ABBOTT HEMATOLOGY INSTRUMENT DISMANTLING INSTRUCTIONS CELL-DYN RUBY

PURPOSE The EU EHS requirements include that all manufacturers must have published documentation for the dismantling and segregation of Environmental Hazardous Substances. These instructions are required to be accessible by third parties in order to separate and contain these substances. This will provide information on equipment characteristics relevant for the end of life treatment.

SCOPE This procedure describes the Dismantling Instructions and Safety requirements for handling the dismantling/destruction for CELL-DYN RUBY Instruments.

SAFETY All instruments and miscellaneous items internally in contact with human blood samples and controls are potentially biohazardous. All personnel involved in the handling of these materials must wear lab coats, disposable protective gloves, and safety glasses or face shields. These precautions must be followed whenever handling contaminated or potentially contaminated instruments.

CAUTION! Use care when performing decontamination and system dismantling activities to avoid cuts and scrapes from sharp edges, broken glass, or sharps.

GENERAL A. Safe Handling Practices

While working with potentially contaminated instruments: 1. Do not eat, drink, smoke, apply cosmetics or lip balm, or handle contact

lenses. 2. Avoid touching your face. Even though you are wearing gloves, touching

your eyes, nose, mouth, or personal protective equipment may cause contamination.

3. Protect any open wounds/cuts with bandages. Make sure that the gloves and lab coat (or protective covering) are covering any exposed skin on your arms. Check gloves for defects or holes before putting them on.

4. If a printed circuit board (PCB) exhibits signs of possible blood contamination and/or saline exposure, it should automatically be sprayed with appropriate disinfectant solution prior to handling.

B. Liquid Waste Collect waste decontamination solutions in approved waste collection container for removal to waste collection area. (Do not add bleach).

Accidental Exposures: A. These Systems are not screened for bloodborne pathogens. B. Persons exposed to biohazardous or potentially biohazardous materials should

take steps immediately to cleanse the affected area: 1. Eyes - rinse with water for 15 minutes. 2. Mouth - rinse with water. 3. Skin - wash the affected area with soap and water. Apply an antiseptic such as alcohol, providone, iodine, chlorhexidine, etc.

If you are exposed, follow your company's incident reporting procedures as necessary.

PROCEDURE 1. Verify unit is unplugged from AC outlet.

2. After Dismantling is complete, ensure all PCB’s are extracted from unit and chassis.

3. Discard PCB’s in accordance with local regulations.

4. Tools needed: Philips Head Screwdriver #1 and #2, Cutters, Needle Nose Pliers, Flat Head Screwdriver, Nut Driver 1/4 and 1/2, Allen Driver 3/32 and 7/64 and Open End Wrench 1/4.

Before dismantling, be aware of the following.

A. There is the potential that a sharp object is present behind the cover as illustrated, pages 3, 4 and 5 illustrates how to open/remove the cover and move the sharp object to a safe position.

B. Pull doors open from area indicated. Swing open left and right doors.

C. Slightly pull and lift center cover and remove from unit.

D. Ensure that the sharp object is positioned in the housing as illustrated. If necessary, lift the object at the area where illustrated until the sharp object is concealed into it’s housing.

E. Remove plate from the front of the unit. Ensure that the sharp object, where illustrated, is in its housing.

F. If necessary, carefully pull up knob until the sharp object is concealed into its housing.

1. Removing Left Front Cover and Right Front Cover: a. Remove cable from PCB on right side cover. Remove mounting hardware from the

PCB. Extract PCB from unit. b. Remove mounting hardware on the left and right front cover brackets, as illustrated,

and remove covers from unit.

2. Removing Covers from Front of Unit: a. Carefully pull out covers from the front of the unit as illustrated.

3. Removing Lower Cover: a. Remove mounting hardware from the lower cover as illustrated. b. Remove the lower cover from unit.

4. Left and Right side cover removal: a. Remove mounting hardware from the left side cover. Slide cover back toward the

rear of unit and remove left side covers. b. Remove mounting hardware from the right side cover. Slide cover back toward the

rear of unit and remove right side covers.

5. Top Cover removal: a. Remove mounting hardware and remove top cover.

6. Removing chassis from unit: a. Remove mounting hardware from the left and right sides of unit as illustrated. b. Loosen the mounting hardware as illustrated. Do not remove hardware at this time.

c. Remove all tubing that connects to the chassis. Remove mounting hardware.

d. Carefully slide out chassis. e. Disconnect/cut all cables connected to the chassis. f. Disconnect/cut all tubing connected to the chassis.

Note: Liquid may leak from the tubing. This is liquid waste, dispose of it appropriately.

g. Remove remaining hardware that has already been loosened in page 11. h. Remove remaining hardware that has already been loosened in page 11. i. Carefully lift and remove chassis from unit.

Caution: Be aware of heavy chassis when extracting.

7. Extracting PCB’s from Right Side of Unit: a. Unlock Chassis from unit. Slightly lift and open chassis. b. Disconnect all cables from the PCB. Carefully pull out PCB’s from the standoffs.

Extract PCB from unit. c. Disconnect all cables from the PCB’s. Carefully pull out PCB’s that secure the

standoffs. Extract PCB from unit.

8. Extracting PCB’s from Right Inner Side of Chassis: a. Unlock chassis to extract PCB’s from the inner section. b. Disconnect all cables from the PCB. Carefully pull out PCB’s from the mounting

standoffs. Extract PCB’s from unit. c. Unplug all cables connected to PCB’s. Remove all Mounting Hardware from the

inner section of the chassis that secures PCB’s. Extract PCB’s. One of these PCB’s holds a battery. See next step.

d. Remove battery on PCB where illustrated. e. Disconnect all cables from the PCB. Carefully pull out PCB’s from the standoffs.

Extract PCB from unit. See previous step.

f. Remove mounting hardware. Remove cables and remove cover as illustrated. g. Disconnect all cables from the back of the drives. Remove mounting hardware.

Extract drives from unit.

9. Extracting PCB’s from Unit: a. Disconnect all cables from PCB’s mounted on the inner right side of the unit. b. Carefully pull out PCB’s from the mounting standoffs. Extract PCB’s from unit.

10. Extracting PCB from unit: a. Disconnect cables and tubing. Remove mounting hardware as illustrated and extract

PCB inside of housing.

11. Extracting Chassis from Unit and Extracting PCB’s from Chassis: a. Disconnect all tubing connected to the chassis. Remove mounting hardware.

Slightly pull out chassis from the unit. Disconnect the cable that is plugged into the inner section of the chassis. Extract chassis from unit.

b. Disconnect all cables connected to PCB. Remove mounting hardware and extract PCB from chassis.

12. Removing Chassis from Unit and Extracting PCB from Chassis: a. Disconnect all tubing connected to the two chassis. Remove mounting hardware.

Slightly pull out the two chassis one by one from the unit. As you are pulling out the chassis, disconnect the cable that is plug into the inner section of the chassis. Extract chassis from unit.

b. Unlock PCB’s from plastic standoffs. Extract PCB’s from unit.

13. Removing Chassis from Unit and Extracting PCB from Chassis:

a. Remove plastic cover. b. Disconnect all cables from the PCB’s. Remove mounting hardware that secures the

PCB’s. Extract PCB’s from unit.

14. Extracting PCB from Unit:

a. Remove the knob from chassis as illustrated. b. Remove all tubing connected to the three disks. Slide out three disks from chassis.

c. Remove Mounting Hardware from the front of the unit. d. Carefully slide chassis in and out, then up from the top of the unit.

e. Disconnect all cables. Remove mounting hardware from plate to unlock plastic standoffs and extract PCB.

f. Remove mounting hardware from the chassis to access PCB. g. Loosen mounting hardware and pull out PCB from chassis.

h. Remove securing clamp from the shaft. i. Remove the bearing and plastic washer from the shaft. j. Remove securing clamp from the shaft. k. Remove mounting hardware and extract PCB from bracket.

15. Extracting PCB from unit: a. Remove cables from the PCB in the inner section of the unit as illustrated. Remove

mounting hardware and extract from unit. b. Remove cables from the PCB’s in the inner section of the unit as illustrated. Unlock

the PCB’s from the plastic standoffs and extract the PCB’s.

16. Extracting PCB’s from unit: a. Remove mounting hardware from the front of the unit as illustrated. Open the door

attached to the unit. b. Disconnect all cables connected to the PCB’s. Unlock the PCB’s from the plastic

standoffs as illustrated and extract PCB’s.

17. Extracting PCB’s from Unit: a. Disconnect all cables connected to PCB. Unlock plastic standoffs that secure the

PCB’s and extract PCB’s from unit. b. Unlock panel from unit. Slightly lift and open panel.

18. Extracting PCB’s from Unit:

a. Remove the securing screw from the bottom of the unit as illustrated. b. Carefully slide out chassis away from the unit. Disconnect all cables connected to

the chassis. Extract PCB’s from chassis.

a. Remove mounting hardware and extract PCB from the back of the unit.

20. Extracting PCB’s from unit: a. Disconnect cables from PCB’s located on the top of unit. Remove mounting

hardware and extract PCB from unit. b. Disconnect all cables from PCB. Unlock PCB’s from plastic standoffs and extract

PCB from unit.

c. Disconnect all cables. Remove mounting hardware that secures the plate to the unit and carefully lift chassis with plate out of unit.

d. Disconnect cables. Remove mounting hardware as illustrated and extract PCB as illustrated.
