Palm Sunday – Day 1

Jesus Rides in on a Donkey

As they all approached Jerusalem, they came to Bethphage. It was on the Mount of Olives. Jesus sent out two

disciples. He said to them, “Go to the village ahead of you. As soon as you get there, you will find a donkey

tied up. Her colt will be with her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that

the Lord needs them. The owner will send them right away.”

This took place so that what was spoken through the prophet would come true. It says,

“Say to the city of Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you.

He is gentle and riding on a donkey. He is riding on a donkey’s colt.’”

The disciples went and did what Jesus told them to do. They brought the donkey and the colt. They placed

their coats on them. Then Jesus sat on the coats.

SAY: 500 years before this, a man named Zachariah said that “a king would come….gentle and riding on a donkey.” Jesus rode on this stinky, mean donkey so that the people would recognize that he was the man whom Zachariah had been talking about.

Does anyone know what a prophesy is? (a prediction about what is going to happen in the future.)

SAY: We just read the words of a man named Zechariah from over 500 years ago, ““Say to the city of Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you. He is gentle and riding on a donkey. He is riding on a donkey’s colt.’”

After hearing these words, why do you think Jesus chose to ride on the donkey? (So that people would realize he is king who was coming to fulfill the prophesies).

The People Praise Jesus

A large crowd had come for the Feast of Passover and had heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem.

They took branches from palm trees and went out to meet him. They lined the streets with their coats and the

palm branches. Then they waved palm branches and they shouted,

“Hosanna!” Which is a shout that means, “Save us! Please!”

They also shouted, “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Blessed is the King of Israel!”

The Pharisees are Angry

Not long before this Jesus had raised a man named Lazarus from the dead. A crowd had been with Jesus

when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead. This crowd continued to tell everyone

about what had happened. Many people went out to meet Jesus because they had heard that he had done

this amazing miracle.

The other church leaders, the Pharisees didn’t like this, so they said to one another, “This isn’t good. Look how

the whole world is following him!” From that day on they made plans to kill Jesus.

Maundy Thursday – Day 4

The Last Supper

Peter and John were sent to prepare for the Passover meal.

When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles took their places at the table. He said to them, “I have really looked

forward to eating this Passover meal with you. I wanted to do this before I suffer.

Then Jesus took bread. He gave thanks and broke it. He handed it to them and said, “This is my body. It is given for you.

Every time you eat it, do it in memory of me.”

In the same way, after the supper he took the cup. He said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. It is poured out

for you.

Then Jesus said, “Someone here is going to hand me over to my enemies. His hand is with mine on the table. The Son of

Man will go to his death, just as God has already decided. But how terrible it will be for the one who hands him over!”

The apostles began to ask each other about this. They wondered which one of them would do it.

Jesus is Betrayed

One of the Twelve went to the chief priests. His name was Judas Iscariot. He asked, “What will you give me if I

hand Jesus over to you?” So they counted out 30 silver coins for him. From then on, Judas watched for the

right time to hand Jesus over to them.

After the Passover dinner, Jesus went with his disciples into the garden of Gethsemane to pray. He prayed,

“Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not

mine.” Then an angel from heaven appeared and strengthened him.

Then a crowd approached, led by Judas, the betrayer. Judas walked over to Jesus to greet him with a kiss.

Jesus said, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?”

So the guards arrested Jesus and led him to the high priest’s home.

Maundy Thursday – Day 6 Peter Denys Jesus

Peter had told Jesus that he would always fight to protect him.

At the Passover dinner Jesus said to Peter, “Peter, you will say three times that you don’t know me. And you will do it before the rooster crows today.”

Later, after the man arrested Jesus and led him away, Peter followed from far away. There was a fire in the courtyard and Peter sat down by it.

A female servant saw him sitting there in the firelight. She looked closely at him. Then she said, “This man was with Jesus.”

But Peter said he had not been with him. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.

A little later someone else saw Peter. “You also are one of them,” he said.

“No,” Peter replied. “I’m not!”

About an hour later, another person spoke up. “This fellow must have been with Jesus,” he said. “He is from Galilee.”

Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!”

Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. The Lord turned and looked right at Peter. Then Peter remembered what the Lord had spoken to him. “The rooster will crow today,” Jesus had said. “Before it does, you will say three times that you don’t know me.” Peter went outside. He broke down and sobbed.

Jesus’ Trial

The governor, Pontius Pilate, was in charge of Jesus trial. He found nothing wrong with Jesus but the people kept yelling,

“Crucify him!”

“Why?” Pilate demanded. “What crime has he committed?”

But the mob roared even louder, “Crucify him!”

Pilate saw that he wasn’t getting anywhere and that a riot was developing. So he sent for a bowl of water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood. The responsibility is yours!”

And all the people yelled back, “We will take responsibility for his death—we and our children!”

So Pilate turned Jesus over to the Roman soldiers to be crucified.

Some of the governor’s soldiers took Jesus. They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him. They wove thorn branches into a crown and put it on his head, and they placed a reed stick in his right hand as a scepter. Then they knelt before him in mockery and taunted, “Hail! King of the Jews!” And they spit on him and grabbed the stick and struck him on the head with it. When they were finally tired of mocking him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him again. Then they led him away to be crucified.

A trial is a place where criminals go to decide if they really committed the crime or not. Who was on trial? (Jesus)

What is a trial? (Something that decides if a person is innocent or guilty)

Had he done anything wrong? (no) Why was Jesus on trial? (Because the Pharisees were jealous of him. NOT because he had done anything wrong.

Pilate was in charge and he knew Jesus hadn’t done anything wrong, but what did the people keep yelling? (Crucify him – Crucify him!)

Pilate knew Jesus had not done anything wrong. Why did he still allow him to be put to death? (Because the people pressured him to do it)

Say: Crucify means to kill someone by hanging them on the cross.

Do you know what it means to crucify a person? (To kill them by hanging them on a cross)

The soldiers did things to mock or make fun of Jesus. How did they make fun of him? (Dressed him like a king, gave him a crown of thorns, spit on him.)

Good Friday – Day 8

Jesus is Crucified

So they took Jesus away. Carrying the cross on his injured body, they took him to the place called Place of the Skull, or Golgotha. There they nailed him to the cross. Two others were crucified with him, one on either side, with Jesus between them. Pilate posted a sign on the cross that read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.”

Standing near the cross was Jesus’ mother. When Jesus saw his mother standing there beside the disciple John, he said to her, “Dear woman, here is your son.” And he said to this disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from then on this disciple took her into his home.

Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips. When Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and died.

3K – 1st Grade 2nd Grade – 6th Grade

Dying on a cross was a punishment that was giving to the worst criminals. Two other men were also put on a cross when Jesus was. What kind of people do you think they were? (Bad criminals)

Two other people also were crucified on the cross along with Jesus. What kind of people do you think they were? (Criminals)

Was Jesus a criminal? (No) Say: Crucifixion was the type of punishment given to the WORST criminals.

We said before that Jesus had amazing powers because he was also true God. If he didn’t do anything wrong, why did he allow himself to be put on the cross? (To take away OUR sins)

But Jesus was perfect, not only was he not a criminal but he had never even sinned. So, why was Jesus on the cross? ( He chose to be there so that he could save us)

Say: After Jesus had taken a drink he said, “It is finished”. When he said this he meant that had finished the job his father had sent him to do. He had died to take away the sins of the world.

After Jesus had taken a drink he said, “It is finished”. What did he mean by this? (The job he was sent by his father to do, take away the sins of the entire world, was finished)

Does this include Adam and Eve? Does this include us? Does this include everybody that ever will live?

Who does this include? (All people that have ever lived or ever will live)

If Jesus died to save all people, why won’t everyone be in heaven? (Some people choose not to believe in Jesus as their Savior)

Good Friday – Day 9

Jesus is Buried

Afterward Joseph of Arimathea, who had been a secret disciple of Jesus (because he feared the Jewish leaders), asked

Pilate for permission to take down Jesus’ body. When Pilate gave permission, Joseph came and took the body away.

With him came Nicodemus, the man who had come to Jesus at night. He brought about seventy-five pounds[a] of

perfumed ointment made from myrrh and aloes. Following Jewish burial custom, they wrapped Jesus’ body with the

spices in long sheets of linen cloth. The place of crucifixion was near a garden, where there was a new tomb, never used

before. And so, because it was the day of preparation for the Jewish Passover and since the tomb was close at hand,

they laid Jesus there.

The Ladies Go to the Tomb

The Sabbath day ended. Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices. They were going to apply them to Jesus’ body.

Very early on the first day of the week, they were on their way to the tomb. It was just after sunrise. They asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance to the tomb?”

Then they looked up and saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away.

There was a powerful earthquake. An angel of the Lord came down from heaven. The angel went to the tomb.

He rolled back the stone and sat on it. His body shone like lightning. His clothes were as white as snow. The

guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

The angel said to the women, “Don’t be afraid. I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is

not here! He has risen, just as he said he would! Come and see the place where he was lying. Go quickly! Tell

his disciples, ‘He has risen from the dead. He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I

have told you.”

They came back from the tomb. They told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others.

The disciples were still talking about this when Jesus himself suddenly stood among them. He said, “May peace be with you!”

They were surprised and terrified. They thought they were seeing a ghost.

Jesus said to them, “Why are you troubled? Why do you have doubts in your minds? Look at my hands and my feet. It is really I! Touch me and see. A ghost does not have a body or bones. But you can see that I do.”

After he said that, he showed them his hands and feet. But they still did not believe it. They were amazed and filled with joy.

So Jesus asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”

They gave him a piece of cooked fish. He took it and ate it in front of them.

Jesus said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you. Everything written about me must happen. Everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms must come true.”

Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, “This is what is written. The Christ will suffer. He will rise from the dead on the third day. His followers will preach in his name. They will tell others to turn away from their sins and be forgiven. People from every nation will hear it, beginning at Jerusalem.
