The Economic Geology Research Centre (EGRU) at James Cook University in Townsville is offering 2 x one-day workshops in QGIS early in 2020. QGIS is a free open-source program that runs on PC, Mac and Linux systems. The EGRU QGIS workshops are designed for intermediate and experienced users of GIS. While the workshops are offered for geoscientists, they are also open to other professionals who use GIS and want to find out about QGIS and what it can do for them.

14 February 2020

QGIS for GeoscientistsThis workshop will comprise

• An introduction to the various features of QGIS• Extensive hands-on sessions using QGIS to create maps and to demonstrate the import and

display of various types of data (vector, raster, geological, geochemical, geophysical, and satellite imagery).

• Examples of using free on-line data via web servers, and using plug-ins to select, download and process satellite imagery.

15 February 2020

More QGIS for GeoscientistsThis workshop is designed to expand on the previous workshop and provide more detail on using QGIS for earth science applications. It is also aimed at users of QGIS who would like to expand their skills and participants are encouraged to bring along their questions.

The workshop will begin with a brief review of QGIS 3 and will be followed by a series of hands-on exercises covering;

• Useful plugins• Registering raster images• Reviewing the process of assigning pattern fills to polygons• Joining spatial and non-spatial data• Using the new Geopackage file format and why• Searching for and use of open source WMS data• Plotting drill hole traces and visualising drill holes in 3D using QGIS2Threejs• Geological legends• Review of remote sensing applications in QGIS

Time will be allocated at the end of the day for discussion topics from participants and answering specific user problems
