    Commemoration

Purification of Mary and presentation of our LordForty days after the birth of Christ the church marks the day Maryand Joseph presented him in the temple in accordance with Jewishlaw. Mary also humbly submitted to Jewish law to be purified afterchildbirth. There in the temple, a prophet named Anna began tospeak of the redemption of Israel when she saw the young child.Simeon also greeted Mary and Joseph. He responded to the presenceof the consolation of Israel in this child with the words of the Nuncdimittis, the canticle that begins Now, Lord, you let your servant goin peace. His song described Jesus as a light for the nations.

Because of the link between Jesus as the light for the nations, and

because an old reading for this festival contains a line from theprophet Zephaniah, I will search Jerusalem with candles, the day isalso known as Candlemas, a day when traditionally candles areblessed for the coming year.

A READING FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORDFOURTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY

FORMULA OF CONCORD, SOLID DECLARATIONARTICLE II: FREE WILL

Out of His immense goodness and mercy, God provides for thepublic preaching of His divine eternal Law and His wonderfulplan for our redemption, that of the holy, only saving Gospel ofHis eternal Son, our only Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ. Goddesires to call people to eternal salvation. He desires to drawthem to Himself and convert, regenerate, and sanctify them.

For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God

through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what wepreach to save those who believe. (1 Cor. 1:21)

[Peter] will tell you what you must do. (Acts 10:6)

Faith comes from the preaching and preaching through theWord of Christ (Romans 10:17 Luther).

Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.. I do not askfor these only, but also for those who will believe in Me throughtheir word. (John 17:17-20)

The eternal Father calls down from heaven about His dear Sonand about all who preach repentance and forgiveness of sins inHis name, "Listen to Him" (Matthew 17:5).

All who want to be saved ought to listen to thispreaching. For the preaching and hearing of

God's Word are the Holy Spirit's instruments.

By, with, and through these instruments the

Spirit desires to work effectively, to convertpeople to God, and to work in them. [Philippians

    2:13]. (paragraphs 50-52)
