All Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts, by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our Lord Jesus Christ said: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is

one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

All Lord have mercy upon us, and write all these Thy laws in our hearts, we beseech Thee.

¶Kyrie Eleison - Sung by the Choir

¶Collect for the Seventeenth Sunday After Trinity

Lord, we pray thee that thy grace may always prevent and follow us, and make us continually to be given to all good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

All Amen. ¶Old Testament Lesson

Put not forth thyself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men: For better it is that it be said unto thee, Come up hither; than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince whom thine eyes have seen. Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame. Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself; and discover not a secret to another: Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, and thine infamy turn not away. A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver. As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear. As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to them that send him: for he refresheth the soul of his masters. Whoso boasteth himself of a false gift is like clouds and wind without rain.

Proverbs 25 v.6-14

¶Gradual Psalm

Can. By the word of the Lord were the heavens made:

And all the hosts of them by the breath of his mouth.

Full He gathereth the waters of the sea togeather as it were upon an heap: And layeth up the deep as in a treasure-house.

Can. Let all the earth fear the Lord: Stand in awe of him all ye that dwell in the world.

Full For he spake and it was done: He commanded and it stood fast.

Can. The Lord bringeth the counsel of the heathen to naught: And maketh devices of the people to be of none effect and casteth out the counsels of prin-ces.

Full The counsel of the Lord shall endure for e-ver: And the thoughts of his heart from generation to genera-tion.

Can. Full

Blessed are the people whose God is the Lord Jehovah: And blessed are the folk that he hath chosen to him to be his inheri-tance.

Ps. 33 v. 6-12

¶New Testament Lesson

I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, with all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;

Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

Ephesians 4 v. 1-16

¶ Gradual - Sung by Choir

Blessed is the people whose God is the Lord: and blessed are the folk that he hath chosen to him to be his inheritance.

By the Word of the Lord were the heavens made and all the hosts of them by the breath of his mouth.

¶Gospel Acclamation

The right hand of the Lord bringeth mighty things to pass:

the right hand of the Lord hath the pre-eminence.

¶The Gospel

The Lord be with you: All And with thy spirit.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke: All Glory be to thee, O Lord. It came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees

to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him. And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy. And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day? And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go; And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day? And they could not answer him again to these things. And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them. When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him; And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room. But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee. For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

S Luke 14. v 1-11

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

All Praise be to thee, O Christ.

¶Intercessions

The Sub-deacon leads the congregation in the intercessions for the Church and the world. The response to each bidding is Hear our prayer. ¶Confession The Celebrant invites the people to confess their sins, kneeling: All Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things,

judge of all men: we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, by thought, word and deed, against thy divine majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us; the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honour and glory of thy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Celebrant pronounces the Absolution to which all respond: Amen.

¶Invitation to Communion

Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him that taketh away the sins of the world: blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb.

¶Communion Sentence - Sung by the Choir Promise unto the Lord your God, and keep it: all ye that are round about him bring presents unto him that ought to be feared.

He shall refrain the spirit of princes: and is wonderful among the kings of the earth.

¶Distribution of Communion Please come forward to kneel or stand if you are unable. The Church of England welcomes communicant members of all Churches who have been baptized with water in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, to receive Holy Communion in faith, hope and charity. During the Distribution of Communion, the Choir sing the following motet:

O hearken thou unto the voice of my calling, my king and my God: for unto thee will I make my prayer. My voice shalt thou hear betimes, O Lord; early in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.
