The Huffington Post is one of our most valuable clients and bright example of dedicated team building with 5 years total duration of the project.

The Huffington Post dedicated team was established by QArea in 2006 and consisted of 3 developers at that moment.

In 2013 the team is built of 40 qualified specialists including:

•31 developers, including PM and technical leaders

•7 dedicated testers

•1 system administrator

•1 DBA.

The Skyhook dedicated development team has been working since 2006.

The team counted 20 members at maximum (in most active period of development) establishing 3 development teams and 1 tester.

Every team had own team lead and the whole project was managed by Product Manager. Technical management of development was mostly from the side of customer.

There were 2 teams of C++ developers to cover all the mobile and embedded platforms. These teams were developing one SDK part of the product, other - customized application for geopositioning.

Third team consisted of PHP developers who developed website, web portal LOKI mostly to demonstrate positioning capabilities but with features of social network, internal project tracking system

RebelMouse is the youngest of QArea’s dedicated team but it is rapidly growing.

The project started in December 2011 and it’s beta-version was launched in June 2013.

The Huffington PostSOLUTION

The portal is based on the MovableType platform, which has been modified to minimize the number of database queries and to improve performance. To load a server in order to process pictures, CSS and other statistic content, Amazon S3 is used.

To ensure stable and efficient work under heavy and peak loads we have used the memcache technology, which is a general-purpose distributed memory caching system that allows speeding up dynamic database-driven websites by caching data and objects in memory to reduce the number of times the database must be read.

QArea developers have implemented a rather serious new functionality for this site: basing on Google Maps API it was created our own custom map that operates a large number of images generated by our team, works with large amount of data (about a million rows) and supports a huge number of users.

A powerful statistics system has been implemented in the back-end: there is a statistics of tracking of entries, statistics of visits referred from different search engines. There is also statistics of the sites referring to huffingtonpost.com and general tracking of keywords/key phrases which can be used to refer the users to the site.

RESULT

The site has been featured on the main page of Yahoo several times. The site lives perfectly with 200+K visitors per hour.

RebelMouseCHALLENGE

The task was to develop a social media aggregator that allows to create user accounts, to connect different social media accounts and conveniently manage the information from them on one single platform.

DESCRIPTION

Social media aggregator for managing social media information.

SOLUTION

RebelMouse is an aggregator for social media that was launched by Huffington Post CTO Paul Berry. On the first look this platform looks like a digital newspaper that represents user’s social media events.

Basic registration allows users to connect their accounts on Twitter and Facebook. The updates from the connected accounts are represented in the collage-styled information flow that shows user’s presence within social media. RebelMouse allows user to arrange the posts displayed on the dashboard. The user page is updated automatically, but the user can customize it deleting updates that are not necessary or sticking the important ones to the top of the page. Also among the RebelMouse tools there is a bookmarklet to share any content that has been found by the user on the Web.

The RebelMouse platform also works on the mobile application for iOS. This allows people and businesses who has huge personal followings to choose a convenient way to make their fans reaching all their recent updates.

Skyhook was founded in 2003 to capitalize on the increasing demand for location-based services. The first location technologies, GPS and cell tower triangulation, were inadequate - leaving frustrated mobile consumers with slow and inaccurate positioning information. In response, Skyhook developed a software-only location system based on Wi-Fi positioning, GPS and cell tower triangulation.TASK

To implement a website allowing users to register for Skyhook Javascript API key and promoting this technology to web-developers/site owners. SOLUTION

The portal is based on Symfony 1.0 PHP framework and using Propel ORM to maintain Javascript API registrations. Google maps API is used to display Loki JS API sample code results. Integration with Loki JS API has been performed in order to demonstrate the technology on How it works and Findme pages.
