“My quintessential travel experience was on the last tour: I went to see the Chanel show at Fashion Week in Paris. I hadn’t seen a lot of Paris on previous trips but I stayed right on the Place Vendôme. Afer the show I walked around to Karl Lagerfeld’s shop, which is kind of secret, and spent hours in there looking through his selection of photography books.”

N O T- S O - L I T T L E P R E A T U R E S
They’re one of Australia’s hottest bands but The Preatures are fast becoming citizens of the world, writes Andrew P. Street.
THE life of a band – and the
travel it involves – isn’t all it’s
cracked up to be. “We were in
Omaha [in Nebraska] for fve
days,” says guitarist Gideon
Bensen with a laugh. “Omaha!
What are you going to do?”
Touring is one thing for
The Preatures – being tourists
is another. “You know that
musicians on tour barely get to
see anywhere, right?” says singer
Isabella Manfredi. “What sort
of recommendations can bands
make? ‘Don’t miss the gorgeous
backstage of this club…’ ”
The past two years have
been something of a whirlwind
for the Sydney-born pop/rock
quintet – a fve-album deal with
Universal Music, the worldwide
release of their debut album,
Blue Planet Eyes, major
airplay for their breakthrough
single Is This How You Feel?
(for which they won the
prestigious $50,000 Vanda
& Young songwriting prize in
2013) and, not surprisingly,
a lot of international travel.
It has been a period of
adjustment for all, especially
Manfredi, who is not only the
frontwoman but also plays
keyboards, writes all the songs
and nailed down the album’s
sound with her boyfriend,
Preatures guitarist Jack Moftt.
However, the band – now on
the road until October for their
Australian tour – seem to have
◖ Isabella wears Chanel jacket, $4590, and
shirt, $2360; Levi’s jeans, $120; Asos hat,
$49; Amy Tamblyn ball and chain necklace
(top), $75, crystal star necklace, $75, gold
beads bracelet (top), $40, and “Orbit” ring
(left middle finger), $80; all other jewellery
and belt, her own
managed the transition with
ease. They all declare their most
recent international tour to be
the easiest yet, having learned
a thing or two from their frst,
hesitant overseas jaunts: pack
light, look after your health,
never miss the chance to eat,
sleep or use the bathroom
and if you’re in a place for
a few hours, use that limited
time well – which means a lot
of eating at the same places.
“You can’t risk it,” says bassist
Thomas Champion. “Even
just getting your bearings
where you are staying takes
a day and you’ll still get lost
on your way to grab a cofee.”
“A lot of what we know
about cities is based around
eating or washing,” adds
Manfredi. “We know a lot of
pubs, a lot of restaurants and
a lot of laundromats.”
So life as a rock star isn’t
quite the whirlwind of exciting
travel that it appears? “No, we’re
always just missing stuf!” she
exclaims. “Like in Amsterdam,
we get into the city and are told
about the Rembrandt exhibition
and the Van Gogh Museum. So
we rush in and, of course,
they’re closing in half an hour.
We ended up just watching kids
skate out the front.”
Of course, even that outcome
is kind of rock ’n’ roll.

Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation ambassador
Catriona Rowntree knows a thing or two about resilience
– much of it learned, she says, from the women she has
encountered during her decade-long association with the
foundation. “One woman in Australia dies every 10 hours
from ovarian cancer,” says the presenter of the Nine
Network’s Getaway program.
For many women and their families, a diagnosis of
ovarian cancer – which has a lower survival rate than
breast or cervical cancer – “is a position they never would
have thought they’d fnd themselves in”, says Rowntree.
She says research funds are needed to create an early
detection test as well as to fnd a cure. “With breast
cancer, it might present as a lump in the breast but with
ovarian cancer, there are virtually no obvious indicators
that something is awry.”
To add its voice – and funds – to the campaign, Danish
design company Georg Jensen has released a bespoke
Jacqueline Rabun-designed pendant called Ofspring,
which symbolises hope. The company will donate $50
from each pendant, on sale in stores and online for $195,
to the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation.
Here, flmmaker Gracie Otto, actor Marta Dusseldorp,
fashion designer Alexandra Smart and social entrepreneur
Holly Ransom proudly show of the pendant and refect
on the importance of resilience.
Life forceWorn by four inspiring women, a delicate pendant becomes a symbol of hope in the

FILMMAKER,
THE LAST IMPRESARIO
“When I was working on my
documentary about [theatre and
film producer] Michael ‘Chalky’
White, I saw him show great
resilience. At 79, with so many
health challenges, he’s still at
parties – he’s out every day living
life to the fullest. I think having
determination and asserting
yourself is as important as being
around family and friends who
support you. Our family is very
close and I draw strength from
my mother, who can multi-
task a million things a day and
never complains. Sometimes
as a woman, you feel you do
twice the amount of work for
half the recognition.”

FASHION DESIGNER,

“We describe the woman we
design for as a woman of
contrasts. She is, at any one
moment, a mother, a daughter,
a businesswoman, a lover,
a friend and a wife. She plays
so many different roles in her
life, most often with grace
and dignity and inspiration.
It has been a 13-year journey
for us and that’s taken a lot
of resilience. We try to juggle
it all but we are really lucky
to have been able to grow
a business and have children
at the same time. [My sister]
Gen and I were inspired by our
mother, who showed incredible
resilience during her battle
with cancer. She showed so
much courage, strength and
so much fight. I think when
you lose a mum or someone
close to you, it puts a lot of
things in perspective. As life
gets chaotic, it’s important
to take yourself back to
those important times in life.
Your family and friends are
the most important things.”

Marta Dusseldorp
ACTOR,
A PLACE TO CALL HOME
“I have had a lot of cancer in my
family and among dear friends;
I don’t really know anyone who
hasn’t. So I walk for them and
I walk with them. I want to give
them my strength, my resilience
to help them go through what
I think is one of the hardest
things you’ll ever have to face in
life. At 42, resilience has changed
for me over the years. At first
you think that nothing can touch
you, that you are impervious to
anything – not just mortality but
you also have a sense that the
world is your oyster. I think, as
you get older, you realise that
the shell you are given as a child
serves to grow that pearl! For me,
culture feeds my resilience; it gives
me ideas, hopes and dreams. We
need to be exposed to as much
as we can as young as we can.
Voltaire says that creativity is
judicious imitation, so we need to
see and feel and hear so we can
copy it – and there is nothing
wrong with that. Everything
comes from something.”

Holly Ransom
CEO,
EMERGENT SOLUTIONS
“My grandmother has lived through the Depression, war and raising four kids. She even made it through a scare with ovarian cancer. She has incredible resilience. I marvel at her ability to be positive, to always be focused on others. It’s an incredible attitude and character trait that I hope has rubbed off on me. I want to make the best choices I can by being around people who get you to focus on the upside. It’s all about attitude – keep positive and remain optimistic. If you can’t do that as a leader then the team working around you won’t. I am lucky to be surrounded by an amazing group of leaders who continually inspire me. We’re not an island; we need to know that one of the most important things is reaching out to others when we don’t know what to do and we’re feeling like everything is against us. As humans, we are meant to support each other.”

Oh, Man...Who said fragrances were just for women? Scents for men have never been more sophisticated or alluring...
E L S A M O R G A NMake-up director, L’Oréal
Paris Australia
How do you stay fresh
on a flight?
I eat very lightly. No salty
foods or anything that’s
going to cause water
retention. I try to go
vegetarian and eat lots
of leafy greens. I also
make sure that I do a bit
of back-of-the-plane
yoga! Also, there’s nothing
worse for me than drinking
alcohol while flying. I just
stick with water.
What’s an instant fix if
you’re looking tired?
Do one thing that brightens
up your look and do it
extremely well. Try applying
a matte, bold lip colour
– in an orange or red – for
a quick, easy fix.
Is there a budget beauty
buy that’s best in class?
The L’Oréal Paris
Voluminous Butterfly
Intenza Mascara ($26) –
I swear by it. It’s not a huge
investment but it gives
a very high-end finish.
When it comes to skin care,
what do we get wrong?
Not preparing the skin
before applying make-up.
You need a light, effective
hydrating moisturiser and
primer that agrees with
your skin. Also, always apply
foundation before concealer.
Light foundation and then
a strategic concealer is
the best way to achieve
perfect skin.

Wellness
Well, well, well…A country spa retreat with yoga, meditation and wine?
Breathe in, drink up and feel the serenity.
The saltwater infinity plunge pool at Gaia Resort & Spa’s luxurious Komala Villas accommodation
September 2015 | QANTAS 1 6 1
MY USUAL “wellness regimen”
consists of eating green and
purple things – not all of them
jelly snakes – and getting the
odd massage from the dollar-
a-minute shop down the street.
My sole experiment with Pilates
was when a Chinese flm star
invited me to a private class:
just her, me, her personal
instructor, three assistants,
a minder, a guard and a gaggle
of fans to whose high state of
excitement I contributed by
accidentally kicking her
miniature poodle across the
room. Meditation? I have an app.
So arriving at Gaia Retreat &
Spa in the Byron Bay hinterland
of NSW is not so much ascending
to a higher plane of wellness as
it is turning up in a new solar
system. One with a magnolia-
scented atmosphere never
shaken by the trill of a mobile
phone and where the natives
have been bred to make every
guest feel at home. And I do
– despite my actual home not
featuring a personal infnity
plunge pool or views across 10
hectares of landscaped grounds.
“Breathe with me,” says Tim,
the king of Kahuna massage at
Gaia’s spa. He dances around
the table, rhythmically kneading
me into submission as I match
him inhalation for inhalation.
(“I liked the heavy breathing,”
I later say to another guest, who
looks at me dubiously and replies:
“I think of it as quite paternal.”)
In another round of treatments,
I am steamed like a dumpling
and polished by the regal, steely
haired Angelika. She informs me
that the scrub combines wattle
seed, macadamia oil and brown
sugar. I say it’d make a nice
salad dressing. “We put nothing
on the body that would be bad to
put in the body,” she responds.
Post-spa, I recline like
Scheherazade among silk-
covered pillows in the harem-
like alcove of Kukura House.
The zhooshed-up Samoan-style
longhouse is the communal
heart of Gaia. I’m in a near-
stupor of wellness.
Some of my new friends
gather for a pre-dinner glass
of organic wine. This is no
boot camp and thank goodness
for that; wellness goes down so
nicely with the odd glass of
wine or cup of cofee, I fnd. That
said, tonight I forego the aperitif
and make my way through the
evening mist to the hilltop yoga
studio for a meditation session
led by an ethereally serene
young woman called Grace.
Legs on the wall, backs on the
mats, we guide our breaths to
the soles of the feet… and an
hour has passed, somehow, and
it’s time for a three-course dinner.
The food here is both insanely
delicious and absurdly healthy.
In my post-meditative state,
I understand that to resist the
pistachio crumble would be
unenlightened. I eat everything
placed in front of me over the
next three days and mysteriously
return to Sydney a kilo lighter.
Chef Dan Trewartha is clearly
a magician. When he ofers a
cooking class, 15 of us show up
and take dutiful notes on the
making of kale chips and
healthy chocolate mousse.
I also take every other class
going. The reclining nude I make
at clay sculpture has feet like
Grandma’s slippers. And I’m
S TO RY BY L I N DA JA I V I N
PH OTO GR A PH Y BY TO N Y A M OS
quite sure the yoga teacher is
talking to me when she gently
observes that the dog in the
downward-facing dog pose is
not a chihuahua. But there’s
no pressure, no judgement.
There’s so much to do that
I retire to the outdoor hot tub
to work out how to ft it all in.
My plush, mink-hued bathrobe
hangs on a peg. A breeze rustles
the top of an umbrella tree. The
air flls with the whistle-and-
crack of eastern whipbirds…
what was the problem again?
