5. How did you attract/address your target audience? NARRATIVE THEORY Enigma Code Our film, like most, does contain elements relating to the enigma code. Our story line does pose many questions for the audience. One of the main questions we expect the audience to ask is why is the girl is secretly taking pictures of the young boy in the park. Equilibrium I believe our film has subverted from the convention of a starting point of equilibrium as it is clear from the beginning that a baby has died and girl is clearly disturbed. I would consider this a state of equilibrium as it already poses problems in the audience’s minds. Binary Opposites Our film has conformed to the idea of using binary opposites, however it may not be clear from the beginning of our film. The girl with the camera and the girl in the park are the two in opposite states. The girl with the camera has lost her little brother, as shown by the empty cot and the pictures of the baby on the wall. However the girl in the park still has her little brother, this is where the two total opposites are established. Props Character Function I do not believe that Props character function can be effectively applied to our film. Although it may have been easier to identify more characters into there different roles as the film went on, I find that even in the opening two minutes his theory is flawed. For example I do not believe the mother sitting by the cot would fall into any of the character types described by Props character function. Therefore our film has subverted from this.

Enigma CodeOur film, like most, does contain elements relating to the enigma code. Our story line does pose many questions for the audience. One of the main questions we expect the audience to ask is why is the girl is secretly taking pictures of the young boy in the park.

EquilibriumI believe our film has subverted from the convention of a starting point of equilibrium as it is clear from the beginning that a baby has died and girl is clearly disturbed. I would consider this a state of equilibrium as it already poses problems in the audience’s minds.

Binary OppositesOur film has conformed to the idea of using binary opposites, however it may not be clear from the beginning of our film. The girl with the camera and the girl in the park are the two in opposite states. The girl with the camera has lost her little brother, as shown by the empty cot and the pictures of the baby on the wall. However the girl in the park still has her little brother, this is where the two total opposites are established.

Props Character FunctionI do not believe that Props character function can be effectively applied to our film. Although it may have been easier to identify more characters into there different roles as the film went on, I find that even in the opening two minutes his theory is flawed. For example I do not believe the mother sitting by the cot would fall into any of the character types described by Props character function. Therefore our film has subverted from this.

SOUNDTRACKI don’t believe we used our soundtrack as way of attracting audiences. More to create a desired interpretation of those on screen, we chose to use a lullaby as our soundtrack which was to make the audience feel uncomfortable as a lullaby is something normally associated with innocence and childhood.

COSTUMEThe little boy was dressed in a white t-shirt and red jumper over the top. The white t-shirt was used to portray the innocence of the young boy, and how good he is, as the colour white is usually associated with good (.e.g. Angels). However we also put a red jumper over the top to signify that there is a level of danger, as the colour red is often associated with blood, death, danger and evil.

The girls costume when she is in her house is all black. Black is often associated with evil, sin and malevolence, the opposite of good and innocent which is the connotations of the colour white. This is another example of binary opposites used in our film. The use of colour motif to create a desired meaning for audience was technique used which allowed for us to display the characters and there qualities without giving away any personal information. It also allows for us to reach, and grasp the attention of a much wider target audience from early on in the film .e.g. if the film was played abroad, people would be able to gain the same interpretation of the characters no matter what language they speak.

CONCLUSIONTo conclude the main aim of our opening two minutes was to draw in the audience through the conforming to the enigma code and leaving the audience with many un-answered questions. I learnt through my analysis of many other thrillers that the use of the enigma code is essential to a great thriller, therefore we have used as a way of trying to draw/include the audience within the plot as much as possible.
