PureDrive™ — Fully-Digitalized Processing for High Picture Qualities (PRO-1120HD/PRO-920HD/PRO-1010HD/PRO-810HD)With conventional plasma display panels (PDP), input signalsare converted back and forth between analog and digital beforebeing sent to the display panels (see table below). This tends tocause specific noise, which degrades the quality of displayedpictures.
Pioneer, as a leading manufacturer of PDPs, hasdeveloped a technology called PureDrive™. With the new Eliteplasma display panels featuring this latest technologicalbreakthrough, use of originally-developed, custom chipsets —four used within the media receiver and two within the panelsthemselves — keeps video signals entirely in a digital domain. Moreover, each block in the image processing circuit is directlyconnected using the shortest signal path to minimize image-degrading noise and signal deterioration. This helps retainsuperior signal quality from input to output.
Advanced Continuous Emission II (PRO-1410HD/PRO-1010HD/PRO-810HD) andAdvanced Continuous Emission III(PRO-1120HD/PRO-920HD)Pioneer is one of the few PDP manufacturers that internallycompletes the whole process of producing PDPs — fromresearch and development to actual manufacturing of displaypanels. This makes it possible for us to have our panel drivingtechnologies incorporated in the panels themselves. AdvancedContinuous Emission II (ACE II) is the most remarkableexample. The PRO-1410HD, PRO-1010HD, and PRO-810HD, highlighted with this signal-processingtechnology, provide the following distinctive benefits:
1. Finer Details in Low Brightness RangeThe ACE II offers further accuracy of gradation reproduction inthe low brightness range, reproducing details of dark imageseven more finely.2. Elimination of False ContoursThe ACE II also eliminates the false contours (sharp edgeswhere there should be smooth contours) — a Pioneer-exclusivebenefit.
The PRO-1120HD and PRO-920HD come with an upgradedversion of this technology — Advanced Continuous Emission III —for even better picture quality.
PDP TechnologyThe PDP screen is actually two panels of glass with nearly amillion pixels sandwiched between them. The pixels consist oftiny cells that hold gas, with electrodes on the top and bottom.Electrical discharges cause the gas to emit ultraviolet light thatexcites red, green and blue phosphors, which in turn radiatevisible light to produce bold, color images.

AUDIO/VIDEO COMPONENTS
PRODUCT REFERENCE GUIDE
True to their name, Pioneer Elite components are
designed for a very select group of users — those who
settle for nothing less than the best in audio and video.
The state-of-the-art performance and specifications of the high-
end products are the results of uncompromising standards of
engineering and manufacturing, painstaking selection of parts
and devices, and careful testing of each and every component.
Pioneer Elite is the single brand solution for the discriminating
home theater enthusiast.
This year, Pioneer's new HD plasma display panels
(PDPs) come in three different screen sizes — 61", 50", and
43". All the PDPs deliver finer details in the low-brightness
range, thanks to the Advanced Continuous Emission II & III
technologies. The lineup includes units featuring the new First
Surface Pure Color Filter that ensures superior contrast and low
reflection even in bright environments. The new PDPs also fea-
ture PureDrive™ that allows full-digital processing of video sig-
nals without D/A or A/D conversion and minimizes image-
degrading noise and signal deterioration. Most new PDPs also
come with Advanced PureCinema with 3-3 pull-down, which
perfectly synchronizes the frame arrangement with original
films to ensure the smooth, natural pictures specific to the
movies.
The new Elite A/V receivers feature an expanded line-
up of units incorporating the advanced version of Pioneer-origi-
nal Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration System, which permits
easy optimization of surround sound with more detailed param-
eters. The lineup also come with an expanded range of THX-
certified units.
Most other high-end products sacrifice convenience
and aesthetic standards for the sake of performance. Pioneer
Elite is different: the series also places emphasis on sophisticated
styling and ease of use. The new Elite PDPs each comes with a
bezel in a black hairline aluminum finish, while most other
components feature the classy high-gloss Urushi or Urushi-style
finishes. It's this difference that makes these products worthy of
the name Pioneer.
In this Product Reference Guide to the Pioneer Elite
Series, you'll find details about the technologies and features
that make the series the elite of home theater and home enter-
tainment. We hope you will find this guide useful.

instantly recreates each individual still frame to create a smooth, more natural presentation.
ISF Custom Calibration Configuration (C3)ISF C3 is an Elite-exclusive feature that enables the PDP to beoptimized for the specific room where it is placed. As anoptional service available through Elite dealers, a specially-trained ISF professional can inspect the conditions of theviewing room and calibrate contrast, tint, sharpness, colorlevels, and other parameters to best fit the environment. Roomlayout and size, ambient light (for both day and night viewing),and other conditions that affect picture quality are measuredand factored in. The result is unparalleled picture accuracy.
Once the ISF C3 calibrations are made, ISF becomes apreset mode, allowing you to revert back to the TV's originalsettings or make fine tuning adjustments. You can toggle theISF mode back and forth whenever you want.
The PRO-1120HD, PRO-920HD, PRO-1010HD, andPRO-810HD come with the second generation of thistechnology, which permits calibration via RS-232 interface.
ATSC Digital Broadcast Compatibility(PRO-1120HD/PRO-920HD)The PRO-1120HD and PRO-920HD come with a built-inATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) compatibletuner. In addition to regular TV (NTSC), the units show threetypes of ATSC digital broadcasts — Standard-Definition,Enhanced-Definition, and High-Definition — with a Pioneertechnology that up-converts video signals for the highest-possiblepicture quality.
The units permit connection to D-VHS recorders viai.LINK (IEEE 1394) terminal for recording DTV programswhile retaining high resolution.
DCR (Digital Cable Ready) Tuner (PRO-1120HD/PRO-920HD)The media receiver for PRO-1120HD and PRO-920HD features a built-in unidirectionaldigital cable tuner, which provides easy "plug andplay" of basic cable channels without an external cable box.
HDMI™ InputHDMI (High Definition MultimediaInterface) is an uncompressed, all-digitalinterface for both audio and video signals — the first industry-supported interface of its kind. With a single-cable connection,it allows transmission of a huge amount of high-quality data —such as uncompressed HDTV signals — to be input at speedsup to 5GBps.
Another benefit of HDMI is its simplicity. It provides astraight digital path from point A to point B without affectingthe signal in any way. Additionally, it doesn't performunnecessary compression and re-compression steps, so the signalremains in a pure, digital state. This lossless process maintains ahigher level of image quality than other connection systems.
HDMI provides plug and play capability andaccommodates all of the current ATSC digital televisionformats. It also supports up to eight channels of audio. Anddespite its huge bandwidth power and ability to accommodateboth audio and video, the plug itself is much smaller than aDVI plug.
The PRO-1120HD, PRO-920HD, PRO-1010HD, andPRO-810HD, moreover, come with two HDMI inputs. Youcan keep the PDP connected with both a DVD player and aSTB, for example.
i.LINK (IEEE1394) Terminals for D-VHS RecorderConnection (PRO-1120HD/PRO-920HD)The media receiver of the PRO-1120HD and PRO-920HD comes with two i.LINK (IEEE1394)terminals that allow connection with a D-VHSrecorder*. i.LINK is a digital serial interface that can handledigital video and audio signals. This means you can recorddigital TV programs to the D-VHS recorder** retaining highresolution.
*D-VHS recorder only. Other devices cannot be connected.**Only digital TV programs can be recorded.

Black Stripe Coating for Vivid ImagesThe additional black stripes help reduce the amount of externallight reflected off the screen surface, which greatly improvescontrast. Viewers can enjoy sharp, vivid pictures, even underbright ambient lighting, with no washed-out colors or poorcontrast.
True Matrix Imaging with Deep EncasedCell Structure (PRO-1120HD/PRO-920HD/PRO-1010HD/PRO-810HD)Whereas other PDPs use rows of cells, Pioneer's Elite plasmadisplay panels use a deep Encased Cell Structure. It features anincreased phosphor area and a reduced leakage of light toadjacent cells to produce a bright, clear image. The DeepEncased Cell Structure also increases light emission efficiency, improving brightness by 60% over models with earlier types ofEncased Structures.
Additionally, the green phosphor element featuressuperior persistence characteristics, which help deliver theindustry's highest level of brightness: 1,100 cd/g for the PRO-920HD/PRO-810HD, and 1,000 cd/g for the PRO-1120HD/PRO-1010HD. The units also boast superiorwhite reproduction for more subtle nuances, and improvedclarity for more natural, precise rendering of characters andimages.
The PRO-1410HD, a 61-inch PDP from Pioneer, alsofeatures a special cell structure — New Encased Cell Structure.
First Surface Pure Color Filter (PRO-1120HD/PRO-920HD)Elite Plasma Display Panels retain superior contrast even inbright environments thanks to the First Surface Pure ColorFilter, an image enhancing layer of film affixed to the glasspanel covering the plasma cells. Unlike conventional glassfilters, First Surface Pure Color Filters eliminate the spacebetween the film and the glass to reduce ambient light reflections.
This improves contrast ratio in bright environments by 20%.Additionally, the filter balances the colors of the passing light, producing color values that are closer to the true NTSC colorstandard than conventional TVs or monitors can display.
Capsulated Color Filter (PRO-1410HD)Pure Color Filter II (PRO-1010HD/PRO-810HD)The Elite PDPs come with special filters that greatly decreaseexternal light reflectivity for higher contrast, providing anextremely clear image even in bright environments. The filtersalso optimize the primary colors (red, green, and blue) byfiltering out undesired colors, to improve the quality of imagereproduction.
Advanced PureCinema with 3-3 Pull-down(PRO-1120HD/PRO-920HD/PRO-1010HD/PRO-810HD)The Pioneer Elite PDPs come equipped with a newly-developed,exclusive IC that enables 3-3 Pull-down — AdvancedPureCinema. From 24fps film-based sources, this IC createsthree full copies of each frame for 72 progressive frames persecond, which perfectly synchronizes the frame arrangementwith original films, and eliminates the need for interpolations. As a result, film-based materials on DVD provide the naturalrepresentation unique to real films.
PureCinema Automatic Format Converter(PRO-1410HD)Film (24 frames per second) doesn't always translate correctly totelevision (30 frames), so watching a movie at home can befrustrating for videophiles. Not true with the PRO-1410HD.The Pioneer-exclusive Automatic Format Converter analyzes amovie's signal and boosts picture quality eight times.PureCinema detects an NTSC 3/2 film-based source and

Natural Enhancer (PRO-1120HD/PRO-920HD/PRO-810HD)Conventional contour image correction technologies effectivelysharpen contours, but also affect picture qualities, causingannoying noises such as jagged edges. The newly developedNatural Enhancer takes contour image correction to the nextlevel. On any source, analog or digital, the Natural Enhancercleans up the jagged edges and wavy "moiré" patterns, andenhances the contrast at the edges of images to reproduce clean, detailed pictures.
Digital CTI (PRO-1120HD/PRO-920HD/PRO-1010HD/PRO-810HD)Conventional plasma display panels have difficulty accuratelyrendering a colored image laid over another — a man in a darkblue jacket standing in front of a red wall, for example. Theusual result is a dithered pattern and a muddy combination ofcolors where the two images intersect. With the Pioneer ElitePDPs, however, Digital Color Transient Improvement (CTI)smooths out edges of colored images so that they are moredistinct, offering true color fidelity and color resolution.
Color ManagementThe Color Management function allows individual adjustmentof six basic colors. Red, yellow, green, cyan, blue, and magentacan be fine-tuned according to your preference (see table belowfor details), without losing the natural color balance of thewhole picture. Turn the golf course a more vivid shade ofgreen, or make the sea a deeper blue, for example.
Selectable Screen Sizes (PRO-1120HD/PRO-920HD/PRO-1010HD/PRO-810HD)Whether you're watching conventional television, wide-screenDVDs, or widescreen movies, the Pioneer Elite PDPs have fiveselectable screen modes that can handle any format. You canwatch conventional broadcasts in traditional 4:3 mode, or fillthe entire screen with ZOOM or WIDE mode. When viewingDVDs and Digital TV, use the FULL Mode to perfectly matchthese widescreen (16:9) images to your screen. When watchingwidescreen movies, you can use CINEMA mode.
The Elite PDPs also come with a PC mode, whichprovides three selectable screen sizes for XGA signals. ThePRO-1120HD and PRO-920HD come with a PC mode fornon-XGA signals, too.

10-bit 3D Digital Y/C Separation Circuit(PRO-1120HD/PRO-920HD/PRO-1010HD/PRO-810HD)NTSC (analog) video images consist of two signals, luminance(Y) signals for brightness information and chrominance (C)signals which contain color information. When analog video isplayed back, the Y and C signals must be kept separate or theywill interfere with each other, which results in an annoyingvideo noise called "dot crawl" — distracting, visible dotsmoving along the edges of images. To combat this, Pioneer hasdeveloped the 10-bit 3D Digital Y/C Separation Circuitexclusively for use in plasma display panels. Powered byPureDrive, the circuit effectively keeps Y and C signals separate, reducing the annoying noise and improving the rendering ofcontoured objects and integrity of images.
Natural Re-Size (PRO-1120HD/PRO-920HD/PRO-1010HD/PRO-810HD)Many plasma display panels allow the user to select a screenmode best suited to the material being viewed — for example, when watching a regular 4:3 TV show on a 16:9 widescreenmonitor, the image can be stretched to fill the entire screen. But with conventional plasma displays, that stretching processcauses problems such as blocky, fuzzy, or over-stretched images. The Pioneer Elite plasma display panels have an exclusiveNatural Re-Size function that re-shapes the picture and allows itto maintain a natural appearance without adding the artifactsthat deteriorate picture quality.
Digital Chroma Decoder (PRO-1120HD/PRO-920HD/PRO-1010HD)Color noise is another form of analog video interference —noticeable speckled imperfections seen within solid colors onyour screen. The new Elite plasma display panels feature a 10-bit Digital Chroma Decoder to reduce noise and provide betterfrequency response, for pure, clean colors.
Digital Noise Reduction Circuit and MPEGNoise Reduction Circuit Special high-luminance cyclic Digital Noise Reduction circuitryreduces random digital noise, including color noise andinconsistency (especially seen in dark image areas) that arise inthe signal reproduction process of terrestrial broadcasts, DVDs,and others. The PRO-1120HD, PRO-920HD, PRO-1010HD,and PRO-810HD also come equipped with MPEG DigitalNoise Reduction, which cuts "mosquito noise" caused byMPEG video compression used in DVD.
Dynamic HD Converter for Sharper Images(PRO-1120HD/PRO-920HD/PRO-1010HD/PRO-810HD)Interlaced signals of terrestrial broadcasts and DVD and PCvideo sources are up-converted into progressive signals foroptimal viewing on the PRO-1120HD/PRO-1010HD (1,280 x 768-dot high-resolution) and the PRO-920HD/ PRO-810HD (1,024 x 768-dot high-resolution). With thenumber of on-screen detection points significantly increased to84, HD converter offers sharper, more natural images free ofjagged edges and distortion seen on displays with conventionalconverters.
Dynamic Range Expander (PRO-1120HD/PRO-920HD/PRO-1010HD/PRO-810HD)With run-of-the-mill plasma display panels, highly contrastedcolors — such as a white shirt and black hair — tend to affecteach other and accurate reproduction of both colors is difficult. When the hair is a true black, the shirt will look dull off-white.Or the shirt will appear as pure white when the hair is not atrue black. With enormous processing power, the DynamicRange Expander makes fuller use of video signal spectrumcapacity to expand dynamic range. The results are blackerblacks, whiter whites, and outstanding overall contrast. Withthe Elite PDPs, three different levels — high, medium, and lowsettings — are available for getting the best results out ofvarious pictures.

Multi-Window DisplayMulti-Window Display of the Pioneer Elite PDPs takes dual-material viewing to new levels, letting you display anycombination of NTSC, HDTV, and PC screens either as twinimages (50/50 split screen) or as picture-in-picture, whichallows you to position the subscreen upper left/right or lowerleft/right. The PRO-1010HD and PRO-810HD also permit"picture-out-picture" display, which shows the small subscreenon the right side of the main screen. Watch pro football on TV,for example, right alongside fantasy football on your PC.
The PRO-1120HD and PRO-920HD can even display afreeze frame of a broadcast. Just press the FREEZE button at thescene you want, and the screen is split to display a still image ofthe scene on the right, while continuing the broadcast on the left.
Closed Caption Compatibility (PRO-1120HD/PRO-920HD)The Closed Caption works with television programs and homevideos displaying the logo for closed captions. Closedcaptions allow the hearing-impaired to enjoy TV and videos onthe PDPs through the use of subtitles displayed on screen.
The PRO-1120HD and PRO-920HD also offer the"On If Mute" function. Choose "On If Mute" on the closedcaptions setup screen, and subtitles will automatically appear onthe screen whenever the sound is muted. You can convenientlyfollow a program's story, for example, while talking on the phone.
The units deliver closed captioning from digital TVprograms, too.
Three Surround Modes — SRS, TruBass, and FOCUS (PRO-1120HD/PRO-920HD) To expand your sound options, thePRO-1120HD and PRO-920HDfeature three surround modes: SRS, fordynamic 3-D surround throughout anexpansive listening area; TruBass forsurprisingly big, natural bass sound; andFOCUS, which enhances the surroundeffect and shifts the sound field upward. The units also permit simultaneous activation of TruBass and SRS.* SRS, TruBass and FOCUS are trademarks of SRS Labs. INC.
Speaker Systems (Optional)The optional speaker systems — PDP-S25LR for 50" panelsand PDP-S26LR for 43" panels — match the slim designs ofthe display panels, while still delivering superior sound. Thespeakers can be installed in two different ways:
Flush: The speakers are fixed flat against the sides of thedisplay panel.
Air: The speakers are mounted slightly separate from thesides of the display panel. This allows you to adjust the angle ofthe speakers, delivering the optimum sound field for yourlistening position.
New Fiber-Optic Extension System (Optional)Do you want to install your Elite Plasma Display Panel at adistance from its receiver? The PDA-H05, Pioneer's new fiber-optic extension system, makes it easier than ever — with highdurability, improved cable strength, and stable signal transfer.
In conventional extension systems, converter boxes areconnected by two fiber optic cables and two metal cables. Ournew extension system cuts through that troublesome wireworkby integrating the functions of all four cables in just one 100ftfiber optic cable (see illustration below). The new cable combinesa light, easy-to-handle weight with superior resistance to damagefrom bending. This is possible due to a new material — plasticoptic fiber — that boasts far better flexibility than conventionalglass fiber.
In addition, plastic optic fiber helps create fantasticpicture quality, because it is completely resistant to electricsignal interference from other devices.
The package includes:• 100ft Optical Cable• MDR Cable (29-1/2 Inches) x 2• DVI Cable (29-1/2 Inches) x 2• AC Adapter x 2• Converter Box x 2

PC Signal Compatibility Table (PRO-1410HD)Supported resolution When the screen size is 4:3, each signal is converted to a 1024 dots x 768 lines signal. (Except for *2, *3, *4)
When the screen size is D BY D, the picture is displayed in the original resolution.
When the screen size is FULL, each signal is converted to a 1365 dots x 768 lines signal. (Except for *3)
*1 Only when using a graphic accelerator board that is capable of displaying 852 x 480. *2 This signal is converted to a 1024 dots x 640 lines signal. *3 The picture is displayed in the original resolution. *4 The aspect ratio is 5:4. This signal is converted to a 960 dots x 768 lines signal. *5 Normally the RGB select mode suitable for the input signals is set automatically. If the picture is not displayed properly, set the RGB mode prepared for the input signals listed in the table above. *6 To connect the monitor to Macintosh computer, use the monitor adapter (D-Sub 15-pin) to your computer's video port. *7 Other screen modes (ZOOM and WIDE) are available as well. *8 When viewing a moving picture at a vertical frequency greater than 65Hz, the picture may sometimes be unstable (jumpy). If this occurs, please set the refresh rate of the external equipment to 60Hz.
To view 480I@60Hz (480 interlaced lines, 60Hz refresh rate) when sync polarity is "Sync on Green", set "RGB SELECT" to "MOTION". *9 CVT standard compliant.
NOTE: • While the input signals comply with the resolution listed in the table above, you may have to adjust the position and size of the picture or the fine picture because of errors in synchronization of your computer. • When a 1280 dots x 1024 lines signal or 1600 dots x 1200 lines signal is input to the monitor, the picture will be compressed. • This monitor has a resolution of 1365 dots x 768 lines. It is recommended that the input signal should be XGA, wide XGA, or equivalent. • With digital input some signals are not accepted. • The sync may be disturbed when a nonstandard signal other than the aforementioned is input. • If you are connecting a composite sync signal, use the HD terminal. • "IBM PC/AT" and "XGA" are registered trademarks of International Business Machines, Inc. of the United States. • "Apple Macintosh" is a registered trademark of Apple Computer, Inc. of the United States.

2-3 Pull-down PureCinema Progressive ScanTechnologyNormally there are 24frames per second(24fps) on film. OnDVD, movies arerecorded in the same24fps format, each framecontaining the data forthe entire 480 scanninglines (480p) forprogressive scanning.Pioneer's 2-3 Pull-downPureCinema ProgressiveScan Technology isexactly the technique totake advantage ofdelicately nuancedimages recorded byprogressive scanning. DVDs hold the data for inverse telecineconversion: When playing back film-originated sources,Pioneer's advanced scanning technology makes use of the dataand inserts additional frames accurately. This allows the viewerto enjoy natural, film-like images. Pictures are smooth andsharp, with high resolution, free of bothersome artifacts likejagged edges on moving objects.
Note: With the DV-45A, PureCinema Progressive Scan directly turns 24fps progressiveimages from DVDs into 60fps progressive images. Because conventional progressive-interlace-progressive conversion is not used, this represents simpler, more efficient way of conversion.
Improved Motion Adaptive Scanning-LineCompensation with VQE8 (DV-59AVi)The VQE8 chip enables improved precision inmotion detection, which presents movingimages from video sources with more naturaltextures and diagonal lines with smoother edges.
"Two-Dimensional Resolution Expander":Pixel Conversion IC for HDMI (DigitalDirect Pixel Drive™) (DV-59AVi)The DV-59AVi comes with "Two-Dimensional Resolution Expander" pixelconversion IC, which up-converts traditionalDVD video signals to high-definitionresolution in the most appropriate way forthe connected monitor or TV. When theElite DVD player is connected to a DLP projector with 1,280 x720 pixels, for example, the new pixel conversion IC up-converts the progressive 480 x 720 signals to progressive 1,280x 720 signals which exactly fit the pixel count of the projector(Digital Direct Pixel Drive™). The signals generated by the
MPEG decoder pass through the Two-Dimensional Resolution Expander, and thenare output via HDMI to an HDMI-compatible monitor or TV.
* Digital Direct Pixel Drive™ is a trademark of Pioneer Corporation.
Component Frame DNR (DVD/VCD) PRO(DV-59AVi/DV-47Ai)DVD boasts a horizontal video resolution of more than 500lines. Unfortunately, high resolution brings about a drawbackof its own: minute noise is more visible. So Pioneer developedcomponent frame cycling DNR (Digital Noise Reduction). Itdiscriminates noise in each of the three components thatcomprise video signals — Y (luminance), PB and PR. Since itcompares consecutive frames rather than consecutive fields, andprocesses individual components rather than composite signals,DNR provides superb noise reduction capability while retaininghigh resolution.
To further ensure higher video quality, Pioneerdeveloped the advanced Component Frame DNR PRO. Withthe new version an optimum parameter is set for each of Y, PB
and PR components to detect noise with higher precision. It'sanother reason new Pioneer Elite DVD players deliver thequality that's much closer to the 35mm film than ever.
• Advanced Digital Video Noise Reduction with FilmRecognition (DV-59AVi/DV-47Ai/DV-F07) The Advanced Digital Video Noise Reduction conducts digitalnoise reduction (Component Frame DNR PRO) for the original24fps progressive source on DVD, instead of the one convertedinto 30fps. This results in more appropriate reduction of noise.Additionally, a high-quality video encoder allows viewers totailor picture characteristics to their individual tastes.

2-3 Pull-down PureCinema Progressive ScanTechnology (DV-59AVi/DV-47Ai/DV-45A)Interlaced vs. Progressive Scanning• Interlaced scan system — NTSC TV StandardWhen you look at your TV screen close up, you will notice animage is made up of many horizontal lines. These are called scanlines: an image is painted on the screen by the scan lines thatsweep from left to right, and top to bottom, in sequence. Onescreenful of TV picture is equivalent to a frame; by current NTSCTV standards there are 480 scan lines in each frame (480i).
All 480 scan lines that form an image are not sent toyour TV at the same time; every other line is transmittedalternately every 1/60 second. In other words, in the first 1/60of a second, odd-numbered lines (1st, 3rd, 5th, and so on),which total 240 and collectively form an odd-numbered field, are sent. In the next 1/60 of a second, even-numbered lines(2nd, 4th, 6th, and so on), which collectively form an even-number field, are transmitted to fill in the remaining space. Inthis way, a complete image, that is, a frame, is formed.
Such is NTSC interlaced scanning. With this system, lines are scanned for odd- and even-numbered fields alternatelyevery 1/60 second, to build one frame every 1/30 second.
• Progressive scanning for double resolution of interlacedscanningWith interlaced scanning used by NTSC TV standards, thelarger the display, the more noticeable the picture flicker.Progressive scanning was developed to solve this problem. With progressive scanning, all 480 lines are scanned from top tobottom in 1/60 of a second to build an entire frame (480p).With a progressive scan TV, the data for the odd- and even-numbered fields is stored in memory and undergoes fieldinterpolation to convert from 30fps (frames-per-second) formatto 60fps simulated format. Therefore, progressive scanning canprovide double resolution of interlaced scanning, to presenthigh-quality images with less flickering.

Solid Audio Circuit Block for SuperiorSound (DV-59AVi/DV-47Ai/DV-45A)• All the decoding functions for DVD-Audio, DVD-Video andDTS are integrated in a single AV decoder chip. This allowssimple and straightforward layout of signal paths.• A DSP is used for configuring speaker systems, with BassManagement, gain control, and the distance in 0.5-footincrements adjusted accurately for DVD-Audio. All theseparameters are available for SACD except for distance. It's alsopossible to choose "SMALL" for front speakers.• Signals of 2-channel Linear PCM sources (CD, for instance)may be set to bypass the DSP by the CD DIRECT switch toensure high-quality signal transfer.• Each of the six channels features a 192kHz/24-bit D/A converterthat accepts 192kHz PCM data and DSD (Direct Stream Digital)data directly. High-performance Super DAC (Burr-BrownPCM1738EG) is used for the front channels with DV-47Ai andDV-45A, and for all the six channels with the DV-59AVi.Moreover, the output from the DAC is a differential-currentconfiguration to suppress common-mode noise.• With the DV-59AVi and DV-47Ai, low-impedance capacitorsare used in the power supply to reduce noise.
Pure Audio On/Off (DV-59AVi)Pure Audio provides the optimal conditions for reproducinganalog audio. Turn the Pure Audio on, and the Elite DVDplayer automatically stops the signal transmission throughVideo output, HDMI, i.LINK, and Digital Audio outputs, andturns off the fluorescent display. This prevents the analog audiosignals from being affected by interference from those circuits.
*Pure Audio is activated when playback starts.
Hi-Bit Legato Link Conversion (DV-F07/DV-C36)Hi-Bit Legato Link Conversion PRO (DV-59AVi/DV-47Ai)In the process of recording and mastering a CD, low-levelsignals — signals lower than LSB (Least Significant Bit) of aCD's 16-bit system — are removed. But the absence of low-level signals causes quantization noise, resulting in a steppedwaveform of converted analog signals — proof that reproducedsound is quite unlike the original. Hi-Bit Legato LinkConversion combines Pioneer-developed bit expansiontechnology with Legato Link for still better musicalreproduction. This conversion process results in a waveformwhich is both smoother and closer to the original thanconventional technology allows. The DV-59AVi and DV-47Aicome with Hi-Bit Legato Link Conversion PRO that upsamplesthe audio signals of CDs and DVDs to 176.4kHz (from44.1kHz) and 192kHz (from 48kHz or 96kHz), respectively. This processing extends the frequency response and improvestransient response for wide-range sound.
Jog/Joystick Remote Control (DV-59AVi/DV-47Ai/DV-45A/DV-F07)The remote control for Elite DVD players featuresa jog dial and a joystick — the first for scan andother versatile playback, the second for navigatingGUI on-screen menus.
On-screen GUI (Graphical User Interface)The on-screen display helps you set up the environmentproperly. Interacting with and assisted by the on-screen displayon your TV, you can choose the GUI language, screen aspectratio, DVD camera angle, parental lock level, and many otherfunctions. Easy-to-follow GUI menus are logically layered topromote ease of use. With the DV-F07, you can control up to300 discs through GUI. The DV-59AVi, DV-47Ai and DV-45A come with advanced on-screen GUI that furthersimplifies the complicated DVD settings.
Chroma Upsampling Error Reduction (DV-59AVi, DV-45A*)To record an entire movie or similar content on DVD, datamust be compressed to fit the disc's 4.7GB capacity. Thisprocess reduces the color information (chroma signals) to halfthat of the original, causing Chroma Upsampling Errors —which translates into poor color resolution, or "color blur" ofthe reproduced pictures. With the Pioneer Elite DVD players, anew MPEG decoder effectively reduces the ChromaUpsampling Errors**, improving color fidelity and deliveringmuch truer-to-original pictures than is possible withconventional DVD players.
*Only with progressive scan output.
**Reduction of Chroma Upsampling Errors is conducted only when the player determines
that the loaded disc contains a movie source (24fps).
Super Fine Focus Digital Filter (DV-59AVi, DV-47Ai, DV-45A*)The Super Fine Focus Digital Filter sharply attenuatesunwanted high frequencies without removing necessary videofrequencies. This dramatically cuts video noise and boosts thehorizontal resolution to over 540 lines to provide detailed, sharp pictures.
*DV-45A: Applies to interlace signals only.
108MHz/12-bit Video D/A Converter (DV-47Ai)and 216MHz/14-bit Video D/A Converter (DV-59AVi) with NSV* Technology Thanks to the application of NoiseShaped Video* (Multi-bit Sigma-DeltaProcessing) Technology in combinationwith 8-times oversampling (108MHz),video noise (quantization noise) isspectrally shaped such that it occurs in ahigh frequency region where it can beeasily removed. Benefits are highlinearity and low noise.
The DV-59AVi, moreover, allows 16-timesoversampling (216MHz) for even better picture quality.

Condition Memory (DVD) (DV-F07/DV-C36)Load a disc, and the player automatically recalls the set ofplayback parameters you've selected for it — aspect ratio, soundtrack, subtitle, and OSD position. Once you'vememorized the conditions for a disc, the Elite DVD players willidentify the disc each time you play it and start playback in theconditions selected. Conditions for up to 15 discs with the DV-C36 and 100 with the DV-F07 can be memorized. Setupis as simple as pressing the "CONDITION" button whenyou're through viewing a disc. Memory is managed on theLRU (Least Recently Used) basis: the data (condition) for thedisc that is not recalled longest is automatically erased to makeroom to store the data (condition) of a new disc.
Continue Play Memory (DVD/VCD) (DV-F07/DV-C36)When you interrupt play of a disc, Continue Play Memory(Last Memory) lets you store in memory the last settings for it —aspect ratio, soundtrack, subtitle, and other parameters — as wellas the location where you left off. So, the next time you play thedisc, you can resume play from the same point, using the samesettings. For additional convenience, the settings in memory arenot disturbed even if you have played other DVDs and adjustedsettings in the interim; they are kept for instant recall. You canstore the last settings for up to five DVDs and one VCD.
* Continue Play Memory will be cleared once a loaded VCD is removed.
Custom-File 300-DVD/CD Playback (DV-F07)The DV-F07 is the world's first 300+1 DVD/CD changer.Couple two of them, and you can even control an incredible601 discs — DVDs, CDs and combinations. Audio/Video Connections
On its rear panel, each Pioneer Elite DVD player is providedwith an array of inputs and outputs for digital and analogsources. This means there are many ways to improve, upgradeand expand your home theater system.
Dolby Digital/Linear PCM digital outputs (optical andcoaxial) can be connected to the matching inputs on a DTS-compatible amplifier or receiver for DTS (Digital TheaterSystem). You can customize your system's configurationaccording to your home theater environment.
The component video output provides the highest levelof picture quality. It keeps the video output from a DVD in itsthree separate components — PR, PB and Y. This format, which is standard in professional video, delivers color imageswith much higher precision and definition than the commoncomposite video output used in consumer video products.Degradation due to interference is kept to a minimum. Youenjoy a picture practically free of noise, improved color fidelityand high color purity.
An analog audio input and a coaxial digital input (DV-F07)allow you to combine the image from a loaded DVD with thesound from an external source like a CD.
Three types of video output terminals — component, Sand composite — make it possible to connect a Pioneer DVDplayer direct with a wide variety of projection monitors, andeven to supply video signals to five display monitors.
An S-Video input and a composite video input (DV-F07) let you combine the audio from a loaded CD withthe image from an external source like a VCR.
Stainless Stabilizing Plate and TripleLayered Chassis (DV-59AVi/DV-47Ai)The Stainless Stabilizing Plate improves the stability of the discdriving mechanism, while the Triple Layered Chassis reducesspurious vibrations. The sum total is better signal readoutaccuracy, leading to significant improvement in video and audioquality.
The DV-59AVi, moreover, comes with a new TripleLayered Chassis with increased isolation of components fromvibration for even higher sound and picture quality.
Z-Concept for Higher Musical SignalTransfer AccuracyPioneer developed the Z-Concept as an integral approach toimproving the performance of digital conversion in the timedomain for higher musical signal transfer accuracy. Thisapproach ensures that data is read out from a disc, signals aretransmitted from circuit to circuit, and the digital signals areconverted into analog, all with significantly improved accuracy. In other words, the Z-Concept achieves three objectives:
Stable signal detection;Accurate signal transmission; andJitter-free D/A conversion.

neutralize the sound field of the listening space. The VSX-59TXi, VSX-56TXi, and VSX-54TX,
moreover, come with an upgraded version of this technologicalwonder — Advanced MCACC with 3-dimensionalcompensation. In addition to sound pressure level andfrequency response, the Advanced MCACC applies "time axis"in measuring the listening environment's acoustic characteristicsand in applying frequency response compensation. This enablesthe system to distinguish between direct sound and roomreverberation, resulting in even more precise, minuteadjustment of frequency response for human ears. TheAdvanced MCACC also features "X-Curve Compensation" offrequency response — a living-room sized version of aninternational frequency response standard (ISO2969) used fordesigning movie theaters and dubbing suites.
With the aid of a microphone, included in thepackage, the MCACC measures the response fromeach speaker and performs the following processes:
(1) Checking the absence (or presence) of connected speakersThe system checks which speakers — center, surround, surround back speakers, and/or subwoofer — are connectedto the A/V receiver.
(2) Detecting speaker size (large or small) Bass sound for a small speaker is diverted to a large speakeror subwoofer.
(3) Equalizing the differences of speaker distance from thelistening point Electronically-generated sound delays, as well as thosecaused by speaker distance gaps, are compensated for.
(4) Neutralizing the differences insound pressure levelGaps among channels are limitedto ±0.5dB or less.
(5) Compensating for timbre differences The frequency response of each speaker is measured andadjusted for all nine (VSX-59TXi) or five bands (VSX-56TXi, VSX-54TX, and VSX-52TX). This iscompleted with the original "Envelop Compensation"applied technology, which ensures optimum timbre-matching with minimum phase variations among channels.
(6) Time-axis compensation (VSX-59TXi/VSX-56TXi/VSX-54TX)A revolutionary, new function integrated into AdvancedMCACC. Acoustic treatment can be point-controlled,either manually or automatically, along range that is doublethe width of the Standard MCACC, or between 0msec and160msec points — by units of 20msec between 0msec and80msec points. Minute adjustment allows you to create anideal sound field according to the acoustic characteristics ofvarious listening environments.
* Room reverberation data, measured by Advanced MCACC, can be checked on the OSD.
(7) X-Curve Compensation (VSX-59TXi)This newly-applied technology not only calibrates thephysical tonal balance, but also corrects for the humanbrain's interpretation of sound as it is affected by the roomsize. The result is perfectly flat frequency response.
With all the Elite A/V receivers, you can manually fine-tunethe frequency responses of individual speakers according to taste.
THX CertifiedTHX is a Lucasfilm Ltd. program created toachieve maximum accuracy in the reproductionof movie sound. Movie soundtracks arerecorded on a large "dubbing stage" usingprofessional equipment. For a soundtrack to be reproducedaccurately at home, special technologies are required. That'sbecause your "video room" is much smaller than a movietheater and is acoustically live. What's more, your home theatersystem uses speakers that are quite different from those found intheaters — and there are only six of them. Finally, when you'reat home you sit much closer to the speakers than when you'rein a theater. Until now these differences meant you missed thepower, thrill, and emotion of a good movie when you watched

Dolby Digital EX The Pioneer Elite A/V receivers come with the Dolby DigitalEX decoder. This technology features its capability of decodingthe latest theater sound sources for a 6.1-channel output — 5.1channel plus a back surround channel. The additionalsurround sound from behind the listener gives the extra sense ofdimensional detail and intensified involvement.
DTS 96/24DTS 96/24 is the first compressed surround format technologyto support high sound resolution of 96kHz and 24 bits andmultichannel capabilities, which was applied for a Pioneer EliteA/V receiver, the VSX-49TXi, for the first time in the world.
Advantages• DTS 96/24 can deliver 5.1 channels in 96/24 along with full-motion video, for feature film soundtracks and music programson DVD-Video whereas 96/24 has been available on DVD-Video in only two channels, and with video limitations.• DTS 96/24 can also be used on DVD-Audio discs where aDTS 96/24 track can be placed in the video zone, so thatpeople without DVD-Audio players can enjoy multichannel96/24 quality using their DVD-Video players. • The DTS 96/24 soundtrack is fully backward-compatiblewith all existing DTS decoders, which will deliver up to48kHz/24 bits.
Main Features(1) Reproduces high-quality sound, exactly as recorded on 96kHz,24-bit master tapes at the most advanced recording studios.
(2) Full backward compatibility with A/V amplifiers and DVD-Video players equipped with conventional DTSdecoders, allowing playback of existing DTS recordings onthese devices with the same high sound quality.
(3) High-quality DTS 96/24 sound reproduction using anexisting DVD-Video player (with DTS digital outputs)connected via digital cable to a DTS 96/24 A/V amp.
(4) The DTS 96/24 format enables high-quality multi-channel
sound reproduction at 96kHz and 24 bits through 5.1 channels, without any degradation in the high picture quality of theDVD-Video format, thanks to its low compression rate ofaudio signals. DVD-Video movies or music can be enjoyedwith a quality of sound approaching that of DVD-Audio andSACD.
DTS-ES DTS-ES utilizes an additional rear channel to create a true 3-dimensional surround field. In a cinema, this surround backchannel was created by matrixing the left back and right backchannels, just as early surround formats used by a matrix fieldto create front center channel sound.
When a film soundtrack is transferred to DVD, a matrixed backchannel automatically appears in the 5.1-channel format. DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 takes advantages of the greater bandwidth ofDTS technology to create a discrete center back channel. Thischannel is captured with a new generation of decoders like theone built into Pioneer Elite receivers. The advantages of thissystem are clear:
• Discrete back channels can be played, restoring the leftsurround and right surround as independent.
• A back channel is always matrixed in the left surroundand right surround on 5.1 soundtracks.
• It's fully compatible with any DTS-ES or 5.1-channelrecordings.
DTS NEO:6The conventional matrix decoder derives a center channel and amono surround channel from a matrix-encoded two-channelsource. It delivers better sound than a simple matrix, because itincludes steering logic to improve separation, but the monaural,band-limited surround can be disappointing to usersaccustomed to discrete multi-channel surround sound. DTSNEO:6 provides significant improvement over the conventionaltechnology. It conducts matrix decoding to provide up to sixfull-band channels from matrix-encoded stereo sources. With6.1-channel or 5.1-channel systems, DTS NEO:6 will derive sixor five separate channels, respectively, corresponding to thestandard home-theater speaker layouts. (The 0.1ch subwooferchannel is generated by bass management in the pre amp orreceiver).
DTS NEO:6 can steer a single channel or separatelysteer channels in various ways, to deliver multi-channel soundwithout losing the quality of the original. In addition to"Cinema mode" suited for movie sources, DTS NEO:6 offers"Music mode", which delivers natural multi-channel surroundsound from non-matrix-encoded stereo sources.
The VSX-59TXi is the world's first A/V receiver thatprocesses DTS NEO:6 at 96kHz sampling rate with 24-bit highresolution, which is enabled by a high-performance "UltraDigital Core Engine" (see page 29).
it at home. Now Pioneer and Lucasfilm have teamed up tobring the full glory of realistic cinema sound to the comfort andconvenience of your home.
Pioneer Elite THX/DTS/Dolby Digital A/V receivers offer:
THX Re-Equalization™: A movie theater is large andacoustically dead, so specialized speakers are used, and typicallyplaced far from viewers. Since a soundtrack is recorded forreproduction in such an environment, it sounds overly brilliantwhen played at home. THX Re-Equalization compensates forthis acoustic difference by achieving smoother high-frequencyresponse.
THX Adaptive Decorrelation™: When surroundspeakers play back a mono sound, it often seems to come fromone side rather than enveloping you from all sides as in atheater. THX Adaptive Decorrelation helps to correct for thisinaccuracy by restoring spaciousness on surround signals.
THX Timbre Matching™: Surround sound shouldenvelop the viewer smoothly and seamlessly. Nothing is moredistracting than when sounds jump from one speaker toanother. By improving the front/surround matching, THXTimbre Matching ensures smooth movement of surroundsound.
THX Bass Peak Level Management™: Some DolbyDigital soundtracks produce bass peaks that are undesirable in ahome theater environment. THX Bass Peak Level Managementallows you to control maximum peak levels and properly adjustthem to your home theater system.
THX Loudspeaker Position Time Alignment™: Thisfeature lets you equalize differences in the distances betweenindividual loudspeakers and your listening position. Equalizingthese distances ensures both precise synchronization of theoutputs from all speakers and seamless continuity of thesoundfield.
THX Surround EXTHX Surround EX — Dolby Digital Surround EX is a jointdevelopment of Dolby Laboratories and the THX division ofLucasfilm Ltd. In a movie theater, film soundtracks encodedwith Dolby Digital Surround EX technology are able toreproduce an extra channel — Surround Back — which hasbeen added during the mixing of the program. Becausecurrently available Dolby Digital has 5.1 channels — front left, front center, front right, surround right, surround left andsubwoofer channels — Dolby Digital Surround EX offers 7.1channels.
Encoded on special DVD movie releases, the SurroundBack channel places sounds behind the listener. This additionalchannel allows more detailed imaging behind the listener andbrings more depth, spacious ambience and sound localizationthan ever before. When released on the home consumermarket, movies that were created using the Dolby DigitalSurround EX technology bear a Dolby Digital Surround EXlogo on the packaging. The Pioneer Elite A/V receivers — allwith the THX Surround EX logo — can faithfully reproducethis new technology in the home in the THX Surround EXmode.
THX Ultra2 CertificationPioneer is proud to have developed the world'sfirst product with THX Ultra2 certification, and of course, the technology is incorporated inthe latest A/V receiver, the VSX-59TXi. Theoriginal THX Ultra was specified mainly for analog sources inDolby Pro Logic, but the specification for THX Ultra2 isentirely revised for adopting recent high-quality digital formatssuch as DTS and Dolby Digital. THX Ultra2 is the nextgeneration of THX Certification that ensures optimumplayback of all multi-channel music and movie formats.
In the new specification, there are two new modes inaddition to the existing THX Cinema and THX Surround EX.They take advantage of THX new technology of THX ASA(Advanced Speaker Array).
THX Ultra2 Cinema: An advanced version of THXSurround EX allows non-Surround EX encoded, Dolby Digital5.1 and DTS 5.1 material to be played back over the THXconfiguration of seven speakers. The benefit is that, with awider sweet spot, everyone watching the program can enjoy amore enveloping and stable surround field.
THX Music Mode: This mode is for all music material, including 5.1 encoded music.
THX Ultra2/Ultra vs. THX SelectCreated originally as a studio reference monitoring tool, THXcombines Lucasfilm Ltd. entertainment expertise with superiorproduct design by major electronics manufacturers. The result:the ultimate home theater experience.
THX Ultra2 (VSX-59TXi) is the next generation THXcertification that ensures optimum playback of all multi-channel music and movie formats.
THX Select (VSX-56TXi, VSX-54TX, and VSX-52TX)is more suited to the size and listening distances of most livingrooms. It accurately reflects the demands of modern programmaterial, based on a fresh examination of the requirements ofmulti-channel digital audio.

Dual Digital Core Engine The VSX-56TXi and VSX-54TX come equipped with dual 150MIPS Digital DSPs manufactured by Motorola Inc. Originallydeveloped as a surround-sound decoder for movie theaters, theMotorola DSP (C56367) ensures unmatched sound quality andextremely high reliability. One DSP is responsible for decodingsound sources. The other works for post-processing, MCACCand other functions, ensuring highly efficient processing.
Advanced Direct Energy MOS FET withDriver Amplifier ModulePower amplification in all seven channels is performed byAdvanced Direct Energy MOS FETs featuring superiorproperties such as high stability, low energy loss and ultra-linearpower response. The device features a built-in temperaturecompensating function for bias circuitry to minimize thedeviation of the bias point and avoid sound degradation it cancause. Each unit is laser-trimmed to calibrate its bias point foruniform sensitivity. This ensures consistent sound quality formultichannel applications.
The Drive Amplifier Module allows the improved MOSFETs to deliver stable sound imaging, high definition and finedetail, and superior driving of low impedances. The module
itself drives voltage with extremely low distortion, while itsconstant current output circuitry regulates the bias point withhigh stability.
The combination of the Direct Energy MOS FETs andDriver Amplifier Module results in constant "transconductance"(idle drain current), which means that music is reproducedwithout losing its power and dynamism even at the highest levels.
96kHz/24-bit ADCs and 192kHz/24-bit DACsThe key to high resolution is maintaining a perfect signal frominput to output. That's why the Pioneer Elite A/V receiversutilize 96kHz/24-bit ADCs and 192kHz/24-bit DACs — oneDAC for all the eight channels with the VSX-59TXi, VSX-56TXiand VSX-54TX — to ensure your sound is reproduced with thehighest possible clarity and fidelity.
The VSX-59TXi, moreover, features high-performanceBurr Brown DACs (PCM1704), specially selected for Pioneer, and comes with eight pieces of high-performance 192kHz/24-bit ADCs — one for each channel. Besides ensuring thehigh-quality sound for multi-channel sources, this advancedarchitecture improves the sound quality of 2-channel sources, with four ADCs assigned to each channel.
Stable Cast-Iron Base by TAOC (VSX-59TXi)Sustaining the 74 lbs. cabinet of the VSX-59TXi is the Stable Cast-Iron Base, which was jointly developed by Pioneerand Aisin Takaoka Co., Ltd., amanufacturer of TAOC-brand audioequipment parts and devices. Made of highcarbon cast iron, the base boasts 10-times higher dampingability than those made of ordinary steel, and significantlyreduces unwanted vibration both inside and outside the cabinetto deliver astounding bass sound quality. The Stable Cast IronBase is firmly fixed to the 3-D Space Frame thanks to Pioneer'spatent-pending technology, which uses 15 attachment points.

avenue for the transmission of DVD-Audio and SACD music. In addition, i.LINK streamlines connection between the sourceplayer and the receiver.
In conjunction with the DV-59AVi or DV-47Ai, theVSX-59TXi and VSX-56TXi with i.LINK offer exceptionalconveniences, including:
• When you start playback of a DVD on the player, theinput is set to DVD on the receiver and the output isconfigured automatically.
• With DVD-Audio and SACD sources, the MCACCprocedure takes place without the necessity of D/A and A/Dconversion. This means high sound quality.
• Direct connection with a compatible DVD playerallows the receiver's highly stable clock to control the outputsignals from the player — Pioneer-exclusive PQLS (PrecisionQuartz Lock System). This ensures jitter-free signal transmissionand highly accurate reproduction of minute details.
Assignable Digital Inputs with DigitalOutputsThe VSX-59TXi features three coaxial digital inputs, whilethree other Elite receivers each come equipped with two. Theyare also provided with a number of optical digital inputs — fivein the VSX-59TXi and three in the VSX-56TXi, VSX-54TXand VSX-52TX. By default, Digital Inputs 1, 2, 3, and 4 areassigned to DVD/LD, CD, MD, CD-R and TV/SAT, but theycan be re-assigned to different sources than the default sources. Two digital outputs allow direct digital-to-digital recording onan external recorder like a CD-R/RW recorder.
Front Digital Input (Optical Input)The Pioneer Elite receivers come with a digital input terminalon the front panel, as well as those on the rear panel. You canconnect a portable digital unit like DVD and CD players. It'scompatible with all digital audio formats — PCM, DolbyDigital and DTS. So you can have an instant home theater byconnecting a portable DVD player — your friend's maybe.
Component Video In/Output Pioneer Elite receivers are capable of accepting, processing andproducing component video signals (Y-PB-PR) whilemaintaining the high quality of the format. Images from aDVD look best with highest resolution and finest detail whenprofessional component video connections are used. The VSX-59TXi is provided with three component video inputs, and the other three receivers with two. A component videooutput is common to all models.
USB Interface (VSX-59TXi/VSX-56TXi)The VSX-59TXi and VSX-56TXi feature a USB input, whichlets you treat your PC as a regular music playback source. Theaudio is transferred in the digital domain, so you getsignificantly better sound than you usually get from the analogoutput of PC sound cards. Additionally, the VSX-59TXi is theworld's first A/V receiver that accepts multi-channel audiosignals via USB input.
Multi-Room/Multi-Source Remote Control
Wouldn't it be nice if you could enjoy music or movies in a"remote" room away from the "main" room where your audioor audio/video system is? With Pioneer's Multi-Room/Multi-Source Remote Control, you can. You can play two differentprogram sources in two rooms independently at the same time.So now you can watch a program on a VCR in the living room, while the kids are watching their favorite movie on a DVDplayer in the bedroom.
What's more, the second program source can be selectedfrom the remote room using a remote control unit and aninfrared sensor unit (both available from third parties). It's aneasy way to multiply your family's entertainment possibilities.
A convenient function is the "sub room" volumecontrol. You can adjust volume level or turn the power of theamplifier installed in the sub room, independent of the mainroom system's settings. Moreover, you can choose the SubRoom Volume Level setting between "VARIABLE" and"FIXED" for connection of a separate power amplifier, and anintegrated amplifier or receiver, respectively. There's anindependent MULTI-ROOM & SOURCE button on the frontpanel to turn on and off the Multi-Room/Source function.

3-D Space Frame ConstructionThe 3-D Space Frame Construction is developed to clearlydefine the mechanical grounding of the chassis and make thestructure rigid enough to support heavy weight. Perfected byrepeated CAE strength analyses and auditions, this technologyallows each part to deliver its maximum performance.Interference is also reduced by separating and insulating thepower supply, amp, analog circuit, digital circuit, and videosections from one another.
Symmetrical Power Train Design The Pioneer Elite A/V receivers each featurespower amps for seven channels. Accuratemulti-channel sound reproduction is possibleonly when the operating environment of onechannel is physically identical to that of theothers. Therefore, with the new PioneerElite receivers, power output devices for theleft channels (front, surround and surround back) are mountedon the heat sinks symmetrically with respect to those for theright channels.
High-Grade Ragged Speaker TerminalsThe VSX-59TXi and VSX-56TXi feature large, high-graderagged speaker terminals — machined brass for the VSX-59TXi. These and other high-grade parts ensure highersound quality, rigidity, and durability.
Triple-Layered Chassis (VSX-59TXi)Dual-Layered Chassis (VSX-56TXi)The triple-/dual-layered chassis features a chassis base reinforcedwith a thick steel plate to improve strength and stability forhigher fidelity. Moreover, to sustain a heavy high-capacitypower transformer, a thick steel plate is used. The addedtransformer stabilizer acoustically insulates the transformer, enhancing sound clarity.
Pioneer Video ConverterPioneer Video Converter features highly flexible conversion ofvideo signals. It's capable of converting S-video and compositesignals into component video signals, so they appear at theseparate component video terminals. Pioneer's wide-bandconverter is even compatible with the 750p (progressive scan)format. The Pioneer Elite A/V receivers come with a numberof monitor outputs that supply video signals to VCRs, monitorsand other video equipment at the same time.
Component Video Input AssignWith the VSX-56TXi, for instance, COMPONENT VIDEOINPUT 1 and 2 are assigned by default to DVD/LD andTV/SAT, respectively. Using the OSD, you can assign theseinputs to other video sources like VCR 1, to accommodatemore composite inputs.
On-Screen DisplayThe Pioneer Elite A/V receivers feature simple, well-organizedon-screen menus for the best home theater sound andcustomized A/V control via all video terminals, includingcomponent video. Using a handheld remote to interact withmenus on your TV screen, you can assign the digital inputs, setthe crossover point, adjust the time alignment, and do lotsmore, simply and easily. The on-screen instructions even helpyou recall preprogrammed codes for your remote control.
Sleek-Designed Large Touch Panel RemoteControl (VSX-59TXi)The VSX-59TXi comes with a newly-designed touch panelremote control. This remote control is exceptionally thin onaccount of the special built-in rechargeable battery. Thanks to alarge LCD touch panel and a wide variety of preset codes withlearning capability, the operation is simpler and smoother thanever before.
System RemotePioneer A/V SR (System Remote) controls providecomprehensive operating functions, controlling all Pioneercomponents that are SR compatible (they are marked with theSR logomark). They include receivers, DVD players, CD andFile CD players, Laser Disc players, cassette decks, CD and MDrecorders, as well as VCRs and projection monitor receivers.
i.LINK (IEEE1394) Advanced ResolutionDigital Audio Interface (VSX-59TXi/VSX-56TXi)Today, multi-channel sound is critical for enhancing audio ofboth movies and music. i.LINK connection — a new securedbus standard — allows you to enjoy added convenience coupledwith the most technologically advanced method of processingaudio through one cable instead of multiple analog cables. Moreover, it helps simplify your system and expand itsperformance at the same time.

Advanced Direct Energy MOS FET Power AmpAdvanced Direct Energy MOS FETs are simply high-performance devices. Working with Pioneer's Wide-RangeLinear Circuit technology, they feature reduced powerconsumption without sacrificing power output. Moreover,Pioneer's MOS FETs help achieve a flat damping factor across awide audio spectrum, a wide frequency range, and a higheraccuracy at ultra high frequencies while improving powerlinearity.
Wide-Range Linear Circuit Amp The Wide-Range Linear Circuit features a superior open-loopgain response. This means that, with the use of only a nominalamount of feedback and a simple one-pole filter, the circuitapplies NFB (Negative Feedback) at high stability forfrequencies over a wide range, in order to minimize distortion. Moreover, since its output impedance is flat and low over anextended range, the circuit's rejection of external noise isimproved.
Transformer StabilizerThe heavy, high-capacitance power transformer is doublysecured to the chassis — by a stabilizer and an additional frame. This elaborate construction improves the dynamic stability, rigidity and insulation characteristics of the chassis, leading toimproved sound quality.
SB (Surround Back) Mode (M-10X/A-35R)and MR/MS Capability (A-35R)Pioneer Elite receivers feature 7.1-channel THX Surround EXand Dolby Digital Surround EX. But even if your PioneerSurround EX receiver comes with amplifiers for 5.1 channels,it's simple to upgrade it to the full glory of 7.1-channel sound.Just connect the M-10X to your receiver to drive the SBL andSBR (Surround Back Left and Right) channels. You canremotely turn on and off the M-10X as you do so with thereceiver by using SR connections.
The A-35R is functionally flexible. It can be used in aSurround EX system to drive SBL and SBR channels, as part ofa Multi-Room/Multi-Source Remote Control system, or as thecenter unit of a secondary hi-fi system that includes a sourceplayer such as a CD player.

CUSTOM mode sets one trackfrom each of the discs, chosen in random order, in a "custom"file; play stops when 300 or 100 tracks are played back. With somany discs and tracks to randomly choose from, thecombinations — and the fun — are literally endless.

Hi-Bit Legato Link Conversion (PD-F27)Hi-Bit Legato Link Conversion combinesPioneer-developed bit expansion technologywith Legato Link for still better musical reproduction. In theprocess of recording and mastering a CD, low-level signals —signals lower than LSB (Least Significant Bit) of a CD's 16-bitsystem — are removed. But the absence of low-level signalscauses quantization noise, resulting in a stepped waveform ofconverted analog signals — proof that reproduced sound is quiteunlike the original.
Pioneer Hi-Bit Legato Link Conversion restores the lostsignals by computing the original waveform from 16-bit datastored on the CD and performing re-quantization in expanded24-bit data form. This conversion process results in a waveformwhich is both smoother and closer to the original thanconventional technology allows. And Legato Link provides theadditional benefit of extending the frequency response from20kHz to 40kHz to ensure more accurate reproduction.
Legato Link Conversion (PD-F17)Compact Discs contain signals representingfrequencies up to 20kHz; signals above thatfrequency are removed in the digitizing process. (In fact, thedigital filter used in the D/A conversion systems of conventionalCD players is designed to produce an output with flatfrequency response up to 20kHz, with frequencies above thatcut sharply.) But music actually contains frequencies above20kHz. And despite the fact that the highest frequency humanscan perceive is said to be 20kHz, the absence of these highfrequencies can lead to inaccurate reproduction of the originalmusic, making it sound harsh and unnatural.
The Legato Link Conversion is another Pioneer digitalinnovation, one implementation of our Wide-Band Technology.Conventional conversion systems are designed to addressproblems in digital reproduction in terms of frequencyresponse. But since music changes with time, with our systemwe have addressed the problems in terms of time: it "links" onedigital sample of music data with another every 22.7µsec. Andeach data value is reconstructed by using newly developedalgorithms. As a result, it produces a transfer waveform thatcontains no unwanted "ringing" with a shape closer to that ofthe original music. In other words: frequencies beyond 20kHz — thefrequencies contained in the original music — are recovered in full.
DAC24 (PD-F27)By taking advantage of Delta Sigma 1-bit conversiontechnology, Pioneer's DAC24 is fully compatible with theexpanded 24-bit data output through Hi-Bit Legato LinkConversion. Moreover, the D/A converter is highly resistant tojitters (short-term timing irregularities) present in the systemclock. This means resolution is high and harmonic distortionlow even in face of jitters in the clock.
Roulette Rack System with Single-Disc LoaderFor people who want the efficiency of a 100-CD or 300-CDstorage unit and CD player combined in one high-performancecomponent, the PD-F27 and PD-F17 File-Type CD players area dream come true. Pioneer's Roulette Rack System gives youinstant access to 100 or 300 Compact Discs, while a single-discloader lets you play a single disc without disturbing the CDs inthe rack. There's a priority key on the front panel to play thesingle disc instantly.
Center Loading Mechanism (PD-F27)The Roulette Rack System has been designed to be moreconvenient. Pioneer's exclusive Center Loading Mechanismplaces the pickup and disc playback servomechanism inside theturntable. This helps reduce the size of the PD-F27 to a mere16-9/16 inches (420mm) in width, making it probably the mostcompact 300-CD changer in the world. Reliability is improvedtoo because the number of mechanical parts used to build themechanism has been drastically reduced. Loading and accesstime has also been accelerated.
Custom Filing FunctionThe "custom filing" function gives organization to your CDlibrary. On the PD-F27, this function allows you to divide the300 loaded discs into ten groups ("custom" files) so you canclassify discs by type, composer or some other key. The data ondiscs in custom files is stored in memory, so you can reclassifydiscs without physically moving them. The same disc can evenbe put in more than one file. You can set the player to play onlythe discs in a custom file — in random order, if you want. Moreover, the PD-F27 comes with ten CUSTOM FILE keys tochoose the desired file directly.
With the PD-F17, custom filing allows you to pick anyof the 100 discs, and place it in three different custom files.
Auto Disc Detection (PD-F27)As you close the disc storage hood, an optical sensor checks ifeach of the 300 disc slots is occupied and puts the data intomemory. This ensures efficient search and play of any disc andtrack. Memory backup keeps slot occupancy information alivewhile the player is powered off.
