Q4 – HOW DO YOU USE MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IN
THE CONSTRUCTION, RESEARCH, PLANNING
AND EVALUATION STAGES?
This presentation is focused upon the technology
which I have used throughout construction of
making a music video. This is evidence for question
four of my evaluation.
PHYSICAL TECHNOLOGY ;
SAMSUNG VIDEO CAMERA
I used a Samsung video camera to record every single piece of footage for my
music video, this meant that I believe although without editing software I would
not have been able to edit my video without the camera I would have had no video
to edit. I chose to use a smaller camera over a large HD camera due to the fact
that it was easier to use and handle. I found it rather easy to use the video camera
however to begin with I found that as I was not familiar with this piece of
technology it was harder to use that I first anticipated. If I were in the position to
use a video camera again I would put the effort into filming more practice shots
before I began to record any scenes of my music video. Before I filmed any footage
I did some research into to lighting in relation to what works well and what does
not which was presented in a video on this blog. This meant I was continuously
aware of what worked well and looked good on screen. All of the footage which I
used was stored on a memory card and I then transferred it over to my user area
with a card reader. Upon using this camera I was not aware that the quality was
going to be bad in relation to how it would have looked if I used a HD camera.
Here are some images of me using the camera:
NIKON CAMERA To shoot the still images for my ancillary texts I used a still Nikon
camera which I borrowed from the media department. As I had used a
Nikon camera last year to shoot the still images for my music magazine
FC, CP and DPS – I found that I was much more confident to explore mise
en scene and cinematography in relation to angles. This meant that my
images look much more affective than the ones which I placed on my
music magazine in my first year in media. This camera produced my
images in brilliant quality, making it easier to edit these images when I
came to edit my ancillary text images. These are some images of me
using the NIKON camera.
IPHONE 5S:
To keep in touch with my
model I used my iPhone 5s to
keep in contact her. I text
messaged her several times to
schedule filming and shooting
days. This made it easy to plan
ahead and also on some
filming days I requested my
model to bring some mise en
scene items.
APPLE MAC I used the Apple Mac suites in to edit my software on a programme named
iMovie. I put a lot of thought into which program I wanted to use to edit my
footage on and it just so happened that the Apple Macs had the software on
which I wanted to use. I found it pretty simple to get my head around using a
Mac however to begin with it confused me a little. On thing I was not aware of
was that I could only edit my software on one particular Mac after importing
the footage, if I knew this before I chose to use the Mac computer I would have
maybe chose to use a different software as this caused problems when
deadlines came closer and there was a demand for the Macs. This made me get
a little stressed towards the end of the coursework deadline, which was not a
good very good, causing me to sensitive to criticism and particular comments.
This is an image of me using the Apple Mac:
DELL COMPUTERI used the DELL computers which were available to me all around college
– all of my work saved to my work area within the college software making
it easy to access all across college. However towards the deadlines the
demand for these computers also became very high making it hard to find
a computer to do my work on. I used these computers mainly to use the
Microsoft, software as they had more Microsoft programs on them which I
could present my work on. As silly as it may seem I found it easier to get
my written work done on these computers as the keyboards were much
larger meaning that I could type quicker than on any other computer. As
my evaluation counted for 20% of my overall coursework I believe this was
a main piece of physical technology also to contribute to completing my
evaluation. This is an image of me using a DELL computer:
SOFTWARE TECHNOLOGY ;
IMOVIE iMovie was the main component to creating my final music video. This software was
installed on an Apple Mac which I have previously spoken about. As these Apple Macs were
new they were extremely quick to use. The process of me using the program to make a
music video is on my blog already named ‘Process of Making a Music Video’. I had a small
knowledge of how to use this program and found much help online on websites such as
Youtube and WIKIhow which gave step by step instructions of how to get certain affects and
edits. As these computers were new to the college this year the staff had minimum
experience with them meaning that much like the students it was also trial and error for
them. I chose to use this programme over ones such as Adobe Premier Pro due to the fact
that there were more Mac computers which this software was stalled on. Initially making me
believe there would not be such a high demand on them. However I was wrong – as I have
previously stated. If I used a program again I would spend much time practise editing. If I
were to complete this brief again I would possibly use Adobe Premier Pro as the staff would
be able to guide me better into making choices for my music video. Here is an image of me
using iMovie.
PHOTOSHOP Photoshop was a program which I had large experience in
using as I used this program heavily throughout the
construction of a music video last year in Media Studies. I
did experiment more with photo manipulation in relation to
better looking skin, whiter eyes and thicker eye brows. The
following images to the left show this. The images on the
right show the process in which I went through to create
the front cover with the different color on each side of the
models face. Other things I have done on Photoshop are
shown on my blog yet I am demonstrating how I have
improved using this program from last year. Other tool I
used are ones such as the blur, quick selection, eraser,
brush and shape tool.

MICROSOFT
I used Microsoft in order to complete all of the written work for
my media course. Powerpoint was probably the program
which I used the most on this software as I presented my target
audience research on Powerpoint and then transferred it onto
SlideShare in order to present my presentations online. On all
of my blog posts I wrote them up on word to begin with as I
needed to use spell check as I wrote quickly when writing blog
posts in order to get as much work as possible done.
ONLINE TECHNOLOGY AND
NEW MEDIA:
GOOGLE Google was the search engine I primarily relied on throughout the research
planning and construction of my music video. This was mainly due to the fact
that it was pretty fast and I seemed to get the best results from this search
engine over other ones such as Bing and Yahoo.
PREZI
I used Prezi a lot to present the planning and research part of my course work as I
found that it was a fun way to get the work done. This was the second time using this
program – again using it last year. This gave me the confidence to use more Prezi’s to
present my work as I got high marks for this part of my course work last year. I
enjoyed using Prezi as it allowed me to be more creative therefore it took away the
idea of doing coursework and turned it into a fun activity. Encouraging me to quickly
complete this part of my coursework.
NEW MEDIA This quote taken from http://
www.webopedia.com/TERM/N/new_media.html gives a clear definition of
new media. ‘A generic term for the many different forms of electronic
communication that are made possible through the use of computer
technology. The term is in relation to "old" media forms, such as print
newspapers and magazines, that are static representations of text and
graphics.’
New media allows audience to access the media content at any given
point, at any given time, in any given time on virtually any device. The
audiences are active and are able to given feedback and their opinions on
particular products. I believe that new media websites are a good way that
audiences can give feedback on the given product. This is why I presented
my work on New Media websites such as Facebook, YouTube and Blogger.
YOUTUBEYoutube was the online website in which I published my music video –
YouTube allowed my audience to view the video and like/dislike it and
comment. YouTube also made it easier for me to post my music video onto
my blog for the examiner to see. In a way this is one of the most
important pieces of technology which I used as without this it would have
been almost impossible to show the examiner my work. I found that it
took a particular amount of time to publish my documents to YouTube and
was not always confident of doing so as I was nervous of criticism
however I learnt that all criticism is constructive.
Youtube was also the place in which I did my market research into
existing products during the research process this allowed me to become
aware of conventions of music videos in my chosen genre.
FACEBOOKI published my music video on to Facebook to gather feedback about it.
Which I will focus on in question three of this evaluation. I believe that
Facebook was an extremely good place to gather feedback as my ‘friend
list’ is made up of people who are in my target audience therefor I
gathered back feedback directly from my target audience. Also due to the
nature of this website I believe that people were not ‘scared’ to give their
opinion on my video as people are entitled to their own opinion.
