His nickname was Kennyand he worked a little part-time jobbefore he went to the war and sheremembers he would give her tencents every Saturday to buy somecandy which she really lookedforward to. He would also buy hismother flowers every week and shewould sit them on the kitchentable. She also remembers the daywhen military representativesknocked on their door and told hermother that they were sorry toinform that her son had been killed.She ran through the house wailingand screaming no please no, overand over. My mother said it was aterrible time and she can recall hermother going to bed and stayingthere for weeks.

I currently have the privilege tovolunteer as a chaplain at aveterans health care facility and it'struly an honor to spend qualitytime with the many fine men andwomen who have served ournations armed forces. I teach Biblestudies and lead worship serviceswith the old hymns which theyreally enjoy. I’m on call whenevera resident becomes seriously ill andpresent with the family wheneversomeone passes away. I’ve cometo accept that many veterans whoneed constant medical care do nothave family or friends to visitthem. Many of the older ones haveoutlived everyone but its still sadto walk into a room and not seeany pictures or greeting cards. I’veasked the staff on numerousoccasions if a certain resident hashad any visitors and they cannotremember the last time someonewas there. I’m also a chaplain for asmall honor guard team whichpresents memorial services formilitary veterans. I open and closein prayer and have been known tosing the national anthem onoccasions. I encourage you to setaside some time and visit a veteran.They would appreciate it verymuch and I promise you will alsobe blessed beyond words. Veteransday not only remembers those whoserved our country in the past butalso recognizes those who continueto serve today. We share a sincere

Though he was able to helpscientists answer many questionsabout cancer and other diseases,some cases were still beyondreach. Tragically, Gilman was one

Gilman, a Dallas-based researcher, employed manystudents and scientists in his labs ashe researched the innermostworkings of cells in the body, workthat led to the Nobel Prize. Hisresearch led to radically newunderstandings of how cells workedand ultimately inspired otherscientists to develop new techniquesin medicine and important advancesin cancer research.

The future Nobel laureate was bornAlfred Goodman Gilman in NewHaven, Connecticut, in July 1941.His father was Dr. Alfred ZackGilman, a Yale University professorand researcher who was respectedthroughout the medical communityfor his important writings on thestudy of pharmacology and earlystudies of chemotherapy as a cancertreatment. When he was young, thefamily moved to White Plains, NewYork, a suburb of New York City,where his father worked as aprofessor at Columbia University.

As a young man, he inherited hisfather’s fascination with science.After graduating high school, heenrolled at Yale University. Hegraduated with a bachelors degreein biochemistry in 1962. Heentered graduate school at CaseWestern Reserve University inOhio. He was reluctant at first toget a doctorate in pharmacology,the study of drugs, their effects, andtheir interactions, as he wanted anidentity somewhat separate from hisfather. He was talked into it andwas swept up by the research andnew discoveries unfolding beforehim and obtained a medical degreeas well by 1969.He worked briefly as a researcherfor the National Institutes ofHealth. In 1971, Gilman took aposition as a pharmacologyprofessor at the University ofVirginia School of Medicine wherehe published articles on cellularchemicals. He was hired in 1981 tobecome the chairman of thepharmacology department at theUniversity of Texas SouthwesternMedical Center in Dallas.

Gilman discovered what becameknown as a “G protein,” whichhelps cells “communicate” witheach other on a chemical level,helping a chemical messagereceived from one cell activate achemical reaction within thereceiving cell in response, alsocalled a transducer. Through hisresearch, scientists were able tobetter understand how cellsreceived information from eachother, processed those messages,and acted in response.

In a series of experiments in the late

1970s and early 1980s, he beganworking with lymphoma cells andnoticed the unusual propertiesthey had on the molecular level.In lymphoma cells, the cell itselfcould receive chemical signalsfrom other cells but could notproduce chemicals or enzymes inresponse. In the process ofbecoming cancerous, the cell hadlost the protein that allowed it toprocess outside instructions.Once a G protein was re-introduced into these cells, theycould process these chemicalsand produce new chemicals inresponse. While this did notchange a cancer cell back into ahealthy cell, scientists betterunderstood how cancer behavedin the body.

In other words, Gilman’s workidentified how cancer cellschanged on a molecular level andhow cancer cells and healthy cellsinteracted with each other. Thisproved an importantbreakthrough as researchersbegan researching new cancertreatments at the cellular andgenetic levels. Once they betterunderstood how cancer cellsformed, mutated, and spread, theybegan to find ways to moreaccurately target cancer cells withchemotherapy and radiationtherapy as well as developingnew surgical techniques. Asdoctors and researchers appliedthese new ideas in the 1980s and1990s, cancer survival ratesbegan to climb significantly.Further, scientists could alsodevelop better techniques andmedications for a variety ofdiseases since they betterunderstood how damaged cellsworked.

The breakthrough was soimportant that Gilman andbiochemist Dr. Martin Robdell,was awarded the Nobel Prize forPhysiology or Medicine in 1994for their discovery of the Gprotein and subsequent researchinto it. Gilman noted with somehumility, “You can expect tohave some good luck if you areworking hard on a tractableproblem and taking reasonableapproaches. The trick is torecognize good luck when ithappens. . .” The research byGilman and Robdell spurreddramatic changes in medicalresearch.

In 2004, he was promoted to deanof the medical school andeventually rose to vice-presidentby 2006. He retired in 2009.Gilman had long been thankfulfor the opportunity to learn froma number of Nobel Prize winnersduring his years in college and asa young researcher. In his lateryears, Gilman became anoutspoken advocate of scienceeducation in Texas schools andcondemned efforts to diluteteaching of evolution in publicschools. For a scientist such asGilman who had spent his careerresearching cells on the molecularlevel, evolution was obvious.And understanding evolution was

In the 1970s, the AAP decided touse the research of one individual –Murray Straus of the FamilyResearch Laboratory, University ofNew Hampshire – who was latercredibly accused of bias by his veryown research assistant as the goldstandard when it came to the issueof disciplinary spanking. Sincethen, it has stubbornly turned ablind eye to any research thatcontradicts their no-spanking-under-any-circumstances position.

The research in question finds, forexample, that children who areoccasionally spanked by lovingparents score higher on measures ofoverall well-being than childrenwho are never spanked. Alsonoteworthy is the fact as thepercentage of parents who spankhas declined significantly, so has


the mental health of America’schildren. That doesn’t mean thatspanking is essential to childhoodmental health, mind you, but itdoes mean that the AAP is nottaking all the available evidenceinto consideration.

The AAP supports groups thatadvocate for anti-spankinglegislation – groups like EndPhysical Punishment of Childrenand the World Health Organization– which would make it a crime fora parent to spank. Again, the blindeye is turned to findings byobjective researchers (DianaBaumrind, Robert Larzelere) to theeffect that when parents areprohibited (or prohibit themselves)from spanking, child abuseactually increases.

In effect, the AAP believes thatgovernment bureaucrats should bethe final authorities on what formsof discipline parents should beallowed. Significant in this regardis the AAP’s broad indictment ofany form of discipline that is“aversive,” meaning punitive. Bysanctioning only “positive” formsof discipline (i.e., praise andreward), the AAP subtly andarrogantly claims the moral highground. To paraphrase ElbertHubbard (1856 – 1915), “If youcannot answer a man’s arguments,all is not lost; you can alwaysdemonize your opponent.”

The American College ofPediatricians was formed in 2002by a group of physicians –including a former AAP president– concerned that the AAP wasabandoning scientific objectivityand embracing politicalcorrectness when it came to socialissues that impact child rearing andthe family.
