In the chapter titled "The Practice of Paying Attention", Taylor writes about what it takes to have reverence. At its simplest, reverence is just paying really really close attention to something that reminds us that we aren't God. Brown says, "Reverence stands in awe of something -- some- thing that dwarfs the self, that allows human beings to sense the full extent of our limits - so that we can begin to see one another more reverently as well." When is the last time you were in awe of something? I am in awe of the way this church steps up to care for people who are in a challenging situation. I'm reminded that family - whether biological or not -- is a deep source of love and life. I am in awe of the way the One Year Bible readings connect to what is hap- pening in my life so often. I'm reminded that the miracle of the Bible couldn't have been worked by anyone other than an omnipotent God. I am in awe of God's love for me. I'm reminded that God's love is bigger than my mistakes. I am in awe of the blessings I enjoy that I don't deserve. Again, God's love. Life can and should produce awe-inspiring moments for each one of us. The problem is, as Brown says, "Most of us move so quickly that our surroundings become no more than the blurred scenery we fly past on our way to some- where else. We pay attention to the speedometer, the wristwatch, the cell phone, the list of things to do, all of which feed our illusion that life is manage- able. Meanwhile, none of them meets the first criteria for reverence, which is to remind us that we are not gods." Reverence requires a willingness to take a detour. Moses was leading the Isra- elites "beyond the wilderness to Horeb", when an angel appeared to him in a burning bush. The text actually says, "I must turn aside and look at this great sight..." Moses had to take a detour to the place where he was awed by God's presence in a bush that was burning but not being consumed. How many times has your unwillingness to stop, take a detour, and look closely at something other than your planned destination kept you from be- ing awed by God? Can you, like me, admit the need to slow it down a bit so you don't miss what God wants you to see? Peace, Tom

Friends, I'm reading a book titled "An Altar in the World" by a pastor named Barbara Brown Taylor. In the chapter titled "The Practice of Paying Attention", Taylor writes about what it takes to have reverence. At its simplest, reverence is just paying really really close attention to something that reminds us that we aren't God. Brown says, "Reverence stands in awe of something -- some-thing that dwarfs the self, that allows human beings to sense the full extent of our limits - so that we can begin to see one another more reverently as well." When is the last time you were in awe of something? I am in awe of the way this church steps up to care for people who are in a challenging situation. I'm reminded that family - whether biological or not -- is a deep source of love and life. I am in awe of the way the One Year Bible readings connect to what is hap-pening in my life so often. The problem is, as Brown says, "Most of us move so quickly that our surroundings become no more than the blurred scenery we fly past on our way to some-where else. We pay attention to the speedometer, the wristwatch, the cell phone, the list of things to do, all of which feed our illusion that life is manage-able. Christmas is coming!

I know, you’re saying “it’s too soon, it’s not even Thanksgiving yet!” Just put Sunday, November 24th, from 11 AM to 2 PM on your calendar, and come help decorate the church for the Christmas season. We’ll get every-thing festive (it’s easy – we have pictures), then we’ll have lunch.

Another Shady Grove Tradition is the Family Christmas Tree. Every family at Shady Grove is invited to provide an ornament for this tree – a new one if you’ve never brought one before, or you can ‘freshen up’ one you gave years ago. Place them in the basket at the Connections Desk.

Blessings, Allison Meadows Fellowship Team Leader
