DATES FOR DECEMBER
David Graham Headteacher
We are fast approaching the Christmas break and the year is flying by. The term has been packed with some
amazing sporting results across the year groups and we are fast becoming one of the top sports schools in the town and beyond. My thanks go to all the students who are training and performing to such a high standard to
ensure successes continue to arrive at the door of Putteridge High School. Of course, all this could not be done without a tremendously committed PE team who provide the students with such a wide variety of
sporting opportunities.
I am delighted to announce Ms C Montague, one of our English Teachers, has recently won the Teacher of the Year Award at an event organised by Luton Borough Council. We are all very proud of her well deserved
achievement.
In exceptional circumstances it may be necessary to close the school during normal hours. In these instances,
i.e. due to severe weather conditions, we shall inform parents via our web-site and school Facebook page. In addition, we will endeavour to contact you by e-mail/text.
Parents’ Evenings are such important evenings for parents and staff. Each year group has just the one evening
per year. Please make sure you attend and book your appointments on-line well in advance. To date we have had our Year 11 evening and this was well attended. Thank you to everyone who made it such a positive
event. The dates of the remaining evenings are as follows:
Year 9: Thursday 15th March 2018
Year 8: Thursday 22nd February 2018
Year 7: Thursday 25th January 2018
At the end of the school day we are still experiencing high levels of congestion outside the front of the school.
Please endeavour to park a reasonable distance away from the school to avoid unnecessary traffic at all times. In addition, please remind students that they are not to walk across either the staff or recreation car park at
any time.
It is through good attendance that students maximise their full potential, enhancing their life chances for the
future. Missing school means missing out on learning and this can have an impact on a child’s development
and attainment. There is a strong statistical link between attendance and attainment. The law states that children of statutory school age, who are on roll at a school or academy, must attend regularly and punctually.
Regular attendance is important because it is the best way of ensuring children make the most of the educational opportunities available to them. If your child is unwell or unable to attend school, please call the
school on 01582 415791 and choose Option 1 by 8.30am on each day of absence.
As always, thank you for your on-going support.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL CATERING TEAM
The catering staff have on several occasions accommodated children with lunch when
they have forgotten their money or there is none on the account. We are sure
everybody understands that although this will continue there is a limit to how much
any child can go “over-drawn”. The catering team do not wish to turn any child away
but once a child reaches their limit they cannot be served a lunch. We know nearly all
our parents prioritise lunches for their children. However, there is a tiny minority that
have approached their limit. Please ensure the debts are cleared and no child/member
of staff is left in an embarrassing position. This matter can be discussed by contacting
Mr Brown at the school.

Hazel Line, Head of Languages
“It was a very beneficial evening and it gave me an insight on how languages

languages in University takes on a wide variety of subjects too.”
Jaden Grizzell
“It gave me a broader insight into studying Modern Foreign Languages at University and I realised that studying a

Mandarin that was exceptional and taught me that learning languages is not as hard as common perception.”
Ruth Judson
“I am so glad I had the opportunity to attend this event. Throughout the whole evening I
received lots of beneficial information that has allowed me to further appreciate the many marvels of learning and knowing another

“This was a very valuable experience as it gave me an insight into University

GEOGRAPHY FIELD VISIT
Forty Year 8 students spent the day at Amersham Field Centre on Tuesday 28th November. The students had a great day comparing the climate of different types of woodland. They learnt how to create a hypothesis, carry out fieldwork and reach a conclusion. The students had a great day and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. As we left the centre the boys said the trip was 'splendid' and that the best part about it was 'everything'.
"It has been an amazing adventure with great scenery." Ummaiya Hussain. “It was cold and muddy. I learnt what a microclimate is, and how to measure this with equipment such as an anemometer to measure wind speed". Freya Wiseman

LET’S CELEBRATE
TEACHER OF THE YEAR AWARD
First, Ms Montague’s love of her subject and her excellent subject knowledge are her top qualities. Ms Montague’s passion and drive is the reason that so many children thrive in her lessons. Her outstanding subject knowledge matters, not only because at the top of the ability range she is able to stretch her students, but also because for those that struggle with reading and writing she is still able to interest and motivate these students because she uses every tool possible to ignite the fire within every child that she encounters.
Secondly, her charismatic personality and her ability to be able to control a class is another reason Ms Montague’s lessons are so memorable. She is also a very hard working teacher, who puts a huge amount of effort into preparing her lessons, marking work and giving extra time to children who need it. She goes above and beyond giving up her free time to prepare students for their GCSEs and also holds AS and A level classes to ensure all students can achieve their full potential.
As well as this, Ms Montague is passionate about her school and is keen for all the students to do well. She is highly organised, keeps track of individuals and ensures she is fully prepared for any eventuality.
Moreover, she delivers a lesson with pace and interest and her marking standards are remarkable making her the ‘go to’ person when it comes to seeing excellence in a classroom.
Finally, her high expectations of her students is her best characteristic of all, as her determination to ensure that every student will master her subject is what sets her aside from others. This atti-tude is what sets the scene for everything which follows in her classroom. She is an excellent teacher because she believes that it is the students’ effort and the teaching quality which deter-mine how well a child does, not the ability of the child.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH BRONZE AWARD
NATIONAL ENTERPRISE WEEK
As a part of National Enterprise Week, we gave our budding young entrepreneurs in Year 10 the opportunity to demonstrate their entrepreneurial flair. The Year 10 pupils have fundraised for three local charities; Luton Foodbank, Keech Hospice and FOBE. The three Year 10 Business classes sold a range of items in the hall, from cakes to crackers, on Thursday, 16th November. This was a completely pupil led initiative where they invested their own time and money into making the stalls event a success. The total raised was £550 which will be split amongst the charities. Each class will be presenting a cheque in assembly to their respective charities, this will take place within the next two weeks. I would just like to thank all the pupils and staff, for contributing and supporting the event. The pupils were absolutely fantastic throughout the day and their hard-earned money will make a huge difference to those in need.
