Words that we use, that non-knitters would not understand if we said them in a conversation. For example, "I am going to frog this sweater." Or, "No, don't give up. Just tink a row or two and then you can do the yarnover that you missed." Have you ever heard anyone talk about her or his pile of UFOs? I could go on, but I am sure you understand. Ad if you do not, then keep knitting and it will become clear someday soon. I also have been trying to come to grips with my stash. I have noticed that different knitters approach their stash with different feelings. Some are proud of it and speak of it with pride like as if they were telling you about their brand new house. It has EVERYTHING I LOVE! I WILL BE ABLE TO ENJOY IT FOREVER! But others speak of their vast stockpile of yarn in hushed voices and describe it as "a sin" or "shameful." I met one knitter who did not want me to come into her house because, as she finally confessed, she was so loaded with yarn and books and all things fiber, that she said she had crossed over into the realm of being a hoarder. I have just moved so I am acutely aware of the five large Rubbermaid containers full of yarn in my closet. I don't know what to think. If the end of life as we know it comes and every LYS closes, I guess I will be fine forever. This is a good thing ... right? On the other hand, when is enough, enough? Maybe I need to get rid of some of it before I add any more. Hmmm ... should I knit it or give it away. I am confused?! For now I think I will just close the closet door and take the "out of sight, out of mind" approach to this ever growing pile of yarn. Oh goodie, that's better. I think I will go shopping.   By Sherri Breslow Hacke Well, hurricane season is upon us and to help out, we have put together a list of emergency supplies all knitters and crocheters will need to keep on hand.

1. A brightly colored, waterproof  beach bag for use as a tote to carry everything. Make sure this bag is marked “In Case of Fire, Save this First!”

2. Batteries and a portable light to read patterns by. Caution: Use only non-rechargeable batteries. Rechargeables will not recharge in the event of a power failure.

3. One white pillow case and one dark pillow case. These are to be held on your lap under the opposite-colored yarn to make seeing stitches easier

4. Project yarn. Natural fibers should be fire-retardant. We recommend enough yarn for one large and two small projects. Boredom can set in if not enough projects are on hand. More IS better.

5. Two pairs of scissors. This will ensure that one is not borrowed when you need to have one handy

6. Your favorite beverage. Please drink responsibly.

7. Chocolate. M&Ms are not supposed to melt in the heat.

8. Address book, including the phone number of the nearest yarn shop that has electricity. It would be wise to become close friends with the owners of this establishment in case your home is without power.

9. A bottle of wine to take with you to the above-mentioned yarn shop

10. Sheet protectors to keep all  your patterns dry even in the rain.

11. A full set of knitting needles and/or crochet hooks. This is extremely important in case you come across a new yarn you must have or another person who didn't pack an emergency kit before the hurricane hit. It would be wise to have this as a completely extra set just in case the items you lend are not returned.

12. A good sense of humor will be a welcome relief to you and those around you in times of troubles and when you accidentally knock all of your stitches off the needle.

We are all about beads at TKC! Learn to use beads in your knitting and crocheting with several different techniques. Bead classes start June 14. From 2-5 p.m., come in to sit, knit, chat, get help and play some fun games for prizes. The rumors are TRUE: we ARE gambling for yarn! See Sue for more details.

T a k e Y o u r K n i t t i n g W i t h Y o u Amy Palmer, assistant editor of Knitscene magazine, recently shared her tips for traveling with your knitting on the Knitting Daily blog. Below is a roundup of her ideas. You can read the full article online at http://goo.gl/efpGV.

1. Pick easy projects. Choose projects you can knit without having to pay a lot of attention.

2. Pick small projects, such as socks, hats, mittens or scarves.

3. Choose tools wisely. Do you really want to worry about chasing after dropped DPNs on an airplane?

4. Organize everything. Place your projects in bags with closures to protect them and prevent tangles.

5. Keep a notebook handy. Write down stopping points when you get interrupted, as well as modifications.

6. Relax. Having something familiar to do -- knitting -- can help you relax when travel gets stressful.

7. Document your knitting in fun ways. Photograph your works-in-progress in front of tourist destinations.

Hold onto your shorts, KnitWits! The Summer Sock Spectacular started June 1. We're packing the next three months full of sock yarn and everything you can do with it. Too hot for a lap full of sweater? Can't bear the thought of being covered in blankets? You need something small and portable that fits in your beach bag. It's the best time of year for thinking socks, y'all. Join us for classes in the basics (cuff-down and toe-up), the creative (learn how easy it is to design your own pattern), the eccentric (Cat Bordhi style,

anyone?) and the ultra-challenging (colorwork). We'll also have express classes – all the technique with half the class time. What? You don't do the sock? And you don't wanna? No problem. Hazel's going to guide a lucky few through one of the greatest specimens of the hottest trend: shawlettes. Join her for guidance (or accountability) as she walks you down the path of shawly happiness known as Citron (go Knitty)! And we'll also have great samples and patterns using fingering weight yarn for you to wade through, along with help and advice from a slightly giddy staff. Need more encouragement? How about some contests? More details will be forthcoming, but we're going to provide plenty of incentive for y'all to break out the skinny yarn. Check out our website for immediate class openings, and keep an eye on it, our Ravelry group and our Facebook page as events unfold. We love our KnitWits!!

Please support our advertisers, as they help defray the cost of this newsletter. We are attempting to break the Guinness world record for the largest-ever ball of hand-wound yarn! Of course this is going to take a lot more than my stash of unwanted, old tangled yarns and end of lots. So, if you have any unwanted yarns that need a good home, please send them to us. The giant yarn ball will be donated to a charity after it breaks the record. We have a statewide charity that will graciously wind-off the yarns and use them to help others all over Virginia. Pictures are being published on our Facebook page.
