A BRIEF SKETCH ON THE ART OF PYROGRAPHYWOOD-BURNING, concisely speaking, is simply drawing with a red hot point.

The first thing to be considered in Pyrography is the outfit. Let it be a goodone as it will be more durable and produce better results than one of inferiorquality. An outfit consists of a benzine bottle, bellows or bulbs connected by

rubber tubing. The bulbs being on one end, the bottle in the center, and the handle andpoint on the other end. An alcohol lamp is also necessary for the heating of the platinumpoint, as any other means of heating is apt to cause this delicate instrument to becomeclogged up.

Select a good piece of wood, bass or holly being more generally used, althoughbirch, maple and satinwood are also desirable.The best benzine for this work is the ordinary kind obtained from any paint store.The refined benzine is not suitable. If too fresh it will not work properly. Should suchbe the case, let it stand in an open bottle for several hours before using.New points are sometimes difficult to heat, or fail to retain the heat properly, but byre-heating them in the alcohol flame several times the defect will soon be overcome. Fillthe benzine bottle about half full. Light the alcohol lamp after filling the benzine bottle,as the benzine is explosive. The alcohol is also inflammable. The use of Flemish ArtAbsorbent Material will prevent explosion.Hold the point in the alcohol flame until it glows, then press the bulb gently until thepoint is white hot. Different degrees of heat are necessary for different kinds of work.This is regulated by the slow or quick pressure of the bulb. The quicker the pressurethe hotter the point will be. The handle containing the point is held in the right handand the bulb in the left. This will seem awkward at first as different movements are madewith each hand. Practice will overcome this and other difficulties.

Some instructors recommend the pupil to practice various strokes on a piece ofwood,perpendicular, horizontal, oblique, curved, wavy, etc., thus becoming familiar with themanagement of the point. Others think it more encouraging to select some simple design.The main fact in wood-burning being contrast, you must decide whether you desire alightor dark background. It is always best to outline the design first and then put in thebackground before shading, as there is danger of shading too dark, in which case, with adark background the full effect of the design would be lost. If the ground is to be light,the design must be dark. The best effects, however, are produced with the dark ground.All strokes should begin and end, as it were, in the air ; very much as you have seen awriter make preliminary flourishes before touching the paper with the pen, only of coursenot in so pronounced a manner. This is to prevent the appearance of unsightly spotsand dots which detract from the beauty of the work.A slow sweeping stroke is the chief object, keeping the point always in motion. Ifthe point rests for a second on the wood a dot or hole is the result. This is the mostdifficult point to master. Do not bear heavily on the point as it will bend easily whenhot. To produce dark, heavy lines go slowly with very hot point, and for lighter moredelicate ones, quicker strokes with cool point regulated by the pressure ofthe bulb. Deepburning is always the most effective, giving almost the appearance of carving ifdone well.

rFor instance, the lower part of a design burnt deeply gives a raised appearance. Anotherway to bring the design out and produce the effect of carving, is to burn deeply all aroundthe outline, working it out into the background about an eighth or a quarter of an inch.Always keep the design to the left of the point, that is, work on the right side ofthe design.Move the article around as you progress as this prevents the scorching or discoloring ofthe design.Many articles already stamped in simple designs may be procured so that a knowledgeof drawing, although desirable, is not absolutely necessary unless more ambitious work isintended. In large pieces there is much intricate shading which should not be attempteduntil after much practice. Do not be discouraged, however, as knowledge will come withpatience and practice. You will find it hard at first to learn to burn against the grain ofthe wood. The point must be held very firmly and steadily as it is easily caught or turnedaside, giving a weak, straggly line. Make the outline, as near as possible, in one continuousline without lifting the point from the wood. To those understanding drawing, it mightbe said: "Treat your burning as you would a drawing in pencil or charcoal. Put in thelittle deep touches just as in drawing."

Carving and burning combine most effectively. The wood is carved out around thefigure, raising the design from the background which is to be dark, thus producing a mostexcellent effect of carved wood.

Color is often introduced in conjunction with burning. It must be transparent toshow the deeply burnt shading and lines through the color. Water-colors may be used,also oils thinned with turpentine, and stains already prepared can be obtained.

If an even unshaded background is to be used, the article must be kept in one posi-tion working always in one direction. Rough grounds are often used which are producedby short deep lines. Dotted ones are made with the extreme end of the point, small dotsclose together. Parallel lines close together ofuniform depth make another effective back-ground. A shaded background may be very dark at the bottom shading lighter towardthe top, or dark around the design to bring it out, growing lighter toward the edges.Pyrography may be employed in other materials beside wood, such as leather, velvet,and even cardboard. Leather-burning requires more practice and knowledge than wood,but care and perseverance will soon bring good results. Be careful that the point is notused so hot that it enters the leather making a hole. After practice the point can be usedas hot as desired without scorching the leather, but it must not remain a second inone place. In shading on leather the design must be dark as there is seldom a backgroundrequired. The light, smooth shading on leather must be done with a cool point, as other-wise the whole design would be dark giving no tone to the work. The deep shading isvery effectively done in lines, as in wood-burning. Applique work is very handsome andis made by applying a design of one color of leather upon another, or figures cut fromleather upon other materials. The burning should be done in the broad poster effects.

In doing heads and faces a cool point must be used, as thick lines give a heavyappearance. For delicate work of this character a fine point is desirable. For ordinaryburning only two points are necessary, the straight blunt one for wood, and the curvedpointed one for leather.

After the work is completed it may be given a coat of shellac.
