Nine years ago, Alternatives in Action set out to capturethe heartbeat of a generation. What better way to do thisthan through the medium of film?

Since its inception in 2005, Project YouthView has paved theway for youth to learn real world skills while coordinating anevent that has showcased nearly 100 youth-created filmshorts, highlighted the work of over 275 young filmmakers andfeatured eight powerful documentaries. The event itself hasinspired intergenerational dialogue among over 3,000 atten-dees, who respond powerfully each year to the unique stories, perspectives, concerns, and solutions presented by youth.

As Project YouthView has grown, so too has Alternatives inAction. This year we expanded our community programsand now serve as the Lead Coordinating Agency of school-based services and supports at four Oakland and Alamedahigh schools. We've grown from engaging a couple hundredyouth to over 1,000 young people and their families eachyear. Our youth are leading inspiring new initiatives in theircommunities, like the Season of Peace–--a story that will beshared in tonight's program.

Project YouthView proudly joins forces with collaborativepartners such as Comcast, HBO, the Alameda Theatre &Cineplex and the Alameda Unified School District, as well as,local businesses who lend support to help us create moreopportunities for youth to be seen and heard.

So, with shared passion and enthusiasm, we welcome you toProject YouthView 2013. Together, let us watch with keeneyes and listen with open ears to the messages of powerand hope presented by today’s young filmmakers.

Welcome to the show! The Project YouthView Committee

In San Diego, a young teenage girl’seyes stare into a compact mirror. She paintsa dramatic black swirl around her eye. Shenever knows what her day will bring, but sheknows at least it will always begin with paint.

INOCENTE is an intensely personaland vibrant coming of age documentaryabout a young artist’s fierce determinationto never surrender to the bleakness ofher surroundings.

At 15, Inocente refuses to let her dreamof becoming an artist be caged by her lifeas an undocumented immigrant forced tolive homeless for the last nine years. Coloris her personal revolution and its extraor-dinary sweep on her canvases creates aworld that looks nothing like her own darkpast—a past punctuated by a fatherdeported for domestic abuse, an alcoholicand defeated mother of four who oncetook her daughter by the hand to jump offa bridge together, an endless shuffle yearafter year through the city’s overcrowdedhomeless shelters and the constant threatof deportation.

Despite this history, Inocente’s eyesenvision a world transformed…wherebuildings drip in yellow and orange, wherepink and turquoise planets twinkle with res-cued dreams, and one-eyed childlike crea-tures play amongst loved babies and purpleclouds. Inocente’s family history is slowlyrevealed through her paintings.

Told entirely in her own words, we come-to Inocente’s story as she realizes her life is ata turning point, and for the first time, shedecides to take control of her own destiny.Irreverent, flawed and funny, she’s now chan-neling her irrepressible personality into afuture she controls. Her talent has finally beennoticed, and if she can create a body of workin time, she has an opportunity to put on herfirst art show.

Meanwhile, her family life is at a tenseimpasse—if she legally emancipates herself

from her mother tostrike out on herown, she’ll risk plac-ing her brothers infoster care, but tostay is unbearable.

INOCENTE isboth a timeless storyabout the transfor-mative power of artand a timely snapshotof the new face ofhomelessness in

America, children. Neither sentimental norsensational, INOCENTE will immerse you inthe very real, day-to-day existence of a younggirl who is battling a war that we rarely see.The challenges are staggering, but the hopein Inocente’s story proves that the handshe has been dealt does not define her, herdreams do.
