Indian – Africa Trade to be $100 billion (Rs 6,00,000 Cr)in 2015

We all know, India – Africa trade, which was barely

at US$ 5 billion a decade ago has reached to US$

70 billion in 2012 and is being projected to reach

US$ 100 billion by 2015.

India is currently 4th Largest trading partner of

Africa and is the largest trade partner to Nigeria,

Angola, South Africa and Egypt

• India's economic diplomacy towards Africa took a new direction when the "Focus Africa”program was launched along with the five year Foreign Trade Policy 2002-2007.

• India and Africa’s partnership is has entered into a new era. Close political relationship beinginvigorated by flourishing trade and investment.

• Africa and India trade has followed upward trend in trade and investment over last decade. Bilateral trade has grown at a robust 31.8% annually between 2005 – 2011.

About Punjab

The state has emerged as a key hub for textile-based industries, including yarn, readymade garments

and hosiery. With the development of apparel parks, favorable textile policy and other incentives for

the creation of textile infrastructure, the state offers tremendous opportunities for investment.

The state is ranked first in India in terms of the infrastructure facilities it offers. Punjab’s road, rail and

air transport network, connectivity, construction of bridges and infrastructure facilities are amongst

the best.

The average gross state domestic product (GSDP) growth rate for the state of Punjab was about 14.1

per cent between 2004–05 and 2012–13. The state provides investment opportunities in sectors such

as textiles, agro-based industries, IT, automotive and auto components, sports goods and light

engineering goods.

o Punjab’s gross state domestic product (GSDP) was US$54.1 billion at current prices in 2012-13.

o The state’s GSDP increased at a compound annualgrowth rate (CAGR) of 14.9* per cent between 2004-05 and 2012-13.

o Total exports of industrial goods from Punjab were valued atUS$4.4 billion in 2011-12 as compared to US$ 3.8 billion in 2010-11. Exports during 2012-13 are further anticipated to be at US$4.4 billion.

o In 2011-12, the state’s principal export items were yams andtextiles, hosiery and readymade garments, rice, sports goods,bicycles and bicycle parts.

o Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Patiala accounted for around 92 percent of Punjab’s total exports of industrial goods in 2011-12

Along with initiatives from the private sector, has had a positive impact on exports from India to Africa. Between2005 and 2011, Indian exports have grown annually at over 23%, even as Africa's share in India's total exportsincreased from 6.7% to 7.7%.

India's exports to Africa, by Categories

The total market size of the Indian autocomponents industry is estimated at over $ 14.1bn.

The sector comprises 500 medium and largeplayers, and also includes 5,000 units (Tier 2 & Tier3) in the small scale sector.

The Indian prices are estimated broadly to be 10to 25% less than the world market prices but aremuch higher when related to some specific items,where better material inputs and technology areinvolved.

Mechanical engineering industry in India is showing rapidadvancements in every sphere of the economy with Indiancompanies forging ahead in making of defense equipment's,aircrafts, sleekly designed cars, vehicles and variousindustrial devices.

India's engineering exports are likely to cross the USD 50billion mark by the end of this fiscal on the back of increasingdemand in markets like North America, Africa and MiddleEast countries.

India is a major exporter of light and heavy engineeringgoods and has a well-developed and diversified industrialmachinery and capital base
