Pyrantel pamoate acts as a depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent.

Acts as a cholinesterase inhibitor and ganglionic stimulant

Spastic (tetanic) paralyzing agents, in particular pyrantel pamoate, may induce complete intestinal obstruction in a heavy worm load

Mechanism of action

Pyrantel is indicated in the treatment of ascariasis.

Pyrantel is indicated in the treatment of enterobiasis

Pyrantel is indicated in the treatment of multiple helminth infections.

Pyrantel is used in the treatment of hookworm infection (uncinariasis) caused by Ancylostoma duodenale (common hookworm; Old World hookworm) andNecator americanus (American hookworm; New World hookworm). 

Pyrantel is used in the treatment of trichostrongyliasis caused by Trichostrongylus species.

Pyrantel pamoate may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to pyrantel pamoate. Using pyrantel pamoate alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or perform other potentially dangerous tasks.

The entire household should be treated with pyrantel pamoate if one individual in the household has pinworms.

After treatment with pyrantel pamoate, clean the bedroom floor by vacuuming or damp mopping.

If any worms other than pinworms are visible after treatment with pyrantel pamoate, contact your doctor.

Use pyrantel pamoate with extreme caution in CHILDREN younger than 2 years of age. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed.
