Concept art offers the basis for media and gives the initial idea then can eventually be reworked, allowing for different moods and themes to be assessed before the final product. Concept art for games has changed drastically over the years and this is mainly down to the major advances in technology. Earlier forms of concept art for games were very restricted to a 2D perspective and lacked detail that would give realism to a game. A good example of this is the earlier Super Mario games. The Mario character himself was very rigid in shape and it was hard to tell from the player’s perspective whether he had facial features etc. These days’ games are planned a lot more carefully and thoroughly due to the more complex game Engines that have been created. Concept art is now created with a lot more detail; facial features, different perspectives as well as fluidity of textured environment are all taken into consideration, the idea of having a 3D world within a game opens up an array of endless opportunities and gives a Concept Artist a lot more room to work their magic. Obviously this would mean that a lot more work would be required, due to the fact that methods such as lighting would have to be researched in more depth; a concept artist would have to have an understanding of how shadows are created on different objects as well as people, due to the fact that shadows will be cast differently from different perspectives. For games, concept art is a visual form of planning; it allows developers to assess the graphical elements of their game so that they can later interpret the designs within the game engine. This is the process where many games can fall down, due to the fact that they may have created over ambitious designs that are hard to interpret within the game engine. This is the reason why it is important to assess the capabilities of the game engine before any designs are made, this not only saves time from being wasted but also gives a realistic stand point of the calibre of game that is possible to be created. A good example of a game with high quality graphics is fallout 3, realistic face expressions as well as some very high quality texturing, allows for more realistic emotions to be portrayed through the characters, players are then able to become emotionally attached and therefore the game becomes more gripping and thrilling to play. Overall concept art may be one of the earliest processes of games development but also proves to be one of the most important, techniques such as lighting, shading and even character modelling all begin with drawings; giving a visual representative of what is to be interpreted within the game its. As a result game developers can tweak and improve their game visually during these early stages, in preparation for the creation of a game with the most exiting graphics with a huge sense of realism, depending on the genre of game. http://onlyfreewallpaper.com/walls/spirit-breaker-vs- phantom-assassin-dota-2-artwork-other.jpg http://www.cyborgmatt.com/wp- content/uploads/2012/05/Dota2_GyrocopterConcept.j pg

Ideas on Concept Art

Concept art can be conveyed as a form of drawing and is purposely designed to represent an idea or

series of ideas for a variety of media such as; comic books, movies and even computer games.

Concept art offers the basis for media and gives the initial idea then can eventually be reworked,

allowing for different moods and themes to be assessed before the final product. Concept art for

games has changed drastically over the years and this is mainly down to the major advances in

technology. Earlier forms of concept art for games were very restricted to a 2D perspective and

lacked detail that would give realism to a game. A good example of this is the earlier Super Mario

games. The Mario character himself was very rigid in shape and it was hard to tell from the player’s

perspective whether he had facial features etc. These days’ games are planned a lot more carefully

and thoroughly due to the more complex game Engines that have been created. Concept art is now

created with a lot more detail; facial features, different perspectives as well as fluidity of textured

environment are all taken into consideration, the idea of having a 3D world within a game opens up

an array of endless opportunities and gives a Concept Artist a lot more room to work their magic.

Obviously this would mean that a lot more work would be required, due to the fact that methods

such as lighting would have to be researched in more depth; a concept artist would have to have an

understanding of how shadows are created on different objects as well as people, due to the fact

that shadows will be cast differently from different perspectives. For games, concept art is a visual

form of planning; it allows developers to assess the graphical elements of their game so that they

can later interpret the designs within the game engine. This is the process where many games can

fall down, due to the fact that they may have created over ambitious designs that are hard to

interpret within the game engine. This is the reason why it is important to assess the capabilities of

the game engine before any designs are made, this not only saves time from being wasted but also

gives a realistic stand point of the calibre of game that is possible to be created. A good example of a

game with high quality graphics is fallout 3, realistic face expressions as well as some very high

quality texturing, allows for more realistic emotions to be portrayed through the characters, players

are then able to become emotionally attached and therefore the game becomes more gripping and

thrilling to play. Overall concept art may be one of the earliest processes of games development but

also proves to be one of the most important, techniques such as lighting, shading and even character

modelling all begin with drawings; giving a visual representative of what is to be interpreted within

the game its. As a result game developers can tweak and improve their game visually during these

early stages, in preparation for the creation of a game with the most exiting graphics with a huge

sense of realism, depending on the genre of game.

For this type of concept art you can see how sketched it looks and added some shading to make a

demonstration on what might the character of the game will look like by showing the characters

appearances in detail sketching the aspects of the character.

These are some examples of the objects on concept art will look l ike and as you can see the weapons

of concept art and what will they look like and what character will suit the type of weapon they had

to put examples by adding detail on the weapon like shading, texture and colour.

In this example I showed what concept art will look like for an environment type of game and how it

is detailed with bright shading colours and dark colours this shows a sample on what the game might

look like, it also shows characters on the environment on what it might be in game.
