Overview

About Puranava

"Pura" means ancient and "Nava" means new. Puranava is a flagship event conducted by Global Organization for Divinity in different parts of the world to showcase the rich heritage and ancient wisdom of India and its relevance in these modern times.

In India it is conducted as an annual inter-school Heritage Quiz Contest in Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, Tuticorin and many other cities.

In the USA, it is conducted as an Indian Cultural Fest. In November 2017, an open heritage quiz contest called Puranava and an Indian cultural competition called "Samskruti" was held in Dallas, TX.

In April 2018, the two events were combined together to create Puranava - Indian Cultural Fest and was first held in Houston, TX. And, now in 2019, Global Organization for Divinity is bringing Puranava to Bay Area, California.

This year, Puranava will feature competitions for kids and youth, exhibits, fun activities, etc. There will be something for every family member to do in Puranava.

Competitions

In Puranava 2019 Bay Area, we will have Samskruti Art, Madhurageetham Music, Heritage Quiz, Sloka and Public Speaking. Each competition in Puranava has been designed with lot of thought and care to enable kids and youth to explore their creative self while expanding their knowledge on India and her glorious heritage. Since the main aim of this fest is to explore and learn, preparatory materials and references are provided to the participants. Please refer to the individual competition sections for more details.

General Guidelines

1. Registration is required to participate in the competitions.

2. Early bird pricing is $15 per competition until March 31, 2019. After April 1, it will be $20 per competition until April 14, 2019. Online registrations will be closed after April 14, 2019.

3. Spot registration will be $25 per competition and is subject to availability. Please check with organizers about availability if you are planning to register on the day of the event.

4. If you are planning to attend, more than 1 competition, sign up for the Multi Competition Pass.

INDIA HERITAGE QUIZ

India Heritage Quiz is a friendly competition that aims to give kids the platform to learn about our rich Indian culture right from the ancient times to our modern present day.

The Quiz competition that will not just challenge your knowledge of India but kindle the joy of research, pride in knowledge and the thrill of winning. We hope this competition is just a start in the lives of your young'uns and of their quest to know more about the great land and its traditions, culture and the great men that lived and live to this day.

We provide the study material for the quiz in the form of flash cards and fun games. The kids have to just bring their curiosity and eagerness to learn!

Seniors - Ages 12 and above

(Age will be calculated as of Apr 1, 2019)

Younger children can participate in higher level if they want to. They will be quizzed/judged at the level they participate.

Heritage Quiz Guidelines

There will be 2 rounds.

Prelims: All the participants will be given a set of questions to answer. Top 8 participants will be identified and they will proceed to Finals round.

Finals ( On-stage round) - Top 8 participants will be divided into teams of 2 each (total 4 teams) and will participate in the finals. Finals will consist of 4-5 rounds.

Questions will be from the topics given but may be worded differently.

For heritage words, the participants are expected to know the word and the meaning. They will not be asked to spell or pronounce the word correctly.

MADHURAGEETHAM MUSIC

Madhurageetham Devotional Music Competition is a devotional music competition and a unique opportunity for the kids to showcase their musical skills and their understanding of the rich musical heritage of India. The main aim of the competition is encourage the kids to explore the devotional aspects of classical music. This year, it is based on the compositions of His Holiness Maharanyam Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji and other devotional songs like Abhangs, compositions by Bhakta Meera, Sri Narayana Theerthar and Sri Bhadrachala Ramadas.

AUDIO FILES and LYRICS for some of the compositions of Madhurageethams and other devotional songs are provided for reference. Participants can learn these songs or any other songs in that category.

COMPETITION GUIDELINES

• There will be 2 rounds except Beginners category. Beginners will have only 1 round.

✦ Prelims - Judges will pick a song from the 2 songs you have prepared and may ask you to sing the song fully or sing few lines. Top 7 participants will proceed to the finals.

✦ Finals - Judge will pick a song from the 2 songs you have prepared and ask the participant to sing the entire song.

✦ Beginners will have to sing the entire Namavali. Judges will ask simple questions about the Namavali. (Which deity is the namavali on, what do you know about the deity, etc).

• For finals, judges will ask questions about the song (meaning, which deity is it written on, composer’s life history, etc). The level of difficulty increases based on age group. Sub-juniors will be asked simple questions but juniors and seniors will be expected to know more.

• For seniors, optionally a relevant Viruttam/Sloka or apt Manodharmam that brings out the bhakti bhava can be included. Participants can choose the audio recordings with the Viruttam/Sloka from the link above. Viruttam/sloka must be relevant to the song. Manodharmam must not exceed 3 minutes.

• Participants must strictly adhere to the given time limit and will be penalized if they exceed the limit.

• Younger children can participate in a higher age category if they wish to. They will be judged at the level they participate in.

PREPARATION:

1. Please stick to the original Ragam and Thalam of the song. You are welcome to add more sangathis to bring out the bhava.

2. For Senior category, Viruttham or some manodharma can be optionally included as part of the rendition. However, you will need to adhere to the time limit allotted.

3. Participants need to bring their own shruthi box. Participants are welcome to use cymbals or similar instruments for talam.

4. Participants are encouraged to dress in traditional Indian attire



5. Judging will purely be based on bhakti bhava and rendition of the kirtan and use of accompaniments will not influence the judging.

JUDGING CRITERIA:

1. One of the primary goals for this unique classical music event is to bring out the bhakti elements through the lyrics, as intended by the composers. Apart from the basics of shruthi, talam and ragam, there will be emphasis on the bhava, bhakti, lyrics (pronunciation and understanding). The judges will ask questions about the meaning of the song and also about the composer.

2. Seniors- In addition to the above, participants rendering Manodharmam will be judged on their ability to bring out the bhavam of the song.

SONG SELECTIONS:

Participants are expected to come prepared with 2 songs except Beginners. Beginners only need to prepare 1 song (Namavali only).

1. One song composed by HH Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji (referred to as Madhurageethams) or Namavali (for Sub-junior only) and

2. One composition from any of the four - Meera Bhajans, Abhang, Tharangams or Bhadrachala Ramadasa compositions. Participants will be asked to sing any one of the song they have prepared. Songs given are just for reference. Participants can choose other songs of the given composers.

SAMSKRUTI ART

"It's not what you see on the outside, it is what you feel inside”


• Art Hall will be open from 8:30 AM -12:30 PM

• Each participant can sign in during this time and will have no more than 1.5 hrs to complete their art work. The participation will be timed.

• Participants will be given a sheet of “art” paper.

• Participants must bring their own medium (pencils, crayons, color pencils or markers)

• No references are allowed inside the hall.

SLOKA

Recite Gopika Geetham memorized (Tenth Canto - Chapter 31 - Srimad Bhagavatham)

AGE CATEGORIES (Participant’s completed age as of April 1, 2019)

COMPETITION GUIDELINES

• Participant is required to recite the slokas memorized.

• He/she is required to recite Gopika Geetham from Srimad Bhagavatam only (Composer: Sage Vyasa).

• No reference materials will be allowed inside the competition room.

• Participants are encouraged to come in Indian attire.

• Participant is expected to announce his / her name, and the title of the sloka as “Gopika Geetham” and then begin to recite.

• Participant is expected to start the recitation starting from the reference “Gopya Oochuhu”, unless they are prompted by judges to start from a sloka other than the first sloka. Gokulam participants will not be asked to recite from the middle.

• Participant may sit or stand while reciting. No penalty marks for either choice.

• Participants may or may not choose to recite the slokas in any raga or tune, and with or without shruti box. Not a criteria for judging the participant.

• Participants, when he/she is chanting, will not be allowed to pause for breaks such as restroom, water, etc.

Rules:

For round 1, participants are expected to speak for 5 mins (hard limit) on any of the following topics

• Education in ancient India

Round 2 will be an extempore round. Participants will choose a topic by drawing a lot. They will be given 10 minutes to prepare and have to speak for 2 minutes on the topic. They will be allowed to use cell-phones or other media during preparation.

Participants can bring their notes to the competition room but cannot refer to them while speaking.

This will allow you to participate in the various competitions that are applicable to your age group. Please familiarize yourself with the rules for the competitions you intend to participate. This fee is non-refundable.

If you are above 7 years, you are automatically enrolled in the Indian Heritage Quiz prelims.

GENERAL GUIDELINES

1. Registration is required to participate in the competitions.

2. Early bird pricing is $32 for Multi-competition pass until March 31, 2019. After April 1, it will be $37 until April 14, 2019. Online registrations will be closed after April 14, 2019.
