    OTTAWA This years Putnam CountyFair, June 18-23, will offer many new thingsincluding an elephant exhibit, jungle pet-ting zoo and comedy entertainment alongwith the return of popular events such asthe combine derby and war wrestling.

    This years fair is offering more excite-ment than ever, said Fair Board presidentDon Verhoff.

    New this year is the Elephant Encounterstaged in a tropical setting. Kids of all ages

    will be in for a ton of fun excitement asthey get up close and personal with a 9,000pound monstrosity of an animal. ElephantEncounter is an educational and entertain-ing experience for the entire family. Corais a 44-year-old Asian elephant, weighting9,000 pounds, while Shannon, the 17-year-old African elephant weights 4,500 pounds.The elephants will have shows daily dur-ing the Putnam County Fair.

    One-of-a-kind animals will also be at theJungle Island Petting Zoo. Exotic crea-tures of all species will be at this specialzoo. You can observe, pet and feed these

    unique creature at your leisure. Young andold alike will get hands on exposure withanimals usually only seen on television orin distant zoo enclosure. Now you see and

    touch the cute and cuddly baby animals.You can even help bottle feed them or getyour picture taken as a memento.

    You wont want to miss the Caboodlestop-pers as they present their show three timesdaily. This is an energy-packed comedyevent for the whole family including aclose knit, talented family with a pas-sion for great entertainment. Their showsinclude everything from celebrity imper-sonations, choreographed dance routinesand hilarious original comedy skits to theultimate Hip Hop Dance Off. Children willget the chance to be stars of the show bydressing up as pirates, surfers, or cowboys

    while rocking out to their favorite songs.War wrestling is coming back to town

    during the Action at The Arches on June22 and June 23 at the fair. Other action atthe arches will include Racing Reviewcars on display, the Driverama vehicleshowcase, and antique tractor show.

    Nashville Crush, Polly Mae, Bekah Brad-ley and more will bring good tunes and gettimes to the Entertainment tent.

    All new fireworks will punctuate thefair with their low-profile, highly dynamicillustrious illumination. These fireworksare only visible on the fairgrounds.

    Although the demolition derby is onlyone night this year it will include five dif-ferent classes of competition including 80or newer vehicles, mini cars, stock cars,

    mini vans and lawn mowers.This years event will be kicked off on

    7 p.m., Saturday, June 16, when the fair

    will host their traditional Putnam CountyFair parade from SR65 down Main Street,Ottawa, to the fairgrounds.

    The excitement at the grandstand starts offMonday with the Veterans tribute. Local Ameri-can Legion and VFW Posts take part in this tribute

    to all of our veterans. Shortly after the tribute thejunior fair 2012 queen and king will be selectedfollowed by the popular marching band spectacu-lar featuring Putnam County bands.

    The entertainment continues on Tuesday andWednesday with harness racing. On Thursday go-kart fans can enjoy go-kart racing at the PutnamSpeedpark in the grandstand infield.

    Friday at the grandstand will be an action-packed evening of figure racing, lawn mowerdemolition derby and the truck derby.

    Saturday the action continues with the lawnmower races with the day concluding withanother lawn mower demo derby and the everpopular car demo derby. The evening will con-clude with a fireworks display only visible fromwithin the fairgrounds.

    Music, science and Ronald McDonald coming to Entertainment tentThe Entertainment Tent not only pro-

    vides a place to sit down in the shade, it

    also provides a wide variety of entertain-ment for the entire family.Ragtime Rick and the Chefs of Dixie-

    land is a 7-piece Traditional Jazz Bandsure to make you smile when theyentertain on Monday. The musical enter-tainment will continue when the NewOutlook Bluegrass Band performs in theafternoon and evening.

    The Educational Service Center willoffer numerous science, technology,engineering and mathematics entertain-ment for children in the entertainment

    tent on Tuesday, Kids day. The activitiesfor children continue in the afternoonwhen Children Choosing Christ hosts adinosaur dig. The afternoon of entertain-ment at the tent will conclude with theLittle Mister and Miss Putnam CountyFair.

    Wednesday afternoon the tent will befilled with dancers as performers fromsix area dance studios show off theirtalent. This is the first Annual DanceSpectacular at the fair and will fea-ture The Dance Center, Pams School of

    The 2012 Putnam County Fair willsoon be here and that means the 4-Hand FFA junior fair livestock sales areapproaching. The Jr. Fair livestock salesconsist of selling livestock projectscompleted by 4-H and FFA youth of Put-nam County. The youth have purchased,cared for and shown the animals in com-petition at the fair.

    The small animal sale will be held onThursday, June 21 at 9:00 AM at the mainshow arena on the fairgrounds. 4-H andFFA projects sold will be the poultry, rab-bits, sheep & goats.

    The large animal sale will be held on

    Friday, June 22 at 8:30 AM at the mainshow arena on the fairgrounds. 4-H andFFA projects sold will be the gallon ofmilk, steers, hogs & feeder calves.

    Many Putnam County businesses havemade it a tradition to support the Jr. Fairlivestock sales. There are approximately

    400 livestock projects sold each year andthey average approximately $210.00 persale. All businesses buying animals at thecounty fair are recognized by having theirnames posted in the fair book and beinglisted in the newspaper. Champion andreserve champion projects usually sell formore and include a picture of the project,exhibitor and buyer in the newspaper.

    Local businesses that have tradition-ally supported the Jr. Fair sales havereceived reminders in the mail. If anindividual or business is interested inparticipating in the Jr. Fair sales for thefirst time they are encouraged to call the

    Putnam County Extension Office at 523-6294 or the Sr. Fair Board at 523-4628 formore information.

    The Jr. Fair sales are conducted bylocal volunteers. All of the auctioneers,ring men and clerks donate their timeand energy to make the sales successful.
