A Note From Joan This time I wasn’t on the way to the forum! Fortunately I was at home when Jan Leed and Sue Pickles dropped by – apparently for the third time

over two days.

Not only that: THEY HAD APPARENTLY READ ONE OF MY ARTICLES IN THE

PRESS!!! And came bearing a load of PRIZES

FOR THE PARKINSON’S “Walk in the Park” raffle.

Thanks a million to you both, and also to the

others who donated to the collection. I will take them down to the meeting of the “Parkies”

Bendigo support group next Tuesday. Read next week’s column for full particulars of how you can

help raise funds for research to help people with this affliction and have a great day out.

Cheers for now, Joan

Goldfields Libraries Update

by Russell Easton

We have a couple of events

coming up over the next few

months at Pyramid Hill library

agency, centred around the NDIS

(National Disability Insurance

Scheme).

The first workshop is NDIS 101,

and is designed to help people

with disability, as well as their

families and carers, get ready for

the National Disability Insurance

Scheme.

Session covers topics such as:

• What is the NDIS and how

does it work?

• What kind of support can I

access through the NDIS?

• Accessing the NDIS

• The roll out of NDIS in the

Loddon area.

This session will be held on

Tuesday 21 August

at 10.30am-12.30pm.

The second session, NDIS Plan

Implementation Workshop, is

for people who have an NDIS

plan, or will have one soon and

would like to know the next steps

to take. This session will be held

on Tuesday 18 September at

10.30am-12.30pm.

For more details, or to register your interest, either speak to Kylie at the neighbourhood house, call

03 5449 2790, or email [email protected]

Mayoral Column

Wandering Stock On Roads

Livestock on roads are a significant danger

to motorists. A few community members

have recently asked me about the correct

process for reporting livestock found

wandering on roads.

VicRoads is the responsible authority for

livestock on all highways & main arterial

roads throughout the Shire. VicRoads roads

are A, B and C signed roads, eg. Calder,

Wimmera & Loddon Valley Highways, &

arterial roads such as the Boort Pyramid

Rd, Boort Wedderburn Rd, Bridgewater

Maldon Rd, Bendigo Pyramid Rd &

Bridgewater Serpentine Rd.

Council is responsible for livestock

wandering on local roads.

Any loose livestock should be reported

immediately. Contact VicRoads on 131

170 for highways & arterial roads, or for

local roads contact Council on 03 5494

1200.

Please ensure you can provide accurate

directions to the location of the livestock.

Owners of livestock must ensure that

fencing is properly maintained. If fencing is

not secure, then a ‘Notice to Confine

Livestock’ may be issued. This means that

fences must be repaired within a certain

time, or that livestock must be kept off that

property until the fence is repaired to an

adequate standard.

Fee Free Waste Days

The next fee free waste disposal days are

scheduled for Sun 19th August.

Fee free waste days are an opportunity to

dispose of up to four cubic metres of

general domestic waste free of charge. This

includes green waste, mixed recyclables,

general household waste & white goods.

Charges still apply for tyres, bricks,

concrete, mattresses & e-waste, as these

items have additional third party costs

associated with their disposal.

Sun 19 August at Pyramid Hill

from 8am -12pm.

Remember to bring your licence or rates

notice to verify your address so you can

FREE HEARING TEST

Australian Hearing will be visiting Northern

District Community Health, 12 Victoria Street,

Pyramid Hill on Wed. 15th August from 10am

onwards to offer free hearing checks for

seniors.

Hearing loss is a prevalent issue in the commu-

nity, with around 60 per cent of Australians

over 60 suffering from some form of hearing

loss. Getting your hearing checked is a simple

and painless way to learn more about your

hearing, and what can be done to help.

Rousso’s Recipe

Hot Vegetable Soup

Prep Time: 10 minutes Cooking Time: 45 minutes

Total Time : 55 Minutes Serves: 6

An amazing bowl of delicious Vegetable Soup, perfect for lunch paired with fresh bread!

Health Benefits Health Benefits Of Bay leaves Bay leaves contain vitamin A,C, magnesium & calcium which are good for your bones. They also have potassium & iron for proper body function. Bay leaves may also sooth body aches & pains such as pain from arthritis. Health Benefits Of Kidney Beans A half-cup serving of kidney beans provides you with approximately 9 grams of fibre. Kidney beans, like other legumes, contain no fat or cholesterol & are low in calories so are good if you are looking after your heart or trying to lose weight. Some canned beans are high in sodium but many companies offer a low-sodium alternative. They are a good source of protein. You can add them to different meals such as soups, stews or chili. Combining beans with rice is another option. Health Benefits Of Parsley Parsley makes food taste awesome and is also good for you. It helps in preventing halitosis, fighting diabetes, promoting bone health, boosting immune system, serving as a natural antibiotic, keeping the heart healthy and detoxifying the body. Other benefits includes fighting arthritis, whitening skin and giving clearer complexion and promoting healthy hair. Health Benefits Of Lemons Good in drinks and marinating. A good source of vitamin C and of flavonoids, or antioxidants, which are thought to boost health and wellbeing in several ways. Lemons may lower the risk of a stroke , maintains very healthy blood pressure. Health Benefits Of Carrots Not only do they taste good but they also do a good job of keeping the body healthy . They may prevents heart disease, lower blood pressure and boost immunity. Helps in digestion, good for the eyes and improves oral health. Health Benefits Of Celery May reduce inflammation, cholesterol and blood pressure. High in fibre, they may assist with weight loss, bloating and fight infection. Health Benefits Of The Potato Help prevent heart disease and may assist with kidney stones.

INGREDIENTS 2 tbsp olive oil

1 large onion, diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

3 medium carrots, diced

3 stalks celery, diced

2 medium potatoes, peeled and diced

2 tsp Italian seasoning

4 cups vegetable broth + 1 cup water

2 can diced tomatoes

1 cup corn (I used thawed from frozen)

1 can kidney beans, drained and rinsed (optional)

1 bay leaf

¼ cup parsley, chopped

1 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice, more to taste

1½ tsp kosher salt, more to taste

Freshly ground black pepper

INSTRUCTIONS

Heat oil in a large stockpot or dutch oven over medium-low heat.

Once hot, add onion, garlic and a teaspoon of kosher salt and

cook about 8 minutes. Add carrots, celery, potatoes and cook for

5 more minutes, stirring often. Add Italian seasoning and cook for

one more minute.

Add broth, water, tomatoes, corn, beans, bay leaf, and several

grinds of pepper. Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat to low

and simmer, covered until the vegetables are tender, about 35

minutes.

Remove from heat and stir in parsley and lemon juice. Remove

bay leaf and season to taste with salt (don't be shy, I added lots of

salt!) and pepper. Serve hot with crusty bread.

Q: How you make gold soup? A: With 22 carrots. Q: When is rabbit soup not good? A: When there's a hare in it.

A Step Back In Time With The Historical Society.

September 27 1933 Commemoration Gala Pyramid’s Greatest night. The Pyramid Hill Agricultural Society Ball was held in the Co-op before the fittings were in place. The attendance exceeded 800, of whom 747 paid for admission, many others attended as guests, performers or helpers. Not a few car loads came along after the booking office had closed at half past eleven, some having been bogged en route on our roads so contemptuously described as the B and D highway to Muddyvale. Never mind, they got here, and in for nothing, and enjoyed themselves as well as anybody. The door takings amounted to £75 14/6. The wisdom of excluding children is now recognised, if it was not so before. Undoubtedly the great magnet of attraction as far as the hundreds of visitors were concerned was the magnificent Co-op. building itself, about which so much is heard elsewhere. And they were not disappointed at its brilliant splendor internally and externally, although only in a partial state of completion. Who can ever forget that first great night of 160 feet floodlight-ed plate-glass widow display, the illuminated forty foot four faced clock tower and the hum and hustle of more than two hundred motor cars—a little bit of city life and gay lights transferred from the city to the bush ! But remembering that the official opening is to follow, let us not steal the official thunder, and reserve our remarks about our palatial structure until "the ribbon is cut." 20 December 1933 The Building There is little need on our part to describe the building, which is illustrated in today's issue, also a block of the structure that was destroyed by fire a year ago. The main external features are clearly depicted —the tiled roof, clock tower with illuminated dials at night, arcaded verandah beneath which is upwards of 160 feet of plate glass display and island windows. The internal fittings are in keeping with the noble pile, even to telephonic communication with the various store departments. The appoint-ments are all of the: latest and the wide range of goods can be displayed to best advantage. Just now with its Xmas setting – the whole presents an entrancing picture, and compares well with any modern city emporium. It'1 is, something which Pyramid can be, and undoubtedly is, proud of. The architects were Messrs Leith (Melbourne) and Thurston (Kerang) in conjunction, and Mr M. J Fabaritis (Preston) was the builder. Your loyalty was very finely demonstrated during the till months after the fire, which period terminated a most successful year, showing a profit of just over £2,500. Quite a lot of discussion centred on the distribution of this amount, and eventually your directors decided that, although the fine loyalty shown by shareholders in doing practically all their business with our store under very difficult conditions, really warranted a bonus on purchases according to the rules of the society, it would perhaps be wiser to carry forward the surplus and avoid overdrawing on the bank. Your directors now have pleasure in handing over to you, as shareholders this splendidly equipped new building into which has now been placed carefully selected up-to-date new stock our full range of goods, displayed in a way which will make your selection so much easier and more satisfactory, and the prices are right. Those directors who have visited the Melbourne warehouses in company with your manager, can testify to his keenness in buying Warehousemen, in effect, say, "Here comes Opie again, a man who knows what he wants and makes a quick selection, but is a terror on cut prices. However, he is a good chap and always pays cash, so it is worthwhile to meet him, and good luck go with him .

Community Health Celebration

Join us for morning tea on Wednesday 15th August at 10am at The Northern District Community Health Clinic, 12 Victoria Street Pyramid Hill. At this event, we will be calling on the next Victorian government to: Recognise: • Community Health has the capacity to reach ever Victorian. • Truly integrated care • Community Health can help with big issues eg avoid/reduce hospitalisations Local issues: • Rural areas don’t have the population to support current economic model of funding- thus we are becoming marginalised compared to our city/regional centres. • Outreach does not work - place based is more cost effective.

Please RSVP by Friday 10th August by calling 03 5451 0200

Netball Report MINIS The mini Pups were off to a slow start this morning as a result of Calivil’s strong pressure but by half time, the girls had found their feet again and fought back, giving 110%. It was an extremely even match, with great shooting from both sides. The Pups kept their heads up throughout the whole match. Spectacular work girls! Star of the day was Isabelle. 15&U It was a cold, cloudy day at Mitchell Park and the girls had a rocking start to the match. With one of their players out on injury, the girls adjusted well. One of the minis, Isabelle stepped up and did an amazing job. With some great passes and quick foot work, the Doggies created a great lead and maintained it throughout the entire match. Well done girls and congratulations to Imogen Broad, Kara Farrell and Brianna Stevens for getting best on. Pyramid Hill 66 defeated Calivil 13. 17&U The under 17’s girls knew they were up for a tough battle against Calivil. With the captain out and 3 under 15’s girls stepping up, it got harder. The first quarter was tough, but the Doggies had some amazing intercepts. Coach Karlee said ‘Let’s do something different’ and what was said, was done. The second quarter was the hardest but the coach and captain’s wise words inspired the Doggies and helped them to push out the last half with their heads held high. Next week girls! Well done to Jordann Broad and Kara Farrell for an awesome game. Pyramid Hill 27 defeated by Calivil 71. C RESERVE The Ressie girls were off to a fantastic start - playing incredibly hard and finished the first quarter 7 goals in front. The motivated defence end worked brilliantly together by creating many turnovers that were then executed beautifully through the middle court by Loz G, Loz B and Julez towards the “unstoppable duo” Kate and Mik inside the goal ring. Consistent and high flying intercepts were key for the best on, Em Murfitt.. Bring on next week Ressies! Pyramid Hill 36 defeated Calivil 18. C GRADE Coming into the game, the girls knew they could come close this week. After a great first quarter, the Doggies were only 1 goal down. Going into a slow second quarter, the girls lost momentum, but credit goes to the girls who didn’t give up and still gave 110%. They came back with lots of pressure right down the court and defence were fantastic. Great game Doggies, but bad luck! Best on was awarded to Casey Woodbine. Pyramid Hill 19 defeated by Calivil 26. B GRADE The girls were faced with a determined Calivil side right from the start and found themselves having to fight back every quarter. The Doggies were down at every break, but with Calivil’s accurate shooting, it was difficult to get a lead. At half time, there was a switch around among the red, white and blue which saw the rest of the game being fought out very hard to bring the final score back within reach. Best on was awarded to … Pyramid Hill 32 defeated by Calivil 40. A GRADE The girls took the court determined to get a win over Calivil to help cement their finals position. The first quarter started slow, but once the girls found their feet they settled in and fought back from being 7 goals down to only 2 at quarter time. Coming into the second quarter, the Doggies continued their hard work, creating many turnovers to only trail behind Calivil by half time. The last half of the match was a nail biter, as the Doggies fought extremely hard to come from 7 goals down to only 3 down - making Calivil nervous. Unfortunately, the girls went down, but not without making the opposition work for it. Best on was Em Prout. Pyramid Hill 35 defeated by Calivil 40.

Football Report As we move closer to the pointy end of the season 3 wins from 3 is always a welcome result. The Under 18's & Reserves both recorded convincing wins while the Senior match was as breath taking as the wind that swirled all day. A nerve racking final few minutes, where the ball was spending far too much time in Calivil's forward line, eventually saw us come home with a 1 point win when the final siren sounded. Phew......you needed nerves of steel to watch that!

Under 18 The boys were slow to get out of the blocks in our Round 16 clash with Calivil United. We were quite fumbly & the Demons put on some great pressure to stop our ball movement. As the game progressed we gradually got better & were able to produce some smooth passages of play.

Matt Farrell was exceptional in the middle & also spent some time up forward, whilst Zac Dingwall racked up numerous disposals across the half back line. We increased the margin at every break, eventually running out 99 point victors. We now look forward to a big clash with the MGYCW Eagles. Final Scores: Pyramid Hill 17.11.113 defeated Calivil 2.2.14 Goals: M. Farrell 4, M. Swiney 3, E. Caburnay 2, J. Caburnay 1, J. Coad 1, A. Cunningham 1, M. Gunther 1, B. Moon 1, J. Sawyer 1, D. Stephens 1, Z. Dingwall 1.

Brett Hercus Transport Award: M. Farrell. Millers Ag Supplies Award: Z. Dingwall. Pyramid Bakery Cafe Award: L. Dillon. Special Award: M. Gunther. Others: B. Moon, J. Caburnay, K. Shelley, E. Caburnay, M. Swiney.

Reserves The Reserves have hit some good form in past weeks & were up against bottom of the ladder side Calivil. The windy conditions proved challenging but the boys were up for the challenge playing good clean footy, winning the game by 15 goals.

Special mentions for the game were Dylan "the cult hero" Tonkin who would of had close to 60 possessions dominating the mid field, Troy "Mr Afl" played another sensational game putting on the package clinic, Dave "the raging bull" Mann proves that no mere mortal can tackle him.

The ned award went Jack "party boy" Hicmott who came back into the side hungry putting on a clinic with his pace, skill and his universal party antics. A win today has locked in 2nd spot with the boys pumped for finals footy. #upthe2's #2'saroundthe1's #uptheneds

Final Scores: Pyramid Hill 17.13.115 defeated Calivil 2.4.16

Goals: N. Moon 3, K. Kerrison 3, J. Ritchie 2, T. Woolhouse 2, M. Scott 1, D. Mann 1, C. Driscoll 1, R. James 1, B. Embury 1, J. Coates 1, B. Fawcett 1.

Pony Award: D. Tonkin. Egan Taylor Award: J. Hickmott. National Hotel Award: T. Woolhouse. Victoria Hotel Award: D. Mann. Others: R. James, M. Moon, M. Scott.

Seniors The equation was simple for the boys; a win & we lock in a Top 3 spot. Against the breeze in the first term our pressure was high early but the Demons got an early jump and were able to create a 21 point buffer at quarter time. We dominat-ed play in the second quarter but just couldn’t quite execute in front of goal, howev-er we did take a 2 point lead into the main break as we kicked four goals to one.

The premiership quarter would have a huge baring on the game and we held up beautifully against the breeze, maintaining possession of the footy & ensuring the Demons couldn’t get a run. We trailed by 11 points with one quarter to play. It was a long, nerve-racking 30 minutes as both sides pressure significantly increased, we jumped ahead at the twenty minute mark & were able to fight, scrap and hold on for a 1 point victory & cement 3rd spot. Adrian Holland was brilliant in the ruck in a great team performance! Final Scores: Pyramid Hill 9.9.63 defeated Calivil 9.8.62

Goals: M. Cheeseman 4, T. Sala 3, B. Dalton 1, M. Klein-Breteler 1.

Egan Taylor Award: A. Holland. Victoria Hotel Award: A. Dobby. National Hotel Award: T. Sala. Others: B. Micevski, M. Cheeseman, Gav James, S. Gunther, M. Bateman.
