IEP*Legal Contract*● An IEP is a written statement of the
educational program designed to meet a child’s individual needs.
What’s the IEP’s Purpose?● The IEP has two general purposes:

○ To state the services that the school district will provide for the child
When is the IEP developed?● Abide by mandated timelines
○ Initial Referral - may happen at any time
○ Determine Eligibility - within 45 school days of referral
○ Annual Review - every 365 days
○ Triennial Re-evaluation - must occur every three years
Who develops the IEP?● A team of individuals that includes key
school staff and the child’s parents
● The team meets, reviews assessment available assessment information, and designs an education program to address the child’s education needs that result from his or her disability
What is in an IEP?●Each child’s IEP must contain specific information, as listed within IDEA
(Federal Special Education law) and includes, but not limited to;○ The child’s present levels of academic achievement and functional performance,
describing how the child is currently doing in school and how the child’s disability affects his or her involvement and progress in the general curriculum
○ Annual goals for the child, that the team determined the student can reasonably accomplish in a year
○ The special education and related services to be provided to the student, including supplementary aids and services and changes to the program or supports for school personnel
○ How much of the school day and for what reason the student will be removed from full participation in the regular education curriculum with non-disabled peers.
○ How (and if) the child is to participate in state and district-wide assessments, including what modifications to tests the child needs
○ When services and modifications will begin, how often, where, and how long they will be provided
○ How school personnel will measure the child’s progress toward the annual goals
What is a “Legal” PPT?● At minimum, you must invite;
○ A guardian (biological parent, surrogate parent, guardian, etc.)
○ Special education teacher
○ Regular education teacher
○ Related services staff (School Psychologist, Social Worker, Speech/Language, etc.)
