We are not devoted to finding the artists with a hundred likes on Facebook for the sake of discovery, but noting the news that is worthy of saving from slipping out of the fissures.

Hinds, formally known as Deers are the band to look for this upcoming year. The group that was formed only a few years ago has managed to collide on tour with big names such as Mac Demarco and the Vaccines. But what has made them such a band to buzz about? The four-piece natives of Madrid, Spain, made up of Carlotta Cosials, Ana Perrote, Ade Martin, and Amber Grimber-gen have managed to make a name for themselves that we think is here to stay, and grow. Though they have only been recog-nized for about a year, they have built a sound that is simple yet original with wide appeal due to the pop influences such as the beach boys and gritty rock styling’s influenced by the Velvet Underground; furthermore, have built a fan base that is flourishing. Hinds began touring through Europe over the summer of 2014, at the time only having 2 official releases being small EP’s. While touring the group began to develop a bigger sound; doing so with the help of musician and friend Diego García of the Parrots. The tour made stops playing with many musicians, and after the various shows as NME reports, “everyone from Mac DeMarco to Palma Violets to The Vaccines have been found at their (Hinds) feet when they roll into town, and it’s easy to see why their very presence seems to incite a party,” (NME).

“We’re transparent on the stage...”

Such an intrinsic aspect is in the very sound they pro-duce. The group carries simple three-chord song structures with clever bass lines and lead riffs that have remnants of the Beach Boys. The simple quick driv-en style becomes the “incite to party” under the writing style Carlotta described as inevitably happy and up beat. “When we try to write a sad song we always have it going well for a bit, but then someone will come into the room and we’ll all start jumping around until it turns into a happy song. W can’t help it!” (NME). The sound’s being created under their attitude of “our-shit-our-rules” (as said by Carlotta) however becomes so much more when made complex by the Lou Reed Velvet Un-derground style of vocal melodies. The phrases carry irregular patterns that switch between the baritone vocal styling’s of Perrota and the higher more punk styling of Cosials that meet up in the songs with beautiful har-monies that results with a Sweet Jane-esq influence.

The group’s fan base was comprised of a typical indie group’s popularity when they were originally just a band on band-camp, however, they quickly grew when they began their first tour in the summer of 2014, and the first show on that tour being their fourth gig ever as a full band, making stops in the beginning of the tour in small backyard venues, to larger clubs, to eventually adding stops playing fes-tivals such as Jagermusic in Spain. The fan base originally started in Europe nat-urally, but just as naturally (as a result of American music influence) their popular-ity shifted to North America. They have since the New Year continued to tour and grow their name (despite the legal-ly forced change), making stops all over Europe and expanding into other parts of the world such as Australia and the Unit-ed States. They have gained popularity across indie blogs as a result of the beau-tiful image they have, but have since then been recognized as very much real mu-sicians; being mentioned by top publish-ers the Australia Herald, NME and even a small shout out by Rolling Stone Mag-azine. Although the group is still young in their career, and many say it is easy to fall off as a indie band, the fame Hinds are gathering on the basis of buzz, live perfor-mances, and the love fans have for their two, two-song EP’s is shaping a group that people can look forward to in 2015.

Hinds are a breath of fresh air for music in 2015; their talent sprouts out of their energy and go-go party attitude. Notably, they are making their first stop in Canada at the Tupona music festival in Toronto, so keep an eye open and get your tickets soon. It’s no wonder the artist Hinds play on their iPods in their tour van are now playing Hinds music on tour and drinking to it before and after - and be assured that the beers are going to keep flowing, and the party will not be stopping anytime soon.

Becks morning phase was an interesting shift from the original multi-genre clashing music to a more modern psychi-folk sort of album, but where it is strong such as certain technical vocal hits, it falls short of what we love about Beck the genre clashing such as in classics such as “Odelay.”Highlight Track - “Unforgiven”

The self proclaimed “fake musician” produces another ironically great album sticking a retro style that ties together into a thematically great car-rying a sexual aesthetic. Though the album (like all Pink’s albums) is a swing or miss for listners similar to those of Frank Zappa fans, there is no doubt that the goal of the album sounding like 80’s sleaze was achieved in the guitar tones and synth sounds and loops.Highlight Track - “Lipstick” & “One Summer Night”

Releasing an album at the beginning of the year is usually a swing or miss in the question of weather an album will be successful through the rest of a year. In the case of Mr. Tillman of the band Fleet-foxes solo record, “I Love You Honeybear” it is a possible contender of album of the year,

even with it being this early. The album being a psychi album also containsremnants of country, soul, classic pop and folk. The album carries beautiful instru-mental arrangements, conducted with great old folk style fingerpicking, to melodic synth loops that are cohesive with a dream pop sound. The top property to this album however lies in Tilleman’s poetic lyricism, writing an album that carries a constant theme of the double entendre nature of love, “The future can’t be real, I barely know how long a moment is.” Stating how a future with love can’t be real because of how beautiful it is, but also because there is no future with somthing as damaging as her love. Highlight Track - Just listen to the whole album, k?

Jazz music has always been generated and shaped by intersections between cultures. At the turn of the century, Jazz emerged in New Orleans as a mash-up of European classical music, Amer-ican blues music, and South American inspired rhythms. Later, the swing movement introduced the “Big Band” and what was once heard in smoky little bars became the most popular music for our grandparents to dance to in clubs. Today, these clubs have been replaced with EDM festivals, and the stardom that used to accompany legends like Louis Armstrong seems to only accompany pop superstars like Justin Bieber and Katy Perry. Jazz was once the definition of cool, but our generation has largely ignored it.

The Convergence of Hip-Hop and Jazz Music as Orchestrated by BADBADNOTGOOD and Odd Future Words By Matt McCabe

A Tale of Two Genres:

Page 22: Pup Magazine

Comprised of Matthew Tavares on keys, Chester Hansen on bass, and Alex Sowinsk on drums, BADBADNOTGOOD initially met while at-tending Humber College’s Jazz Program in Toron-to, Ontario. With a shared love of hip-hop music, the group’s early styling’s consisted of reinterpreta-tions of some of their favorite tunes from that realm of music, inserting their own classically trained (yet unrefined) takes on gritty bangers like Gucci Mane’s “Lemonade”. Although their composition style was initially criticized by their teachers who failed to see the merit in their works, upon uploading videos of their performances and jam sessions to YouTube they attracted thousands of views and attention from the young hip-hop collective known as Odd Future.

12

Page 23: Pup Magazine

This relationship with Odd Future catapulted the trio’s fame and led to collaborations with Frank Ocean, Ghostface Killah and Tyler, The Creator among others. Inevitably this brought in an audience of mostly rowdy suburban teenagers- not really the usual crowd that most jazz music attracts. But then again, BBNG’s music is not like most jazz music straddles the line between jazz, electronica and instrumental hip-hop in a way that certainly feels at home in the crowded clubs that members of Odd Future typically perform in. Exem-plifying yet another one of the collisions b tween cultures that have histoircally shaped jazz music’s evolution, BBNG’s unique love of both classical jazz and aggressive hip-hop manifests as music that is both interesting to the high-brow population of jazz enthusiasts and ap-pealing to the considerably more unruly fans of hip-hop and rap music. The re-sult is a unique compilation that has the one thing modern jazz fails to supply: crowd a peal.

13

Page 24: Pup Magazine

“ Jazz’s elitist position has created

a divide between music that satiates the formally trained

and music thatexcites those

looking to have a good time. This is

why BBNG’s position in the

intermediary space between high and

low musical cultures is soimportant and

incredibly fascinatingto observe. ”

14

Page 25: Pup Magazine

This article will surely be met with anguished cries from certain jazz elitist’s who criticize the 2/3 members of BBNG who’ve since dropped out of their classical training and proclaim negative reviews of BBNG’s sound for not being polished enough to be considered good jazz. I’m willing to bet that these same people were kindred souls with those who saw the introduction of bebop to the genre by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker as terribly damning as well. Though sometimes drawing certain geriatric criticism, the crowds that precipitate at BBNG shows in lieu of these formalities point to aspects of their music that the white-haired and shrilled chai persons of classi-cal conservatries (or, perhaps Humber College professors) simply cannot see. They have a differ-ent sound, an aura that spawns mosh pits, and a huge following of young people through initial af-filitions with Odd Future. Their brand of jazz music is not the brand that is taught through classical institutions - it’s learned from a love of al types of music and a penchant for imbuing their craft with

personal touches drawn from unlikely sources.

With music created by young people to be enjoyed by low-brow jazz and hip-hop enthusiasts alike, BADBADNOTGOOD walks the line between sophisticated musical con-structs and hard-edged beats like no other group has before. How do you make jazz cool again? Apparently you send it back to it’s roots of pleasing the untrained masses, pair it with an entirely new feel that represents the musical desires of our

Four years have passed since Adele’s sopho-more album, 21, which brought in a whopping 6 Grammy Awards (in-cluding Album of the Year). Her third album, pushed back from 2014, has in recent news been released to be named as “25.” It is sure to fol-low in the footsteps of her first album but will it be able to outshine the massive shadows of it?

Festivals to Look Out For2 015 is shaping up to be a massive year in the Canadian music festival scene. In addition to all our usual favorites, there will be some new and noteworthy events this summer to keep an eye out for. These festivals include Bonnaroo-sister-festival: “WayHome”, British favorite “Bestival” expanding to Toronto, and of course, “Tupo-na Music Festival”. But with such a wide range of festivals to choose from, figuring out which festival you want to attend can be a difficult decision. Luckily, this article is here to help keep you informed on some of the biggest (and best) Canadian music festivals of 2015 so you can figure out which festival is right for you.

23

Page 34: Pup Magazine

Wayhome As mentioned above, Way Home is a new festival coming to Canada for the first time this year. But just because it’s a rookie when it comes to the fes-tival scene, doesn’t mean it’s not going to be awe-some. In fact, the people behind it aren’t rookies at all. WayHome is styled after (and run by the same people behind) Bonnaroo, a well-known music and art festival that takes place annually in Manchester, Tennessee of the United States. The festival has a promising lineup packed full of big names, including headliners: Sam Smith, Kendrick Lamar, and Alt-J. But access to the music isn’t all you’ll be getting if you buy a ticket to WayHome. The two-day festival, held July 24th-26th in Barrie, Ontario also includes campsites for festival-goers to stay at and ensures a unique experience. WayHome boldly claims: “this is not the festival you think it is”. See for yourself and buy tickets now at wayhome.com.

IBEYi:

The sister act to look for at tupona music festival

words by Marie Kamukuny

Page 42: Pup Magazine

In 2014, the musical duo, Cuban-French twin sisters, Ibeyi released their first ever music video for their debut single “River”. Following this, the sisters received a lot of attention and love from the alternative music world. Com-ing from the independent London based la-bel, XL Recordings, who are also the genius-es behind Vampire Weekend and electronic artist FKA TWIGS’s LP1, it was no surprise that indie-alternative music listeners imme-diately fell in love with the 20-year-old twins, Naomi and Lisa-Kaidè Diaz. A lot of anticipa-tion has been built up for the release of their self-titled album, and having them at Tupona Music Festival added to that excitement. As a lucky writer and also fan of the sisters, I got the opportunity to spend the day with them as they were practicing and preparing for the festival. I sat down with Naomi and Lisa and got the inside scoop on their music and the inspirations behind it.

32

Page 43: Pup Magazine

Ibeyi (pronounced ee-bey-ee) is the Yoruba word meaning “twins”. Yoruba is the native language of the twins, which they learned through the Cuban traditions and culture of their father, the late Anga Diaz who was a famous percussion player.

The French-Cuban sister duo bring something different to the normal alternative sound by in-cluding some of their lyrics in Cuban Yoruba. “Yoruba is a big part our lives, our culture and Cuban culture. We are really excited to be able to include it in our music and get the oppor-tunity to share it with the world” Lisa- Kaidè tells us during one of her rehearsals for the show. As the twins mention, most of their musical inspiration come from the kind of music they were exposed to by their father. He was also mixing jazz, hip-hop, African music, and differ-ent sounds. Naomi explained, “It was kind of subconscious that we did the same as him”. Their music is a soulful repre-sentation of life, love, death, and family—which are all big inspirations to them.

33

Page 44: Pup Magazine

While a lot of their sound is motivated by old jazz and soul, many contemporary musicians have also played a big role in influ-encing their sound. As they display through their Spotify playlists, artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocean and also old artists such as the late Nina Simone, the everlasting talent of Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu. Overall, their heritage and love of popular and legendary artists allows for their music to have quite a unique sound. On top of having such a great sound, the twins also have an amazing stage presence. While watching them during rehearsals, it was clear that they felt close connections to their lyrics and that they have a close relationship with each other. During our one-on-one sessions, I noted how they often finished each other’s sen-tences and allowed one to speak for the other. The energy was

remarkable to be around. In fact, their relationship does not only shine through as sisters, but they also contribute greatly to each other as a band. As Lisa states, “we’re really each other’s other halves and we hope that people can feel that love and connection we have through our songs and on stage.” Lisa is the primary source when it comes to the instrumental aspect of their songs, as she plays the piano and Naomi adds the percussion on the box drums. This dynamic is beautiful to watch on stage and in music videos. Their debut video for “River”, successfully displays the intensity of their presence. The song includes many harmonies as the twins take turns emerging from the water in a baptism style lay out. It is very eerie to watch as they are submerged underwater for what seems like a long period of time, but you simply cannot take your eyes off. And, once again connecting with their Yoruba culture, the sisters inform that the song is meant to sing to the Oshun, the orisha of love, fertility and rivers.

34

Page 45: Pup Magazine

When asked about what audience members should expect to see during their perfor-mance at the Tu-pona festival, es-pecially those who have never been introduced to their music prior, Nao-mi explains, “we’re hoping to trans-port the audience along with use and hope that they get

“we’re really e a c h o t h e r ’ s other halves and we hope that p e o p l e can feel that love and c o n n e c t i o n we have through our songs and on stage.”

lost in our music as much as we do.” In a timely fashion of finish-ing each other’s sentences, Naomi adds, “it will be our first time ever performing at such a big event and we really hope every-one loves it.” Ibeyi is definitely the duo to look out for at Tupo-na. There’s no doubt that the audience will enjoy it and that Tu-pona Music Fetival will be the first time such a huge audience has the opportunity to witness their unbelievable performance.

Music festivals are a staple in popular culture. There are festivals that showcase every kind of music, whether it be Coachella, Osheaga, or Tomorrow-land. Canada’s own Tupona Music Festival will be starting it’s first year this July, and it is one festival that you will not want to miss out on. Tupona is a festival that will go above and beyond the typical standards of music festivals. With a legendary line-up and an iconic location, this festival almost seems too good to be true; and it gets even better. Along with the music, there will also be a modern art exhib-it. Tupona has something for everyone and will not disappoint.

Music festivals typically have a few main headliners that catch people’s attention; Tupona has ten. For their first year, Tupona Music Festival will be featuring Kanye West, Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, Haim, Lana del Ray, Arctic Monkeys, Sam Smith, Vance Joy, Lorde, and Hozier. Along with the headliners, there are about a hundred other bands who will be playing.

36

Page 51: Pup Magazine

Tupona will be held at Mosport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario. Mosport Park is an iconic location, especially regarding Canada’s history of music festivals. Noteworthy festivals that have been held here are the 1970 Woodstock-esque Strawberry Fields Festival, the 1978 rock music festival called Canada Jam, the 1980 punk and new waved theme Heatwave Festival, the 1996 Edenfest (which is

the largest Canadian rock festival to date), and finally the 2012-2014 Boots and Hearts Country Music Festival. Boots and

Hearts 2014 had an estimated 35,000 spectators, proving Mosport has the ability to host a huge amount of people. Mosport has a great track record with music festivals, so combining that with the incredible lineup, Tupona should be a wildly successful

festival. Another great aspect of Mosport Park is the on-site camping. Guests can bring tents or recreational vehicles (RV’s) and camp within the park, which creates a never ending festival. Campers will have special wristbands which allow them to exit and enter the festival grounds as they please. Camping on site allows

you to be as close to the event as possible and provides convenience in case you need to access your belongings.

37

Page 52: Pup Magazine

38

Page 53: Pup Magazine

Tupona Music Festi-val will have music from many different genres, expanding the demographic of guests. The artists who are attend-ing Tupona have styles that range from hip-hop to alter-native. Certain artists even have a jazz undertone within their music. James Christo-pher, one of the coordinators of Tupona, said that when they were planning this fes-tival, they intended to have a diverse lineup in order to draw more people in and to provide a mixture of different sounds. James Christopher was also a coordinator with Osheaga Music and Arts Festival. When asked about which event he expects to be more successful, Chris-topher said “Tupona, for sure”. Christopher explained that Tupona is something new, something big, and something that spectators will never forget. It has been rumored that certain artists have something extrava-gant planned for this event. James Christopher could not tell us much about the rumor, however he did say that this will be one of Kanye West’s best performances ever. To all the Kanye fans out there, get ready for the show of a lifetime.

Guests of Tupona will all be given the chance to win amazing prizes. There will be contests and raffles throughout the weekend and prizes range from free mer-chandise to an all expenses paid vaca-tion. Other prizes include a car from one of the festival’s sponsors, Toyota, as well as two VIP passes for next years Tupo-na Music Festival. This is just one more reason as to why Tupona should be your music festival of choice this summer. Since the guests attending Tupona will be camping onsite for the duration of the festival, coordinators wanted to en-sure that they have everything they need. There will be multiple food vendors as well as independent chefs. Both the per-formers and the guests will have access to a variety of delicious food without hav-ing to leave Mosport Park. There will also be two outdoor bars open from 6pm to 1am for those who are 19+. On top of all the food and drinks that are available, there will also be multiple merchandise vendors. The merchandise consists of specific artist concert apparel and Tu-pona Music Festival graphic t-shirts and sweaters. You can purchase some of this clothing as a souvenir to remember this festival.

Tupona Music Festival seems like some-thing one could only dream of, so buy your passes and prepare to make this dream a reality. You won’t want to miss everything that Tupona has to offer.
